@nemo - great video! One callout is I think many in the post Mormon community are misinterpretting the social listening job post. These are common corporate marketing jobs. Basically it’s high level analysis of social media sentiment using common marketing tools (e.g. church is a corporation)

It's too bad they didn't think me important enough to keep an eye on. Since discovering that the church was built on lies, I've lived up to my Patriarchal Blessing's promise of leading "many people to the truth." Too bad for them, the truth isn't on their side. I'm proud to have been an example to numerous friends, family, and many others who have told me over the years that my example of leaving due to my dedication to the truth helped encouraged them to leave the Mormon church themselves. I don't take full credit for anyone else leaving; honest introspection comes foremost from within. But I am happy to know that my example and my words encouraged others in their own journeys out of the trap of Mormonism.

If someone is saying disparaging comments about you and is potentially damning - regardless of validity, you ignore it? If it was about me personally then possibly, but as an institution?? Wouldn't you want to dive deeper to see if it's true and potentially correct it?
Yes, I think I would want to dive deeper. I guess what I was trying to say is I really really wish that the church leaders would choose strict honesty and transparency.

Clearly, this video was made to rile people up against the church - to make the church seem even more "secretive and nefarious". Even the spokesman of the church was caught off guard since it isn't a really well known committee. If you know anything about the church we claim to follow Jesus Christ. That is the culture and the entire structure of the organization. If you know Him, you know who working to emulate.
If there is a spreadsheet with individuals names who regularly attack the church. Neat. They should probably have a chat with their bishop to resolve the issue. No need to generously spread misinformation. @@grantbeck9228

This is why I submitted my resignation. Through Quitmormon, the letter says not to contact me about anything to do with the Church.
I feel bad that this church has great potential to grow, create a loving community, and create an amazing culture but the people on top consistently ruin it for every one

I loved Holland when I was an active member. I thought the world of him…this small clip, on top of all of the “musket” talks, has left me completely bewildered and disappointed. His deflection and straight up twisting of truth is crazy to me. He’s simply not being honest and forthright. To say he doesn’t know anything because he’s not on that committee???? He’s an apostle!!! He knows and he lied.
He would have been much better off just saying “that’s not a subject I wish to discuss”

I've heard that the Bishop is required to have a portfolio folder on each member of the ward, which contains information about him/her, such as if they have ever been disciplined, among other things.
I was in a bishopric from May 1990 to November 1992. They didn't do that then, but that was 30+ years ago. I resigned in 2018
There is so little information about the inner workings of the church and they always act so offended when they are asked about it.

It's one reason I left. All my life, I was told the church could withstand any kind of criticism, but then, with the rise of the internet, they started saying not to look for answers about the church online. It begged the question, what is it they don't want us to find?

My LDS mother got so paranoid about this a couple of years ago that when she went for her temple recommend she told her bishop - when asked the question of association with groups - that I was now an ex Mormon and therefore fell under that category - association by being her child.

So if members of the church actually believe it’s true and there are actual consequences throughout eternity you want them to leave you alone?
@@spencersessions that’s exactly the point of my post. They only say something about me. They don’t actually say anything to me. They feel good about gossiping and sitting in their useless meetings and not doing anything.
The direction they have been given regarding these discussions is to identify ways to help you (and anyone else) feel included and to find the right people who have the same interests/hobbies as you. Perhaps someone knows there's a financial need. When this is mentioned it is handled with compassion only by the bishop. No further discussion is needed as a council regarding that issue.
The discussion isn't to gossip, and if done, the bishop should have the wherewithal to remove that individual from these discussions or their position.
If someone doesn't follow through and reach out to you that's on them, not you. There should not be any intention of matching people so they'll be "saved" but rather help you feel a part of the community and allow you to make a decision based on what YOU truly want. Community is important to all of us. We are finding ways to improve it. @@williamwallaceg2627

I’ve had family ask why I wouldn’t at least want to still take my kids to primary so they learn about Jesus/good morals…because I want them to have the freedom to choose when they are old enough to understand!

Ok, so it was a few years ago now. I had been corresponding with Bobby Gilpin in the UK who had been doing some lectures to Christian groups about Mormonism. Bobby included a summary of story of exiting Mormonism.
After some time I caught up with Bobby and he told me about an email exchange he had with someone who provided him private information about me that only a Bishop would know. This person who provided the information, presented negatively as character assignation, was meant to provide pressure on Bobby to remove my story. The person pretended to know me referring to me as Mike. I am not a Mike but a Michael and no one, no friends for example call me Mike but this person pretending to not know me and harm me did. I had Bobby send me the email and I tried with an acquaintance to trace the email address. It was. It traceable. Neither was it contactable. It seems that someone had both been monitoring Bobby’s website and taking action to manipulate it.
Please do a video on the September Six. I was at BYU at the time but no one ever mentioned it. I had to leave Utah to learn about them.

While preparing the documentary John Sweeney came to an ex Mormon group and asked I have an interview with an apostle tomorrow what question should I ask. I was in that ex-mormon group and suggested he ask about the strengthening the members committee to him my.

When I was a clerk, the higher-level handbook of instructions (not the lower one given to auxiliary leaders) was only available in the bishop's office or the clerk's office, and not for perusal by just anybody. Nowadays, they change it so much that the printed version isn't even used anymore, and LDS Tools makes it easy to restrict access to anything.

No hidden vault, no secret books, no mystical conversations. The only thing I can think of is that you didn’t know what you were doing. My dad was a clerk for many years and the only things locked up were the personal records of those in the ward. There are different clerks and you didn’t have access to tithes and donations, I guess. They made a good call on that

I was the ward clerk and had access to everything (except what only the bishop could see, like annotations on records). I simply said that there was a handbook of instructions that was not as general as the one that auxiliary leaders get (this was about 10 years ago). Maybe you should make an effort to avoid getting up on the wrong side of the bed, or whatever the matter with you is today. 🤣

I think we have a tendency to assume the worst from any church organizations (not without good reason). But I think it's important to remember that church can collect data on its members, be informed of potential schisms, and use data to formulate plans that affect a variety of church goals and procedures. The main issue I have behind the SCMC like many of the church segments are
1. Lack of transparency
2. Lack of consent
I think this sort of organization could have benefits if say, a sexual predator posts about how to use youth activities to get close to children, an organization or individuals are intentionally using the name and authority of the church for unauthorized activities, or something similar.
It should not be used for activities and voices that criticize the church unless espousing false claims of authority (ie Elder Ballard said you should do x, y or z - I'm looking at you Tim B.), be used to get non public information, or intend to manipulate the private lives of its members and doctrinal adherence. Spiritual autonomy should be respected.
I'm curious if there's been a study of how many members have received church discipline based on reporting from the SCMC, and how much of that reporting was done fairly, accurately and appropriately

Great video. It is ironic that D Todd Christofferson was, or still is, a member of the SCMC. He was a law clerk to the US district court judge that oversaw the Watergate hearings and together they were the first people to listen to the Watergate tapes. I wonder what he learned from that experience that he carried over to the SCMC?

The Purge meets the SCMC (strengthening church members committee). But instead of one day of death and crime a year it's now 365 days of church discipline and excommunication. We are living the movie adaptation.
Check out the terms and conditions on the LDS apps, that allow them access to all your other phone data and that it can be used against you in a disciplinary council. Crazy!
Not on iPhone - you have to specifically allow the app to access any personal data the church doesn't already have (ex: location, contacts)

When I was growing up in Idaho Falls, ID, I was a member of the 33rd Ward of the Idaho Falls West Stake. Elder Shane Bowen was my teacher's quorum instructor and Varsity Scout advisor during the two years that I was a teacher in the Aaronic priesthood. Knowing his outside job and church callings, him being on the committee only makes sense since he knows how to properly organize and gather data on people.
