I enjoyed the Fallout series it definitely captured the spirit of playing a Fallout game. I liked Lucy's interview with Vault Elders and how it mirrored the character gen process of choosing the SPECIAL stats and starting skills. Also the Ghouls golden rule about reflecting how easy it is to get distracted by side quests.

If the first-person POV gives you motion sickness, good news: it's quite possible to play the Bethesda Fallout games in third-person mode! You might need to rely on VATS a bit more heavily than the average playthrough, but it's definitely a perfectly viable way to play the games. :)

Maximus was a tricky character to pull off, because he's emotionally stunted in a repressed way, whereas Lucy is emotionally stunted in a naive way. It's a lot easier to show a naive character growing as a person because the story just needs to toss them into progressively worse situations. Meanwhile, a repressed character needs to go through more internal growth, and that's both harder to show and less overtly entertaining. You kind of have to be invested in the repressed guy to be into his character growth, while the naive character becomes more endearing the more she goes through.

I suspect the info dump at the finale was the writers realizing "Oh shit, we gotta setup for the second season and don't have enough lore put out there."

I thought the finale was similar to Loki series 1 and I quite enjoyed it. I like the info dumping because it felt interesting to me.
I've never played any of the games but I watched it with my brother who has and got explanations of stuff throughout while also getting regular comments about how similar to the games many things were. He reacted to this the same way I reacted to Cyberpunk Edgerunner and I ppreciated that they seemed to make the setting carry over very seamlessly.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the now first canonical Trans character in scribe Dane played by Xelia Mendes Jones. The actor is Trans Masc Non-Binary, and it seems as though Dane is also Trans Masc non-binary as several times they are referred to with they/Them pronouns. It's honestly really cool and makes me very happy. Unfortunate that they're part of the BOS 😭

You can play in third person in 3, NV, and 4. I get motion sickness from first person, too, and I wouldn't have been able to put hundreds of hours into those games otherwise.

My favorite line is when coop talks about getting sidelined or distracted as a law of the wasteland.
That’s 100% accurate as I’ve restarted FO4 and am over 20 hours in and still haven’t messed with the main story

I'm a "backseat gamer" (I used to joke about doing a review blog from this perspective way before play-alongs or twitch was *ever* a thing) and I had an ex that *had to* complete all of everything in a game before completing it.
Now, I thoroughly enjoyed Fallout (I believe it was 4 because the New Vegas ^expansion^ came out just in time...) - but imagine having your *only* access to the game through someone with this approach who was also the epitome of "toxic basement dweller Real Gamer™" - while I didn't mind spending literally every spare moment watching (as I said, I really enjoyed it and is a top favorite) I did reach a point where doubling/tripling/quadrupling back to do a basic 'fetch quest' meant for half the characters' skill level - and therefore no real reward, not even a minor NPC interaction for flavor, was going to drive me *completely mad.*
I cannot emphasize this behavior enough; when we actually got to the point that would trigger the cutscene for the game finale my ex quick saved in order to go through every area and "wipe" it for bottle caps. There is no justification for this other than "totally dominating it and being The Best™" - not neurodivergence to satisfy compulsion or anything like that... Nothing. Just the weird idea of hitting everything on first playthrough.
TLDR: I have seen all the sidelines of the wasteland my friend, and not only do I know exactly what you're talking about and can relate in appreciation of its design, part of me wishes I couldn't. 😅 (The soundtrack slaps though.)

Between her role here and Lucy, and in “Arcane” where she’s Jinx, is Ella Purnell the secret ingredient in making a good not-adapting-specific-narrative Video Game Adaptations? Probably not, but hey she’s two for two so far.

For better or worse it was very faithful to the modern games. The meandering plotlines felt like encountering sidequests. The humour and tone. But it also felt reslly unfocused which isn't a bad thing iguess because i did have fun and the episodes felt like episodes with each one having their own opening middle and end.

  • @DuskyPredator

The humour of the franchise I have heard is like the idea of telling people to hide underneath their desk in the event of a nuclear blast. It is dark and twisted, a little tragic, but also a bite of funny at the ridiculousness. I think the show did that well.

I’m unsure if this’ll be up your alley but if you did want to explore more of the fallout world in a way that would work without the motion sickness issues. there is an offical fallout table top role playing game made by modiphius that I highly recommend. Happy to see so many people coming to love a franchise I hold dear to my heart!

I loved the show. Similar to youbai only had some small peripheral experience of the games, but really enjoyed the lore.
I loved how they didn't dull Lucy's vault costume precisely because it makes her stand out more and seems more obvious to both us as the viewer and the wasteland faults that she doesnt belong. And only Lucy isnt aware of how much she stands out. Its an interesting visual marker that trying to make her blend in would have ruined.

I've only ever played FO4 (and by that I mean hundreds of hours LOL) and a little of NV, and I think the show is a really great adaptation of the world. It was very faithful while also adding to the lore! I enjoyed it a lot, so I've decided to start from the first Fallout and make my way through them all the way to 4 and play through it again. It for sure is harder to get into with how dated the first two are. On that note, I did a similar thing with the Witcher franchise and forced myself to play the first two Witcher games before Witcher 3, which is considered one of the best games ever, and it was definitely worth going through them for that background. I'm already nearing the end of 2 though! Excited to get into 3 and NV.

  • @Chaedron1

I really enjoyed the show. The humor and everything was perfect for me, I'm in the same boat having never really played the games but still being interested in the lore and world. I even liked the twists that were different from the game. I believe one of the producers of the show was also a producer on the games so they had Bethesda's blessing and guidance with the story. The biggest difference between the game and the show, from what I've read is that you don't know who is responsible for the initial nuclear war in the games. But how they handled it in the show was great given today's current political and economic landscape it seemed very relevant.

There seems to be a definite throughline to Jonathan Nolan's shows. It would be interesting to look into the connective tissue between Person of interest, Westworld and Fallout. Less cyberpunk in this one though which is interesting because *gestures vaguely at the world*

Fallout 3,4 and NV can be played in 3rd person. I play in 3rd person and very much prefer it if that’s something you want to try playing again. I love the show! So much nostalgia was there and they really went into the set designs to make it very much like the games. It was awesome 😊

Shōgun was a real surprise. Kinda came out of the blue for me, and I initially expected it to be glossy and shallow. But damn, it's been hugely entertaining and engrossing.
Love just how unhurried it is in particular - it just lets you sit with scenes and moments.
Not seen the finale yet, but definitely looking forward to it. Fallout is pretty darn good as well, but I certainly prefer Shōgun. Hope Vera covers it as well.

Even though I never managed to get into the games -- and I did try -- I am kinda interested in the show.
The post-apocalyptic type of setting is one that I like particularly because there's a lot of different things you can do with it as a writer. Which means when it comes to stories in that sort of world, I'm more interested in stories that are laid out with multiple perspectives on the world, than stories I inhabit as a single player-character.
I always get the sense that the game itself is getting in the way of the parts of the setting I'm actually excited to see, a lot moreso than with other kinds of worlds.
Come to think of it this is probably the same problem I had with Dark Souls. Not that the game wasn't fun, but, like, I just kept wishing I was reading the worldbuilding section of the design document. :)
Unfortunately I can't afford to subscribe to everything and Prime is still fairly low on the list. But, next time I have access to it this is probably what I'll be checking out.

This show was excellent all the way around. Great emersion into the world and the characters are chefs kiss. I haven't enjoyed a show this much in a long time.
I do agree about the ending but at the same time it just makes me more excited for the second season. It's a 10/10 for me.

In the age of remakes and remasters, Fallout 3 and NV would be PERFECT candidates to give the full blown remake treatment. Those games were horribly unpolished and visually dated even for their time, and they only aged worse. I tried numerous attempts to get into FO3/NV and bounce off after 3-4 hours every time, and it's largely because of the technical shortcomings. Cmon Bethesda, look at what Capcom achieved with RE2 and 4. That could be you too...
