If you think it’s sloppy, you’ve clearly never payed attention when listening to any of their albums. There’s an all out chaos to the sound that just works, and it sounds organic, especially on the first two albums. It’s insanity in music form
Death metal drumming is basically crazy hectic jazz played fast and hard. Any good jazz drummer could make an excellent death metal drummer and vice versa. It’s just the violence knob that needs to be jacked lol
Don't really care if he's "sloppy" here; he earned my respect years ago. He's been playing this fast since before it was even commonplace. It has soul...
Same here! Heard Phobophile on the radio in 2006 and was instantly hooked. I later went and looked up the 1993 demo and Blasphemy Made Flesh, shit was insane, loved how strangely relaxing some of the songs were, like Abigor.
I guess no one here in the comments knows of Flo's jazz background. It's so obvious that he's taking a jazz approach to his playing and more importantly the live execution of the songs. To me it's the main reason why he's still an interesting drummer while other speed machine drummers aren't as talked about anymore.
This. He's actually improvising a lot of those fills. He's played the song surely millions of times by now and I'm sure he has it memorized. I'm gonna truthfully state that the majority of extreme metal drummers are boring these days. They're robots. You want that? Program a drum machine and it's infallible -- it'll play the same thing every single time perfectly 100% of the time. Jazz and tech death metal (which was clearly highly influenced by jazz) was never about being perfect. I guess now it is, but the fills and improv particularly in a live setting when everyone knows the damn song is what makes drumming INTERESTING even to other drummers. I'm gonna think, "oh shit sick! He just pulled improv!" if I see a drummer do something different live. The singer is allowed to break up the song and shout, "1234" but the drummer can't have those liberties as long as he's still holding it down? That's a bit illogical. A recording where the band is on strict metronome practice and does the same song upwards of thousands of times to get the perfect take is very different. Hell, look at the godfather of prog drumming. The man has the most ridiculous kit ever and completely does improv live which people go crazy for. Flo is a good drummer that's busted his ass and devoted his life to playing the drums, recording, and touring (the world at that). The man can have some fucking fun because frankly he's earned it. Those perfectionist armchair theorists can't play this shit anyways. Constant double bass also gets goddamn boring. It lost the, "oh my God how does anyone do this" a long time ago. A straight 4 gets boring. How many drummers drop their 4 for a fill? A lot do. Extreme metal has brainwashed people to believe that the only way to keep time is via constant double bass which gets really goddamn uninteresting really fast.
He was absolutely never a jazz player. He got away with playing fast and sloppy back in the day. Drummers are more proficient now. He just needs to clean up his playing a technique. This is a classic song. And he is a cool guy.
@chillhopdrumz1862 Just tuned into this comment after randomly hitting play on this video after 3 years.. You're absolutely right.. It's that natural on the scene "slop" that really makes it so good.. The studio version is just editing to make sound as intended but to be able to do these things live is really something else..

People talking smack about Flo.Flo has always been somewhat inconsistent. If you listen to None So Vile you' ll probably hear about 4-5 different snare tones.Same goes with the kicks,it's not exactly a 16th note run always, but that is what's refreshing. He plays like an animal, and there were times that people used to appreciate such performances, for example every single work of Emperor, first albums of Dying Fetus, the list is endless. We 've reached an era where everyone is perfect, digitalized as fuck and the soul is squeezed out of the player in exchange to 100% on the grid tight performances.People don't play like that, most of them don't at least in a live situation so why bother ? We,as players and listeners have made perfect average. How to stand out amongst average perfection ? By being real and honest, just like Flo.
Well said. I just saw him live the other night and I love how he just seems to improvise and play in the moment instead of trying to “perfect” his parts. He’s a beast. Great when I saw him in 1999, great again in 2019.

He played this so well. It might look sloppy to some people, but did it seem like they were lost because of his playing? No. He was right on time for every transition. One of the best concerts I ever saw was Cryptopsy doing their None So Vile album live at Little Devil in Tilburg in the Netherlands in 2017. Because of the very small size of that venue, the drumkit had to be placed at one side at the front of the stage. Right next to my usual place in the audience, which is as close as possible to the stage AND just out of reach of the moshpit. Safety first YOLO lol
This is what you call realistic. Not all drummers are drum machines. I always loved this because its raw, its what death metal was founded on. Not the most FLAWLESS drumming, but incredibly difficult none the less and impressive. Side note, i've always kinda hated cryptopsy's vocals. It definitely grew on me but still is a lil rough lol
there's a "switch" if you will on a snare drum that brings the snare wires to touch the bottom head, which is what makes a snare a snare, otherwise its more or less just a piccolo tom. you can see in most of the video that the snare lever is open.
If my bands don't have vocalists that sound like primordial beasts, I am not interested. But, man, I fucking love this band, Flo Mounier is a huge inspiration for my drumming and just my absolute hero
Flo might not be the cleanest drummer ever, but I think his creativity in extreme metal makes him stand out. He's made a lot of creative drumming parts to riffs that most would just straight up do some lame double kick backbeat or blasting.

Now I haven’t seen any negative comments on this vid, but there’s no chance that there’s anything wrong with this mans drumming. The writing in cryptopsy and the notation for his fills are insane, not to mention all ghost notes this man pulls off. Allot better than any Chelsea grin, white chapel “ death ( soft ) core “ drummers out there, with their “ brutal “ break downs and what not. Allot more rhythm changes in cryptopsy not everyone can keep up with. This mans one of the greatest drummers alive and you’re just gonna have to live with that
musically, this group has a lot of talent. vocal question, I've never understood the choices they have made so far. what is on c is that the voice of this vocalist is simply anything! euuuh euuuuhh euuuuuh leuuuuu leuuuuu heuuuuuu ...
The drumming was awesome regardless of what some of you think. Remember, he's only a human, humans get tired and have bad performances, just like athletes or just like we do at work. This is some hard stuff to play perfectly everyday. But that damn wanna be vocalist sounds like the cookie monster choking on chicken bone.
Why? You are terrible. None of the shitty drummers you think of can play like he did. Anyway, if you're so great, why don't you post a video of you doing any better? Moron
@mars its cuz it is his play style. If he wanted he could play everything on point. I think he plays sloppy because he wants to and it makes the drums feel (sound)l different in the mix.
Whilst yes, he is sloppy, I give it to him that he never slows down. Some old schoolers are slowing down songs that they played in their prime but flo is keeping it going like he did 25 years ago
i dont think he is that sloppy really, cryptopsy is organized chaos, it really is. This "sloppiness" is probably at least partically intentional. Listen to their records the drumming is all the place and wild. It fits the music perfectly.
Damn Flo has down sized his kit but I am still digging the more compacted set up and hes still one of my fav drummers. Hes a killer technical death drummer and hes jazz drumming is amazing and just as technical. Thats what I like about him and diverse drummers not stuck in one mindset... sadly though I cant say the same for Cryptopsy. They usec to be awesome but I cant stand this version of Cryptopsy. Their singer is terrible. Their 1990s line will always be my fav and have forever changed my life when it came to my personal drumming.. lol because when I first heard none so vile I was like holy shit you can actually do that on a drum set... and even my approach to playing guitar too was forever changed. So thank you for that Flo! 🤘🏾
Flo isn't sloppy. He plays loose. There's a BIG difference. It's an intentional style meant to give the music a chaotic feel and holy fuck does it succeed.
Sloppy well he does play with a loose jazz feel and let’s be honest he is the reason extreme metal drumming is where it’s at today he influenced everyone and he is on of the originators
The legend and the reason extreme drumming is where its at today between flo pete and john from origin soon all other forms will be non existent they take all styles and blend them perfectly
Donna Moffitt I saw Origin on the 16th and asked John for a stick. Since I recognized him he threw one directly too me. Scorpion Immortal 5bv. Epic night. I met (and got a hug haha fanboy moment) from Alan Cassidy of TBDM, and got a signed snare head that was dated and had the set list for Trey from Fetus. Love how down to earth death guys are.
To the people saying he's playing sloppy... go behind the kit and play 16th note triplets with your feet and place straight 8th notes with the hands. Oh is that hard? You never thought to do that? Flo has.... probably because he knows bands such as Rot, Squash Bowels, Dermoid Cyst, Gowl, Assuck, fucking Agathocles... do your homework.
(I'm totally necroposting here, but) most of those bands're grind / goregrind - subgenres whose ethos is "precision < speed" (and that's totally fine; it's part of the aesthetic & appeal of the subgenres) - and it proves his inaccuracy isn't a big deal. In other words: yeah, he's sloppy, but that's part of the schtick. I don't think he's _trying_ to be precise; speed's the name of the game, with a certain natural chaos or "organicness" to the mistimed strokes. But if we were to suppose he was trying for speed _and_ precision (like the kind of performative par in technical DM, progressive extreme metal; that kinda stuff), boilerplate musical "best practice" holds that one needs to learn to play a piece accurately at a lower tempo, then gradually ramp up the BPM until one can play it with the same accurately at the target higher speed. With the exception of songs that're *deliberately* composed or performed to be arrhythmic, mistimed, dissonant / atonal, or improvisational - things we see in some styles of fusion, jazz, blues, experimental, etc. - I think most music teachers & instrumentalists hold to a philosophy of "Speed is meaningless without precision; precision is meaningless without dynamic."
Man, that kit looks far to flimsy to take that kind of beating. I kept waiting for something to break, and though nothing broke I did see him adjusting snare spring tension in the middle of a blast beat. Inhuman! Respect to Flo. More respect for the drums for holding together
That's insane. What the fuck do metal drummers do to improve his speed and coordination? I mean sometimes it's hard too because contra tempos go so fast and they still do them right without going over the tempo (I don't know English music vocabulary so I hope that make sense)

musically, this group has a lot of talent. vocal question, I've never understood the choices they have made so far. what is on c is that the voice of this vocalist is simply anything! euuuh euuuuhh euuuuuh leuuuuu leuuuuu heuuuuuu ...
The drumming was awesome regardless of what some of you think. Remember, he's only a human, humans get tired and have bad performances, just like athletes or just like we do at work. This is some hard stuff to play perfectly everyday. But that damn wanna be vocalist sounds like the cookie monster choking on chicken bone.
yep--& finally someone has something with merit to say on the comment section
All of the drumming in this genre of metal is terrible. It's a requirement so I hear.
@@fonztorres he is considered the best drummer in metal, no beats Flo, he's metals Neil Pert.
Man, this band used to be so great. Saw em right before lord worm left, now this...
AS LONG AS IT ROCKS, FUCK IT. Flo hits hard. It's his best trait. His playing makes me trash the pit harder. All that matters buuuud
God the bass gets me every time
Whilst yes, he is sloppy, I give it to him that he never slows down.
Man I was there and they sounded TIGHT AF
i love this song
2:03 BEST FUCKING PART!!! I ALWAYS GET GOOSE BUMPS
I expect more from Flo.
There's a difference between a loose feel and sloppiness. This is not sloppiness.
Man , that is killer ! I don't care about the sloppiness , but it was awesome !
damn they invited me to this show when i saw them at the airport!
that is a beautiful snare sound at the beginning
Funny with all these "sloppy" comments. Have people never heard a Cryptopsy record? Flo has always played like this and it gives Cryptopsy its charm
Un verdadero especialista en la batería de metal extremo.
Good drummer☺️!!! Can someone tell me why he uses trigger on snare? Thanks
My guess is it's to help play louder at high speeds
Simon Lussier thanks !! 😉
Destruction 🔥
holy fkn shit this is really good
SO Fucking SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to see anybody else who is nearly 50 years old and still can play blastbeats at 300bpms+
This guy is a legend!!!what are we talking about lol
Flo is a drummaster!
Asombroso, que nunca muera el metal!!!
As a drummer myself flo is definitely not sloppy everyone who says that either is stupid or don’t even play drums
Somebody please show the exit to that guy with the microphone who's trying to do the vocal impressions!
The legend and the reason extreme drumming is where its at today between flo pete and john from origin soon all other forms will be non existent they take all styles and blend them perfectly
You've got to be kidding me. >_>
Pete is the man.
Love how down to earth death guys are.
pete townsend...?
Pete Sandoval (ex-Morbid Angel, Terrorizer)
Vive le Québec et vive Cryptosy !!!
Wow...😀😘😘😘👍👍👍
Legend!
So death metal, nice to see a human being, not a heartless machine with straight face.
fffukkin intense! droppin a stick at that tempo would be certain death!!
