Instead of thinking so hard on what you think you need or want to say, or focusing your emotions on seeking an audience of your own in order to contend, perhaps you could attempt humble prayer and reflection, and just quiet the storm in your own soul.
Your comment reminds me of the frequent statements I often hear from drug addicts, about how bad they want to focus on helping others who struggle when their own condition is shattered, bent or broken.

When I went to my bishop to talk about the problems in my marriage, he recommended I “humble” myself before my abuser and stop being so “smart”. Now I see that advice as a symbol of how I was raised in the church and how to maintain faith and loyalty to the organization. Just don’t think about it, take it and keep your opinions to yourself.
Part of my culture is being honest, sincere and very direct. It wasn't accepted well in the church.

I always hated the us vs them mentality. I am more accepting and non-judgmental now that I’m out. Wow, I think I’ve become more Christ-like being out of the church. How does that happen? The bash on cultures is cringe. That is what I love about this world! Different cultures need to be celebrated. I hate this talk so much!

Nemo I agree. I was a missionary kid growing up. Chinese Christians have a different culture than American Christians. That doesn’t mean that American Christianity is superior. This is a subaltern form of racism. It goes back farther than imperial colonialism, but today’s more western or American Christianity is a echo of it. In many ways I would say Chinese Christianity is superior because they are actually persecuted for their faith, where as the worst American Christians get is called names. Being called names is NOT the same as being tortured, imprisiobed or killed for your faith. I highly recommend the Heavenly Man about a Chinese Christian who suffered much persecution. This really is not surprising that many Mormon leaders think this way considering the history of racism and the fact that many American Mormons all dress, look, act and think the same.
Member from SINGAPORE here! I was in the Young Men when Elder Jackson served as the bishop of the expatriate ward in Singapore in the 90s. I too find this talk hypocritical. Although I heard that Bishop Jackson was a wonderful leader to his ward (of mostly American families working in Singapore), the expats did not really integrate/mingle with the local members. All the American kids would go to American/international schools. And since the American school and the local schools have differing holiday schedules, none of the expat YM/YW would attend youth conference with us locals. They pretty kept to themselves most of the time. To be fair, they have gotten rid of the expat ward in 2019.
I know that Indian family he spoke of in this talk. All of them except the wife/mother have already LEFT THE CHURCH!

I was forced to watch this with my family when it first aired. I was absolutely horrifeid that they swallowed it whole without seeing how harmful it really is. (Especially since the Deseret nationalists are a very real group, and I'm sure they loved this talk) I'm glad someone is addressing it, Thanks for this.

The Navajo children who were blessed to live in white Mormon home in order to go to school, became whiter and better looking then their browner siblings left on the he reservation per President Kimball.

This one is a real gem! This church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints leader, who claims to act from God is stating that anyone who doesn’t accept his church as the only church of God is spiritually nearside and ignorant.
Why am I not surprised a Mormon leader saying this?
Do these leader who claim to act in the name of God, not realize how offensive this is? The sad thing is this individual is not the first nor is he the last to be this blatantly irresponsible in their actions and words.

I remember listening to this talk and being like "yeah, the culture of Christ! We accept everyone!". The chur h teaches you to ignore other evidences that contradict what you're currently hearing. Now that I've taught myself this skill, the talk is so awful and has so many contradictions to what the actual church is like.
I can hardly ever listen to lds talks anymore, because there's always something in it that contradicts some other teaching or aspect of the church.
Someone recently described teaching church doctrine a whack-a-mole, that seems very apt!

@@NEMOTHEMORMON @NEMO To be totally honest, I loved BYU. I felt embraced by amazing people that I admired. But the moment I stopped believing, I realized the love they gave me had always been conditional. And I no longer met their criteria.
Felt like being the only vegan at a Korean BBQ restaurant lol. Of course there are exceptions to this, and people I still remain friends with.

I thought, hmm. I don't remember those teachings in the gospels. I should pay more attention.
But now it makes sense. They cannot imagine a better defender of women than what the bible says, because any greatest defense involves them thinking differently about women.

Watching these "apostles" and "prophets" talk is soooo creepy. I can't quite put my finger on it but something just seems sinister about it. It's a hive mind mentality where they believe they alone have all the answers and everyone must conform. It's disturbing.

One thing; Enoch was pre Abraham so he wasn’t part of the Jewish or Hebrew culture. It was first introduced to Abraham through circumcision then fully adapted in the Mosaic covenant.

I read the speech about how the church teaches to see dowry as in need of eradication because it interferes with young men saving for mission and paying tithing of 10%.
Will you please review the 2019 temple changes? It was clearly to hide sexism in church history.

So ironic that he espouses Mormon culture to be the greatest yet Mormons have to have talks/orientations about "Church culture vs Gospel Culture" lol, as if those two aren't one and the same. "Religious culture", the thing Jackson is talking about, here, is the very thing that defines "religiosity": which is not a good thing, at all!
Instead of "personal convictions", religious culture (i.e., Utah Culture and/or Mormon Culture) is based, largely, upon "conformity & uniformity".
ANYONE can "get with the program"-- whatever that 'program' is.
(Other corporations have their 'corporate culture', too: it is not unique to the LDS church.)
In my own opinion (based on many, many decades of both participation and, more importantly, 'observation', in the LDS church), I observed that 'fitting into' (i.e., conforming to) Utah Culture-- something that I was loathe to do, opting instead to be my own person, rather than becoming a dumbed-down groupie-- was the sure way of
being steeped in GROUP THINK and MEDIOCRITY: two substances that boil together in that witch's brew called "religiosity".
So, one "look" at G.A. (general authority) Jackson is truly about all I need, to determine his modus operandi (and what 'lives' in his mind and heart).

Thanks for pointing this talk out. I had no idea this was discussed. Hard to believe that talks like this are still given in conference. I can see what is his trying to talk about but to an outsider, the talk seems very insensitive and imperialistic. Imagine if this was given to a Jehovah's Witness congregation? I would bet that believing mormons dissecting that talk would say that its out of touch and insensitive.

Exmo of 52 years. This talk infuriates me. I've been to India twice in the last decade and find Hinduism fascinating, enlightening and wonderful. The Vedas from which Hinduism sprang, can be argued to be the scripture that all other scripture slowly developed from. Look at the parallels between the life outline of Krishna of Mathura and Jesus of Nazareth. It is astonishingly similar. Krishna lived 3,000 years before Jesus. Also hasn't India suffered enough political imperialism during Great Britains occupation? So now this tiny American church of arguably 16 million needs to convince the 1 billion plus, mostly Hindu, to change to a SUPERIOR "gospel?" Giving these people a BETTER pathway back to God? I am late to the game on this video and my apologies Nemo for that. This talk certainly proves one thing. The male leadership of the Mormon faith are arrogant and foolish.
6:41 I am new to your channel, and do not know where you are coming from, but if you care to read the New Testament, you will find that the concept of "the world" as distinct from the faithful, is a concept basic to Christianity, found in all forms of Christianity. It is not a uniquely LDS concept.
Of course, but as it is a teaching in LDS culture, he is incorrect to say there is no us vs them mentality. Where I am coming from is, i'm a member of the LDS church, and I am aware church leadership is not always honest. My goal is to call this out and try and help people be more informed. I will often make points about the LDS church which can also apply to broader christianity, however my area of knowledge is the LDS church. I welcome any feedback and i'm always looking to improve.

This was something I noticed while watching the video as well. LOVE this channel and all of the videos, by the way. I get excited every time a new one pops up! I grew up in a Christian home & have never been LDS. But I have been married to a Mormon for 5 years. His entire family is actively LDS as well. I’m the odd one out 🙂
Not being ‘of the world’ was a concept I was familiar with during my childhood. I never interpreted it as an ‘us against them’ point. But rather a matter of focusing on eternity instead of being caught up with the drama of every day life. It was about maintaining a broader perspective of all that is to come in the afterlife. I suppose not being ‘of the world’ also related to people recognizing something unique about Christians & hopefully being drawn to the cause of those differences.

It is common to every religion or ideology that makes a universal appeal to speak of the greater value of their tenets and to incorporate elements of other cultures which they see to be consistent with them. Do you critique other international religions and movements, or are you just anti-Mormon?
I'm not anti-mormon, that much should be clear. In my professional life I critique and examine people, to help treat their medical needs, does that make me anti-people? Similarly, just because I critique the LDS church in order to create a culture of honesty, does not mean I am anti-mormon.
I've always felt like the grandest aspect of the Church is showcased in every sacrament meeting hymn and each monotonal dulcet tone. His talk was a bit delusional.

The Church does not teach a 6,000 year old creation of the earth. The Church teaches that Adam left the Garden of Eden approximately 6,000 years ago.
That is even off , so how old is the earth? Bishop Ushers addition of generations in Genesis is assuming they are complete, not so , just an example Jesus is called the son of David!

Trained in Cultural Anthroplogy I found this nauseating. If you use the same cultural argument then you can argue that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not a true restoration of the New Testament Church since it differs in many different ways. The words: apostle,, bishop, and Christ are Greek words and that is just talking about linguistics. The concept of "the other" , historically is an "us" versus "them" mentality. For example, in the 1800s, under Brigham Young, the Church considered everyone else a "gentile" and not of Israel. There was no need to even claim that the Church is the "greatest culture" in this talk. The only time that Jesus came close to ethnocentricism was in declaring to the Samaritan woman: "Salvation is of the Jews". Thus, without Jesus, a Jew, none on this Earth would be saved. So I guess Jewish Culture would be the greatest since Judaism gave us Jesus who worked out the atonement for all mankind. Man, was this talk off the mark.
Now imagine what it was like in the early 70s. Priesthood ban of course but American exceptionalism ruled

Self righteous American Christianity hasn’t changed all that much from many of the ideals in the video, I think at least.
My interpretation of this talk seems to be very different from what you got from it. Elder Jackson is talking about what the culture of Christ should be or an ideal for us to strive for. So... Zion, a people of one heart, and one mind. This has been the goal since the beginning of Mormonism. I don’t believe he’s saying the current church culture is the culture of Christ or the ideal.

There might not be a whole lot of fact-checking that can be done in this video, but I feel that they go very surface level when talking about the symbols in the temple.

This is so difficult to listen to. It's been many years since I watched any significant portion of a general conference talk. Frankly, the lies and cultural ignorance in this speech made me a little ill.
I don't think this general conference guy knows what culture is :P In his talk he seems to be confusing the rules that govern an organization/corporation with culture, and they're not really the same thing.
Academically speaking, it's actually quite difficult to define what culture is, or to find its boundaries. Where does one culture end and another begin? It's impossible to tell, because culture exists on a spectrum. There are also cultures within cultures, from the micro (e.g. the culture of one particular immediate family) to the macro (e.g. the culture of a country or even whole continent).
Imo there's no such thing as "the original culture" because culture isn't a definable, tangible entity with clear boundaries that exists singularly. It's a massively interwoven product of human social interaction which spans the entire planet and is always in flux, constantly changing and moving.

Although Mormon claims have no evidence to support them, it's important to acknowledge that there are good things in Mormon culture, for example, strong families.
Regardless of the weirdness of the religion, the culture and emphasis on strong families, is more likely to produce productive, stable, individuals who are not drink and drug dependent, and who show kindness to others.

Unfortunately there are some who are unable to see any good in mormonism at all. It would SO help them if they could, as this would make them feel better.
A classic example of a man who could not forgive the Mormons was Ed Decker, an ex Mormon. He was not content to label mormonism as wrong; lt had to be evil, satanic and completely destructive,( when In reality, mormonism is better than the general population in some areas.) He ended up making a video featuring false charges about Gordon B Hinckley's private life, with other false charges, and in doing so destroyed his own reputation.

If their claims were “we are a good church” I’d concede to your opinion but when the culture screams “we are the only true church” that’s unhealthy no matter how you look at the rest of the culture.
@@ajadamsv9208 I agree. I think the values are right, but the price members have to pay to be in this community of, generally very caring people, is to believe the unbelievable. This must take it's toll. To believe in the face of the evidence could be harmful. The church needs to reform, and to stop placing this burden upon people. I think they may drop this "only true church" stuff, but it will take a long time.

Christ's religion is different than his culture. The two are not the same thing. I can have any culture on earth and still follow any religion just fine. The speaker even confirms that at the end of his talk about his Indian friend.
But in his talk he’s conflating the religion and culture of the LDS church, at least to my mind. I think yours is the healthier viewpoint, but I don’t see it in the talk. Thanks for the feedback!

Z Cs I don’t think that is a confirmation that they are separate, he’s saying that the Indian gentleman didn’t have to give up his culture to join the church, but this in and of itself does not create a differential between the religion of Christ and the culture of Christ, if you see what I mean?

The problem is that religion and culture are not the same thing. The speaker doesn't get that and claims they have the superior culture which is the religion of Jesus. It is in my opinion not even close to the religion of Jesus when Jesus was a monotheist and this religion is as polytheistic as Hinduism and other religions. And, it is not the culture of Jesus either. Where did Jesus claim that the laws in the book of Mormon or the D and C are from God? Only Joseph Smith makes that claim. And his claims contradict what is in the words of Jesus.

I think there is a bit of either ignorance of worldly biased against the idea of what constitutes a culture in this video. you are comparing the tendencies and beliefs that accompany the gospel as if it is a worldly or man made culture, when the LDS church knows that those things are bred from eternal principles in existence from long before the world was. it is as if you are trying to make the gospel principles and the teachings and beliefs surrounding it out to be nothing more than an ethnic or traditions culture perpetuated by those who were raised in them, only for the sake of remembering their forefathers. I simply do not agree with your shallow connection of the two very different types of cultures as if they are on the same level. Mormonism has a culture within that is not the same or even reflective of that ancient culture derived from eternal principles. Jewish/Hebrew culture also. the point is that there is a common tread of cultural beliefs and tendencies that are the same throughout all time among people who espouse the eternal truths and principles of Godliness. and thus I think this critique was off the mark. it was almost as if you were arguing against a straw man that was not actually being presented in the talk.

It is not my job to address your particular interpretation of the talk, but the talk as it is presented. @@NEMOTHEMORMON I guess what I am saying is that you are implying motivation of deceit or malice of the speaker, based on your biased view of the topic. you are looking for fault thus you read fault into the intentions and words of the speaker. interpretation is a factor yes, but you are adding to what he actually says, when you associate your own understanding of "culture" with his mentions of it. and that is why I point out that he is clearly speaking of the culture of eternal truths woven through all righteous groups/peoples. and calling that culture a culture of Christ, knowing that it is Christ who works closely with and among al of those separate groups, even with there separate worldly cultures.
Ultimately, if you seek for issues you will find them. not because they are actually there, but because you will twist and manipulate the implied and intended narrative to be one of malice, hatred, control, etc.
I am on your side in many ways. I see that the culture of the church isn't perfectly in line with eternal truths, and even some policies aren't geared toward the eternal end the church claims to be seeking. But I don't think it is helpful to read into things ill intent where there clearly is none. doing that takes it too far and shows that you'd rather have content to release, than be on the side of truth.

Cultural Mormonism is one of the sickest things I have ever experienced in the Salt Lake Valley the passed 13 years. Everything my evanglical Christian friends would say about being brainwashed and just being blindly led hits the mark in Utah when it comes to Mormonism. I don't fit in in the the UT church, and I never will since I practice the culture of Christianity and not Mormonism.
