- We all like to be helpful when someone is experiencing emotional pain, yet sometimes we hesitate to offer support because we don’t know what to say or how to solve their problems. However, as a crisis line volunteer, Nash Fung learned that those self-perceived incapabilities can actually help us provide better emotional support.
Nash Fung is a keynote speaker who uses magic to inspire his audience. Since 2005 he works as a professional magician by day and a crisis line volunteer by night. This unique journey taught him many meaningful lessons on empathy and human connections. As a keynote speaker, he shares these lessons to empower his audiences to create a more supportive & compassionate culture. I think this makes you think on the small moments where we can make a significant impact on others lives. It's not always about the grand gestures but the small acts of listening and being present. I like that.
He makes a lot of fantastic points, particularly about giving someone the space to empty themselves before going straight to solution mode
The way he connected magic with empathetic communication was awesome! It really showed the importance of presence and genuine engagement
I have never, ever hesitated to talk to someone going through something heavy. It's not about knowing what to say, it's not about solving problems, it's about being *present* for that person when nobody else will. It's about being human.

This was eye-opening! It’s so true that many people are struggling in silence. We should all strive to be more present for each other
I had Nash speak to business leaders at a Chamber of Commerce event about empathic leadership and it was a big hit. He really knows how to connect with the audience in sharing a meaningful message. Everyone loved him! This is such an important message and he shares it beautifully.
I’ve definitely been in situations where I didn’t know what to say... it's nice to know I can just listen and acknowledge someone's pain, thank you.

Nash Fung is one of the most genuine human beings I know. I love how he can inspire by utilizing his talents to keep you entertained!
I know exactly what he means about those moments when you have to choose to keep playing your role or drop the act and connect on a human level. This used to happen to me all the time in my workplace. It was a shop right next to one of the main train stations in the city and allll kinds would come through.
This lesson is something I practice every day as a therapist. I so appreciate Nash's support of asking the simple questions or making simple comments first. He's so right that they can mean the world to someone.

The idea that not knowing what to say can lead to better support is interesting, but I'm skeptical about how practical this approach is in real-world situations outside of a controlled environment
I get what he's talking about around the 3:20 mark. It's like it frees you up to find the solution together and also because you're not coming at them with a "I know all" kind of attitude, it makes you more endearing. That's what I think anyway

While I appreciate the sentiment, I wonder if simply listening is enough in every situation. Sometimes people need actionable help too.
Though every situation is different, for the vast majority, choosing to be present for someone, to listen, to help them feel understood & heard is a good start. Of course, if we can proceed to help guide someone to their solutions, that's even better!
The flip-side of that is people hesitate to offer support because they fear not knowing how to help someone resolve their challenges, which renders the other person suffering alone :(
But what I had learned is, the simple act of reaching out in it of itself is helpful. (I think there's a research that shows people feel 70% better just because someone reached out). So I hope this talk can help someone resolve those "fears" so they can support others in need :)
