Thank you so much, Paul - extremely enlightening and clarifying. I do think it's interesting how these differing approaches lead to similar outcomes via different paths - planarity emerging from roundness, form emerging from colour-value units and vice versa - but with subtle yet significant differences in outcome. Email incoming re the Tarbell essay!
Any books you can rec for understanding value in painting specifically? I have a strong pull towards painting landscapes but find myself doing lots of portraits instead 😂
no, Carlson, Birge Harrison, Payne, Dow... and of course Speed, Solomon, come to mind but can't say really. might look at Anson Cross' Drawing and Painting Self-taught, for starters. Look at my video about my landscape drawings?
Ingres more or less worked in the same way Raphael did, that is, by painting over a rather tight preliminary drawing on his canvas did he not? And is that not the kind of thing you sometimes refer to as a "colored drawing"? Just trying to understand where youre coming from. I would also like to read the essay on Tarbell. Thank you for sharing this valuable information with us, it is very much appreciated!
mostly, like with other elements, remember Brackman's: "It's just dis ta dis and dat ta dat." Helps to use your eyes in different ways when trying to understand values.
