In dispatch six, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky travels to the Kherson region of mainland Ukraine to both the Ukrainian and Russian checkpoints. At the Ukrainian checkpoint, Simon goes inside one of their tanks, and speaks to the commander, who says that despite his Russian blood he will defend all invaders. But at the Russian checkpoint, the exchange isn't quite as cordial.

If that guard had any actual intention of shooting them, they would've been dead. Gunning those two down at that kind of close distance would've been beyond child's play. As Simon stated, they likely only survived due to the two of them being American and British nationals and the guards not wanting to stir up some kind of international incident.

For those, myself included, who haven’t closely followed the Russia/Ukraine conflict over the last decade, what an incredible point of reference to better understand the current conflict. 4:41 is a key moment in this video. This ethnically Russian soldier of the Ukrainian army dispels the entire myth that the Russian government uses to justify this entire invasion and war, that its supposedly being fought over language and the right of ethnic Russians to speak Russian. In reality it has nothing to do with that, and the majority of Ukrainian soldiers and volunteers fighting against Russian forces are Russian speakers themselves. Russia is trying to resurrect its empire by forcefully changing international borders, nothing more. The rest is smoke and mirrors.

This is antirussian propaganda sponsored by CIA and Western Ukrainian Bandera - fascists who with violence overturned legitimate government. I don’t say that all Western Ukrainians are fascists, but the fact is that right now Kiev and West Ukraine is ruled buy right wing militant Bandera - fascists and everybody is scared of them. So nobody in his right mind cannot blame Russian people in South-Eastern Ukraine for not wanting to live under the fascists rule from West Ukraine.
After all Russian and Russian speaking population are majority in South-Eastern Ukraine, so under the elementary rule of democracy they can chose how they want to live their life, so if they want to be independent and away from fascists we have to respect their decision. But unfortunately CIA doesn’t like democracy, they see this as chance make money by selling weapons and creating another war, so they can be paid and keep their jobs, as this is the only way they can survive, by CREATING THE WARS AND KILLING innocent people.
I hope soon will come a day when all world will stop believing in CIA propaganda and start living peacefully at every country in the world.

Even though these events happened a year ago, it's really interesting to watch it now, and it's still on the agenda. It is happening right now. Sure, we all read about it in the papers, but seeing this is better. Gonna' watch all the episodes. Keep up the great job.

    Simon and Freddy (Freddie? sp?),
You are both really amazing journalists for being where you are and being a part of VICE. Sure you're not in the Central African Republic being shot at like some of your other VICE reporters... but you're still in a high danger area and these events are important. Good job, you really really earned your pay and more this day and as a conscious American (not entirely proud American but American nonetheless) you have my deepest respect and admiration.
