I am 70. I am not, nor have I been on any meds my entire life. I had a hypertensive crisis out of the blue. The doctor put me on medication. I asked if I could eventually get off of it. He said no, I would be on it for the rest of my life. I thought, no I know my body better then you do and I do not want you and your nurses to become my new best friends. Long story short - better diet and exercise, BP is normal without med.

The fact that doctors take a guess at a dosage, and then tell you to come back in 3 to 6 months is a shame. Most medication needs its dosage adjusted, but doctors see you as often as your insurance company says they should.

2 years ago I went into an ER for a simply neck muscle strain. Muscle relaxers and a mild pain killer was all I needed.
The physician asked what medications I was taking. "None" I said. I was 68 at the time. He asked twice...surprised that I wasn't the prescribed meds carousel. Nope.. He almost looked disappointed. This country is grossly overmedicated. That's for sure.

You're exactly right. And when you are prescribed a pain medication, why oh why, do they prescribe 60 pills???? In most cases, it's something that Aleve can handle. I had shoulder surgery for calcific tendinitis 9 months ago. I was given a script for pain meds but I did not get it filled. I don't take any meds either and I am 68. I saw both my parents become overmedicated, but that generation did exactly what their doctors told them to do and did not question anything. Putting the soap box away now.

At 48 years old I take no prescriptions and the PA seemed like she was offended by the fact.
It was almost as if she was threatening that I won't pass my physical next year if I don't go get on BP meds.
My mother was on BP meds for 20 years and ended up with heart failure because staten drugs weaken the heart over the course of 20 years. At least that's what her cardiologist told her.

We know corporations have held our government for a long time, maybe since the industrial revolution even. How much of what we read in a history textbook mass produced by a global corporation can we believe now, knowing what we know now?

I'm going through this right now. I'm 69 and on zero medications. My dr was concerned about my cholesterol levels even though i have no symptoms, and sent me to a Cardio. He immediately prescribed statins, aspirin, an echo cardiogram, after that a catheterization and a higher dose of statins after 30 days. I told him I had been doing the Keto diet for thee last 6 months and it generally raises cholesterol levels. I mentioned that high cholesterol by itself does not indicate heart disease and statins, while effective at lowering chol, do not necessarily prevent heart disease or events, and that I do not want to take them. He snapped back that if I wouldnt take them then "what are we doing here"?
We never got around to (and he never asked) about my previous horrible experience on statins 5 years ago. And he never brought up the role of arterial inflammation, or the role of the two types of LDL which affect lipids forming blockages, or if there are any indicators to determine these symptoms. I didn't even get to ask about the tradeoff of possible kidney disease because of long term statin use and lower cholesterol, or if any alternative actions could be taken.
It was the mindless robotical procedure of statins-aspirin-catheterization-stent based on his decision at time of catheterization...and then I guess a lifetime of pharmaceuticals to make the stent effective. I was shocked that he almost got mad at me for asking questions, although he denied he was angry when I pressed him.
Sorry about the long rant but that visit has me more upset than the thought of a possible heart failure. There's no excuse for today's doctors not to know about the studies of the last decade showing the treatments of the 80s and 90s are not absolute when it comes to heart disease.

She is just realizing the crazy truth about actual care vs. regulated care. Actual care is doing what is best for the patient, whereas regulated care is doing what is best for the patient by adhering to certain criteria demanded by the Healthcare Insurance Companies and Big Pharma.
Compounded Pharmaceuticals are AMAZING and can actually cure and heal issues that patients have rather than simply mediating symptoms people have until their bodies are able to cure or heal themselves.
The problem is with finding suitable, reputable, and knowledgeable Compound Pharmacists to give out these drugs. There is no "Real School" for Pharmacists to attend to teach them about Compound Pharmaceuticals and what is best for the patients. You have to remember, that these Pharmacists are literally mixing two or more compounds to create a "custom medication" for each patient. There are few if any "guides" to doing this and each individual can react differently to the compounds and dosages. Many states have heavy and crazy regulations regarding Pharmacy Compounding.
There are "Sterile Compounds" such as eye drops used before eye surgeries such as cataract surgery, infusions, and injections and must be created in special areas to allow for sterile compounding.
There are also "Non-Sterile Compounds" such as creams, capsules, and suppositories where the risk of infection is low so the same precautions taken while mixing Sterile Compounds are not required.
It doesn't help that in earlier years it was the "crazy hippies", "naturalists", and "herbal doctors" pushing and in some cases, acting as a Compounding Pharmacist.
The massive regulations put on Compound Pharmacies and Pharmacists are why more of them are not around. There are very restrictive regulations put on by both the Federal Govt. and each State Govt. which seem to be much more restrictive than those placed on Big Pharma.

Hi Christy. I have worked in healthcare for almost 30-years, mainly medical devices. An increasing issue with diagnostic instruments is coping with the poly-pharma or cocktail of drugs a patient is using and how to ensure the device only reads the marker of interest. We are often told that this is due to the increasing aging population. However, the numbers do not support this statement. What does make sense is doctors prescribing more drugs to existing and new patients depending upon their healthcare insurance.

The "Medical Profession"... I call "HA!" Fall out of a tall tree while chain sawing a thick branch, break 7 ribs and also puncture a lung and the medical profession are true heroes, and they're there for you. Need ANY medication(s) at all and you're simply a lab rat for experimentation(s) so the profession personnel can get "free training" Every "medication" I've ever needed came with "side-effects" included with them, oh, but the doc had another pill to help with that! My body felt sick from taking that FIRST pill for a natural reason though, it had been warning me of danger! I shouldn't need a second pill to stop a first pill from trying to hurt me. Doctors hide the truths they know. You have to drill them with questions to ever find out anything, and even then they hem and haw and never come out with the whole truth involved. Then, there's the part where they WILL ask some questions, such as "How you doing?" and "Got anything else to share with me?" They don't just go by the reason you came to them, and that's because for every "answer" you give, there's a check box on the reimbursement form and checking those boxes makes them money. Or, it might make them a cut of "I didn't spend insurance money, I saved it instead" money from that same insurance company.

The money to made on these meds is insane and the big pharm producers know it so they will likely spare no expense to see everything is done exactly to their desire. I worry we won't see real data on long term effects until 10's of millions have used these and the damage is already done. These drugs are almost being sold as a miracle fix and we all know there is no such thing without a big price to pay, and I don't mean the cost per unit but cost on the body.

There does seem to be a determined campaign to outlaw clinical judgement, especially in the US. I am British, but I've got a friend in Texas, formerly married to a surgeon, and her physician recently put her on the new medication "Repatha" (I think that's the spelling) to reduce her blood cholesterol levels, which it very quickly did, to the point where she tested "nil" even for some of the essential lipids that she actually needs, leading to chronic tiredness and fainting fits.
Her physician _asked permission_ to reduce her dose or, since that would have meant asking the pharmacy to _alter the dose in an injection vial_ simply give her the drug less frequently. Not only did the drug manufacturer flat out refuse: it transpired that if she declined further doses my friend might lose her insurance status!
I don't think it's as bad as that here, yet, but then I'm not in Scotland where there's a criminal complaint in the works about covid policy in care homes and anything might be possible.
Oddly, this policy was exactly the same as that in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, New York State, California etc. This is most odd, because as Tracey Ullman once said: "if you're in the Scottish National Party you can't be seen to agree with anyone."

I think you pounded that nail in with the fewest strikes. I know that pharma companies are key to conference design and management, but they do great work and produce what would in earlier times be considered miraculous substances. Insurers, by contrast, offer no value to health-conscious consumers and impart negative value to what might become constructive dialog between physicians and their patients. A person simply rolls the dice on healthcare options, and while the payment system and cost/benefit analysis of treatment options is wrestled continually in legal and administrative orbits, there is apparently no interest in a single patient's or single physician's anecdotal reports or alternative methods.
"Oh sure, if it's free and common sensical, I won't advise otherwise; but, let's keep that between us and off of your clinical paths report."

@@reensure One effect of the UK's National Health Service (funded by income tax and National Insurance* payments) which most Americans do not know about, is that not only is private medical care a _little bit_ cheaper in the UK, private _medicines_ tend to be orders of magnitude cheaper. I know one lady who spends six months of her year in the UK and six months in FLA. She was charged $400 for a small tube of steroid skin cream in FLA which, she knew, would have cost her £5 in any branch of Boots or Lloyds in the UK. And in FLA she had to ask a doctor (who barely knew what it was for) to prescribe it for her, whereas in the UK it's OTC.
In effect, the drug suppliers and the doctors are both taking their cut of the available insurance money.

I'm 46 my old high school buddy is about the same age.
The real difference between us is that he has a veritable cocktail of pills to take every day, like my 80 year old dad and I don't have any to take at all.
Of course he went to see a doctor for some reason when I only go see a doctor to get something removed. What a grift.

I went through immunotherapy backin in 2015-2016, with collateral damage to my thryroid and was put on synthroid for life. Consulted with a licensed, non-vegan, hippie nutritionist who recommeneded an effectively if not branded organic lifestyle with lots of fermented foods and some natural supplements and who directected me to a natural farm that had a booth in the downtown farmers market. Girl in the booth was 28, in great shape and had been on synthroid from 8 to 18, her prime hormone upheaval years. Soon as she graduated, she moved into a yurt on an organic farm where she got good meat and veggies and supplemented with dessicated beef thyroid glands. She has pizza maybe once a month. 6 years and one pandemic late, I go in for an overdue checkup with thyroid specific bloodwork and they told me that my thyroid levels are perfectly fine. I hated the drugs side effects and wanted to be off as many as possible. I was told that synthorid is the #1 druge for life in America. Well, incidental only, but here are two examples in defiance of that.

Because being healthy is not profitable. Just watch television and watch them show you ad after ad for fast food, and then immediately following is a big pharma ad on drugs for obesity. It’s all right in your face. This is why one should mute the ads.
