    There are soooooo many videos coming these days of classical musicians covering metal songs. I told my parents in the 80s that heavy metal is just really hard and intense classical music. They laughed. Who's laughing now??

      It's not classical music at all. Metal is descended from 12 bar blues. You might not hear it, but that is what it is based from and descended from.
      Metallica, especially when Cliff was alive, had a lot of odd influences to include prog rock and Bach that crept in...
      Metal, especially thrash requires a high level, sometimes virtuosic levels, of musical skill and ability. It translates well over to "classical" instruments because there's a lot of "meat" on the bone musically. It's rhythmically strong and it's riff based which means it's easily identifiable on another instrument. Melodically, especially in the solos, it's a lot of minor pentatonic with sprinklings of phrygian and lydian modes and what is sometimes called the Hungarian Minor Scale or "the Metallica scale."
      There is a lot of "stuff" going on in classical, which covers from the 1600's through today. There is a lot of congruence in certain places, but metal isn't classical music. Metal, like great classical pieces, does evoke strong emotions. As much as I like Metallica... I am an enormous fan boi... and think this is a great cover too, it's not the same as Bach's "Come Sweet Death," Mozart's "Requiem," or Shostakovich's 7th Symphony. Those are some of the most "metal" classical pieces I can think of off the top of my head.

      NO, classical music is just soft sounding heavy metal music without distortion.

      @@anthonyzbikowski529 While that is true, to an extent, Cliff actually studied classical music in his years of going to university. He had a significantly better understanding of music than all the other band members when he joined. He was a prodigy, having written and played very complex songs on bass at only the age of 14, no less. ( Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) ).
      He was also a cultured person. Some of their songs on RTL, MOP, AJFA were based on books based on real events and otherwise fiction (The Thing That Should Not Be, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Call Of Ktulu, Orion etc.) His knowledge of classical music is best proven in their instrumental "Orion". The song in its entirety has multiple sides to it. If played true to the score, on classical instruments, the first part sounds like a marching song for armies. The second bit is a soothing, relaxing piece with a waltz tempo on its second half. The final piece is a combination of the other 2 bits prior, with a pleasant buildup using the soothing instruments from the second half, then making a full circle and ending in the same manner that the first bit started.
      His good knowledge music theory was attested in the songs that he contributed to greatly. (same pieces that I mentioned before hand, when I talked about some of their songs on RTL, MOP and AJFA. His good knowledge of knowing how to practice music was also proven in the same songs, but the best example of all is Orion. His bass solo is played so fast, yet so fluently, his fingerstyle playing is faster and better than a good guitarist's alternate picking. Now achieving that, no less in the mid 80s is a big deal. Because it was a first sight for everyone. What's a shame is that he was taken away from us at a heart breaking young age. We were only able to see the tip of the iceberg.
      The point that I am trying to make, is that Metallica can undoubtedly be compared and assimilated to classical music (with the right examples). That changed after Cliff's passing. The closest they got to a classical vibe after his death was with "To Live Is To Die" Which is just an unfinished project of Cliff's....
      EDIT: Forgot to add the source for Orion, orchestra version: ua-cam.com/video/YeU3mNwbLq4/v-deo.html
      Please give it a listen, whether you read my statements from above or not.

    Believe it or not out of all the musical styles Heavy Metal is the one that's the closest relative to Classical. You actually don't have to do a whole lot of work to convert one style to the other. With Metallica it's especially evident due to Cliff Burton's contributions. I recently read an interview where James was talking about how much Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring inspired them in there younger years. It makes allot of sense when you consider how often they use the Locrean Mode.

    • @davehshs651
      @davehshs651 8 років тому +10

      +Michael Justice I would just add one adjective to your comment: Heavy metal is the one that's the closest relative to *20th-century* classical. (Composers from Bach to Tchaikovsky would be horrified.)

    • @michaeljustice124
      @michaeljustice124 8 років тому +6

      That attitude is exactly the reason why so many of us walk away from our classical training.

    • @davehshs651
      @davehshs651 8 років тому +4

      Michael Justice I understand the desire to create something new and different. That's the essence of the creative impulse.
      But if the only way you can create something new is with discord and distortion, you've taken the least-creative easy way out.
      There's a reason heavy metal is mostly popular with adolescents. It's harsh, jangled energy matches the inner conflict so many teens face in our current reality.Society would be doomed if a substantial number of them didn't grow out of it.
      There really is a parallel between music and emotional states. A relatively peaceful person won't be overly attracted to heavy metal, regardless of his musical sophistication.

    • @michaeljustice124
      @michaeljustice124 8 років тому +12

      The very same elements you describe as being found in Heavy Metal can be found in many Classical pieces. The last Metal concert I went to had more people over the age of 40 than under. Society would be doomed if adolescents didn't grow out of Heavy Metal? That's an ignorant statement. Ever been to Europe?

    • @davehshs651
      @davehshs651 8 років тому +3

      Michael Justice I didn't say all adolescents grew out of it.
      To some extent, harsh, discordant music is symptomatic of the dysfunctional, discordant state of Western society.
