    Congratulations on joining the gigabit club! The main thing I use the upload speed for, is offsite backups. I must push 60GB every other night up to Backblaze.
    On the UDM-PRO, I ran speed tests and then turned on the Intrusion Detection System and found that it had no impact on speed, but I only have 1 Gb symetric. It would be interesting if you turned that on and saw a difference. Ubiquiti says the UDM-PRO can handle 3.5Gb with IDS turned on.

    I've found that Steam will often be processor limited when downloading at around gig speeds, due to the compression they use and it using just one core for it (unless something has changed recently, that is.)

    You remind me of the time I got the Gig cable connection 2 years ago and went from 100/12 to 950/42. It was a mind blowing experience, like before with going from dial up to 3/384 cable back in 2004. If you're looking for a use for all that speed,set streams and vids to 4K, highest rates possible, with 1080 and highest rates possible at a minimum. Good use of that. Also, set up the 1G connection for the rest of the house to use while you glut on the 2G. Screw that Netgear router. Use your own equipment and keep that other one in the box. Congrats on your hard work. Your life has changed forever 😎

    I live in Northwestern New Mexico in a rural small town and I've had Comcast in my name for 4 1/2 years and I was paying $190 for 2 years and since December 2022 I now pay $110 for 1.2 Gbps Download it says 35 Mbps upload but I actually get 1.2-1.5 Gbps Download 40-50Mbps Upload Speeds and Love it and what's funny is we have had AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile but no 5G Home Internet and no Fiber from any other company and we have 28-30 Devices, Computers, Laptops, Tablets, 3 Xbox Consoles and Phones and other smart devices and no lag and Unlimited Data I use somewhere between 5-6 Terabytes of data each month and Love it! It's funny how my internet is faster then our local college internet and faster then most others and also found out I am at the end of the Fiber Line as I was told by the Comcast/Xfinity Technician and he said he heard that soon I will be getting the Multi-Gig Rollout by Summer 2023 and that's insane and looking forward to it!! Love Streaming in 4K and gaming in 4K and my ping is 5-6 Milliseconds on Average and my friend who is an Internet Technician and he says I probably have the fastest in internet connection in my area its strange how my neighbors around me can't get it and they are mad so I let a few of them use my Private Wifi which doesn't slow down my connection and they say it's faster then their connection which was a huge surprise!!

    I would love to have gigabit pro. In fact I do not know why someone so close to the fiber would not have the option to go to their epon service for only the instillation fee. That being said I am running their gigabit tier and it works well here. I will say this though I did have problems in the past. I live about one mile from the CMTS and about 1000 yards from the fiber. My neighborhood is about 10 homes that run off the tap. So naturally we arnt fighting for bandwidth since several do not have internet service. Now that brings me to the next place. I moved here after high school while I was joining the army and my mom owned the place. I was also enrolling in college at the time so I got cable internet. All in all it was actually cheaper than what we were paying for dialup just five miles away. The service has been upgraded greatly since then. I initially setup a linksys router and the Media One installers ran me a brand new drop to the link in the woods. My mother moved out of the house while I was in Iraq and I started renting it in 2005 when I returned. There were connection issues so Comcast, who had purchased media one, ran another new drop to the junction box. That was about 130 feet. Finally, in 2010 there was a near lightning strike that fried the drop again and the replaced it yet again. They also replaced the junction box and all of the amps to my house and the neighbors. I get the increased cost of fiber but this would have been one install had they just done fiber to begin with. Not a patch job every few years. There is zero reason for comcast and other cable providers to continue to dump money into Arris communications. When something goes out just replace it with fiber and be done with it. I do not get the difficulty with that other than they seem to want to almost support Arris to the point of making a political statement. I get it they supported them for years but Arris makes an EPON box. If they will not come to terms with pricing just go with another vendor...
    Good luck to you. I would also like to know if there is anything in your service agreement about sharing your service. One thing I had floated before the pandemic was I would get the service, front the money for the install, and then offer the 1 gig leg to be shared by my neighbors. That would be very effective now since one of our neighbors has a child with an immune condition. Although it seems like he would be fine if he got it there is still the desire for the entire family to telework. Two kids on zoom and two parents. I would setup a system to provide service to the entire neighborhood that wants to chip in until comcast is willing to transition over to all fiber. That would mean each one would be responsible for point to point UBNT link or doing a GPON install. I would split the cost amongst them to offset the $300 a month service cost. My goal would be to get my cost to $100 a month and that would mean four neighbors would pay $50 each. They would pay less than they are now and get more bandwidth. I know this isnt a business tier so I dont know if it would be under their TOS to setup a LLC and then add them as members?

  • @arishem555

    Not sure why are they limiting your connection to 2Gbps, cause physical media for your connection is 10G. And there is a very low chance that you will use it even 1h per day. But it could become game-changing once it's coming to using any cloud. Like Azure/Onedrive or other private sharing/storage services. Cause again, - there is no risk at all that you will oversubscribe that uplink, but for those 3-10 minutes per day, - it is really important to get that fast connectivity. They should even stimulate users to generate data! Because that is how ISPs are getting money! They are peering with each other and whoever generated more data, - getting more profit.

    Can you not load balance the 2 circuits? You will not be able to get a full 3GB out of the building but you'll be able to prioritise traffic so that (say) youtube uses the 2gb and household surfing uses the 1gb. You'll also be able to make multiple connections to servers concurrently which will help with things like torrent and other things. you may not need to "manage" your bandwidth now but down the line it'll be helpful. the problem I've found with more bandwidth is that it is never enough. You'll always find ways to max out your feed.

    I’m watching from the uk 🇬🇧 and compared to what we have access to, it seems odd to have two separate lines coming out of the juniper router 2Gbps + 1Gbps rather than just the one at 3Gbps.
    I did think it sounded wise as a redundant option, but as both connections are supplied by the same device (juniper) it seems unlikely that one would fail and the other function… other than that odd point, it looks like you’ve got a sweet setup! Streaming services are always giving recommendations on the minimum bandwidth for their service tiers.
    I’d like to know exactly how much data Netflix / Hulu / Amazon / etc will use if there are no limits!
    I’m also interested in seeing the performance of the cable provider’s Roku app (assuming they have one). I always found switching channels to be annoying, because every channel has to load / buffer (vs the instantaneous feed of a traditional coax cable box). ...will a 2gig fiber make the experience equivalent?

      Mario S : Well, that’s a generic answer to “how fast can you connect to xx service” , but I don’t think it applies here.
      Two reasons: 1) We’re talking about streaming video content, which is highly managed (and the max download that Netflix will allow is WELL below what their servers are CAPABLE of delivering if they removed all restrictions)
      2) I’m pretty sure that Netflix has made deals with broadband providers to co-locate their servers for optimal data distribution.
      3) Netflix (in the past) made a point to call out the local service providers if the connection was suboptimal. On the client-side.
      Perhaps this isn’t the best time, though... considering they may still be throttling the service due to the ongoing global situation

    Does this gig connection solve buffer bloat issues? 🤔 Usually when fast internal connection (lan) meets slow external connection (wan) you get delays due to buffer bloat, not important just my own curiosity... random thoughts.

    • @enragedbacon470
      @enragedbacon470 3 роки тому

      Buffer bloat can be solved with simple QoS. Unless the upload is so bad it doesn't meet the minimum requirement for the application you are trying to use. But in theory, yes, an internet connection that fast should have no buffer bloat problems.

    • @aware24
      @aware24 3 роки тому

      Enraged Bacon Yeah I drool at not having to deal with buffet bloat. I’ve had to use fq_codel and cake to combat buffer bloat. But you have to throttle your connection to just a bit lower speed then what you get from your raw ISP to make it work. Since ISP speeds vary throughout the day some days the ISP speeds dip below the thresholds I’ve set and still see bufferbloat, but I’m guessing this problem can still occur on gig connections if ISP speeds dip throughout the day. Anyways too much info, random thoughts.

    I don't understand the suggestion that a faster connection would mean a possibility of going over your data cap, if you have one. I would still have the same (roughly) data I download over a month. Just because I have a faster download speed, I wouldn't
    download more stuff, only quicker. I must be missing something...

    Not sure why you are requesting IPv6 routed network from Comcast, cause routers should be able to negotiate that prefix assigned to you. I had applied a couple of years before config to cisco router and it got automatically routed ipv6 subnet for my LAN without any issues. You should have the same concept. Not sure how to configure it for ubiquity.

  • @justinra8487

    Unless they changed how it works, yes they will give you static IPv4 addresses but not IPv6. I have a block of 5 static IPv4 addresses but have to use DHCP for IPv6 address. On the Unifi controller, under "networks", I had to set my wan interface to, Connection Type "Using DHCPv6" and Prefix Delegation Size to "64". Originally IPv4 was DHCP as well. I had to and still pay for the "Block of 5 static IPs"

      Michael Bell - I’m not sure about static IPv6 as I’m not knowledgeable about how they work yet but I’m sure there’s somewhere online you can find explaining it. You might need PFsense for that. I have not tried anything other than DHCP with IPv6. It is nice to see that they still gave him a static IPv4 since they’re so scarce now unlike me who had to pay to get one. Regardless unless you’re running mission critical servers FQDN forwarding works so well now it’s not really necessary. I use a domain I got through Google Domains that I use instead of manual IP mapping

    • @Moonraker11
      @Moonraker11 3 роки тому

      It's not technically DHCP but it's called SLAAC with IPv6. Your ISP gives you a /64 for the Prefix Delegation and each client on your network goes through SLAAC to auto-configure itself...
