Our small ward choir is singing this beautiful arrangement this Christmas with piano and one violin. Every time I listen to this performance the splendor of the event combined with the mastery of Dan Forrest makes me weep with reverence and joy and my heart swells, I think, to twice it's normal size. I'm so grateful this much beauty is here on the earth.
Saw this performed in Dallas recently with a 150 piece choir and oh man, what an experience. Brought so many of us to tears. The intensity of the choir at the end was such a beautiful sensation to feel and absorb. It was magical.
Song was written by Austrian Franz Gruber, primary school teacher, church musician and organist. The organ in a nearby church was out of order. Gruber was asked to set the poem to music for 2 voices and guitar. He wrote it the afternoon of Christmas Eve. A beautiful masterpiece in my humble opinion.
I just discovered his music by accident and I am glad I did. It's so relaxing and soothing. Like it calms my spirit. May God continue to be a blessing to the world 🙏🌍. Margaret Bachoo from Trinidad West indies
@@maxc3470there’s nothing wrong with appreciating one voice part from the others. As a soprano, we almost always get the melody. The altos have very soothing and earthly harmonies in a lot of the songs which are interesting to pick apart and listen to Edit: same with tenors and basses, all voice parts are important in order to create something beautiful like this
@@creativeflame_ I'm a second soprano and I agree with you, all parts make it what it is. I just love songs that have the other parts take the lead. It brings such different perspectives and sound with the register differences. Makes me happy to experience them.
We did this yesterday at Northminster Pres. in the Cincinnati Northern Hills suburbs, with full orchestra incl. harp and organ, for our annual Lessons & Carols service. So simple, yet so powerful, moving and emotional, especially on the forte section toward the end. Suggests an other-worldly power behind the silence. Ethereal at the very beginning and again at the very end. I was a mess after we were seated at the end of this, as were several others I noticed.
The song has been around forever but sung in this spectacular background makes it a must have for anybody who appreciates natural landscape renderings.
Our choir and orchestra are performing this tonight - it is so ethereal! Thank you, Dan, for all of your arrangements! You definitely have God's ear.

Hauntingly beautiful! My choir just performed this with a string quartet and it was incredible. LOVE this arrangement!
Goes to show a lot can be done with a simple ascending scale. Thank you again, Mr. Forrest!
