  • I have edited and re-cut the "Has anybody seen Billy?" scene from season 3 of "Twin Peaks," A Limited Event Series. Per a new interview in Blue Rose Magazine with editor Duwayne Dunham:
Courtenay Stallings: What about the diner scene where this character runs into the diner and shouts "Where's Billy?" and it seems to have this jump where extras are in different seats.
Duwayne Dunham: No, it's just, the diner. It's just one of those things you do in movie making. You take whatever footage happened to be shot in the diner and you use it. It could be made up from two or three different diner scenes. That's why those people are moving all around. Where does he run in, and in which diner scene does he do that? You know, if it was here and it was a little over there and it wound up over there. It's just one of those things.
Per this information, I have attempted to reconstruct and assemble the pieces of the sequence in the correct narrative order. The reaction shot of Norma looking up at the door is an outtake repurposed from the scene in Part 5 in which Becky enters the Double R Diner. I have moved the segment of Bing coming to the door and asking if anybody has seen Billy to the end of the sequence. Based on the placement and movement of Shelly, Heidi, and the extras, I believe this to be the intended order of the sequence.
In my video, between the first few moments and the first editing cut, from Shelly serving the male customer in the brown sweater to "Starring Kyle MacLachlan," there is some missing footage in between. Notice Heidi has walked from one side of the diner to the other, despite us not having seen her do so, but is still holding the coffee decanter and menus under her left arm. Most of the extras remain in the same positions they were in before the cut. There is a couple in the back center of the frame visible before the cut that seem to have left the diner by the time Heidi has crossed to the other side of the room. By the end of the first sequence, Bing and a girl have gotten up to pay their bill and leave the diner. Also, take note of an older woman and her friend in a booth on the right side of the frame, and a young couple, one of whom is an Asian woman, sitting at the end of the bar near the front door in the center of the frame.
I am unsure if the second segment that follows should be viewed as an entirely separate scene. Heidi goes back inside of the counter area on the left side of the frame. There is a young man who comes in and sits down in a booth on the right side of the frame. Then, there is a second cut with more missing footage. After the second cut, the three male extras sitting at the bar on left side of the frame are still there. The men in the booth on the right are gone and seem to have left their drinks behind. The young man who had just come in is now also gone. Near the door, the older woman and her friend and the young couple, all previously mentioned, are getting ready to pay their bills and leave. The man in the brown sweater that Shelly was serving in the first few frames of this video is also getting ready to pay his bill and leave.
It is likely that David Lynch kept the cameras rolling continuously during filming of this sequence and we are missing minutes of footage in between this second cut, in which the young man got up and left, as did the two men in the booth on the right side. Or - it is an entirely separate scene that is semi-continuous with the placement of the extras because it takes place “later that night” on the same story day in the script (per everyone's hair and makeup).
Then, Bing, who had previously gotten up to leave, comes running back in, asking "Has anybody seen Billy?" before running out again. This concludes what would have been one long scene; or the second of two Double R Diner scenes in the sequence, before being whittled down and combined in editing.
I believe the sequence was recut for two simple editing reasons:
    1) To include Peggy Lipton's footage from Part 5. There were probably limited reaction takes from the Part 5 scene that could be used here, so in order to use it, Norma had to be near the beginning of the sequence, as it would've been awkward to not show her sitting there doing the books for minutes on end and then see her for the first time reacting to Bing coming to the door at the very end of a long scene.
    2) They wanted to use the atmosphere of the Double R Diner to end the episode. That meant moving the Bing segment earlier on so the scene could effectively narratively end there and have the dialogue conclude before the credits began. They used the other diner footage as "B-roll" under the end credits. It was again then less awkward to not show Norma again, as the camera stayed in a wide shot on a busy night at the Double R as the episode came to a close.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments! I hope this video was helpful. :)

@@Drew-vn8rx Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback :) I just wish I knew if it was truly shot as two scenes or just one long scene that we only saw a portion of the filmed footage for.

I love this re-cut and Duwayne Dunham's response for three reasons: 1) it helps to demystify David Lynch. He's a great storyteller and filmmaker, but he's also not perfect. He has to work with limitations, and get the best out of it. 2) I think that re-cut and response prove the interpretation of the changed time-line to be wrong. 3) There's a small hype on UA-cam surrounding the 4 1/2 hour "ultimate" interpretation of Twin Peaks by Twin Perfect, and I do believe that his interpretation is pretty interesting, but doesn't hold up to scrutiny. The diner scene seems to me symptomatic for The Return, which seems to invite wild and far-fetched interpreting more than the first two series and the movie.

Nah, this wasn't just a coincidence of editing. You can literally see Shelly reacting to the sudden change of people in the diner. Look at her. SHE NOTICES. It's intentional. Also listen to the subtle Windom Earle theme in the background, building looming dread

I just realized a couple days ago that Heidi's laugh is shared by other Germans, lol. All these years and I thought she just had a weird laugh!!

There's no possible way all the background extras changing is some sort of accident. I've worked on set, I've worked in editing, I even work as a background actor. It would take a huge effort to coordinate that on all fronts.

The jumbled cuts points to the two different versions, official & unofficial. Another thing that points to this is the ominous music track that plays underneath the country tune in the later part of the video.

This was a great edit and explanation, very cool to see. However, it doesn't matter what Duwayne Dunham said. As if he was even allowed to answer questions about the show with any real truth. The fact is this scene was shown to us on purpose in the exact order it was shown. This was not a mistake or continuity error. This was done intentionally. Just like the scene with Ed at his shop Big Ed's Gas Farm where there is a glitch in the reflection (Part 13 ending).

And the private jet in flight with the windows glitching out. And the security guard frozen in time when they are releasing Mr. C.

you cant cut in the right order, there are people already in the first show that just show up in the second shot. none of these shot was meant to cut in order. all these scenes are same dinner but different universe. look at the guy walk in and just sit down, he is already there in the first shot, 3 men sitting by the window is change to 2 men sitting 3 booth down next scene

Check out the full video description for my explanation. There is clearly footage missing in between the cuts but the general flow of the extras makes sense based on my description.
