Has anyone seen Anne with an E? After the cancellation and abrupt ending of the TV series I am left wanting to see Anne's story continue.. although the books deviate from the TV show plotline should I begin reading at book 2, or perhaphs book 3, so that I do not have to start at the very beginning just to continue? Any advice will be appreciated, thank you all ❤ P.S, You are extremley well spoken Meghan and I can feel your passion for this series!! Thank you!
Thanks so much, Katherine! I'd recommend starting at the beginning with book 1 since it is so different from the TV show that it might be confusing to jump right into book 2. That being said, I'm sure you could still understand most of what is going on.
Anne with an E wasn't a Good series / show. however Road to Avonlea is Really Good. me & my Wife just started watching Emily of New Moon. it seems Good so far.
I never read the Anne of Green Gables series as a kid (I was more of a Little House kid!) and just recently discovered Anne at the age of 35. I love them! Just finished Anne of Avonlea and I'm diving right into Anne of the Island. Love to see series rankings. Thanks for the video!
Oh, I'm so glad that you discovered the books and that you'll be getting to Anne of the Island soon! Such a good one. I loved Little House too! I think I was Laura Ingalls every year for Halloween 😆
Your top three surprised me, although your reasoning makes perfect sense. Also I love how you stay so positive while explaining why you rank a book at the bottom of your list.
I loved the relationship of friends between Walter and Rilla and the way Walter saw things in a beautiful way Walter is my favorite character and is the image of his mother
After seeing your comment on my Betsy-Tacy video I went to your channel and have been binge watching your fabulous videos! I'm so so pleased to have introduced you to the Betsy-Tacy series and I look forward to seeing many more videos from you!
I'm so glad you've come over to my channel! I love your videos and have been watching them for a long time. You really inspired me to start making videos! When you recommend something I always know it will be good because you are totally a kindred spirit.
Thank you for your insight on, "Anne of Windy Poplars, " I am reading this at the moment and struggling through it; I appreciate your commentary on this book--I might skip ahead to the next one in the series and come back to it later :)
Thanks! Better to do that then to miss out on all the goodness of the next books! I'm glad the video was helpful and that you haven't given up on the series.
I don't know that I can rank the Anne books in my mind. I tend to think of the series as one big long story. When I think of the Anne stories and my memories of reading and rereading them over the years, it's one whole story, and I find it hard to separate favorites or least favorites. It was definitely interesting to see your rankings though!
We have watched / Have All of the Anne Series on DVD & Road to Avonlea. Just started watching Emily of new Moon. just curious on where the Avonlea fits into the whole story. because theres Anne of Avonlea & The Book & TV Series Road to Avonlea. which does have Marilla & Rachel Lynd in it. My wife is from PEI & we are going there Again this summer.
That’s awesome that you and your family are so into Anne and the adaptations! The first three books of the series are Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island. Chronicles of Avonlea is a short story collection that was published between books 2 and 3, and is not technically part of the Anne of Green Gables series. While it features Anne and some other Avonlea characters, it kind of stands alone. When you read the stories though, it seems to take place between books 2 and 3. It is also followed up by Further Chronicles of Avonlea which was published several years later. Road to Avonlea is a wonderful TV series created by Kevin Sullivan (as you know of course) which draws from these two short story collections. More than that though, the TV show draws from a different LM Montgomery duology, The Story Girl and its sequel, The Golden Road. These books take place in a different town than Avonlea and do not involve any of the Anne of Green Gables characters. These are the books that Sara, Felix, Felicity, and the rest of the King family come from. Kevin Sullivan brilliantly transplants them to Avonlea, incorporates their stories with the Chronicles stories, and adds plenty of his own creativity. I hope that makes sense, and that you have an amazing time in PEI!
So far I have only read the first 4 and at the moment I like them in this order ... Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island last. I was really pleasantly surprised by Anne of Windy Poplars because I had heard that it wasn't a favourite of many Anne fans. I kind of liked that it read like a book of short stories rather than a novel. I loved her letters to Gilbert and it actually made me cry when Katherine with a K spends Christmas with Anne at Green Gables. It just reignited all the Anne feelings that I've had from growing up with the movies. I personally felt Anne of the Island was missing that. I didn't really like the new characters... in fact at the moment I can't really even recall everything that happens in that book... other than Anne gets proposed to a whole lot of times. The one part I did love, of course, is the ending, which is one of my favourite scenes from the movies too. Really looking forward to reading more in the series, especially since so many fans love the books with the Blythe children.
I love that you love Anne of Windy Poplars so much. It's rare to hear that, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. That scene where Katherine goes to Green Gables is amazing!
It’s oddly gratifying to find someone with a very similar ranking lol. The only thing I would swap personally is the placement of Anne’s House of dreams and Rainbow valley but 3 and 8 are the kind of books I just want to hug every time I finish them as weird as that sounds. I love them.
This was so great! i'm still only halfway through the series but I am hoping to finish the series this summer. Right now Anne of the Island and Anne of Green Gables are tied for my favorites but I've always had a sneaking suspicion that Rilla is going to tie with them when I get to that one. You've also made me so excited that Anne's House of Dreams is my next read in the series because it makes me very happy that you said that the feel is the same as the end of Anne of the Island :D.
I'm so glad you're going to finish the series this summer! Rilla is SO GOOD. It makes me really happy when I find other Anne fans! Keep me posted on your thoughts :)
This is very close to how I would rank the series, I think. Rilla is definitely my favorite of the series. I love and adore it. Part of that is, like you said, that it has such a wide range of emotions presented because it was during war time. I also think it's very true to life for that reason - she was likely writing this book while the war was happening, so it's a real look at what many people would have been experiencing during the time. Rilla is also a fantastic character.
Agreed! Yes, I love that when she wrote Rilla, it was a contemporary novel. She wasn't looking back on the war, she was writing it as things were happening. That brings an energy and perspective to it that wouldn't otherwise be there!
Hi, Meghan, I’m a new subscriber to your channel and I’m absolutely loving all your Anne content! Anne of Green Gables was my first ever classic book and I was obsessed with the film since I was three or four years old. It’s always nice to find kindred spirits on UA-cam who love her as much as I do! 😀
I love meeting other Anne fans! I'm so glad that you love her too. It's such a wonderful story and I love to slip into that world every so often :) The movies are so great!
Hi Megan! Thanks for sharing the Anne series. I was luckily able to find the rest of the series recently at a used book store. It's difficult to find the later books, especially after Island. You're right, some of the the best books are later in ther series. I just finished House of Dreams and it was easily a favorite.
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 I attempt to read them in the original publication order, or as close to it. I will skip Windy Poplars for now. I might take a small break from Anne for a short time. It's strange that Anne's grown up and now has children. Should i go straight into Rainbow Valley, or Anne of Ingleside?
Good idea on skipping Windy Poplars for now. I'd probably go ahead and read Anne of Ingleside before Rainbow Valley, but it can go either way really. You are making me want to read these again!
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 thanks Meghan! It doesn't hurt to reread. Despite the debate of Publication vs. Chronological order (especially the Narnia series), I enjoy the flexibility of having options.

I loved Anne as a child and recently reread them as an adult and I got stuck after Windy Poplars. You’ve convinced me to give the rest of the series a chance. Have you seen the Netflix adaptation Anne with an E I think it’s called. It seems much darker than the original adaptation.
I'm glad you're going to give the rest of the series another chance! I saw parts of the first season of Anne With an E. I'm such a purist that I put it off for a long time. My friend who had already seen it showed it to me and skipped over all the parts that she knew would get me riled up! So I enjoyed parts of what I saw and it was very well done, but it's just really not Anne of Green Gables. Although I think LM Montgomery would have loved it! Have you seen it yet?
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 I've watched the 1st season. I think there's a few more out. I liked it ok. At first I really didn't like it because the tone is so different. After I viewed it as a show on its own instead of following the books, I was able to enjoy it.
@@lindseyreads5450 you got me rewatching an episode last night and it truly is a beautiful show! I can still only handle parts of it, but those parts I like, I love!
Ooh let me know if you do! If you need inspiration, there's a wonderful musical based on Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island called Anne and Gilbert. You can get the soundtrack and also the script online. There's little UA-cam clips of it too. It's one of my favourite musicals!
I'm a brazilian fan of anne of green gables and i want to buy an english version to train my reading I'm in doubt between anne of avonlea and anne of the island haha
That's awesome that you're using it to help with your English! So glad you're an Anne fan. Are you wondering which one to read first? I would go with Anne of Avonlea since it comes before Anne of the Island in the series order and in when LM Montgomery wrote it ❤
I just started to read the Anne book, when I brought the first book last saturday. Also, I just ordered Anne of Windy Willows / Poplars a few days ago then I saw tis video. I am scared now to read Anne of Windy Poplars when some people have a hard time finishing it. Since I already buy it, then I just have to read it then. Plus, I planned to only read until Book 6. I want your opinion if you don't mind. Should I read all 8 books to understand the story without cliffhanger? Or reading until book 6 is just enough to conclude Anne's story? But when you explain about Rilla, I felt like I want to read it.
So glad you're loving the Anne books! I would definitely say that books 4 and 6 are my least favourite (Anne of Windy Poplars and Anne of Ingleside), and that books 7 and 8 are amazing (Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside). Since LM Montgomery wrote books 4 and 6 after she wrote the rest of the series, you don't need to read them to understand the later books. In fact, she didn't want to write them, but was forced to! They're still good books of course, but I personally like the later ones a lot more even though they're about Anne's kids 😊
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 thank you for your reply, it really helps a lot for me to decide which book to get next. Since you said the Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside is a good story, it makes me want to buy the book and read about them so much, thank you 🥰🥰
Does Anne become more likeable and relatable as she matures into an adult? I'm in my 20s and I'm reading Anne for the first time. I have grown up watching a few episodes of Road to Avonlea. I recognize all of the Kevin Sullivan miniseries/films of Anne, however I didn't watch them much. I've always loved the world of Avonlea, but I didn't really know Anne's story until recent years with the new "Anne with an E" show. I hope this makes sense.
Oh, interesting! Anne With an E is quite different from AGG, but I love a lot of aspects of it. In the books, Anne is very precocious, thoughtful, talkative and imaginative as a child. She's well meaning but gets into a lot of scrapes, and holds onto her pride long after she has forgiven others. (Exhibit A: Gilbert.) As she grows up, she becomes quieter and less flighty, although her imagination remains strong and a central part of her personality. She definitely grows and matures into a relatable young woman although she essentially stays the same. She says to Marilla near the end of AGG, “I'm not a bit changed--not really. I'm only just pruned down and branched out. The real ME--back here--is just the same.”
I love anne of the island too!I got upset when I read anne of green gables(although it's my second favourite book) and anne of avonlea as anne never truly had confessed her feeling s for Gilbert. However, in anne of the island they end up together so I guess that's why I love it so much. Btw your channel's great😊 I dont know if I'm gonna be able to read book 4(Anne's house of dreams) straight after reading anne of the island as I dont have the forth book.Would you advice me to still read anne of windy poplars right after reading Anne of the island?
I'm so glad you love Anne of the Island! If you don't have a copy of Anne of Windy Poplars I think it totally makes sense to go straight to book 5, Anne's House of Dreams. Anne of Windy Poplars wasn't published until later so that's actually how the original readers were meant to read them!
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 thank you so much for replying!I think I might end up reading Anne's house of dreams now because I'm scared I'll stop reading the rest if I read anne of windy poplars. Thanks for your advice😊
@@sweetprincess2019 The next book in the series is Anne of Ingleside, then Rainbow Valley and then Rilla of Ingleside. I especially love Rilla of Ingleside! LM Montgomery also has a beautiful stand alone novel called The Blue Castle which I love!
Most people automatically read them in chronological order of Anne's life (that's how they're presented in the box sets), but I think the series is actually better in publication order. Since that's the way Montgomery originally planned them to be read, I feel that the momentum and flow is much stronger that way. So the order would be 12357846 😊
hi i’m not sure if you will read this as this came out quite a while ago but i need the opinion of someone who’s read the series and i can’t find the answer online! i’m only just getting into anne of green gables (mainly because i’m absolutely in love with the show anne with an e and i had to read the books) so i’ve ordered the box set of what i thought was the whole series but it’s got the first three, the 5th (house of dreams) and that 7th (rainbow valley) and 8th (rilla of ingleside). I’m unsure why they missed out on the 4th and 6th books (windy willows and anne of ingleside), but i was considering purchasing them both separately. Do you think it is worth it? Or do you think i’ll be okay with just reading the ones i have. I just want to make sure it’ll make sense when reading, and don’t want to miss out on any big moments from the series. :)
you mentioned about the publication order and i researched it and the two i don’t have are the two ones that were published after! so i presume that means if i read them in the order that i have they would still make sense- but do you think i should read them anyway as the 4th and 6th books?
i’ve realised i probably should have watched your video before commenting🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ haha i’ve been running around commenting on different videos trying to find the answer them watching the video after i’ve commented- whoops! would still love your opinion though if you see this!
Haha, I'm glad my video could help somewhat! That is very odd that they would sell them without books 4 and 6. I think it's totally fine to read what you've got without books 4 and 6 as that is how the original audience would have read them. Especially with book 4, there is a nice momentum that it kind of interrupts between books 3 and 5. Book 6 might be more important to read though as it introduces Anne's children and is helpful for approaching books 7 and 8. That being said, I don't think you NEED to read it first though. 😊
Meghan the Story Girl thank you so much! i think i’m going to order book 6 separately but leave book 4, as many people have said that they stopped reading the series at book 4 cause they couldn’t get through it. Your video was really helpful and thank you for replying!! :))
Anne of windy Poplars is the only Anne book I haven't read completely or reread . I wish L. M. Montgomery had written Gilbert's replies to Anne, I feel like it would have been much more interesting then.
I agree! Gilbert's replies would have made Anne of Windy Poplars much better. I consider it the weakest of the series but with that change it would have been really good. It would have been nice to see more about what was going on in his life too.
So I'm prepering similiar video and (spoiler) My 8th and 1st place is same. I freakin love the 1st book. Read it like 17 times, might be my favourite book of all time

I would go with Anne of Avonlea since it comes before Anne of the Island in the series order and in when LM Montgomery wrote it ❤
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 Sooo... I'm currently reading Anne of the island but in portuguese, I'm still not sure which one to buy in english 😅
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 I'm thinking of finish reading them all and choose my favorite to read in english:)
For now, my favorite is Anne of Avonlea😊
That's a great idea!
Hi. I'm from Brazil and i love Lucy Maud and Anne's series. Love your video.
Oh thanks! So glad to hear that you love Lucy Maud and Anne.
Since you said the Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside is a good story, it makes me want to buy the book and read about them so much, thank you 🥰🥰
@@akarn2158 Yay, glad it was helpful! I love owning them 😊
Does Anne become more likeable and relatable as she matures into an adult?
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 thank you! I think I will continue reading the AGG series. :)
@@yellowRose806 Great!
@@yellowRose806 I love Anne of Green Gables
I love anne of the island too!I got upset when I read anne of green gables(although it's my second favourite book) and anne of avonlea as anne never truly had confessed her feeling s for Gilbert. However, in anne of the island they end up together so I guess that's why I love it so much.
Btw your channel's great😊
I dont know if I'm gonna be able to read book 4(Anne's house of dreams) straight after reading anne of the island as I dont have the forth book.Would you advice me to still read anne of windy poplars right after reading Anne of the island?
I'm so glad you love Anne of the Island! If you don't have a copy of Anne of Windy Poplars I think it totally makes sense to go straight to book 5, Anne's House of Dreams. Anne of Windy Poplars wasn't published until later so that's actually how the original readers were meant to read them!
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 thank you so much for replying!I think I might end up reading Anne's house of dreams now because I'm scared I'll stop reading the rest if I read anne of windy poplars. Thanks for your advice😊
@@sweetprincess2019 No problem! It was my pleasure 😊
What book should I read after Anne's house of dreams?
@@sweetprincess2019 The next book in the series is Anne of Ingleside, then Rainbow Valley and then Rilla of Ingleside. I especially love Rilla of Ingleside! LM Montgomery also has a beautiful stand alone novel called The Blue Castle which I love!
Rilla of Ingleside is one of my favorite books, not just in the series, but as a whole. All of the books are amazing though!
Another Megan! Yes, Rilla definitely is in my top books of all time too!
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 Great minds think alike and so do great Megs lol
So exactly what order should I be reading the Anne of Green Gables books?
@@lvb48272 Oh, I'm so glad. I hope you enjoy them!
Read it like 17 times, might be my favourite book of all time
That's awesome! It is SUCH a good book. I was checking out your channel, but unfortunately I only speak English. Do you have any English language videos?
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 oh, sorry I don't. I'm to scared to record in English

Can I borrow your bookssss? :((
Hi Meghan, I've just found your channel and subscribed. 🥰 I think we're kindred spirits!! I'd love to know about your Rilla of Ingleside stage adaptation. I'm a redhead freelance actress/writer/composer in the UK. I've created and produced my own Anne of Green Gables adaptation - a play with music stage show. I longed to play Anne for many years and I was passionate about creating a faithful adaptation. The trailer is on my UA-cam channel.
Ooh, that sounds awesome! We definitely sound like kindred spirits! Creating my own version of Rilla came out of my desire to see a stage adaptation produced, and of course, I wanted to play her as well! I was so grateful to play Anne as well, and I'm really glad you took the bull by the horns by creating your own version and playing her too. I'll check out your channel!
@@meghanthestorygirl4581 wonderful, I'm so glad to find your channel! I bet your Rilla adaptation was amazing - you clearly have a lot of knowledge and passion. I'd love to have seen it. The best adaptations come from people who truly care about the original book. I look forward to watching more videos on your channel!
