As I am beginning your program series, which, as of Jan 2023 is over 330 videos, I am getting very excited about learning more and understanding relationship in painting. I’ve personally taken up painting because of my interest in understanding the magic behind good landscape painting. Prior to starting these videos, I would often look out at the beauty of nature and been overwhelmed with emotion. That emotion creates so much chaos in my perception of the view at hand. Where to begin? Lol. I am looking forward to the new spring as it arises, focusing differently, noticing the lightest lights, the darkest darks, and pulling in colors, angles… all those relationships you talk about… putting them down on canvas. This methodology of visual order really gives me new hope -being able to corral this wild emotion and get some semblance of order and control. Thank you.

I like this quote attributed to Fechin which I think express the idea of the visual order or simply the reality of personal visual experience which has nothing to do with style but just that pursuit of truth and beauty:
“To me, technique should be unlimited... [with] constant growth in ability and understanding. It must never be mere virtuosity but an endless accumulation of qualities and wisdom... First comes the initial idea for a work - what the artist desires to portray, to bring into concrete manifestation. In order to fulfill this task, he must begin to build, to organise."
    Nicolai Fechin
I dont know whether Paul still reads these comments but it would interesting to hear his take on what he thinks Fechin was doing in comparison to the Boston School painters.

Paul, I was wondering if the studies with Mr. Gammell included watercolor and pastel techniques. It was a very nice coincidence to find this video because you pointed out in Sargeant`s watercolors many things highlighted by Gammell and the Boston School's "method", let's say. Do you think watercolor is a medium which is possible to apply all these principles? I'm not a painter. But my whole life I drewd because I like it very much. And I still playing with my watercolors for hobby. But I take things very seriously and to watch all your videos brings me a new way of seeing painting, from a different and lucid point. I think this is an interesting corner, when things start being connected answering many questions that one never could find on expressing the view of beauty and attempts to do reach it. Thank you from the heart!

Hi Paul, thank you for these great videos.
Question: to what extent can impressionists invent, reinvent or exaggerate what's in front of them? Now that I look at Monet's paintings, some of the colours look "beyond real". I also imagine painters rearranging what they see in nature so that it makes a better picture on their canvas. Please shed some light...

Is the visual order an element in nature that lures our senses closer to beauty?

It is a compelling, empowering reality, The unity of the impression absolutely depends on it.
