It is totally possible to eat Keto on a budget! I eat Keto on $200 to $250 a month, with no sales or coupons. I shop at Walmart only, so if I had other choices, it could be even cheaper. Admittedly, I don't eat much of a variety, no "treats", and I keep it all "clean" and my carbs under 20g per day due to food allergies and sensitivities, but I get along just fine. I've lost over 60 lbs, and brought my A1c from 11.5 to 6.6 in the last year, no exercise.

Depending on your definition of clean keto, you can definitely do it on a budget. To me, clean keto is eating whole food and not the processed keto version of traditional junk food. You don't need grass fed beef, pasture raised eggs or Kerrygold butter. And the $8 a pint Rebel ice cream is not needed when you can eat heavy whipping cream with a few berries. Great video, though. I truly love what you do.

    • @LiveANoursishedLife

As someone who lives on a very very tight budget I can say the taste in pasture raised eggs and those that aren't taste very different. I have always loved eggs but when I tried the pasture-raised I was blown away. However, I just started Keto this month and I may have to give them up unfortunately. Like you said they are very expensive. I've also had breast cancer so I am very funny about foods with gmo and pesticides, soy, etc. So I do try and go organic when I can. But that's just me.

Daaang. I need an Albertsons around here!! $3 for bacon is unheard of right now 🤯 The best Keto ice cream I’ve had is the Enlightened caramel chocolate double dough. Something that could affect the food budget for keto-ers is that many people who are keto also do IF. Only eating twice a day would reduce the budget 👍 I’ve been eating dirty keto or low carb since August, and I’m down 50 lbs and reversed my T2D diagnosis.

Even if you do IF you eat bigger portions at those 2 meals tho, maybe not as much as 3 tho. I don't think she got enough fat honestly especially with all that chicken, and coconut oil, avocados, other nut butters and flours, etc are pretty expensive

I wanted to try them, but will probably go back to making chaffles, almond cheese muffins and other homemade keto breads. I just started a couple of weeks ago, so seeing what is out there. I did however refrain from spending $2.99 on bag of keto crackers or parm chips, the size of a single serve chip bag!

I think it's possible to do pretty much any diet on a budget. I have been on a low fat/high carb diet (pretty much opposite of Keto for 17 years now) for Multiple Sclerosis and the one excuse that is pretty popular is that it's too expensive. I buy mostly whole foods (not AT Whole Foods lol). I stock up when things are on sale (like chicken) and buy what's in season and on sale for the week. Our food bill is pretty low!

This was great! My son is on a similar diet to keto (grain, sugar, lactose, starch free) so seeing it doesn't have to be so expensive is great! FYI, Walmart sells a 10 lb bag of chicken quarters
for $6.67 (approx). It used to be $5 but alas with food prices going up, this did too, but it's still $.67 a lb! :) Almond flour is what is so expensive. Costco has it the cheapest but still - $4-$5 a lb.

I’ve done Keto off and on for about 3 years. It’s definitely easy to do it on a budget. I have an Aldi so that helps with my budget. One thing that helps with the craving for bread is Chaffles. Cheese and eggs in a baby waffle maker and they make great substitutes for hubs or bread. I use cream cheese for a spread and that helps too. Bread? I make my own and make Keto friendly bagels. I think it depends on how you're defining clean. I save on keto because I just eat meat, eggs and vegetables. Keto junk food (like the ice cream and keto bars) aren't clean and they are expensive. And feeling like you need special ingredients (so you can make homemade junk food) will make it a lot more expensive. Personally I don't consider those special ingredients especially "clean".
I just look for meat below a price per pound that works for me and usually get the frozen vegetables unless fresh is cheaper. Also, if you're going to eat clean keto, you're probably not going to be eating several meals a day. Once you're fat adapted, eating habits tend to change to 1 or 2 meals a day. I think if you try to compare eating standard to keto directly (ie, convenience foods, 3+ meals a day), it will look like keto is more expensive. But once you eat that way, it isn't expensive. It's just meat, veg, and eggs - pretty basic.

Mom bought cracked eggs, day old bread, stewing hens, made noodles, Dad hunted a bit to subsidize our meat. We also went to the packing sheds and bought fruit and veggies at very low prices. A gunny sack of corn was $1.00. 50# of potatoes was $2.00. We canned and froze foods for long term storage.

I was going to say, and others have said it but it's totally possible to do eat on a budget...depends on what your budget is.. with that being said keto/low carb can be very easy and very budget friendly

Wow, feels good not to be the only one. Every week I go to 3 different stores (Aldi, Kroger & Big Lots) for specific things & specific deals. I also have to hit Dollar General & Dollar Tree usually once a week or every other week as well. That's just how it works & I get what I want & save money this way too! Love watching your videos, thanks for sharing!

I could definitely eat all those veggies in a week! I'm more veggies to less meat ratio. I'd add veggies to my eggs for breakfast or make mini quiche adding cheese. Yum!

My daughter started a low carb diet last year, not keto just reducing her carb intake. She didn't like the Halo Top keto ice cream. She does like the Enlightened keto ice cream though. I have to eat gluten free and dairy free, due to allergies, and while it can be expensive to buy the gluten free flours and some plant based milks, once you get started building your pantry it really isn't more expensive. I shop around between my local grocery stores, not Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, Thrive Market, Misfits Market, and occasionally Imperfect Foods. By following Christine's tips it can be done on a budget.

Single guy here. I just grab the keto bowl from Chipotle’s most nights. When not there, It’s a big steak or burger at home. Eggs are a breakfast staple. Keep frozen vegetables on hand as well as berries, frozen or fresh. Snack on cheese and peanut butter. That’s about it. Lately things are going up but I still keep to my normal food budget more or less , which is around $400 per month. Some people think that’s high but it’s all relative. I just hope these darn price increases stop soon or I will be a beans and rice guy by necessity lol not keto friendly but budget friendly lol

I lost 88 pounds on Keto over about 2 years. I’ve maintained by weight give it take 5 to 8 pounds. Always lose more over the summer. My problem is I’m a little tired of Keto. I really am. I’ve switched to just low carb. I count my carbs. I’ve gone back to a few beans a week. Oatmeal occasionally and once in a while a baked potato. My family was tired of me always turning down food or not just not eating. I have to admit that a few carbs a week has definitely made me feel a little better. I also started to fast more frequently about twice a week. I’m 65 and in great health. Keto is definitely an answer to many people but I need a bit more in my life. 😉

I lost about 90lbs since June 2020 , I’m staring to incorporate complex carbs too back into my diet , one serving per day like black beans or chickpeas and overall I feel great. No inflammation or pain, no need to take extra magnesium since the beans have loads of that

Frozen avocados taste just like fresh avocados because essentially they are fresh frozen at their Peak and cut up there's no different you just have to thaw them

The Rebel keto ice cream is pretty good. The Halo top is better if you microwave it for 15-20 seconds or let it thaw for a little bit at room temp. It definitely improves the texture.

I love the frozen diced avocados! I put them in protein shakes- super yummy! As far as peanut butter, I highly recommend the almond or mixed seeds butter at Costco. Super yummy and healthier than regular peanut butter too with no added sugars so less carbs and without the inflammatory oils. I love that unsweetened vanilla almond milk too! It is easier to go through than many frozen veggies than you would think...I put 3 bags of different kinds into my eggs for breakfast that last 2-3 days. Then usually a bag or 2 added into whatever we are eating for dinner too, so I alone probably average 1 1/2-2 bags of frozen veggies a day, not including our fresh ones. 🙈

I think you did great showing how you can eat keto on a budget! i've been keto for several years now. I prefer the Enlightened Keto ice cream over Halo Top but to be honest I avoid the processed foods anyway, so don't buy ice cream or bars or other treats. The only change I would make is that I would buy heavy whipping cream instead of almond milk and I would buy salad greens in place of some of the frozen veggies. It's a great way of eating, you should give it a try! Thanks for all of your great content!

Thank you for this! I personally would have swapped some of the frozen veggies for spinach and mushrooms and made a quiche with the eggs. Also, if you don’t like the low carb o r cream you could make some easy fat bombs to keep in the freezer. Just an FYI: it’s not just about the macros. The reason you see people on keto eating a lot of fresh mushrooms, spinach and avocados is because they are high in potassium and magnesium, which get depleted when your ketosis flushes out all of the excess water you are carrying around.

I'm low carb because of Type 2 diabetes. I stay away from things marketed to diabetics and diets, the price is always higher. I eat for very little cost though. Those Carb Balance tortillas shoot my blood glucose sky high. So, I don't touch them. My grocery bill has dropped. I have a mix of fresh and frozen veg though.

When I buy Greek yogurt or Skyr (icelandic yogurt that's even thicker than Greek) I usually buy Liberte brand. It's the Canadian answer to Chobani or Fage. Even if it's more expensive - I justify the quality over the cheaper price point. The Liberte version doesn't have all the "filler" skim milk powder etc in it that the cheaper brands tend to. Also, I buy the plain because it is WAAAAAY less sugar than the flavours and then add a crystal light single packet (the kind intended for a single serve water bottle) to the yogurt. Now, it might be a bright pink but it's raspberry peach flavoured without any sugar! Heather xo

Since you are net carb ing Fage yogurt is easily enhanced with flavor by squirting Mio (or equivalent) water enhancer into it. Been a staple for me also plain yoghurt is a good substitute for sour cream.

So many people do keto differently due to different health needs/issues. That being said, and you not being Keto you did a great job. I think I've realized that I am not buying to sales and also just buying the same stuff week after week regardless. This is actually a timely video because I really need to cut our grocery bill because it is going cuckoo.
