Banshees was brilliant, one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. McDonagh, Farrell, Gleeson, and Keoghan were brilliant as usual. The movie was nominated for 9 Oscars and it was treated so flippantly on Oscars night. Like seriously, you don’t have to win any trophies but treat it with some goddam respect! - I don’t have even a fraction of Irish ancestry but understand great art when I see it
@@dani.892 To me, it’s a sign of the impact of Everything Everywhere that it beat Banshees in almost every category. There were real contenders this year.
@@Fake_Robot The Guard is another good one, It's only by McDonagh and Gleeson though. Again way better than banshees. Also I think Kerry Condon seems to be getting no recognition and she was best part of the movie!
Here's the thing, it's a stereotype and in this woke area it's very hypocritical. Imagine for a minute this was mocking Black, Asian or Hispanic people. My husband isn't "half" Irish, his parents were both from Ireland. I can't tell you how much grief he gets for not liking potatoes or drinking. (People assume he's a recovering alcoholic). While we aren't the type to bitch about it it does make us shake our heads why Irish stereotype is acceptable.
For peace of mind and well-being, it is best to just let it go. Read what Budha says about people who try to insult. Sometimes people say things but have no bad intention. Most of the time, I just do not tune into people making fun of others. I just was not exposed to such growing up - rather sheltered. Slainte.
This kinda cheap and intellectually low gagging shows more about the deliverer than it does the subject. Us Irish are so over being thought of as big thick stupid and drunk at the same time. J know I am. And the ND mascot needs to be understood from a tone of huge Victorian prejudice against the Irish. Darwin had must come out with Evolution and the first victims of “We come from monkeys” is the Irish.
To be clear from an actual Irish person and the way Colin phrased things he was making fun of the poor quality sketch. In addition, your half-Irish claim doesn’t really mean much on whether or not you are offended as Irish-Americans are a completely different breed of individuals.
My thoughts are that they seem to want farrel to freak out over this.yeah he looks kinda annoyed at Kimmel but who wouldn't be if you hear this joke over and over?!
I don't think you understand Colin Farrells comment - it was obviously a dig at the SNL sketch not an endorsement of it. He obviously wasn't impressed by SNL sketch and found it insulting.
I am 100%, Irish Dundalk co Louth. I am 100% sure that like Colin I couldn't care less what you say about us. No particular harm was done and it was done in the spirit of having a bit of a laugh. Everyone move on. Well done Colin a class act as usual!
I took it as Colin pointing the racism of the Oscar’s, because they chose that question to ask, to another instance of racism. It brought attention to the issue, and really points out how hypocritical and fake the entertainment industry is.
Everyone is too easily offended. I'm from Donegal, I can hardly understand people from Kerry. Its not an insult. I'm just not used to them. I can hardly understand my friend from Glasgow. They probably think I sound like I'm from Belfast. Its just jokes. Massive exaggerations of intricacies and idiosyncrasies of people etc. No one expects a sketch to reflect reality. Irish dating show is one of my favourite SNL sketches. The Irish have a dark sense of humour in general, at least up north. I think we can handle a few digs at a generic Hollywood accent. Even Jamie dornan used it in one of his films 🤣
This is tough for Grahame to understand as he's Canadian and they never get made fun of by Americans for their accent, so he can not relate to what Colin is talking aboot !
@@Badlander87X South Park writers are Canadians, and the jokes are 'inside' jokes. Lots of the insults to Canada on American TV shows are because there are so many Canadian writers in the US, and the insults are an inside joke to the Canadian audience. Anyway, to get back to the topic, Americans and Canadians absolutely have accents and when travelling in Ireland no one's insulted me on mine although most people assumed I was American until I corrected them. Americans do make jokes about Canadian accents; have you heard the one about our pronunciation of 'about', as well as other words. And we Canadians make inside jokes about Americans too; of course, we do. But whether you're a Canadian or an American, the Irish accent is just about the easiest to understand and the loveliest to listen to, in my opinion. Because Canadians aren't relevant/don't register really. No identifying cultural features. Like America having no valid ancient culture; which is why they target cultures that do have ancient history/culture for tired mockery...not realising who the joke is really on when they get on like that.

The Irish don’t get easily offended, unlike the yanks. And yeah a lot of us have really strong accents , especially in cork , Tyrone and Kerry . And yeah we are fond of a drink . I’d rather be Irish than a cheeseburger eating school shooting yank who can’t point out their own country on a map . Incredibly proud that we received 14 nominations. A country that is ten times smaller than Texas and a smaller population than London, New York or Paris , i think we’ve done pretty good in music and film. We have the best craic in the world , no other country comes close
We all have strong accents if you're from elsewhere. Hell there's a place 15 min away from me and I am serious when I say I can barely understand them. I often joke about my friends accents Irish or other. Jesus we have to joke about something.
@@astrofiachaire Exactly! I remember my English friends were appalled by the accent of ppl from Manchester, England. They called them “Wally’s” cause they’re accent was so strong and not as refined. I think their accent is hilarious, in a good way. I used to go to stores with my friends and pretend we were from different countries by asking for candy with a thick accent. I’m sure the salespeople thought we were daft, but it made our day playing like that. It’s pure silliness. When did we stop being silly?? It’s time to bring it back. 🤣🤣👍👏👏
SNL has ALWAYS done sketches about EVERY race, creed, and tongue. For those who wear their feelings on their shoulders, you may want to NOT watch their skits.
Fact.... 1st time saw film in theatre drawn in by acting, humanity of themes and scenery 2nd time that same day watched it in theatre again to relisten to dialogue as the accents were accents and I wanted to fully understand the brilliance of the film. Some films from great britain, ireland and Australia that are online, I put subtitles on for same reason
I'm a Newfoundlander and I get people joking about Newfoundland accent and the like. Who cares, i never have and never will. Don't take comedy so seriously it's comedy.
The sketch portrays Colin and brendan as actors not as the characters they played in the film. That's why it's offensive. Both Colin and brendan are very intelligent and well spoken people. Also Colin has been sober for 2 decades now. The sketch played on tired irish stereotypes that we're all sick of.

I agree Graeme. I wasn't offended by the SNL sketch. There are some very thin skinned people out there. The most important thing was that there were so many Irish nominees at the Oscars - I would be happy to be the butt of lots of jokes for that. So what - if a few jokes are made about Irish people drinking or fighting (Colin Farrell is a non- drinker and none of the Irish are going to do a Will Smith - so, who cares.) I say 'Lighten up' to the small group of people taking offence.
When the Irish lose their sense of humour your in trouble! Everyone is taking themselves far too seriously, lighten up, have a laugh and some craic! People spend far too much time finding ways to be offended. Life is short enjoy it. Ireland is such a beautiful country, come and visit us and see for youselves. I visited the USA last year and all the people I met were amazing. Sending love all around the world, have fun. Happy St Patrick's Day.
Agree 100%. Ireland 'won' with so many nominations at the 2023 Oscars. People need to laugh and enjoy these things and move on. Life is short - enjoy it.
Clarification. The term "fighting Irish" does not come from people having fist fights in bars. I will let the Americans have the expertise and practice of bar brawls. It refers to the hundreds of years my ancestors fought to rid the Island of Ireland from British control. Get a grip and a history lesson
Seems to me that the two people who were the butt of the joke were good sports about it and had no issues with it and then the moronic media turned it into a thing for no reason.
Can you imagine if they did jokes on Jewish or Black American stereotypes what the backlash would be ......ah but shur its only the irish. ....Enough already...
Colin and Gleason were hosts on SNL recently and therefore have a relationship to that show and they were both very funny during that SNL show. It was a success. You should watch it.
Yeh he was definitely taking a dig at the skit. One thing the Irish are really feckin good at is being the most sarcastic people around, and sarcasm on that level goes completely over the heads of most Americans 🙄 Oh And he was definitely offended. Take ot from an Irish man.
I’m 100 percent Irish and also sober. Was this a lazy joke? Yes. In fact, many jokes that utilize stereotypes are. But it’s how we poke fun at ourselves. We’re a culture that has thick brogues and drink in a celebratory and sometimes excessive fashion. We also used to be a culture that appreciated dark humor (which this doesn’t even come close to) and knew that you had to “take the piss” out of things sometimes. If half of these offended users are real people and not simply online presence that solely exist to create controversy in a comment section, then you need to seriously relax. And for the record, watching the clip, Colin hardly looks like he’s upset. Those of you who are real people need to learn how to properly interpret social cues. Maybe get off the internet once and a while
Dark humour is one thing, we have that in abundance. But society tells us that we need to speak "proper English" like American English or British English. I for one am fed up of that, we need to embrace our regional accents and push back against this idea that we need to all sound the same!
I'm Irish, not really offended by Kimmel or the SNL sketch, but they're definitely lazy stereotypes.....and the worst thing is they're not funny. Colon Farrell was taking a dig at it and quite an understated and graceful way. He's not dignifying the question with a response, not taking offense. He direct Joey to the lazy SNL bit.
Nobody said a thick Irish accent. Thats your spin. The snl sketch depicted they were incoherent and drunks. Also you found a video clip of them talking over each other just to suit your argument. Why not use the million other videos when they are not talking over each other?
“I’m half Irish and I’m not offended” so you’re not Irish and you’re not offended. That’s not a surprise. Why dont you take a look at all the responses from actual Irish people, most of whom are calling it offensive…
When asked a question about how your accent is unintelligible, and you cite the clearly tone deaf humour of a poorly written sketch. Perhaps that’s the bite back? And your lack of awareness as to why it’s offensive, is part of the comment being made. “ if you can’t understand me in the movie, then you’d probably not understand the sketch from last night” even you make the point that the “viewer” question (which fits the narrative of the “humour” being pushed oddly perfectly) wouldn’t understand the sketch.
When Colin said that they should check out the SNL sketch, he was not promoting it. He was subtly pointing out that it's a lazy attempt at humour that has been done loads before. That seems to have gone over your head.
And points out the difference between American humour and Irish humour quite well.

Colin showed his pure Irish humour and class. SNL could probably take a few lessons from him and Brendan
As an Irish person living in Ireland all my life. I wasn’t offended by the sketch. It was just a crappy joke and wasn’t funny 😂
Just people getting offended for the sake of it, it wasn't funny but no one is actually getting offended. Also I'm Irish.
@@GreenHatAnimation it's the lack of consistency. It's either all or nothing. Not selective outrage at certain stereotypes.
I thought it was pretty funny. Reminded me of several times trying to understand Kerry men.
@@GreenHatAnimation I don’t think people get offended for the sake of it. It’s just some people may find it more offensive than others.
If you're Irish you'd understand, sometimes our insults are a little bit too subtle for Americans
- I don’t have even a fraction of Irish ancestry but understand great art when I see it
it should have least won for best script but was totally snubbed, a shame really
@@dani.892 To me, it’s a sign of the impact of Everything Everywhere that it beat Banshees in almost every category. There were real contenders this year.
Have you seen ‘In Bruges’ a far better movie and dark comedy in my opinion.
@@Shithappenswhenu ok
Slainte.
It's not the same as mocking those minority groups. The US has a long history of white supremacy and racism.
@@bullfrog521 you think the Irish weren't discriminated against in America? Please, educate yourself a bit.
As a banshee, I understand Collin, most people claim not to understand me through my screams.
😂😂😂
Okay then 😉
Now, that's funny 😁
Are you the banshee from Darby O Gill or the wan that does be sometimes heard below at the cross?🤣
To be clear from an actual Irish person and the way Colin phrased things he was making fun of the poor quality sketch. In addition, your half-Irish claim doesn’t really mean much on whether or not you are offended as Irish-Americans are a completely different breed of individuals.
The real joke being that sly wit can be dealt to the likes of Kimmel & co. and they won't even register the piss take. 🤫
I couldn't agree more.
To have to explain Colin’s response, shows the level of intelligence of this guy.
Amazing snl didn't make gags about how American actors attack each other live on stage in front of the entire world
Jimmy Kimmel pretty much did that joke about Will Smith during the Oscars.
I took it as Colin pointing the racism of the Oscar’s, because they chose that question to ask, to another instance of racism. It brought attention to the issue, and really points out how hypocritical and fake the entertainment industry is.
Not you saying “I’m half Irish and Irish people can have thick accents” 💀 💀 💀
Americans saying they're Irish is such a meme
@@tadhgoneill6005 its worse... He's Canadian.
@@jennym7465 😱
South Park and the Canada jokes
And to fellow Canadians who can't understand an Irish accent, I say you're either not trying or you're not even getting out of your own home province as we have many accents in our own country!
@@amandaoconnor2854 I'm irish I'm from the town that had the most brutal gangland murder ever . I know Southpark was written by matt Stone and tray Parker both Canadians I was being sarcastic as most irish are by birth sarcastic fkrs
Because Canadians aren't relevant/don't register really. No identifying cultural features. Like America having no valid ancient culture; which is why they target cultures that do have ancient history/culture for tired mockery...not realising who the joke is really on when they get on like that.
Like Colin says in the film..'IN BRUGE'...Americans!...They only understand the most basic and primitive anecdotes that they learned in summer school.
Well Done to Colin Farrell..
Irish are the best people on the planet.
Actual Irish person here.
Colin Farrell had venom in this comment. You seriously can't hear from the tone of his voice that he's angry?
Why? It's a funny skit, accurate too.
The host of this show seems to have missed Colin's point like a broken pencil. lol
You yanks are dense if you can't pick up on Collin's subtle critique of the skit. He was equating the two jokes to point out how it's an unfunny, lazy stereotype. Also ní Éireannach Tú
It’s interesting is the host of this video doesn’t get irish sarcasm. Hes Canadian with Irish ancestry
Colin was showing a sense of humor and not playing a victim. In a word, he acted like an adult. Good on him!
He was being sarcastic… but you’re obviously not intelligent enough to see it.

@@Eoin1 Agreed. I mean, accent humor can be kind of funny at times. But, what this really emphasizes is that only SOME accent humor is allowed to be "funny" anymore (and has been that way for years)- which, of course, takes all the fun out of it.

I [love] the way you segmented the bussled Oscar media chatter where they are probably full of champagne and apparently difficult to understand 😸 and you're not Irish buddy
I found it hard to understand them too, but I didn’t judge them for it. I always loved extreme accents and those who imitate them. I wish I could do a French accent.

The mad thing about it is in Ireland , Colins accent is deemed quiet posh .... check out a Dundalk accent .... or an Athlone accent ... truly awful ..
They guy parodying Colin Farrell in the skit does a northern accent, mustn't be much of a professional actor 😅

Hypocrisy that they can poke fun of Farrell but he can't poke fun at them!!!
SNL has ALWAYS done sketches about EVERY race, creed, and tongue. For those who wear their feelings on their shoulders, you may want to NOT watch their skits.
Irish isn’t a race though. Fine for Americans to make fun of their own. That’s their business.
Colin was really nice about it. Is there drama there? I doubt that.
Thank God I’m half Irish, infact the half took over the other half and told it to “get the feck out!”

I'm a court reporter. In my job people speak slow, fast, mumble or they interrupt. Other than that, if you're speaking, I can understand it

The sketch portrays Colin and brendan as actors not as the characters they played in the film. That's why it's offensive. Both Colin and brendan are very intelligent and well spoken people. Colin shouldn’t be so sensitive. He normally laughs at this stuff. Let’s face it, that’s what SNL is about. Did America get offended when Sinead OConnor ripped the popes photo without being in the script? She took the liberty on her own to do that on live tv. Frankly, SNL should have had the Pope rip up a photo of her the next week on live tv. That would have been hilarious. But she took the liberty. I’m sure there were many ppl offended, But it’s ok? the Irish r allowed to offend Only??
No one has lost their sense of humour Mary. But gibberish isn’t funny. It’s sad.

I only talk about peace....is the only acceptable response. Otherwise they twist your innocent comments into something negative.

“I’m half Irish and I’m not offended” so you’re not Irish and you’re not offended. That’s not a surprise. Why dont you take a look at all the responses from actual Irish people, most of whom are calling it offensive…
Exactly. The media 🙄
Why would you (content creator) be offended?
