  • The year is 1793, Louis XVI has just been executed. France is devastated by its civil war and is now threatened by the 1st Coalition. Paranoia and terror, oh, terror grips the country by its throat as the people ask for more and more purges. As a result, almost 17,000 are executed in just over a year. France now lives under the tyranny of the Committee of Public Safety, with at its head, Maximilien Robespierre.

    First of all, just one quick note about Prairial’s law. If it was Robespierre who wrote it, it was not he who used it and yet the executions have never been so numerous. It was therefore the General Security Committee, and headed by Vadier, who did not support Robespierre, who organized these executions. In fact, Robespierre was absent from the Committee and the Convention for long weeks and Vadier (who dealt with the police) took the opportunity to multiply the death sentences and thus make Robespierre (who was seen as the head of the government) the sole perpetrator of his crimes. For example, Cécile Renault, who attempted to kill Robespierre, was sentenced to death but Vadier added his family and relatives to make Robespierre a monster. This is how Robespierre lost the support of the people and he will denounce the use of Prairial's law in his speech on 8 Thermidor.
    Now, whoaw! What an episode that is representative of all the work you have done. That's right, well explained, you even manage to talk about useful details that are not always highlighted which proves that you really make the effort to offer something of quality? If the background is really very good, almost perfect because you can say the essentials, without forgetting the necessary things that make us understand the complexity of the Revolution and Robespierre, the background is also to be highlighted because it is dynamic, aesthetic, without going in all directions, I find that the image and the transitions are of high quality. Really, I admire what you did. You didn’t fall into the trap of demonizing or spoiling Robespierre which gives a fair picture of the character. I watched a lot of video on this subject that disappointed me and your series on Robespierre that I apprehended at the start is revealed to be the best series on Robespierre that I know and I ended this final episode with great admiration , with the desire to see the series from the beginning.
    Congratulations again and I was waiting for this series on my favorite historical character to be finished before subscribing and discovering all your work and what you will propose thereafter. You can be really proud of yourself.

      Kévin, thank you very much for these words. They mean a lot to me, like really. I'm not a professional historian, by far, and really made this channel to learn about the history of my country so hearing this is very flattering. Of course I've made mistakes, especially at first which is why, I presume, you were apprehensive at first, so I'm glad to see I eventually tackled the subject well and without being (too) biased.
      Thank you for following along and for providing your insights and your clarification/corrections, while always remaining polite and kind. When it comes to a character like Robespierre, I know people can easily get emotional.
      Despite the end of this series, I hope you stay along and enjoy my future videos. Merde!

Maybe a little history lesson on Toussaint L’ouverture (on how he played a major role in Haiti’s independence despite being captured by General Leclerc, and dying in Fort Joux, France in 1802 before even seeing an independent Haiti) can be a cool Segway into Napoleon’s hay-day and the “Napoleonic wars”. My dear Barris: as always I love your work. That said, like you I share your admiration and compassion for the torment of Robespierre. There is one particularly disturbing side of him that emerges in his involvement with the trial and death not of Louis but of Marie Antoinette. The women of the revolution were so disturbed by her justified indignation and pleas that even Robespierre could not seem to find the words to silence them. His way of silencing and disabling opposition be it defendants (denied representation) or in this case the women - shut out of the discussion (what else is new?) that suggests for such a gifted man he could not tolerate a real challenge to his intellectual power. This may have been the fatal weakness. Or am I incorrect? And what about French misogyny? Generally in Europe and the US/Canada/Meico it is the weak men women have to worry about. From the 18th century onwards there is a shift and by the time of the great Revolution and later Napoleon French men I find myself wondering about the erstwhile lovely concept of Gallanterie.....a video on the misogyny problem would be of great interest even if we disagree! Thank you: Gabrielle

    I'm French and I'm wondering about your version of robespierre, I know it's stereotypical but you're used to making a legendary story in suetonian fashion. I'm just asking you a simple question, do you know Jean Clément Martin, the myth of a monster. Robespierre is a complex figure who is interpreted in different ways, I am interested in yours version.
    Sorry for my bad english...

    • @ThisisBarris
      @ThisisBarris  4 роки тому +3

      I definitely agree that Robespierre is a complex character and I think that portraying him as entirely evil is wrong just like portraying him as a savior/hero is. I also think portraying him as the sole person behind the reign of terror is very wrong (for example, there's Barère, Couthon, Saint-Just, etc.).
      I intend on making a video where I discuss that and discuss how Robespierre's involvement in the reign of terror was later accentuated and further demonized.
      Thanks for watching and merde!

    "It has been said that terror was the mainspring of despotic government. Does your government, then, resemble a despotism? Yes, as the sword which glitters in the hands of liberty's heroes resembles the one with which tyranny's lackeys are armed. Let the despot govern his brutalized subjects by terror; he is right to do this, as a despot. Subdue liberty's enemies by terror, and you will be right, as founders of the Republic. The government of the revolution is the despotism of liberty against tyranny. Is force made only to protect crime? And is it not to strike the heads of the proud that lightning is destined? To punish the oppressors of humanity is clemency; to pardon them is barbarity. The rigor of tyrants has only rigor for a principle; the rigor of the republican government comes from charity."
