First, great job and love the transparency. Mistakes will happen and you showed great character in accepting and overcoming them. Hi Larry, Thank you for a lovely comment and for the question. There is no true way to measure the quantity required... it all depends on the surface type and the step you are doing. I have done a few skateboard decks 1070 mm by 250 mm and it normally takes 30 gram of mixture for one coat ( 21 resin + 7 hardener ) so hopefully this is what you could take s a sample.
@@PavelGarmas Thank you! Since my project is so small I will only need around 4 grams based on your specs. It's a good place to start. Much appreciated.
Great video! Just thought I would leave a tip here. If you want to protect your material from fraying while you are handling it, tape the area you want to cut. @@AkiraSumida1 hi there! I would say it's the fine sanding and polishing....did you wet sand? How low did you go on the grit? What polishing compound did you use mate?
@@PavelGarmas Hi and thank you for the reply! I did wet sanding with 1000, 1500, and 2500 grit. I used Meguiar's brand clear coat safe polish. It improves a little bit after the polish, but still has a very matte finish look to it
@@AkiraSumida1 Very strange....one other option is to sand it down slightly ...dry...800 grit and lacquer it. This is the best lacquer in the can...see the link. This is how i finished my other deck with ftit.
Andrew! Thank you so much ; ) I have made another two using blue carbon and also a custom printed fabric...available on my channel if interested. Thanks again.
"starting at the middle" - * starts at the end. You should look into the "Carbon Pro" product that same company offers. It is mainly for skinning and has something added to one side so it keeps all the weaves absolutely perfect. They can't move around all and you get a perfect surface. I just ordered my fist batch of it and I'm looking forward to using it. p.s. Great video. You explain things well. Thumbs up.
Hi John, Thank you for a lovely comment. The material you are referring to is called the web-lock. I was thinking that but I think the tape will get stuck down so badly that you will have to send down anyway....it is quite easy to sand it so no problem : )
Iv just started doing this. I got my carbon fibre weave delivery and was all folded and see pulled areas so Iv tried pulling it straight and line up again.

An excellent job explaining the details of this process, Pavel. You have given me an idea: Carbon skin on my snow shovel. I am only half joking. I think it would work, but I wonder how it would hold up in extreme cold? Well I suppose it would be easier and cheaper to just buy a new shovel as needed:) But a carbon fiber snow shovel would make me the envy of the neighborhood:) Last week I sent my Evolve board off for an upgrade to Samsung 18650 30Q cells. It is a project that requires some deck modification and is on the expensive side, but I love riding that board and certainly could not purchase an equivalent replacement for anywhere near the cost of this upgrade. I must say though that for the price Evolve charges, they certainly do not include high quality batteries. By the way your carbon fiber deck is a thing of beauty!
Hello David! I was worried that you will not show up : ) Thanks God ! The carbon shovel would be awesome!I would definitely make one and have a titanium edge on it for better show cutting . I am glad that you are enjoying the Evolve board. Upgraded battery is always a good thing. i did upgrade couple of the battery packs using the Samsung 30 Q and the difference is very noticeable! The range and the torques will feel different mate. Any progress with the ranger? Are you using it at all? Looking forward to you video! When?
@@PavelGarmas Yes, my friend, I am riding the ranger daily. The vibration may be diminishing just a bit (or I have grown accustomed to it) but I am really looking forward to getting the Evolve back! As far as a video goes, I need to get a wider angle compact, such as a GoPro, because I refuse to use my DSLR on a skate board:) And I may well invest in new camera at some point:)
Hi, Very good question. i have never done it myself because it does require special equipment. Prepregs are conventional reinforcements that been specially pre-impregnated with catalysed resin during manufacture. Because the resin has already been mixed with its hardener, prepreg carbon fibre needs to be stored at very low temperatures to prevent the resin from curing before the material is used. Typical cure temperatures for prepregs range from 60°C up to around 180°C with the most common cure temperature for out-of-autoclave pre-pregs being around 100°C. There is a limitation on what materials you can apply it on due to the temperatures that are involved. i do use a hand laying technique on the electric skateboard parts. Hope this helps.
Hello! Thank you for watching my video and thank you for the nice comment! Link for the company that i got all the materials from as requested : www.easycomposites.co.uk/#!/fabric-and-reinforcement/carbon-fibre-reinforcement Stick around and ride safely buddy!
Hey mate, Thank you very much for a nice comment. I do have two more videos on the carbon and fabric skinning and do explain what is required material wise...have you seen them? For carbon fiber skinning you will need : XCR base coat, XCR resin, XCR hardener, 11/2" brushes, mixing cups, mixing sticks, carbon fiber material , sand paper ( dry and wet type ). I would recommend 400,800,1500 and 2000 grid. Hope this helps.

Tiaan, Thank you for your time watching the video and for the nice comment. I do really hope that this tutorial will help you to make your perfect deck, I got all the video on how to make and cut the deck if you are interested.
A good detailed video, however it looks like the board needs a bit more flattening (sanding) and I always find applying 2K automotive lacquer gives a way better finish rather than polishing the epoxy. Lacquering also gives you the choice to have a gloss or matt finish.
Thank you. I have a few decks that i made and did use the lacquer on the last one. It is much shinier but does scratch easier. ua-cam.com/video/vNX6lH7P2WI/v-deo.html
Instead of polishing at the very end,i think you can add a layer of clearcoat and it would look better then just polishing it but i do like the way the deck cane out.
Hello George! Thank you for watching and for the comment. I did think of clear coating but the supplier did mention that the clear coat could react with the resin and change the colour….I will try a small piece and see what will happen. Thanks for this video Pavel 👍 I've always wanted to know how to do this properly. This will come in handy for my car I've had issues with my boot. I've been using flex tape to make my board stronger BTW don't laugh... Once again great video m8 👍

Hey boss! I saw on another video if you put down painter tape before you cut the material it helps to keep it from fraying! Definitely looks like that’s one of the hardest parts of working with this stuff
Thank you for the comment! I did find that the tape does disturb the pattern to be honest. This was my first time doing it and I am quite happy with the results, Thanks again and stick around buddy!
What state are you located in? I really would look to get this done on my dashboard for my car. Im in California, know any shops that do this form of work? Epic vid by the way.
Hello there! Thank you for watching the video and for the comment. I am in London United Kingdom mate ; ) Not sure if there are any shops who do this in California but sure there will be. Why don`t you try do do this yourself? Choose another small part or object that does have similar curves as your dash and practice- choose something that you will not feel bad if it is not 100%. Then move on to the dashboard. It will be much cheaper plus the feeling doing it yourself is unreal : ) I have never done this and the video was made during my first time : ) I did have to send the surface down couple of times but it was not that hard. Let me know how you get on buddy and if any questions - just ask. Be safe!
Haha! Good idea mate ; ) This is the exact process that you can use to carbon skin some of your M3 interior panels ! Would make it awesome looking mate : ) Give it a try!

As per my other comment, awesome vid, and like the slight shift in direction the camera is from. but, and this is just might just be my preference, the camera being tilted is slight distracting in my opinion. Not when focusing on the board, the tilt is fine then, its only distracting when on you. Keep up the awesome vids man!
People tend to forget carbon fiber is basically the same as fiberglass when it comes to skin irritant. Do not, under any circumstances, power sand indoors unless you fully expect to completely coat your room with the material. I'm now out $1100 after needing to re-carpet and repaint an indoor hobby room. Sometimes blindly following suggestions on UA-cam while not keeping common sense in mind can hurt.
I do work in my garage / workshop during the cold months but do most of the sanding down in the garden where i do wash all the surfaces down after sanding.
Hi! Thank you for watching and for the comment mate. It is a good idea I guess but what about the shape and the flex of the deck? carbon fiber is very hard and i would need to use multiple layers to make it strong enough to hold my weigh - there would be no flex on that deck i think. Did you see the deck Jump test? Came out perfect. Ride safely buddy !
Great video, you did a much better job than me, but also recommend thin masking tape first then cut the tape in half. Apart from preventing the CF from fraying I've found it helps stop fine fibres from being released in the air. A mask when handling the CF will help prevent a nasty cough caused by the CF fibres in the air. Edit, I just finished watching the whole video and I have to admit your finish is much better than mine was. I'm not sure if I used the wrong resin or wasn't careful enough with cleaning or maybe got the method wrong but well done. Top tip for anyone reading this is do not buy cheap sand paper, get it from a professional car paint shop or similar professional supplier. Cheap sand paper or the rubbish from Halfords will ruin your finish as I discovered when painting my car.
Thank you very much for watching and commenting, I do agree with you. In my defence, I did use the dust mask ….. had to take it off a couple of times when talking though.
Wait a minute: @ 13:00 You attach first layer of carbon fabric on the wooden "form" @ 17:00 You put first layer of resin on @ 18:50 you show the board with excess fiber from the bottom and it has a perfectly luster carbon surface. Where did the wooden board which served as a form go? And I assume you can´t make a board out of one layer of resin and carbon. Plus, you mentioned it always that it is the first layer. Seems like they were many steps missing. Thought that I missed it but clicked several times through to check. Besides that: Great Tutorial Video!
Hi! Thank you for the comment mate! ok ...so...the deck is not a carbon fiber deck - it is a 12 ply deck that i did reshape to fit the AT wheels and the used the real carbon fiber skinning process too cover the top and the bottom of the deck. Thank you for checking out my video mate! You are correct CF duct is not the nicest thing : ) Sounds like you got some experience with it....what did you use the CF on ?
There are still drips along the edges. I am not sure why he didn't start on the top. I am not sure why he is polishing the part of the deck he is going to cover with tape. I am still going to try carbon fiber skinning, but I thought any idiot can do it.
I would not be calling everyone an idiot... The reason for polishing the top is to get a perfect finish regardless if you cover it up or not plus i have used a custom cut grip tape and a lot of the carbon was still on the show. Drips were sanded off after and the edgrs came out perfectly. Still got the deck at it is performing well. Build safely.

@@PavelGarmas Hi and thank you for the reply! I did wet sanding with 1000, 1500, and 2500 grit. I used Meguiar's brand clear coat safe polish. It improves a little bit after the polish, but still has a very matte finish look to it

Very strange....one other option is to sand it down slightly ...dry...800 grit and lacquer it.

this is the best skinning video ever thanks man
Andrew! Thank you so much ; )
I have made another two using blue carbon and also a custom printed fabric...available on my channel if interested.
Thumbs up.
Hi John,
Thank you for a lovely comment. The material you are referring to is called the web-lock. It was not available when i was making the tutorial .... it is fine to use a normal carbon fiber as well as long as you are taking your time.
Have you seen my other two videos - the colored carbon and custom fabric installation?
Interesting what project are you working on?

Hi, im following your video but I think you missed the "how to get rid of the stickiness" part after you applied the final coating of the resin. Cause you need to sand it to apply a clear coat or the cutting substance. Cause mine is still sticky, its been 2 days already. How you can help me out. Thanka in advance.
Hi mate,
I have made a video and editing at the moment. The video will be out next Wednesday.
Hello sir. Loving your tutorial videos. Very informative. Just one quick question. Care to share how do you clean the brushes from the epoxy resin & hardener?
Hello buddy!
Thank you for the comment. By the way, I have just uploaded two new videos on a coloured carbon fibre skinning - take a look ; ) ua-cam.com/video/a2PgMyWAMrM/v-deo.html
Regarding the brushes - I do throw away a brush and a cup every time I do a coat unfortunately however there was a comment on my new video that it is possible to wrap up the brush very tightly an put in in the refrigerator at - 20 degree and evidently that stops it from getting dry,
Hope this helps.
Do you think putting tape on the bottom (when doing the top for example) might help avoid drops, etc?
I was thinking that but I think the tape will get stuck down so badly that you will have to send down anyway....it is quite easy to sand it so no problem : )
@@PavelGarmas ah yes, that actually makes sense. and easier to sand out some bad spots than trying to get the tape out. good thinking
Iv just started doing this. I got my carbon fibre weave delivery and was all folded and see pulled areas so Iv tried pulling it straight and line up again.
You can do it on the large glass table....slowly work it straight....

normally you must have a vaccum systeme to remove bubble before polymerization. But very nice job man !!!!
Correct, vacuum system is normally used but all the components cost a lot of money and it's not worth getting a full set up if you are not usually it often. Hand laying is hardrr but diable.
Thank you for watching mate 👍
Very good video
Hi!

I hope the video did have all the information that you were after. I got quite a few videos on my channel so feel free to take a look : )

An excellent job explaining the details of this process, Pavel. You have given me an idea: Carbon skin on my snow shovel. I am only half joking. I think it would work, but I wonder how it would hold up in extreme cold?
Well I suppose it would be easier and cheaper to just buy a new shovel as needed:) But a carbon fiber snow shovel would make me the envy of the neighborhood:)
Last week I sent my Evolve board off for an upgrade to Samsung 18650 30Q cells.
Dear Sir, I have prepreged carbon fiber fabric how can I use it for skining
Hi,
Very good question. i have never done it myself because it does require special equipment.
Amazing tutorial. Can you post a link of where you purchased the carbon and resin

great video! is it possible if you can add a list of all the specific products you used?
Hey mate,
Thank you very much for a nice comment.
I would recommend 400,800,1500 and 2000 grid.

ua-cam.com/video/vNX6lH7P2WI/v-deo.html
It would of being easier than polishing that is for sure : )

Hello there!
Thank you for watching the video and for the comment. I am in London United Kingdom mate ; )
Not sure if there are any shops who do this in California but sure there will be.
Why don`t you try do do this yourself? Choose another small part or object that does have similar curves as your dash and practice- choose something that you will not feel bad if it is not 100%. Then move on to the dashboard. It will be much cheaper plus the feeling doing it yourself is unreal : )

As per my other comment, awesome vid,
and like the slight shift in direction the camera is from.
but, and this is just might just be my preference, the camera being tilted is slight distracting in my opinion.
Not when focusing on the board, the tilt is fine then, its only distracting when on you.
Keep up the awesome vids man!
btw, if you keep the tilt consistent it would also be better, but the tilt changes all the time.
still a good vid though
Good tips mate! I do love when people comment on the videos especially with improvement tips,
Thank you and I will consider for my new videos.
This is a really nice tutorial, but i can't get over the fact that you look like Jim Jefferies and Stew for UAVFutures :D
😆
Just googled it... cheers mate 👍
Hope it's a compliment ☺️
wouldn't been better if the deck was pure carbon without the wood?
Also recommend laying down a strip of tape where you cut, and cutting through the tape, it will help prevent fraying at the edges. Nice work though
Believe it or not - this was the first time I done it : )
Came out really good actually and I do still use the deck - all good !
Thanks again mate.
Могу ошибаться,но мне показалось(Павел Гармаш) что ты русский:))

For a video like this I recommend a respirator, and then for the audio do a voice over for the audio. Next time right?
Thank you very much for watching and commenting,
I do agree with you. In my defence, I did use the dust mask ….. had to take it off a couple of times when talking though.
Not bad. Shouldn’t brush it like that you can ruin the fibers immediately. Dab it in for first coat.
Wait a minute:
@ 13:00 You attach first layer of carbon fabric on the wooden "form"
@ 17:00 You put first layer of resin on
@ 18:50 you show the board with excess fiber from the bottom and it has a perfectly luster carbon surface.
The reasons were to give it strength and the looks : ) I love the way the carbon fiber looks.
Video has all the steps its just the confusion was with the wooden form....it is not a form but the deck skeleton. The deck would be too hard with no flex if you do not have the plywood core.
