Wow exxy. Tesco 3 quid meal deals and Spoons pubs were a lifesaver during my previous time in London. I'm hoping I can live a little bit more during my next stint there though, lol.
This is an interesting video, and good to see the places you went. One of the great things about London is the amount of options you have for just about everything!
In the ‘60’s when I lived in Scotland they went around with a van with an aerial on it to to determine which flat had a tv. They could come inside and check too!
Looking at this (as usual, excellent) video from L&L, what strikes me is the amount of money spent on fast-food / coffees, rather than making sandwiches at home, flasks of coffee, etc. It's the liitle, incremental, day-after-day expenses that REALLY add up - and it's scary when you total it for the year. Yikes! That said, it's up to everyone how they spend teir day-to-day money - I do respect that.
That TV licence is such a deep burn when you get reminded of it 🤯 we make sure to watch nothing but BBC and Channel 4 that whole week after paying that huge annual amount! More expensive than Netflix and Amazon Prime!! 🤣😂
Love love! I had to take notes of all the amazing eats and drinks places. How will I hit all the amazing places in the amount of time I will be there?! Side note, also love how you include talk of sustainability and issues that are near to my heart. Added bonus :)
Wow! So far this year I've changed at $1.40, $1.39 and the next looks like being $1.42. I seem to remember dollars being much cheaper back in 2008 though. I also had my first ever strawberry daquiries here in the US a few weeks ago - never tried them living in the UK.
@@jas88cam The first time I was in London was the first year Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister!! I think it was 1984!! Inflation was WAY out of control over there & one way that was tried to SLOW it down was by messing with Import Tariffs. This backfired on them in a major way. If you're in London just ask your parents if they remember that huge 'digital' sign that was in a very prominent place there that showed their National Debt in real time!!
@@marthaross6301 My first trip was in 84 and we would spend most of the summers and other holidays until the late 90s. My dad worked about half in the UK and half in Texas. I remember back when Thatcher was first elected they had this huge electronic sign up that showed their National Debt in real time. They had a huge problem there in the 70s & 80s with uncontrolled debt and inflation. It was similar to what America was going through & Thatcher pulled them out of it just as Reagan did for us. Part of their problem is they kept the Pound artificially high & that really hurt trade.
Lovely life. I don't have life of calling to meet friend for a coffee at all. That's sad. I will try to connect with friends. Thanks for reminding me. Love all of your videos. Greeting from Thailand.
Loved seeing you visit Victoria park village. I used to live there around 15 yrs ago and loved it. Believe it or not it was an old Victorian house that was turned into a Buddhist community (houseshare) and only paid £60 per week! Bang on the village!
Fun video Jess....it was neat to see what you spent which I didn't think was too bad given being in London. Some things were cheaper than what I thought they would be lol
The icecream sandwiches did look good. I love London and New York because there are so many of those types of one-of-a-kind things that are so special. Asian cities have unique things too but sometimes I can't get past the looks of them.
I've noticed that compared to the US, groceries are really a lot less expensive, but (depending on the place) restaurants are quite pricy. Thank you for having the currency conversion for us. £6 sounds ok but then seeing $8.50 makes me go, 🤔.
Really interesting video Jess. It kind of reminds me how expensive it was working and going out in London. Certainly in the suburbs you can eat like a king for a lot less. Im pleased you seem settled in your new place and producing new content. Just out of interest have you seen any of the reaction videos Americans do to British Comedies? That would be some great content for you to do while we start to open up London to the world. You get British humour too.
You spend a lot of money on eating out? I need to go back through your video and add up what it would be for me to live there because I must eat gluten-free so my options would probably be more limited. Also, I don’t drink so that would drop the price per day for me. Also, why did the socks cost so much?
I've bought plane tix from LA to London in October do you think it will be possible? Also I'm going to rewatch your videos about the markets and visit them
Loved the video:) I’m from Los Angeles and I spent nearly 3 months over the lockdown in London. One thing I noticed is food shopping is cheaper there than in CA, but the cost of a nicer apartment there is $$$$. Overall I’d say London prices are comparable to LA depending on your lifestyle.
Venezuelan food is good food, hahaha. Cachapas with fresh cheese are the best! The dish with pulled beef is called Pabellon and the drink is Papelón con Limón, cheers
I spent £100 only per week having lived in London for two years LOL (excluding rent) so you can actually live on the cheap and still eat out once or twice a week!
Hi Jess . Thanks for sharing . I found the breakdown of your weekly spending very interesting . As an ex pat living in Vancouver , Canada I would love to have internet and cell phone ( mobile phone ) bills that low ! BTW , 31 is not old ! Some of us would love to be able to turn back the clock to that age LOL ! More cost comparison videos please . I know you've done some before like the ones about the high end apartments . Last time in London my daughter and I took a stroll through Harrods ( touristy I know ) and saw a man's jacket that cost more than our entire 4 week vacation and I was spending money like a drunken sailor ( my choice ) , no disrespect to sailors who like a drink intended !
hahaha no respect to sailors 🤣 Yes we're really lucky here that phone and internet are pretty affordable compared to other countries! Thanks for watching Colin.
My cellphone was cheap in the UK, but remember making calls *to* a cellphone from a landline can be expensive - that's where they made a lot of money early on (sometimes the wrong side of £1 per minute!) Broadband can be cheap there, or it can be good; I've stayed in some rentals with really dire broadband. Excited about Google Fiber coming here in September though: 1 Gbps for $70/month. (Unless Mediacom's lawsuit gets anywhere...)
This weekend is going to be all Black-owned businesses, you should go check it out! Best time is earlier rather than later. Make sure you get a free ticket.
What about supermarket shopping costs for home meals including breakfast and occasional home cooking (assuming you don’t eat every meal out or on delivery) ?
As a minimalist, I could handle most of the bills as mentioned here I could do without the TV for I stream more among other internet use and now that London is opening back, I would be outdoors more but doing it on the cheap(if not for free).Food? Not a problem. So my biggest bill will be Rent. 😇
This (like all your videos) was most entertaining and informative. I spent 7 days in London in October-November 2018 and am hoping to come back again someday! (My profile picture is a selfie I took on the Beatles' bench on the grounds of St. Pancras Old Church.)
I know it’s expensive in London, been a few times but £41 for a pair of socks is crazy, I’ve bought top quality walking socks for less. Though your spend may seem a lot for most of the country, for London that’s quite conservative is have thought. Ok so more Central London and not North London where for many that’s a monthly spend
