  • We are in 1830. The Bourbon Dynasty has been restored and France is on the brink of yet another revolution. The King of France knows his people are angry but in no way quells his efforts to increase absolutism. Instead, he has a plan to distract them. This is the story of the French Conquest of Algeria. #ProjectAfrica

    Thank you for watching everyone. Please make sure to check out the rest of the #ProjectAfrica playlist and to share it with friends and family because Africa's history is fascinating and seriously underrated. Also, my UA-cam Historian friends put a lot of effort into these videos so they truly deserve it. Merde to all of you!
    EDIT: While the use of the term "Barbary Pirates" is not necessarily accurate, since they were mostly corsairs, I still used that term because it's what they are most commonly known and mostly, it's how they were perceived by French people back then - foreign pirates that were enslaving Christians. The point of that segment wasn't so much to talk about the history of Barbary Corsairs but explain the justifications France used to invade Algeria.

    My family has a alot of military and historical background but I will talk about the independence:
    My grandfather was freedome fighter, his job was to find strategic information about the French in Oran. In one of his missions he was shot in his neck but actually recovered and still fought for freedom.
    At the time that Algeria took independence, my grandfather thought it was a trick from the French to find the freedom fighters and kill them, so he burned all his documents.
    He sadly passed in 2014 away but will be remembered.

      Without the colonisation of Algeria, this place would've become a lawless and irrelevant barbary state after the fall of the Ottomans, eventually absorbed by the superior morrocon state.

    I like the Europeans when they tell history according to what suits their mood. The main reason for France's attack on Algeria was Britain's destruction of the Algerian flotilla in the Battle of Navarre. Algeria remained without protection. The second thing is that Barbary piracy ended after Dey Hussein came to power, the same person who helped France financially. Barbary pirates were a reaction to 47 campaigns Crusade carried out by the Europeans against Algeria

    Fantastic video my friend. The tale of the Barbary pirates is certainly interesting. One of the reasons that they were not dealt with prior to the 19th century, was because the piracy thrived on the competition among European powers. France encouraged them against Spain, and later Britain and the Dutch supported them against France. For this reason, even when a nation had naval dominance in the Mediterranean, strict cession of the activity was never enforced. Post the Napoleonic wars, the need of such a thing from the European powers went away. So, the usefulness of these pirates became non-existent.

    This documentary represents only a small fragment of Algeria's complex and rich history. It is crucial to understand that even the most vulnerable individuals-such as shepherds, women, and children-were subjected to horrific torture during the struggle for independence. What is even more shocking is that this people endured unimaginable suffering and humiliation. Despite these atrocities, the Algerian people displayed remarkable courage and dignity in their fight for freedom. To fully grasp the depth of their struggle and resilience, it is essential to visit historical sites and monuments dedicated to the martyrs, such as the Martyrs' Memorial in Algiers. These places, like the Casbah, are filled with emotion and offer a deeper understanding of the magnitude of their history and heritage.

    The French pirates are less well-known than some of their European counterparts but they enslaved a fair number of Amazighs and Arabs so that reason given by Chuckie X is questionable. That the French government refused to repay a debt to Algiers that was incurred under Napolean is ironic as that is the same reason the US refused to repay their debt stemming from the War of Independence to the Republic as it was incurred while Louis was still on the throne of France.

    Dear God!!! The Dey struck the French diplomat with his fly whip? This means war. One person was hit with a fly whip so we must declare war. The French often went to war over pride. The Franco Prussian war was because a French diplomat felt insulted. It’s gotta be hard losing a war you only fought over a insult.

    it was a brutal conquest mainly due to the fact that the turks were not the real leaders of the country, they simply had the coasts, while the cities and the mainland payed them tribute without fully being under their control. the local population was governed by a system of local religious schools called the Zaouias. this is why the french faced resistance as taking out the Turks meant nothing in the eyes of the locals. perhaps if the french decided to implement the same system the Turks had, it wouldn't have taken long nor needed that amount of violence.
    great video, subbed!

    • @ThisisBarris
      @ThisisBarris  4 роки тому +2

      You're absolute right. The long, grinding guerrilla warfare that ensued was the main cause of the brutality of the war, and frankly, it felt all rather pointless because other than the coasts, I cannot imagine Algeria offering much more to France, no? It all felt like a "pride contest" of who held the most land.

    Nice synopsis - would have been more balanced if you included the fact that the majority of the "Barbary" pirates were European, e.g. the raid on Iceland was under the command of Jan Jansen van Haarlem, aka Murad Reis. Any idea on the number of Arab, Amazigh, and Moorish slaves sold in Europe that were taken from North Africa? I think the true numbers are roughly equal - Marseilles and Livorno were the two biggest slave markets in Europe but most coastal cities had them.

    • @ThisisBarris
      @ThisisBarris  3 роки тому +4

      I didn't know that Reis Mourad the Younger was Dutch, so you learn everyday. Thanks for sharing. However, this video really wasn't about the barbary pirates/corsairs, it was just an overview/introduction used to explain the justification France used to invade Algeria. I'm glad you enjoyed the video nevertheless. Merde!

    Hard to fathom today how the French (and British) would go into someone else's country, plant their flag and announce they were taking over. Those who could not accept the new status quo as slaves to their European masters were dealt with in the most brutal manner possible.

    • @gostavoadolfos2023

      The same way Turks planted their flag on Algeria in fact France abolished slavery in Algeria while Spain didn't interven in the matters of local Arabs in the Spanish Sahara which let the slavery practice and the castration of men continue till the 70ties of the last century.

    Salut l'ami, je ne découvre ta chaîne et je suis agréablement surpris de la qualité de cette dernière, en général les gens évoquant cette période se trompe souvent souvent sur le titre de l'Algérie à cette époque ou sur les bonnes dates de la conquête algérienne par la France, mais ici non seul précision, tu dis que les régences d'Alger, le beys de Tunis et la régence de Tripoli sont indépendantes hormis pour le nom sauf que pour la régence d'Alger, dès 1567, nous avons des traces que ce dernier se faisait appeler royaume d'Alger et non plus régence, donc la différence se faisait aussi sur le nom et bien sûr le reste mais ça tu l'as déjà souligné.
