Thank you for this tutorial. Since I adopted your method, I don't feel in need of buying locking tuners any more! My guitars stay in tune very, very well.
Happy to know I'm not the only weirdo who double-backs their guitar strings. It makes a pretty nice spot for the strings to bind against themselves and let's you have less wraps for less slippage like a locking tuners. Locking tuners are still faster to swap strings with though, but with this technique, I don't mind too much one way or the other.

Very helpful. One area I'd like to hear about is how tight the tuner pegs should be. I've a MCCarty (non-locking pegs) that have a place for a flathead screw driver to fit. These black plastic tuner pegs can also be turned by hand. Sometimes it feels to me as if my tuners turn too easily, so I fear "string slippage". (I don't detect slippage, but the tuners sure are easy to turn.) Any thoughts?

Personally I leave enough slack to get 2 winds around the bass side and 4 or 5 around the treble. It doesn't lock it further it's to give downward pressure on the break angle to act like a string tree
I wonder how these non-locking tuners perform in terms of tuning stability. Can they handle a 5 semitone bend ? I wish mccarty 594 guitars came with locking tuners on the core and s2 lines...
For conventional tuners I usually stretch the string up to the next tuner, cut the excess off, pull it backwards till there's just a tip sticking out of the tuning post hole and wind it up. There's no need to bend and make a knot (although it is useful) if you hold it nicely and stretch the strings properly imo. Another great video
I’m not a fan of bending the string under to describe a knot. That technique is unnecessary and makes it more difficult to change the strings, when that time comes around.
@@GordonPavilion I'm not sure you read my comment but I've mentioned I do not bend the string under as I don't find it necessary... I hold it down to keep it from sleeping and let the windings "tie" the string around the tuning posts as the subsequent windings keep the bit that's fed through the tuning post hole in place. I don't use the so called "Luthier's Knot" on my guitars. Cheers
Why don’t they write which strings go on the guitar like other companies do. I just messed up again and wasted another set of PRS strings (the 3rd set). I loved the PRS guitars ( have 6 of them) but I’m going back to D’Addario for my strings
They expect some common-sense and individual ability to follow basic instructions when manufacturing strings. As for 'which strings go on which guitar' all electric guitars can have any electric guitar string, there are no specific strings for specific makes and model of guitar. Acoustic and nylon strings go on acoustic and classical guitars accordingly. Again, common sense and seeking guidance go a long way. It's not PRS' fault I'm afraid.
How about just stop making the non locking tuners? Besides that's the most confusing way to lock a non locking tuner, you can use the longer string side wrap it around the other end overwrap it above then you use the tuning key Ofc it's hard to explain in words

i used to have a lot of slack when i put on strings. I had never cut them and. The technique here is nicely done.

Thanks Skitchy! I used this method on my SE 24-08 and it is holding the tuning longer. So you can still teach an old dog news tricks ;-)
As soon as locking tuners come back (on production models) I’ll be making a purchase or two.
I’ve actually been swapping all of mine to nonlocking. They sound better to me.

Those 1,2,3rd string are confusing as hell every time I change string as a new prs neck type player
I’ve leaned all these years that high strings (G,B & E) should have minimum of full 5-6 turns. Am I correct?

The earlier 594s had the phase 3 locking tuners. The newer models with non locking stay in tune just fine.

Hey, which guitar is that. I have the same finish on my custom 24 se, but I have never seen it on another PRS guitar.

Anyone out there who can tell me why my new strings won't feed through my Custon 24-08 tremolo bridge?
Should have bent the string the opposite direction before clipping.
It is slightly less likely to slip and is more neat.

Why does PRS package their stings in a 6-3; 5-2; 4-1 grouping? Knowing PRS there must be some intelligent design in this ?😊
A lot of manufacturers do, it's to appropriately divide the tension on the guitar when re-stringing. :)

I always wrap from the inside of the tuning head to the outside. Thought that’s how it was always done. Always sounds perfect for me.
Cross it under on the inside then across the top, okay. I need that winder cause mine hits the headstock.

I just tried this for the 2nd and I'll NEVER string another guitar like this. There's always slack around the nut and it looks a little janky tbh...

You said to wind clockwise for the bass side, but, you clearly wound them counter clockwise..
