Thanks for taking the time to explain the difficulties you had, what you did wrong, what you'll try next time etc. Looks like you managed to solve the problems well.
Awesome video. Seems like eps and epoxy materials easier to get for the backyard builder than poly. Can’t wait to get my shop/tent setup and build a few. Thanks.
I don't know how to surf, but I love watching all your videos. Maybe someday I will learn. Living in Oregon our costal waters are so cold year round that I don't think it's a good place to learn. Thanks for the great videos.
YEEEEWWW! Thanks for the video! I can only get EPS blanks in my area (without paying wild amounts for shipping), so it's good to see it done and to hear some of the challenges. Enjoy the ranch! Well deserved!
Awesome video mate! I use only epoxy for my boards, I hate the smell of polyester resin. What you said about sealing the blank: don't do it. In time the board will delaminate, the sealing (q cell especially) won't allow a strong bond between the blank and the laminate. But if you still do it, make sure you seal the whole blank, otherwise you'll have different shades of colour on your board. Also, about your masking tape, gently press it with a spoon when you stick it on the blank. Works like a dream! Enjoy your time at the ranch, maybe the GOAT rides one of your boards! 💪👍
I was going to ask about that too! The only board I've built followed a guide from over 10 years ago & it actually recommended a slight rough sanding for more "tooth". So I too am skeptical of the newer EPS sealing advice but by no means experienced or expert.
Thanks for the tips man. Yeah I’ve heard some seal it and others don’t so I figured I’d save the time doing it. The masking tape was driving me crazy! I pressed it down with the back of my razor but every time it bled through. Never had that issue with poly resin.
@@BendheimBoards I have no experience masking epoxy so no help there. I know guys like Andrew W on UA-cam have had success. I sure like the light weight and durability of EPS / epoxy boards though!
Yew, sweet board once again. I’m currently working on an 8’6 with a black-ish bottom and rail cut lap. Really digging that black pin stripe down the stringer line. Also, glad you showed the relief cuts on the ends, as well the sanding of where the laps crease over before doing the inlay and top lam. Also how you addressed the bleed through. Wish I would have had those on the first two boards. By the second board, I starting figuring out, and to keep sanding until the creases were flat and be careful but not worry too much about the ruining the color and just make it flat. Hard to find any videos where they show those two steps in the process close enough to really see it. Keep up these videos, such great content. And KS’s wave?!? Sweeet, big timing now!
i heard one tip to overcome bleeding is to paint the base color first before painting on the color that you want. i think that's what they do with painting
Sick board man! When i did my first eps i sealed it with microballoons wich worked wonderfull, took some time but it might help with the bleeding lines on the cutlaps. Keep it up :)
If I could ever make a board as good as yours I would be ecstatic, happy as a pig in sh,t you might say lol, awesome job you did mate well done be proud of it , awesome board man.👍
A couple questions, please.... 1) On my next board (EPS & epoxy) I want yellow rails top and bottom with a clear bottom and deck. I will paint the rails with yellow acrylic before I start glassing. I know how to mask this off when the width of where I’ll apply the paint is the same from nose to tail (kind of like you did at the beginning of this video). Thing is, I want the area on the rails where I’ll paint to get narrower as it approaches the nose and tail. I was wondering if you can suggest an accurate way to mask off this taper so it’s even? 2) Did you buy the black and white markers and pre-cut tape covers for the fin boxes at Greenlight? Your video are the best! Thanks for taking the time to film, edit and upload these.😀 Congratulations on getting to surf Slaters wave!🏄🏻♂️
I’ve never tapered off my cutlaps but I understand what your trying to accomplish. Maybe try measuring how far in you want the colored rails and mark them with dots and then pull your tape connecting the dots. The tape will help you get a more even transition. I used posca paint pens in this video. Each FCS 2 fin box you buy comes with two precut tape covers for glassing which is what I was using. Good luck!
still, despite the circumstances with being new to EPS and Epoxy, a dope end result! Enjoy the lighter and more floating aspect of EPS in the wavepool!
I'm getting ready to glass my first board. Really appreciate your videos. I've been watching them before I go out and work on my board. What do you use to clean up your tools? Acetone?
What is that little pen you use before glassing the top deck? (1:44) What does that help with? Also, is that just a permanent marker at the (2:30) mark? Do you think I should do a white tint on the top deck? I was going to try clear..have you tried going clear on the top? I'm going to glass a board with this same color scheme and I'd be stoked if it came out half as good as yours. Thanks for sharing!
Those are Posca paint pens. I just used them to clean up the color that bled through. You don’t have to color the deck with white, especially if your doing PU foam. This board was EPS foam and I didn’t want the texture showing through a clear coat. If your doing EPS you could also seal the deck to avoid using white.
What were you using to sand the rough edges between bottom and deck laminations and hot coats? It looked like a stripping disc but not sure. By the way, thank you for making these videos, I really enjoy them!
Can you go over how you performed your cut lap? I have attempted one before on the bottom and when I glassed the deck, you could see the places where my razor cut into the blank.
I’m no expert but you want to cut before the board is cured but hard enough to flip. For me it’s around 1.5 hr on poly resin and around 3hr for epoxy. You can cut straight into the rail like me or do what they call a zipper cut which takes some practice. Just keep at it man and learn from the mistakes 🤙
Hey tanner! Awesome tint job, the board came out awesome. Just wondering, isn’t the board a bit heavy due to the multiple resin layers? See ya! Enjoy surf ranch
How are you making your hot coats so good? Every time that I’m trying to do hot coats with epoxy I get those weird fish eyes. Anyone know what I’m doing wrong?
Make sure your wearing gloves and not touching the board with your hands. Oils from your hands or other debris like dust can cause it. Greenlight epoxy resin has worked really well for me.
I am glassing a poly board with poly resin and I’m just curious how long the resin should take to fully harden and how long I should wait in between laminations and between the top lamination and the hot coat? And how long I should wait until I sand the hot coat?
@@micahsawyer2055 Check it every 30 min until its ready to flip. Hard enough to be able to flip but soft enough to cut. Maybe an hour to 1.5 hr. I'm having a hard time remembering since I''m working with epoxy and its so much longer now. just babysit it.
@@BendheimBoards ok sounds good! Thank you for the advice. And I just have one more question for you, would you recommend a free lap or cut lap? I’m just a bit worried a free lap might look sloppy but I’ll be using fully clear resin or maybe not, let me know what you think.
