**Important** Forgot to mention, If your iris gets dark in cycles renders it's becuase of shadow of the cornea, Select the Cornea > in shading tab > Shift+A and search for "MixShader" > drop it between Pricncipled Shaders and Material Output > Shift+A and search for "Transparent" > Connect it to "Mix Shader" second shader > Shift+A and Search for "Light Path" > connect the "is shadow ray" to "Mix Shader" Fac - DONE!
This doesn't work for me. Iris appears black inside the cornea. It seems that solidifying cornea helps a little bit, but there's still not enough light. I can make cornea completely transparent, but I can see Iris color perfectly only when the Iris is outside of the cornea.
when texture painting the iris, how do you get the image to be translucent, to see the map under it, and how do you lock it to the position you want so mousewheeling doesn't mess up your size?
OMG the stencil feature, how did I not know about it?! I've been manually placing graphics on UV using photoshop/krita this whole timeeee thank you so much!
pro tip: to create the iris procedurally I like to use a mixture of a color ramp, and 2D noise node, and a flat UV unwrapped iris. Its better imo cause you have more control
Yes, CG cookie already has a great tutorial on that one so i stayed away from that. i agree there's much more control doing that precedurally but it's not as realistic as using textures in my opinion, unless you sculpt the iris details which is not easy for everybody specially for someone who doesn't own a tablet also sculpting it is a tutorial by itself.
@@PixelicaCG yea I mostly create stylized characters so it’s fine for me to compromise on the detail part. Great video though. It’s crazy how i still managed to learn more tricks by watching it even after using blender for over 5 years

To the question of whether it has been tough to make this tutorial, the answer is that I was on the verge of throwing my laptop out the window, hahaha. Damn this is so good and it's actually really easy. The hardest part is finding the iris texture, if you don't want to use your template one. There's a Blender addon where you can use geometry nodes to create the iris textures, but it does cost 40 or 50 bucks.

how did you made eyelashes and eyebrows? Was it the way of your another video using image texture on shading mode? btw always I appreciate of your awesome tutorials. It really helps me a lot.
Just gonna say, I might be more personally invested in somewhat quicker, more stylized Characters for animation... (largely, my own dubious balance of work-flow, personal choice, and flat out slow speed haha) BUT these "over-the-top-realistic" tutorials help with all the tricks, insights, and methodology for taking a character or a part or some other object "as far as I want to go with it" without all the "faff" of just diving into Blender all alone and "flailing blindly at the g** d*** thing". It's worth pointing out that as one slips toward a more "stylized" methodology, it's an easy trap to get into just sacrificing work ethic and details... and you can lose the definitions that keep "new" Characters fresh and original... and the cast eventually reaches a point of losing diversity or even worse "looking off the shelf". It's videos like this one with an intimate approach to every aspect of the "biology of an eye" (for example) that can rescue those of us who haven't thought of that detail before... In any case, commenting for the algorithms and all... Great JOB, and KEEP IT UP! We notice!!! ;o)
i am having difficulty scaling it and positioning in edit mode. The iris dissapears when i shrink it. Maybe something to do with the shading editor texture coordinates???
Left window in the tool menu under texture, I made a red rectangular where you should click, mouse jump in that second so i assume it was hard to follow.
Hi there, thanks for sharing your konwlege. I followed all the steps but when it finished i only got a perfect white and sparkly ball. No iris paint nor veins nor red back of the cornea. Please, can you tell what am I doing wrong? Thank you.
maybe it's because of the color ramp you used to connect to transmission, if the transmission goes wrong obviously the center won't be transparent and the light doesnt go through and u're left with only the sclera.
I'm making a character and I am having trouble fitting the cartoon eye in the socket because it is oval eye sockeye instead of regular eye sockets any tips and tricks so I don't see the inside of the hollow head?

Just commenting bc I had the same problem with textures disappearing, if that can help someone: each time you import an image texture in Blender you have to save (alt+S) the imported file as an image in Blender, in the Texture Paint tab. Otherwise it does not fully import it and gets lost. You will see "Image*" with the asterisk in texture painting tab if you haven't saved your image properly. Cheers!
