I would add Understood Betsy to your list. She is also an orphan and the aunt who has been caring for her has to send her off to other relatives. It definitely qualifies as heartwarming. It was published in 1917.
I need to read more by Frances Hodgson Burnett - I've only read her most famous ones (Secret Garden, Little Princess, Little Lord Fauntleroy). But I know she wrote quite a few more. The Fair Barbarian sounds interesting!
Great video! I've never heard of A Fair Barbarian. I need to try and get that! I think I've read all the others, but maybe only abridged versions of Heidi and Pollyanna. I love them all!
Hi Mitzi great suggestions. Racking my brain for something to add....A Girl of the Limberlost for young independant lady and nature, for more on Anne- Before Anne by Budge Wilson and for found family- Pictures of Hollis Woods. I cant remember if you have mentioned reading any of those in your other videos?
I love all the Anne books, that is one of the nice things about the Anne Shirley books is that she wrote so many more , so you get to watch Anne grow up.
In the '80 I grew up watching the anime Heidi, it was fantastic!!! And in my teens I read the book. I would recommend the french book Nobody's Girl by Hector Malot, it says that it was translated to English with the title The Story of Perrine
There are a lot of elements of Anne in Understood Betsy without it being too close. It's more like a young Valancy Stirling and Anne Shirley smushed together.
Those are great comps. I am interested in A Fair Barbarian. I was just thinking that A Secret Garden would also be a good suggestion. A great one, that shows a girl on the brink of womanhood is Daddy-Long-Legs. It's done through letters and is divine.
❤️📚❤️ Thank you for the recommendations. The only one I haven't read, or even heard of, is A Fair Barbarian. It's always exciting hearing about a new book that you think you'll enjoy!
I also would add Understood Betsy to the list. Very good. "Odd", I bought a beautiful copy of Heidi last month! I read Jane Of Lantern Hill when I bought it for my daughters many, many years ago. I bought them EVERY Montgomery book (children's) that I could find. They are adults now. Would love to get The Fair Barbarian. Thanks so much Mitzi!
I have never read Heidi, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, or A Fair Barbarian. I need to change that since I love Anne of Green Gables. I really enjoyed Pollyanna and Jane of Lantern Hill. I recently read Bright Island by Mabel Robinson, and Thankful Curtis reminded me of Anne. It was a wonderful read, and it’s a Newbery winner. Terrific recommendations, Mitzi! 😊
This is so fun! I’ve never heard of a Fair Barbarian, but I love that author so I will try that one! This made me think of another book called Up A Road Slowly, also a great one in this genre. Honestly you could just read all of Montgomery’s books, I did! The Emily of New Moon series is also in this similar vein and I loved that series more than Jane of Lantern Hill personally. But Jane is great too.
I never read poliana but I watched the movie. Maybe I’ll read the book and count it for a historical fiction adaptation for historithon. It’s old so counts!
Those are some beautiful book covers! I’m going to add these wonderful stories to my tbr for the L. M Montgomery reading month. I thought of two more contemporary stories that are kind of similar… How about Pippi Longstocking by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren and the Eloise series written and drawn by Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight. They both feature a young girl living in situations without their own parents and they have quite the imagination and adventures. It’s interesting… all these stories are about young girls who are in situations where they basically have to stand up for themselves and learn how to enjoy life at the same time. They also seem like the more modern versions of the serious stories like what Jane Austen wrote and some of the Victorian authors too.
I have read Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm, I remembered that I really enjoyed it! I need to do a reread of it. Pollyanna is a lovely story and I saw the Disney film as a child. It actually made me want to be nicer!😅.
Please if people are going to read Heidi and Pollyanna read unabridged versions. The abridgments always take out so much of the value. Also don't think if you habe watched the Disney version movies that you know these stories. So much is different and missing, especially from Pollyanna.
I think I’m the only person in the world who absolutely hated Anne of Green Gables. I found her character was so annoying and insufferable, I stopped reading halfway thru the book. But I do love all of your other book suggestions on your videos, I’ve found some great reads from watching your channel so thank you! 😀

Loved Understood Betsy!
The early 1900s seems to be my sweet spot with reading! Thanks!
I agree.
I just finished reading Jane of Lantern Hill an hour ago. ❤
I love that book so much!!
oh fun!! That's a great kickstart to the #moremontgomerychallenge!!
I need to read more by Frances Hodgson Burnett - I've only read her most famous ones (Secret Garden, Little Princess, Little Lord Fauntleroy). But I know she wrote quite a few more. The Fair Barbarian sounds interesting!
I still need to read Little Lord Fauntleroy!
@@mitzireadsandwritesIt is a real treat!

Only A Girl of the Limberlost and I thought of that one, but I was limited to 5 lol. Thanks! I'll check out the others.
I love all the Anne books, that is one of the nice things about the Anne Shirley books is that she wrote so many more , so you get to watch Anne grow up.
I love that, too! It's wonderful to see her grow up and then have kids of her own.
I love Frances Hodgson Burnett! She has so many underrated books!
I was so surprised because I'd never even heard of that one! I'm on the lookout for more!

Oh, thank you! I'm going to add that one to my TBR!!

that actually sounds great!

I have Daddy Long Legs on my shelf, but still need to read it. Thanks for mentioning it! I'll try to read that one soon!
@@mitzireadsandwrites A book club I was in read it, and I liked it much more than I thought I would.
Great choices. I haven’t read the Fair Barbarian, but I love the others

Oh, how fun! Enjoy your new copy of Heidi!
I read Heidi for middle grade March this year and l was so glad I did!
That's why I love these readathons! Gives me a chance to read all of these classics!
I have never read Heidi, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, or A Fair Barbarian. I need to change that since I love Anne of Green Gables. I really enjoyed Pollyanna and Jane of Lantern Hill. Yay for a Newbery recommendation! Thanks!
Just borrowed Jane of lantern hill from the library. And Pollyanna is on audible plus.
Thanks for all the suggestions 😊
Good idea. I immediately thought of Pollyanna. That is such a cute copy! I need to reread this one.
Yes! I loved that edition- couldn't resist it!
I love Heidi, the descriptions are delightful. Not read Rebecca, Pollyanna, A Fair Barbarian or Jane of Lantern Hill. Great recommendations.
Oh, I hope you'll try those!
I love Heidi and wanted to read the sequels! I also saw 2 versions of the movie.
I need to read the sequels, too!

Great suggestions, thank you! I read Heidi earlier this year and adored it; I will check out the others. 🙂
Oh, I think you'll enjoy these others then, too!
I never read poliana but I watched the movie. Maybe I’ll read the book and count it for a historical fiction adaptation for historithon. It’s old so counts!
Thanks for the recommendations because i found them all on hoopla

What a great observation!!! I love this! I loved Pippi Longstocking and Eloise and you're right- so similar to the Anne books. thanks so much.
Love this video! I suggest Little Lord Fauntleroy and Understood Betsy.
Thanks! Those are actually on my TBR, so happy to know they're similar!
I have read Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm, I remembered that I really enjoyed it! I need to do a reread of it. Pollyanna is a lovely story and I saw the Disney film as a child. It actually made me want to be nicer!😅.
well that's a great thing 😂
I adore Jane of Lantern Hill ❤
Understood Betsy by Dorothy Fisher is my recommendation 😊
thanks! I need to read that one!!
I love Anne of Green Gables and Pollyanna
same!!
For some reason, Rebecca made me nuts! I tried reading the book after seeing the movie and just didn’t warm up to her. Maybe I will now as an adult.
Yeah, Rebecca is not as good as I expected, either. Still, it's a wholesome sweet read.
