+Dojix Same!
+Dojix ikr
+Dojix Agreed. It really is very deep.
+Dojix 1:28-1:47
Did you notice that it's also the fifth bass he plays in the video?
its the sexiest thing ive ever heard
That Rob Allen Deep 5 gives me the shivers every single time.
Want.
you know? that bass made my mouth water.... jeez but he had some pretty tones going through with all of those basses... talk about bass porn!
I know! Bass perfection, right there. Then I looked at the price. Welp, I guess I can eat beans for the foreseeable future.
***** HAHAHA so true!
You're right holy shit
I ama buy it.
"What instrument do you play?" "Cello" "Ok, come here. This is called a bass, its just like a cello, but turn it on its side and CELLO! YOU'VE GOT A BASS!"
That scene's great. But I though Cellos were GDAE just like violins and violas.
No it CGDA LOL
Daniel Weston LOL, that makes it even worst, too far from a bass turned around.
Viola and Cello are CGDA
Ah, School of Rock.
I used to listen this on loop, about 7 years ago. It just appeared in my yt recommendations after many years and I can still remember every note. Love it so much.
right??
me too man, me too
That Deep 5 is the best sounding instrument I've ever heard.
no wonder why they cost 5 grand, those basses are top tier in terms of materials and craftsmanship
That rob Allen deep 5 is the best thing I've ever heard
Same...
Cameron Guarino it reminds me Jaco Pastorius
maybe its just me but... does it sound with a little slow attack?
Pedro Henrique fuck yeah man. I'm reminiscing about dolphin dance, it's my favourite jazz piece.
same
Here's a nifty little time-key for y'all:
0:35(0:00) - Fender Precision (1966)
0:51: Hofner Deluxe Violin Bass
1:02: Gibson SG Bass

4:53: Yamaha BB300/Ellio Martina Bassmute
5:02: Ibanez BTB 705 OL
5:07: A bit more of the Yamaha
5:12: A super low note on some upright bass (The Arco ABG?)
OffsetSolid carefully he’s a hero
the note at 5:12 is a C, a major third below an average bass's low E
@Timur Gavrilov no, it is the Toby chennelle arco bass.
@@ts4gv Thanks !!!!!
OffsetSolid we all came here for the cello that’s was on his lap 😂
Still, great fun to watch a decade later.
Thank you! Cm7 I Abmaj7 I Emaj7 I Eb7#9- Db7#9: The chords are sometimes replaced by alternatives 'spontaneously': the Db7#9 is often approached with the tritone G in the bass: you'll get G7/13 as a result of this.
During the piece some alterations: cm7 is sometimes approached as Cmaj7 for example.
the yamaha bb300 with the bassmute is puzzling to me, with all of the exotic basses he's playing. I have 6 so far and a twist bass...tobias growler with whammy bar.....but a bb300?? Im getting it and a bass mute!!
Would love to have this backing track available!
What are you, a " trust fund " baby?
You are a scary bass player. Wicked man, you really feel the funk.
we need a ten hour version of this!
1:14 Toby Chennell Arco Acoustic Bassguitarがとてもイイネ。
それな クラシックって感じが
In this case, the player's musicianship and richness of playing ideas, is the thing that's making all the basses sound great, though! lol
are you related to a victor?
says the Wooten man himself lads and gents
rob allen deep 5 wot a sound !thumbs up..!
All his basses are wonderful. But that rob allen made me drool.
1:27 to save someone having to scroll :)
One of my all time favorite bass videos on you Tube. No overindulgent, drummer wannabee bippity- bobbity bass! Just an excellent musician playing some really great melodic ideas over cool chord changes. I loved all the basses, but the timbre of the last 'C' on the Esteve, is amazing. The 'F' bass is also killer.
Absolutely. The technicality and feel combined. So well delivered.
I can tell you're british
You have more Bass Guitars than I have clothes...
That was beautiful, and the rob Allen was my favorite
I had a deep five for a while, did not know what a gem it is...
I love the Rick Turner Renaissance Bass.
Daniel Bartleson I know right? It's so special
I have an RB-5F. The fretless is wonderful. Especially with Thomastic AcoustiCore strings which I didn’t like at first, kinda rubberbandy with the nylon cores but they growl so when you dig in. I now have them on my Tacoma ThunderChief fretless 5 as well. Very woody sounding.
You make them all sound good. It takes a skilled musician to bring out the basic character of each instrument. Excellent job and nice playing.
Bart is way off skilled
This guy must be fucking rich
Or he just played all of the basses in some buncha guys' studio.
Then the studio guy must be fucking rich.
Studio guys are rich.
hahaha
He could be mini rich if he sold some of these.
I absolutely fell in love with the Gretsch feel and tone. So mellow and deep. And a gorgeous bass as well!
Rob Allen's sound is marvellous !!!
Fender Jazz! anytime!
Also: all pickups open/ in neutral position, eq's on the basses flat. Except:
Yamaha: tone 70%
Rick Turner: tone 40%
I love how a simple stingray still holds up as a very distinct sounding bass against all those 4K+ models, I live next to the factory, surprised I still don't own one. Really liked the F-bass as well.
Evan J that's what I've always thought was amazing about all of Leo's basses - every model has its own distinct sound and personality, yet all of them are useable in almost every musical context. More or less, any one of his basses can be used for anything, given the right settings and EQ, and that's something to be said from an engineering standpoint. The man was a genius
I think my favorite parts are when the voicings layer over each other for a brief moment. Always fills my hearts a bit hearing these voices sing together.
this is a good example of how import the player is for each and every bass... you can hear the difference between them... but NONE sound bad.
i hate you.
Because this video should last longer. i want the same but for 20 minutes please.
its finish so fast that it made me get back to real life. PLEASE MORE
5 years later, still in love with that video
The F bass sounds astonishing, better than the Fodera.
Rob allen Deep bass also amazing. And the Esteve....Wow, it's a bass sounding right like a classical guitar. Conglaturations for the shoot out.
I just love the sound of the fodera it's so clear and present
found this song in early 2014 and i still get over it...such an awesome song...only if it had sheet music.
Best to have all of them, good to have any.
The violin bass was suprisingly very much rock sounding.
My God, I REALLY want that Rickenbacker!
+ChidoriSnake I really want the fodera emperor, at the moment I have a fretless squier jazz bass and a stingray/fleabass and for my next gig i can use a yamaha p/j
dude, I just got one this year after saving up since i was 5 (I'm 20 in a few days) and it was the best purchase I've ever made. II put a toaster pickup in mine. but if you ever get the chance try one. make sure you play one first though. it feels like you're playing a baseball bat because the neck is so thick. but I absolutely love mine. highly recommend one.
Fuck off you didn't even know how to play bass at 5, let alone what a Rickenbacker was. Lying ass.
MuscleDad420 don't care, dude. Believe what you will. I know my story, I was there. You can believe whatever you want. Doesn't bug me.
I believe you're a compulsive liar. I don't believe you own a Rickenbacker. I believe you own samurai swords and are a bronie.
I always come back to this video
Thank you! The Yamaha has D'Addario Chromes Flatwounds and off course the Ellio Martina Bassmute, no further modifications!
great tone on that fender jazz bass deluxe!
I love those bass sounds. I just heard it from my Bose speakers with the subwoofer which are hooked up from the a/v switcher, and they sound beautiful.
1:20 and the Rob Allen Deep 5 are easily my two favorites
I'm old school minded, really. But the sounds of all the basses in this video are all so very spot on. Because of that they are all of true beauty and honest to their design and purpose. And, the playing is really terrific. This player so much understands his music and the various tonal qualities of his instruments in the context of it. These different basses all deserve a player like him, really. This is a lesson to me, and I feel somewhat guilty that my basses don't get to shine in their own tonal niche, like the ones in this video do...
Extremely tasteful playing, Bart. Thanks for the demos.
I come back to this video every few months just to hear the Deep 5
That was amazing and that Rob five was sooo deep my walls were shaking, absolutely stunning tone (and stunning playing as well). However, I felt the lack of a Warwick
The höfner deluxe violin sounds perfect
That's what I was thinking
That was my first bass. Well, a copy.
The Rob Allen sound is really amazing, and also the F-Bass'. What a gorgeous sound! Great video, thanks for making it!
really enjoyed seeing all these beauties being competently played
great playing and beautiful bass collection !
The groove...amazing!
Sometimes...words just are not enough to express feelings......THIS video is one of those times! Thanks so much for the upload! Cheers All
GREAT sound quality and immaculate playing! Really loved the wide, eclectic variety of basses and the inclusion on of acoustic/electric as well. Thanks!
КАЙФ!!! Получил огромное эстетическое удовольствие!!!
F-bass BN-5 sounds amazing.
what a great idea here~~thx for the tour, ehya
What a great demonstration of the different sounds each instrument offers! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing all of the different basses and demonstrating their distinct sounds. Very informative :). You are a truly gifted player and also have a very nice collection of bass guitars.
I love the Arco Acoustic Bassguitar's sound :)
1:19 my man that’s a whole cello
I've watched this so many times, I've started to remember note by note every single line from every bass.
Very nice!
Great way of hearing the differences in basses, Well done.
Thank you Thank you
I noticed a rising action, climax and a falling action with the music. It was mellow it the beginning, slowly getting more lively. When it reached it peak, the music got more slappy and energetic. Then it slowly got more calmer towards the end of the song, resolving to those low thumps of the last bass.
Me big brain
That Deep 5, oh my god
Beautifully played, photographed, and recorded! Thank you!
This is one of my few favorite videos on this website. Incredible.
Beautiful playing, and a great concept for a video! I just wish for this demo that the keys weren't so loud in the mix. Thank you for this.
How did you afford all of those basses holy shit
Stгคzzเyค B๏ςђภ๏ש IV very good question you sir
i knowww man! and most of his basses are not very common to find 😂
He's locked away in a madman's bass guitar collection museum and forced to play bass in exchange for food and water.
hahahaha
Pretty sure he makes music and teaches at a university for a living if you look at his website
Very well done… Thank you for publishing
Awesome video, and great playing too!
Which bass? Well... why not all of 'em!
How could you not play the Takamine TB10?!!!!!!
Great video, Bart!
I've watched it 10 times already.
Absolutely incredible.
I am never bored to watch and listen to this video. I Open at least 2-3 times a month and leave myself in the arms of the bass and jazz. It every time fascinating!
this groove almost reminds me of flying lotus
flying lotus is jazz-inspired
Simply amazing!
What about the strings on the Precision?...flatwound or roundwound?
Hello there! Those are DR Lo-riders roundwounds.
Bart Soeters Dear Bart. I own a '76 pbass. Can you tell me what chain you've used to obtain such a fat beautiful pbass sound?:)
Hello Bartoz, Fender P-Bass direct signal mixed with mic (I've to check with the engineer which one) in front of Glockenklang!
Kind regards, Bart
roundwound DR
Thanks Bart. It seems i should try a Glockenklang:)
What a collection of incredible tones. Beautifully played. Well done.
I don't even know how many times I watched this (and I started soon after it was first published)... It is so great: especially the way you express the voice of each individual instrument... Thanks for sharing... Ciao...
The F bass is perfect
koel dat je op mijn nieuwe cd speelt!
+Herman Pouderoyen
Dank Herman! Wederzijds!
This video popped into my mind after years and I decided to watch it again. Great video, great playing and great basses
Great playing! Wonderful!
this is the best sample video I've come across so far. nice groove
reminds me of gran turismo
Terrific sounds, really lovin that Toby Chennell Bass - how did you manage to get that low C out of the 4-string in the end? Just tuned it down? Sounds quiet but very stable!
Thanks! It has a Hipshot D (C)-tuner.
yeah they make Hipshots for uprights now. and Hipshot sells the piece you add to an extender to give it two options. that is, instead of dropping from E to D only, you might drop down as low as C... idk how much control the user has over the range and don't have much experience with extenders. I just use my ear and turn the key. but I would be interested in running 4 Hipshots with those pieces and rigging up my own sort of manring style hyperbass. anyone know whether that would be feasible?
also, did you only happen to use the extender? sent couldn't you just have tuned down? I can't remember if a type of octobass was in the video and can't consult the notes on the video while writing this comment, but on the bass we're talking about, what's the original range and the tuning the Hipshot allows?
can he play that upright?
Bro I totally heard of C-Extensions. But this is not a regular upright sizewise (although you can play it upright which is why I love it) and an extension is obviously not visible when he plays the Chennell at around 01:20. That is why I asked the question which was answered quite a while ago by Bart himself (Hipshot extender in the tuning machine).
The upright Hipshot Xtenders work really well, the main problem with them is actually the strings themselves and the fine tuning until the drop interval is clean - if I remember correctly steel strings are better because they don't lengthen as much as synthetics.
a marvellous piece of artwork... both for the instruments and the musician's quality
Thanks for posting this, great demo, great tune.
No one needs that many bases my wife would never allow this
May we discuss tabs? 😄
no.
You need to understand the context of these chords not just tab. If you just want to copy the notes he's playing you can listen and look.
What an awesome video. I love those fender jazz basses, especially that Deluxe! The fretless were awesome too and that F bass. Bravo! Great chords and solos!
Love this. Spot on playing and a generally great showcase of these wonderful instruments. I'm surprised how nice the Ric sounds in this setting.
You need to practice more. Just kidding - you should practice less. still joking, we need these skills to stay sharp. now what the hell am I talking about
I like you.
I like people that like people that say nonsense things
i like people that like people that like people that say nonsense things
I like people that like people that like people that like people that say nonsense things
Penis
that song was called: "when I win the lottery"
Impressive playing, and even more impressive collection.
lmao I've never seen an upright played like an electric, must be 1/2 or 3/4 size
Andrew Teller In actual upright sizes this would be maybe a 1/8th, probably less
3/4 is the standard size, and that was closer to being a cello or a 1/16 bass.
No way he's playing a 1/2 size like that. It's at least 1/8
TechnoMonkey you dont know if hes a giant or not soooooo
Token, lay down a bass line
I don't know how to play
Damn it token just lay down a bas line
(Plays bass)
Damn it
that is just amazing. Well done in every aspect !!!
Still jamming to your grooves after 6 years 🤘🏻
youtube 2020 be like:
1:16 mate, thats not how you play a cello
umm... haven't you ever heard of a double bass? I think you're talking about a double bass. usually played with a bow, that is.
@@eelamite it's a joke, a bass is a lot larger than that, so it's more like a cello
Amazing. What an amount of options!
The Rob Allen bass sounds amazing! You sound like a totally different player with each bass. Thanks for uploading!
Davie504 likes this.
Man davey can't touch this. He's technical as fuck but never made me FEEL anything. Maybe that can be his next challenge.
too many basses.....
still not enough!
