The measuring cup illustration was genius. I’m a beginner and I tend to panic and breathe uncontrollably. Thank u for this clip. It was truly helpful .
I can only accompany others who mentioned that your cup analogy is brilliant! What you are actually doing in videos, is explaining things which for a casual swimmer are a second nature, but for amateurs - undiscovered darkness. Your videos are AMAZINGLY EASY to grasp - thanks a lot for that :)
Thank you for this. I'm really looking forward to practicing my breathing when I do my swim workout tomorrow. I'm pretty much a start over swimmer at the age of 49 so I feel like I'm starting from scratch. Your videos really make things realistic and simple for me to understand. Thanks!
Best breathing while swimming video ever! You, alone, with your UA-cam videos, are teaching me how to lap swim at age 60!! You're awesome, and funny, and have taught me soooo much!! Many, many thanks!
Hello, Justin. I'm Raúl, from Argentina. I have been struggling for months with difficulty to breathing well in freestyle: But following the excellent tips of your videos, I have achieved quick and perceptible improvements. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Excellent UA-cam channel.
1. inhale certain amount of air every time 2. no sporadic breathing 3. blow consistent bubbles out of mouth and nose 4. exhale c02 fully before quickly refilling with o2 5. 6.
I was practicing at the pool and I know I'm one who doesn't pay attention to my breathing because I tried breathing under water today. I was focusing on my stroke as I came up I exhaled and when I went down I tried to breath. It was a frightening experience but my body's survival instinct kicked in and blocked the water from going to far. I'm no rookie in the water but I've never bothered looking for techniques and helpful videos. Anyways love the content.
Thank you so much! Your videos are very helpful. I am 22 and for as long as I can remember I have always been afraid of the water and the weightless feeling but last weekend I finally was able to let go and I am happy to say I can finally swim!! Breathing was something I was struggling a lot with as I am not able to swim without holding my nose with one hand but your videos are so clear and I look forward to my next pool day so I can practice breathing :)
I am currently learning to swim I have never known anything to be so difficult to learn how to breath And blowing bubbles whilst swimming. I started having swimming lessons 5 months ago And the breathing aspect in water is taking along Time to grasp.
I lost it at 06:44 :'D Also, I tend to struggle with releasing the air controlled while I'm moving around doing the actual swimming... How do I practise that?
Hello....im a beginner also, and Im struggling with my breathing (including scared and panic mode)....you really explained it well.I will try and try your tips.thank you
Again, the best explanation I have ever seen. Is it possible to present this same photography in sea water, where waves are an obstacle to breathing, especially inhalation?
How do you get enough air in such a short amount of time? Just practice and your body adapts? I feel like I breath in less and less air as I swim. Thanks!
This is actually due to a lack of practice. As you practice harder and more efficiently you will start to feel less breathless. I recommend trying to have a breathing pattern. For example breathing every three strokes.
@@nicolajslvsten4978 not related to fitness...I run half marathons and struggle w/ breathing patterns in freestyle while the guy in the next lane is 50 lbs overweight and swims continuously without stopping ---he couldn't even run 1/4th a mile if you asked him to.
Thank you once again.... I’m new to swimming and I enjoy the sport.... I would like to become better but I would struggle with my breathing... thanks again :)
You are excellent teacher I am 65 years old Just started learning swimming My problem is can’t breathe easily I have one artificial tooth not fixed I always have a fear of swallowing it with water while taking breath. Please advise
Very useful information and a good use of the cup, because it makes unexperienced swimmers (like me) easier to see and understand what experienced swimmers do
Love the videos! Can you please make a video explaining how to make a turn while swimming. Whenever I try to make a turn a lot of water goes up my nose. Advice/tips please.
Hi Sir Justin, question regarding exhale/ inhale. Do you start blowing/ exhaling while going in the water? or do you hold breath while going in the water and only start blowing/ exhaling once you're in the water? When going out of the water to inhale, do you start going out of the water while exhaling your last few breaths? or do you exhale all your air while in water and hold while going out the water then inhale?
Its crazy...all my propulsion problems ended and I started to feel my gliding forward once I fixed my breathing..I imagined it should be s mechanical problem with the pulling or the kicking but surprise! Its the breathing...I don't know how and why but it is..
H Justin, I like your videos as you kind of explain about what exactly I am having trouble with. In this video you are breathing out by your nose. what if I breath out by mouth, do you think its okay? my nose usually keeps blocked for sinusitis. So, thats why I prefer exhaling by mouth instead of nose.
Justin: You're good at basketball, you're good at hockey, you're good at golf. Whatever. What do all of these activities have in common? Me: Ball!! They all have a ball!! Justin: They all take part on dry land! Me: oh... yes that too.
nonoo rashid yes I would just go often and pretended like it was my room and I messed around in it went down touched the floor and stuff and realized it isn’t bad at all .... don’t be afraid it’s actually quite fun
nonoo rashid yes I would just go often and pretended like it was my room and I messed around in it went down touched the floor and stuff and realized it isn’t bad at all .... don’t be afraid it’s actually quite fun
Hi Justin, I would really like ur help. It's just that I've been having a hard time bringing my head up to get air when side breathing. I turn my head but I'm still under water and breathe in water and I know I'm not supposed to poke my head out of the water. So how does ur head come out of the water while swimming just when u turn. Is it that I'm not turning enough? Am I supposed to turn my whole body? Ive done all the breathing exercises but am stuck here. Please help thanks.
Hi Justin. Do you ever teach asthmatics? I find that I can control the exhale the first couple of times, but I feel like I don't have enough time to take in that much air and end up keeping my head out of the water for too long. Then it all gets up my nose!
Hi, Great video as usual very helpful thank you! Could you possibly do a video showing how to dive under the water (while already in the water) as I always struggle with this. My arms will get under OK but my legs are stay on the surface! Thanks.
Michel Rosenthaler when ur face is in the water u have to exhale all the air before lifting your face from the water. If you exhale when ur face is out of the water u wont have much time to inhale
When u say three arms, does it mean three arms each ? Noticed u exhaling through your nose & mouth inside water. I inhale thru my mouth but exhale through my nose. Does this have any affect on my performance ?
Sharon Smith nope. Do whatever you actually prefer. Most Olympians (michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte e.t.c) Inhale with their mouth and exhale with their nose
You should always inhale through your mouth and exhale though your nose. This will help you during other strokes as well as to keep water from splashing into your nose.
Oh yes that’s me the sporadic breather 😂I can breathe in the controlled manner when I’m practicing in the pool but as soon as I start swimming I’d be breathing like your newbie examples. Not easy 😮
Wanderson Santana it's best if u keep the same stroke count after each 25 or 50 yards/meters. It's good to keep a breathing pattern going throughout your workout
Breathing like this during a marathon would cause one to hyperventilate, which is why it’s so hard to force this during swimming. This may be the best way to breath swimming but there is nothing natural about this
It's different for different styles of swimming, different breathing/stroke patterns, etc. The point of this video is 1) once you have a stroke rhythm, 2) follow with breathing pattern, which 3) will help you focus on the precise amount of air to inhale/exhale--it comes with time and practice
The measuring cup illustration was genius. I’m a beginner and I tend to panic and breathe uncontrollably. Thank u for this clip. It was truly helpful .
Very good explanation on measuring precise breathing … helpful 100
Ur cool explanation is great! Kudos 2 u

Fantastic instructor Justin with the cup analogy.!! Now I can fullly understand it👍.
This is a genius example for all of us beginners :) Thanks for posting :)
I think this video was talking to me. I feel like I'm having a cardiac arrest trying to breathe.
I applied this and it worked on the first trial! Thank you so much. Will keep practicing 😊
cool :)
1. inhale certain amount of air every time
2. no sporadic breathing
3. blow consistent bubbles out of mouth and nose
4. exhale c02 fully before quickly refilling with o2

By far, the best video on breathing technique. Its like a eureka moment for me
Amazing video... As a newbie I can condor that the cup demonstration is correct. Will try to remember tomorrow at my swimming classes

Thank you so much!!
Do you have any dry land exercises you can recommend? I would love to practice but I live so far from a pool :(
I really feel like I need to go back to the beginning and learn how to breath when they already have been having me do the freestyle
This was an amazing lesson
How can I stop exhaling too quickly?
You are great teacher!
A very good explanation..,👌
Thanks :)
6:45 FUNNYYYYYYY!!!! demonstration of new swimmer hyperventilating
The most useful video to understand about breathing. And you are super funny. Thanks a lot 😍

Hi. I like your way teaching. Do y breath out threw the nose only or both and mouth? Thank you
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

8:56 you actually look hilarious doing that 😂 the way you pause momentarily 👏
Brilliant good Advice thanks thanks🙏🙏👍
Good video !!
thanks

Muneeb Qureshi Try exhaling through your nose, slowly. Keep it under control.
Practice blowing bubbles then do that while doing the turn
AWESOME explaination with mug and lungs pattern
u are the best thank u alot

Very well explained thanks 👍🏻
Nicely explained. .....now understood the concept of breathing. .....
Also, my swimming coach tells me to never fully exhale, that seems inconsistent with your advice to empty the tank.
I kind of understand this now, thanks.

good luck ;)

I swim with bresstrock, breathing freestyle is difficult, this method is good but not enough breathing freestyle
Yes! My breathing is very sporadic!
Wow
I really appreciate your idea U
Lovely analogy about breathing and baking.lol
awesome!
Does this only apply to freestyle or does it apply to all strokes?
All strokes except backstroke
When you lift your face from the water are you still breathing out or have you stopped already?
Michel Rosenthaler when ur face is in the water u have to exhale all the air before lifting your face from the water. If you exhale when ur face is out of the water u wont have much time to inhale
cup demonstration😂😂😂😂

Dude you are funny as hell great coach I'm struggling with treading in deep water. Long story when I was a child.
Should you be breathing through your nose?

When I get tired, will I decrease the strokes/breathe Or keep trying to swim always with the same amount of strokes? I always do four strokes/breathe.
Wanderson Santana it's best if u keep the same stroke count after each 25 or 50 yards/meters. It's good to keep a breathing pattern going throughout your workout
You are the best ❤thank you
Justin are you a professional swimmer, a Olympic swimmer?

Idk but while u recording u swimming i hear ur breathing like a motor 😂
In many videos I’ve seen coaches advising to take small breath and breath for every 2 strokes.. I’m confused

Ok but like when I empty my lungs I just sink? So I feel like I need to get up for air when my lungs are at least 30% full of air?
You can breathe out the last bit in a quick burst as you go for the next inhale
You are a very good actor too.😅😂😂
I was just going say you’re exhaling thru your nose and mouth is that better than just nose
I’m getting winded just using my nose.
nose or both it's up to you
