Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, choral singing in close quarters has been put on hold for the foreseeable future in most states and territories in Australia. However, this has provided a unique opportunity to turn this situation into something positive. 40 incredible singers from around Australia united together in a virtual, online context to perform one of the greatest pieces to sit within the choral music repertoire: Thomas Tallis’s epic 40-part motet Spem in Alium.

@@nickcaddick4209 Just briefly, Nick, a friend in Austria told me how upset she was because her Australian friend, who was finding life to be a little too hard, was in an Adelaide hospital. Some hours later I heard this (my favourite choral piece) and it was as though you were all singing to give your fellow Aussie hope (you are singing to give us ALL hope) so I sent it to my friend and she hopes to send it to him in hospital. I wish you all a peaceful Christmas and a New Year free from worry. Thank you again for this gorgeous piece. Robert

My ancestor’s brother went to Tasmania for seven years in the 1840s and decided to stay, becoming a boatbuilder. Unfortunately the trip out there wasn’t exactly first class - it was a transport ship. He burned down a farmer’s barn in Essex. His descendants still live there. God bless you and have a happy and healthy life. Robert (Merchant) in England.

That's quite a feat to pull off! Amazing, thank you - and (so Zoom DOES have its uses lol) for the first time it's possible to see so clearly which singers in which of the 8 choirs is singing at any one time. Love it, thank you!

In fact, it wasn't recorded in Zoom - everyone recorded their individual parts (including rests!) and then it was edited in Adobe Premiere and audio mixed and mastered separately. A painstakingly arduous process, but well worth it in the end! Thanks again for your kind words. So glad you enjoyed it!

This was fantastic. I love the way you have the singers arranged to show the structure of the piece. If I was to ask for anything more, it would be stereo mixing that places you in the centre of a semicircle of choirs, so the visual structure is replicated in the stereo mix.

The same Andrew Fysh I was at school with?
Would it be possible for you to publish all 40 individual tracks, perhaps at Creative Commons, GitHub, or Soundcloud? It would be of great academic and educational value, allowing students of polyphony and composition to hear how each part works individually, and together. The existing available midi tracks just aren't the same.

Why is it sped up? It takes away from the resting feeling that the words convey and it seems less of a prayer. Beautiful voices and great blending, but a bit chaotic at this speed. The last section was glorious!
Thank you for the very positive response, Thucydides! :-) I'm not sure that it is "sped up", the tactus may be slightly quicker than most interpretations - but I don't think that detracts from the overall meaning of the text, either.

In an age where being young seems to be everything to some people, I feel that older singers with a maturity only the experience of life can bring , are able to add real understanding and depth to this extraordinary piece.
