U2: ’Songs of Surrender’ & Reflecting on their Musical Legacy | Apple Music

- Despite having been inducted into the Hall of Fame, won multiple GRAMMYs and other international awards, U2 remains connected to their origin in the desert. Bono and The Edge, meet up with Zane Lowe in the desert outside Las Vegas to reflect on their fifteenth studio album, 'Songs Of Surrender'.
The band gives some insight into the environment that helped craft the new album and the experience listening to their catalog through the lens of the present day. They admit that the bundle they were as a result of the COVID pandemic influenced the project greatly. These circumstances, however challenging, allowed the band to experiment with new sounds and push them out of the "indie mentality".

As much as I absolutely adore and respect this band creatively and musically, the thing I’m most blown away by is that in an industry that is littered with volatile interactions, breakups, drugs, ODs, and salacious accusations/actions, the original lineup of Larry Mullen Jr, Adam Clayton, Edge, and Bono have stayed together uninterrupted for 45 years. That’s absolutely bonkers. No one in the history of rock has been able to say that. These 4 guys as a whole, and as individuals, are such a treasure.
The Rolling Stones...
@@thedrummerscorner1Not the same line-up at all from beginning to end....
@@dcullenmusic Yes, and the Stones (except for Watts) seem a bit wild and crazy. Only Charlie Watts could’ve been a member of U2 (not at all saying that I’d want him instead of my dream man LMJ - just that CW had the U2 feel).
You don't know these 4 ppl. You don't know what's happened in their personal lives. Stop thinking you do because you've been a fan.
someone touched a nerve
My buddy's RV, and he got to drive them. What a helluva cool experience.
That’s so cool
He’s our buddy too!
Wow!! So lucky
That's awesome.
Sure. Phony.
Probably one of the best interviews I've seen. I can't recall any interviewer to delve so deeply into the creative process of an artist. Well done, all around.
Agreed. I love this interviewer. Have you seen the interview he did with the entire band during their Joshua Tree 30th anniversary tour? Its fantastic.
@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 no but I'll surely look it up, thank you!
@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 He has a great way of connecting to the artist and getting them to reveal everything. I love his interview with Damon Albarn.
@@Alpha_7227 Agree 100%. He’s a good balance between being uniquely inquisitive without ever feeling like he’s crossing a boundary. It’s a fine line. He pulls it off rather well.
But he's so obsequious...
I'm 50 and have loved U2 for many many years...my daughter went to see INHALER 3 weeks ago, it's like history repeating itself again which is quite wonderful ❤️
Inhaler are excellent.. but never be a patch on U2
@@TommyFinan give Elijah time you never know...he sounds just like his dad...but admittedly there is only one U2😊😊
So far I find inhalers songwriting weak...it lacks coherent structure
Remember, they are just starting out, give them a chance. Its so crazy how I can hear Bono in Elijah's voice but he's also forging his own way@@paulharrisonadventuregearm5457
Yes❤
My god - i'm not even a massive U2 fan but these two are incredibly articulate. The intelligence and character stands out a mile. Same could be said of many people in the past ie. John Lennon and Paul McCartney....
This is definitely one of the best interviews I've ever seen.
“REVEALING is what good songs MUST do.” “Don’t bore us; get us to the chorus.” “The ENEMY of GREAT is ALMOST great.” Wow! Those insights inspire me to keep diligent working on my lyrics! Thank you!!!
At the same time, I think they have over cooked their last 2 offerings by being too precise. I wish they would just spend time and jam and what ever comes out - that's it. Like Zooropa. Wasn't that written mostly on the road. Also if you listen to the cure. What I like about them is some of their latest material have long intros, basically instrumentals before you reach even the 1st verse. It's majestic, etheral.
@@Alpha_7227 totally agree, every songs weren't a single or an anthem, but there is a weight or a feeling of mystery. Now, I think this is stadium ready, but I'm still curious about them.
❤
True Rock stars these good people!
May they all live long and strong.
Interviews with these guys always re-remind me of why I love this band. Quality discussion, looking forward to part 2.
Truly. I genuinely love this band and the people who comprise it. How lucky are WE to be alive at the same time they are?!
Im blown away by this interview. U2 were my first love, and hearing Bono and The Edge talk about songs like Bad brought back my early teen years (early 90's) sitting in my bedroom with a CD player listening to U2 albums (I had them all), surrounded by walls adorned with U2 posters.
❤
Sound exactly like my teen room was treated;-) Though a couple of years before (mid 80´s). And they are still around (U2). How amazing is that! Cheers from Denmark.
Glad we had this interview to put things in perspective. Zane is great with this kind of thing. We’re also encouraged by The Edge letting on there’s more NEW U2 music still coming.🎧
Yes❤
Solid interview. Loved that Zane didn’t stick to the script with the questions, but pushed a little deeper in the areas of creativity and process.
Zane did a good job overall but his over sincerity and over emoting during the second half of the interview gives me the "icks"... as they say.
@@davidpearson6346 He interviews everyone like this. Its the insincerity that winds me up.
TBH, I let out a little scream, when Zane said Part 2 coming soon!! Zane is the best interviewer in the biz and he LOVES himself some U2... I love getting to hear Edge's take on things more and more... U2 are humble dudes, but Zane hit on the fact- they are the hardest working band in music. They dig for Spirit. Thanks so much for this!
I WAS INVITED TO GO TO A U2 CONCERT BACK IN 1992 WHILE SERVING THE USN IN SAN DIEGO., MY ROOMMATE BACK THEN HAD TOLD ME ABOUT THE CONCERT PERFORMERS AND SINCE I WAS A BIG PUBLIC ENEMY FAN BACK THEN I DECIDED WHY NOT. U2 WAS THE HEADLINER AND EVER SINCE BEEN A HUGE U2 FAN!!!
As a 53 year old, they are as interesting and valid to me as they were at Redrocks.
Yep! I saw them in Chicago in the 1980s and they were incredible. One of the best live performances I’ve ever seen from any band and I’ve been to a lot of ragers.
Elle I'm 48 years old and the Irish lads have always been my favorite. Larry Mullen Jr is my favorite lad and I was going to go to the sphere in Vegas but now Larry is requiring surgery to replace elbows, a neck and so on.
❤
“ at the end of the journey, with the right company and some wisdom you can recover your innocence…” Beautiful🦋
Such a wonderful and deeply introspective interview. Very well done. I’ve loved this band from the beginning. 💚☘️
"Music is the language of the spirit." Truth.
I am kind of new to really loving U2. ( I’m in my thirties for reference) Always familiar with them, and even owned a couple of albums, but never my favorite band… but a couple of years ago I was in the desert with friends. Joshua Tree specifically, and we did edibles and listened to the JT and I swear to god , I have never had such a mind blowing music experience. Good edibles I guess ! Edge’s guitar was like nothing I had ever heard even though I had legit heard it 1000 times. Now I hope I get a chance to see them tour again!
It will be an amazing experience. I will hopefully be going on concert number 9.
One of the few modern bands that a whole family can enjoy and appreciate- grandparents, parents, kids and grandkids- best band in the world!
I agree with you wholeheartedly ❤❤❤❤
1987 to 2023 and beyond, still the biggest band on earth
This has been the most comfortable
interview , the Airstream the desert and genuine friendship of conversation..... Thank you gentlemen 💙🙏😊
Bono's voice is so beautiful ❤
Bono and The Edge are amazing
Thank you for this interview - first saw U2 on the unforgettable fire tour in LA. It changed the way I thought and listed to music and live concerts; not something to simply just be listened to but something to experience, learn and inspire you!!! I camp in the desert on a regular basis and find inspiration there as well. God bless U2; thank you for making the world a better place... on so many levels.
Same for me. Same tour. 03/17/1985 St. Patrick's day.. McNichols Arena.. Opening band was Red Rockers. They had a band of bagpipers start the show.
I feel your words, Larry. U2's music is inspirational, spiritual, thoughtful, thought-provoking, heartfelt and universal in its range. And yes, like all the greatest artists, like The Beatles and David Bowie, they have pushed the boundaries of music, created new musical territory, affected culture positively and yes, made the world a better place. 100%.
🌵💚 love U2 since 1985 there are simply amazing souls and their music blow me away and Bono has the most amazing voice in all the Universe 💘
Agree!!
Great interview! Love their openness to share the thought process of how they create from boys to men to distinguished gentlemen! I think they got something awesome ready for us and I'm prepared to be blown away! Love Bono, The Edge, Adam and Larry!
I’m so lucky to live in Las Vegas, U2 is my ideal band. The sphere experience just blew me away . I’m 360 days younger than Bono. My brother died on his birthday. Great interview
Thank you Zane and U2 alike for blowing us away yet again with this deeply human chat. When I listen to these interviews I don't think anyone can not relate to feeling like you are a fly on the wall to artistic aspiration and human inspiration. Simply a beautiful and magical journey.
These interviews respect the craft as much as the musicians as people. It’s very refreshing. Well done.
THIS is the BEST interview ever!!!! The setting complements/conflict with this very THOUGHTFUL discussion! Thank you, Bono, The Edge, and Zane Lowe of Apple Music!!! LAWLESS! PURE! YES! Thank you!!!
legends
Best band in the world. Period.
They stand for a reason..Just love this band called “U2”..wonderful interview!
I appreciate U2 more as the years pass by.
The most comprehensive, sincere interview of U2.
Great interview. I really want to watch the Adam and Larry version... ;)
❤
I always enjoy Zanes enthusiasm and respect for every artist he interviews.
God bless them! U2 is the reason i had the guts 34y ago to pick up a Bass guitar and change my life. I learned about every song from their Discography since the beginning, B.Sides and Studiobootlegs included. I still posses a "ONE" TShirt with Bonos and Edges Autographs from 1992s from ZooTV Tour. i'm not so much in them anymore but i still respect them for their life work. Thank you!❤
One of the last of a generation band never to be repeated!
U2 we love you from Morocco 🇲🇦 🎸💗
they are up there in age ..great band bono's voice hasnt changed neither has the band play ..excellent
Loved, Loved, Loved the book, and so happy you are all still up to creating beauty for us❣️Thanks
Fantastic interview, thank you.
Last U2 interview done by Zane Lowe was the best U2 interview for me. High expectation for me about this one!
Thank you Zane for a wonderful interview. Can't wait for part 2.
That RV is a work of art...
If I could bottle this colour palette and set design I would. It's perfect U2 in all it's Joshua Tree-ness.
Absolutely brilliant, from both interviewer and interviewees! Wonderful insights into the band and the individuals! Loving this! 👌
I’ve been a fan since I was a teenager, and this band will always have a place in my heart , there music the lyrics to each unique track it captures your soul in different beautiful moments, there isn’t a band on the planet that could achieve the sheer brilliance on Bono , Edge , Adam Clayton , Larry Mullen Jr , they have done it all ❤️👍
Such a huge influence on multiple levels
U2 we love u❤from Germany
Just when I thought that feeling was gone...that excitement of "borrowed" genius, the time bound book signed out by U2 so many times...the tattered card has been scribbled on once more. That energy is back! Uega2! Cannot wait to hear more.
Thank you for sharing!!
"The enemy of great is almost great" - The Edge
Layed in bed hung over and listened to the whole album this afternoon . So many memories come back with the music
What an amazing interview. Something music magazines and MTV should have kept on doing years ago. Thanks to a few like Apple we get stuff like this.
A band that's been around as long as U2 understandably has a part 2 🙌❤🎶
U2 = outstanding.
I enjoy these interviews, and the insight of the Band's mind set! It helps in understanding the songs, and getting the realeaning
Simply a great interview from Zane.... digging deep into the soul's of these 2 abstract musical artists....! I can't wait to see what U2 is getting ready to unleash over the next few years.
It’s so great to see one of the best rock bands be so down to earth and human. I’m certain one could sit in a pub and have a great pint and conversation with anyone of these guys.
Rock is not asleep and hasn’t gone away. Jack White has made sure of that! Love the interview!
Been waiting for this for 6 YEARS
Waiting album with old songs?
@@zagitov21 A follow up Zane interview. But, honestly, the album is gonna be great. If you don't get it after watching this, then that's your loss. They're transcending.
Almost 50 years of the band, this is how they make themselves notice again, re-imaginaning... not remaking.
What I like best about Zane's interviews with U2 is that he doesn't just go through the interview questions, but rather participates in a conversation and is not shy to express his opinions and apply his knowledge/perception to the topic at hand. Really nice to sit down and hear a conversation with the band that we all dream of doing, but are often too star struck to attempt should we be lucky enough to be in front of the artists we adore. My friend put the new record on low volume as accompaniment for our reunion after years apart on the 17th, all hearing it for the first time together, and not all of us U2 fans...it was magic.
LOVE it! thanks for sharing!!
This was wonderful. Great interview. So cool to see two incredible songwriters still working together and happy to be working together.
❤‼️ loved this. Always fresh. Always sincere. Authentic. Funny. Entertaining. ❤️ I got the “streets” - goosebumps during the end. Electric shivers. ❤️‼️
An amazing interview....one of the best
Thinking about choruses, verse-chorus-verse structure -- I've been pondering this for a long time, most of my life. Zane says "End of the World" has no chorus; I don't know what it's called, but it has a 'punctuation': every time Bono repeats "End of the World" and Edge does that guitar riff, that's what brings you back, it's the theme. Same with "In My Life" (mentioned at about 30 minutes in), there's a repetition of the theme. And, the song that really got me thinking about this 30 years ago when I was a kid, was Simon & Garfunkel's "America": though there's no chorus, every time they crescendo of "look for America!," as a listener, you know that's the key to the ongoing narrative of the song, the whole point. I think it's a cool structure. (note that these three examples of this structure are all badass songs)
Can't get enough of these guys! U2 rules the world!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
They always have to say more, if the right interviewer comes along.
This is a great interview. Many, many thanks!
Zane thank you from ALL Kiwis all over the world for representing us. I love you.
NB loving the intros you're doing too
Kiwis aren’t exactly noted rock intellectuals 😅
That was a great watch! Up there with the brilliant Damon Albarn episode a couple of weeks ago. Zane really gets the guests comfortable and asks brilliant questions. Great insights from Bono and The Edge. Looking forward to part 2
Mega Interview, Thank You for this.
I enjoyed this very much, thank you.
Yes! Why they are so hard on themselves?? They’re a great band and we want more new things from them!
Thank you for this. Down to earth. Fresh. Important. Great chat.
Honest, interesting & illuminated interview. Want to see the next part soon❤ Love U2, they are making history😊
Thank you for this interview. ❤️
Of all what's being said about this album, I simply want to say I love the album, it's beautiful and it's so relaxing for me and it's great to see Edge singing as well.
And great guitars as well, he is my guitar hero ❤
Also I'm loving Bonos deeper vocals and he can still belt his vocals as well.
I love it guys and well done Edge for great production as well !!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I just happen to be reading Bono’s book at the moment. Dude’s pretty funny 👍
Great interview in every shape or form. That is how you do it.
This was amazing, have loved this band since the early days.
What a deeply fascinating and insightful interview. Some of the quotes are absolutely first class.
Can't wait for new music, rock on .
Just Awesomeness! so much fun!!!
As a long time U2 fan, I feel sorry for those who still don't 'get it' or view them as pompous artists. If you know them well, you know better.
I was just thinking the same thing!
As a FORMER LONGTIME, LONG term fan of U2, I’ve literally just had enough of Bono, and his ALL about himself attitude, and liberal preaching of politics, when all you did was pay 💰 to see a rock concert 🎵.
Amen. Right here. Fan since 1983. I predicted on a cold winter night in 1984 they would be mega successful
U2 got some of the best lyrics out there, I really love the way Bono write the words to their music, it's very poetic and you don't always get what's it's about. And sometimes it the opposite, very laid out. Edge describes it well too, it's about the words sounding good to the melodies.
The songs are written in such a way that they can mean whatever the listener needs them to mean.

Their music and poetic lyrics are so meaningful and thought provoking! Excellent band and I'm so glad that they are still together doing what they do best! They are truly living their God given talents and purpose!! 🎶
Thank you, your music has held my hand through different periods my life, both happy and sad
Mine too, good comment!
I find myself playing "Seconds" from time to time. Still.
Thanks Guys!
So nice to hear geniuses expressing themselves about life, spirituality, soul!! Thank you.
