I am glad that the part failed on you. Not because I am nasty, but because you were willing to show us the failures also, and why it happened. That way, we can learn from you, and do not have to (maybe?) experience the same (hopefully). Although the "patch" fender is not within my own taste, it is definitely something else. I have not seen it before (not that I have seen all styles in my life.) But nevertheless, the part you created, looks great, and taught us valuable knowledge. Thank you for sharing with us.

And i appreciate this, that u upload your failed parts videos also... This is great type of knowledge cuz from your failure also we get to learn

      Hey
Thanks for your support. I'll start building the paint booth soon as I'm done with the bike. Everything going to get covered up in to dust, so I have to get everything out of the way first.
My next project will have a different cf pattern but I have to finish the Kawa with this pattern first.
I'm glad my video was useful for you. 🛠🤟

Despite the chemical release agent problem, a very nice job.
I would just suggest a layer of release wax before chemical agent as a safety.

  • @Lordy23

Don't worry @ZRcarbon, I've had exactly the same thing happen to me , but it was my original part got trashed my mould is still ok, it's all part of the learning , our processes were the same, I think where we both might have gone wrong was a chemical mould sealer , I used a rub on release wax which is good at best , I'll definitely use a mold sealer and also try chemical release agent next time, great video 👍🏼

Good luck for your work 🛠🤟

just a thought: You used tape onto the mold which already had the release agent on it. Perhaps the release agent may have been damaged during the removal of the tape, causing the carbon fiber to eventually adhere to the mold. It's nice to see that setbacks don't stop you from continuing. Good Job!

    • @zrcarbon9937
      @zrcarbon9937  Рік тому +3

      Hey
Unfortunately that wasn’t the case because off camera I did apply another 4 coats of release agent. I always use 2 or 3 coats of release agent before I make a template of the mould. The tape comes out so much easier. I forgot to put that into the video I did finish the mold up with the 4 coats of RAgent.
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching 🛠️🤘

The uni mould system isn't suitable for pre preg. It's better to use high temp epoxy and csm and woven cloth, then post cure the mould before layup.

With the easy composite release agent, I noticed it has to have a very strong smell when its still good. Very unpleasant, it makes you to wear a mask when you use it. The expired one doesn't have that smell.

Fantastic video, one trick I have used to separate parts from the mold is to use shop air after you get a wedge separating it slightly. As for release agent it just takes some experimentation to figure out what will work with what you are using. Molds will get better and need less release agent as they are used. I apply and buff out the release agent at least twice as many times as I think is necessary on the first part.

nice video. carbon is new for me. i need to do this :)
for your next project, try to thin out the mipa a bit with a solvent and apply a thinner coat so you have less structure / paint stripes and pin holes. then add a second and third coat over that, after that sand it. when sanding, dont use your fingertips but use the entire underside of your fingers close to eachother to prevent sanding uneven spots or create dents in your project. you only need to go forward and back 2 or 3 times with presure on 1 finger with 600, or even finer sandpaper, and you will see that in your end result. try to sand the whole part at once and smooth out away from the place you are focussing on so you will level the whole coat at once. you could spray a thin matt black coat over it when you start sanding so you have a guiding coat that will show you exactly what you are doing.
you can use a "wit plamuurrubber" for sanding (dutch, can't find the english name for it. google it), it will take the form of the part you are sanding and will give a smoother surface. just some soft rubber sqaure thing works perfect for shapes like this.

    Hello
Based on what I see from the video, you did not post cure the mold to 135 C, but went straight to the laying of carbon fiber. We can see that based on the color of the mold. Alter cure it's color should turn darker yellow. Also, I suppose you did not follow the proper procedure of applying the release agent ( 5 coats with 15 min intervals + leave last coat for 1 hour). This can happen to anyone, I also had my share of failed molds )

If you could tolerate a 2-3mm deviation from the original size of the fender, I imagine you could have simply used the fender as the mold itself, and applied woven carbon fiber cloth to the outside or inside, and adjusted the bolt holes accordingly, and/or used spacers on your bike to reattach the new carbon piece..
I recently saw a video where this process was utilized, and there is no wasted material, and no extra steps, and much, much quicker.. like I said, IF you have accounted for the discrepancies in tolerance, and are okay with a SLIGHTLY different aesthetic (either larger or smaller, depending on which outward or inner face is used to lay the new carbon fiber fabric.
This should only be done with structurally inconsequential parts, of course, in my opinion, such as panels and fenders :)

      Hey man
Yes you’re right. That is possible to do. In my case it wouldn’t work because the fender has several curves and bends which would mechanically lock the whole carbon part onto the oem fender.
The idea was to reproduce the fender as the original, but I messed up with the release agent. Will be a new video sometimes so correcting my failure with the fender. 🛠️🤘
