MY LETTER TO U2-1987
I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono!
I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage!
I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations.
Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year!

My Dad and Bono's Dad worked together as amateur musicians and I have Bono's autograph. I saw U2 around growing up in the 80''s in Dublin. We left them alone in the pub, and even got served before them at the bar! 💚

I'm amazed at how Bono is still so hard on himself. It's inspiring to see someone with a bar set so high for himself. Goes for the entire band, just Bono is very vocal about it.
He doesn't think he did good on "Do They Know it's Christmas?" and Edge doesn't think their Live Aid performance was their best.
his singing is far better now than it was in 1987. I agree with him - that he finally does the song more justice.

Best interview i've heard in a long time. I could listen to these guys all day. They're oozing creativity, and the landscapes and pictures they paint with their words and tone is beautiful. Shame we didn't hear more from Adam and Larry because they are equal to Bono and Edge. I hope the legacy of U2 lasts forever

@@mbrew3244 He does, the bass part literally never changes the whole song... I think it's a great part and somehow it being the same the whole song works, but I don't understand saying it is a "f'ing masterpiece" lol. The Edge's solo there is what I'd describe as that.

This band's music is what got me through High School I would have whatever day I had, then go home, sit in my room after dinner and listen to "Unforgettable Fire". I had/have the album, but I went through about 3 Cassette Tapes listening to it over and over. It is not one person, the 4 of them make the music, you cannot have one without the other, and I also include any band members that they have for studio albums. Years later I have realized how much they spoke about faith in their music, I love that so much. I still cannot add them to a playlist, if I am listening to U2, that is the only music I will listen to, nothing else.

With Or Without You is my all time favorite U2 song, the one that really started my journey with U2. But I think I’m one of the very few that absolutely love ❤️ Red Hill Mining Town! I love watching Bono sing that song.
I remember hearing it for the first time after having been consuming the previous material to that date, pride and bad were ring in my ears for years....I’m staring at my bedroom wall hearing that drum machine and sequenced keyboard thinking, “this is so weird” ....then the bass came in. From that point on all that track did was build, and build and stop....and then only start to build. The created denial. Live versions take you where the album refused to go after that where love will tears us apart....again.
Bono’s comments on the lyric for where the streets have no name really interest me. There’s a scene in from the sky down in which Bono says that you can’t be intellectually proud when writing/‘receiving’ a lyric and implies that you sometimes get a lyric that’s apparently beneath your best work-or at least simpler than your mind’s highest pretensions. It’s not just Bono. In Bridge Over Troubled Water, Paul Simon also wondered if he was writing too simply or below his capacity with lines like, “when you’re weary / feeling small”... yet there’s this perfection of a a divine comfort speaking directly to the soul.
Some writer’s feel that what requires too much labour and revision probably isn’t worth keeping. Others think rewriting is really what it’s all about. Then there’s this other thing that happens and you take it down as it comes... and sometimes it’s very direct and simple and comprehensible. It doesn’t advertise your capacities or depreciate them. It’s something else. It fascinates me.

Yeh it's an amazing album.
Unforgettable Fire is my favorite as well. It has a presence as a whole that none of their other albums have had. I adore their new stuff as their old, and my favorite song isn't even on UF, but UF is cohesive and immersive in a way none of their others seems to have.

Possibly the best U2 interview I've ever watched. (I'm from Dublin, not a HUGE U2 fan but I respect them and the music. 'Angel Of Harlem' is a bit of genius on every level. There are other songs of theirs which delight and excite me. They get a lot of 'flak' in Ireland because of a certain national characteristic that distrusts/resents the very successful. Those people should get over themselves. U2 as artists have moved and even re-defined live performance in the way that David Bowie did. Their idea has always been to explore, push and experiment. It's funny to see them 'just chatting' in an intimate interview setting. As ordinary as they are extraordinary. Really nice, talented and honest people. xx SF

As a teenager I bought The Joshua Tree when it was released. At the time it blew me away & it still does now. It was a fine balance of playing air guitar & ensuring the needle didn’t jump on the record player. Thank you Bono, The Edge, Adam & Larry. As we say in Australia.....this one goes straight to the pool room.
They should do a 30th anniversary of Achtung Baby tour, they should reprise the ZooTV tour setup

Yes, it's great to hear an interview from a well-spoken fan.
1. Don't capitalize every fricking word.
2. He was horrible. He talked way too much and didn't ask Larry or Adam one question.
Edge seems very taken with him in the beginning...then he starts pouring drinks.
Larry & Adam should have been featured more here. It's a missed opportunity for sure to ignore them for a majority of the interview.

A friend of mine worked at windmill lane and borrowed one of the vans to move to his new flat. It was on the night of the listening party for the completed Joshua tree album. Only they couldn't listen because the master was sitting in a box in the borrowed van ha ha. Colm O Reilly. Miss you brother.
What I find so interesting with them is that they managed to stay friends all these years later (especially Bono and Edge who were friends before being in a band together). I think the fact they split things 5 ways (20% to their manager) helped a lot since so many bands break up over money. Really though, Bono could have asked for more since he wrote all the lyrics and was made the face of the band (he's an extrovert in a band of introverts so it was inevitable) but the fact everyone recognized that the band is better than the sum of it's parts is what kept them tomorrow.
Love how edge takes a drink after Bono says Streets isn't finished to him. Also nice how Bono is looking his age finally

Being a bass player for 40 plus years with Adam Clayton being my icon for all those years, like they have always say when ask when do you feel your ready with a song? It is when you are so prepared and played it so many times that you couldn't play it wrong if you wanted to! Now you're ready for tour!!!
I absolutely love how Bono repeats We,We’re,We are …….. Most frontmen or lyricists etc always come across I…… Me Myself My band my songs When egos start to mutate that’s when the band implodes too much wealth bravado will cost you dearly ….U2 are like a family unit a band of brothers no ones bigger than anyone else they get criticised for being liberated,political,philanthropists yet 45 years have passed now and despite their status they still act like humble kids with their roots hearts and soul focused on their art.
That’s why they have incredible longevity.

I probably misunderstood Bono, but the way he sang the A-side of the album was unreachable, extraordinary. In particular, I think of Running to stand still. There are amazing versions from the past.
It's the B-side songs, as we're listening to them in these lucky days, the finally revealed masterpieces. EXIT above all: please never ever drop it in the future.

I once had a boyfriend who told me he had a dream of me on stage with Bono singing I still haven't found what I'm looking for, I think it even made him kind of jealous. Lots of people tell me, "every time I hear a U2 song I think of you Jeanna!" And im like yeah you better!!🤪 yeah I can't even imagine my life without Joshua Tree!

I feel so blessed and inspired when I get to listen to real people. These men are so humble and seem so kind. In this malinial society we have going on today, I truly hope young people who I see sometimes around could just stop and be grateful for the little things....the gift of a song in my mind is so precious to me because it allows me to dream and transcend me to a life I continue to try and make better for my family and friends. I hope one day I get to meet these amazing men to say thank you for keeping me dreaming and hopeful for better life for my son, and sister 🌸🙏

I was raised in the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia - the Bible Belt.
My Mom was “different” people came to our home for her to “lay hands” but I was not allowed to speak about these things outside of the family.

I've watched many U2 interviews, but this one was very satisfying. I agree with others who want to see the ZooTV tour again ... Actung Baby is one of my favs! 🥰❤💋
Bono is so humble. Truthfully, his range is incredible, he also has such power in his voice. He can sing high notes in an open voice that would be deep into most male singers falsetto, and he never needed to be double tracked on a recording to get the power.
For me, the mark of a great singer is they dont need to double their vocals on the record. The emotion and subtlety of their voice comes through much more clearly, the sound is more organic. You just have to be a great singer to get away with it. Bono is.
U 2 needs to make a movie about there lives and there Journey becoming the best band in history.

I had the privilege of seeing U2 recently on the re-do Joshua Tree tour. It was a great concert, but agree could hear the angst and depth to make sure the greatness of these songs worked. They did work...was a fulfilling fantastic concert!!!

I saw the Detroit date with Beck opening and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Though I had back and neck problems for two days (standing on the floor four rows back from the B stage) after and was just slightly deafened from “Bullet the Blue Sky” it was so much fun.
Also, Larry smiled in this video and my mind is blown.
By FAR! the most interesting interview ever done to the geniuos U2 .
