  • In the fight against HIV, knowledge is our strongest ally. According to the CDC Fact Sheet on HIV Among African Americans, “while risk behaviors like sex without a condom or multiple partners are comparable to other races/ethnicities, African Americans face greater exposure risk during sexual encounters than other racial/ ethnic groups.”

I want to share 5 crucial insights about HIV among Black individuals that everyone should be aware of:
    1. Disproportionate Impact: Despite making up just 13.4% of the population, Black Americans account for over 40% of new HIV infections in the U.S.
    2. Vulnerable Groups: Black heterosexual women are disproportionately affected by HIV compared to women of other races, and Black MSM (men who have sex with men) are the leading group for new HIV infections.
    3. Age Matters: In 2016, most new HIV infections among Black individuals occurred in the 25-34 age group.
    4. High-Risk Behaviors: Engaging in sex without condoms, having multiple sex partners, IV drug use, and substance abuse are high-risk behaviors for HIV transmission.
    5. PrEP - A Game Changer: Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication that, when taken as prescribed, reduces the risk of getting HIV by up to 99%. However, remember that condoms are still necessary to protect against other STIs.
Stay informed, stay safe, and let's work together to combat HIV in our community. Your health is worth it.

For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: And they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, And consulted against thy hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; That the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: They are confederate against thee. - Psalm 83:2‭-‬5
