Another option would be to find a broken tree branch around the neighborhood and treat it for pests before staking your plant. It would help avoid the lumber store aesthetic and would be free to try!
Yup; several of my neighbors have bamboo “forests” in their backyards (Houston), every time they have to go through and cut them down I make sure to grab a few pieces for plant staking and other assorted crafts 😄
I just wanna say that the green on green on GREEN is literally 😚🤌🏼 chef’s kiss. You look stunning. 🌿💚 Also, thank you for posting this, I’ve been debating on switching because moss poles are a pain. This was very helpful!
I have e Way to extend it also… just pre-drill holes in the top of the one that you’re putting in you can also drill it after it’s already in the pot. And use little dowels in the holes and then do the same on the board that you’re extending it with…. with some wood glue in there and it’ll hold it!!! I save all the little extras (dowels) they send for things you need to put together for this reason.

Okay. First of all, this new setup for filming is 🤌🤌 you look beautiful! The lighting, the green all around you, your shirt, it's all CHEF'S KISS! You look amazing Becca!!! More videos with this setup, please! Second of all, the way your pushing these videos out so regularly has been saving my plant-loving (but sometimes hating) mind!!!! Thank you! I hope you and your plants have been thriving. Sending all the love and good energy your way! 🥰
My frosted heart syngonium is looking lush like yours, too! Love the planks! And now I've been decorating planks with my woodburning tool! I'll have to show you!
I use plant grafting tape it doesn’t have the harmful adhisive as regular tape it allows humidity at the nodes allowing aerial roots to attach way faster and very easy to remove no harm to the plants. It’s like cling wrap so it’s self adhesive. Give that a try for me. Your plants look so beautiful BTW keep up the great work.
I put a larger rock in the bottom of my pots if I have a fear they might tip over. It does a good job of covering the drainage hole but water will still run out🌺💚🙃
I love my planks! I use thin wooden boards that I find in the trim area of a Lowe’s or homedepot. I like them because they are thin and light. I recently found a 6 foot tomato stake set and the wood stakes are 1 inch by 1 inch but 6 ft tall. So thin enough for small climbers but long enough to cut to size. But my monstera is attached to his pile and my Mexicanum and Dark Lord are starting to attach.
I used a short piece of leftover juniper fence pole for my monstera. It had been cut in a vampire killing tool kind of a shape which made it really easy to apply into the pot when I repotted the plant😄 I intented it for staking only with no expectations of it taking hold, but it started to wrap an aerial root around the pole and attached onto it by growing small side roots from it into the wooden pole! I'm so impressed and hope this will work with other projects too. Although I heard philodendrons might have hard time attaching onto wood. We'll see. Thank you for sharing your experiments!
I’m curious about what repotting a plant on a plank would look like. I take it that it wasn’t included here maybe because you haven’t had to try that yet?
when it rains, have you ever left the door open so the plants could enjoy a bit of the humidity from the rain? you could buy a magnetic screen that’s specifically for your door and it protects your house from flies and mosquitoes. they self them on amazon for like $15!!
After spending too much time caring for my 50 plants, I'm gave away about 12 of them. Some of the remaining have died mostly due to neglect. Some died because they were not propagated correctly. I even had a table that I called the ICU. No more. I do have other hobbies I want to spend time with, so I am not going to buy or propagate anymore. Your comment about spraying a moss pole is a concern for me since I with all these plants I don't have time for that, but now that I have 'weeded out' a lot of plants, I can do that now; spend time with a few that I have. Plus no more 'fussy' plants that demand a perfect world, like Peace Lily. Never again. Thanks for this info.

So awesome Becca, I don't have any plants on planks and I like this idea, I only have my plants on poles and bamboo hoopes, I will look into putting some of them on planks because I liked the way you did these planks. Thanks for a great vides and I hope that your weekend coming up is a great one and restful too. Sending love and hugs, bye for now.😂🥰💚🪴🌿
I think moss poles are bug hideouts and I don’t really like the way they look. I use cedar branches that my husband splits for me so that one side is flat. I like the look and it’s free. I agree the Velcro works but the jute looks better.
Hi, Can I please know what kind of Stapler gun is used and the size of staple, I tried this over the weekend but had issues stapling the stakes to plank. Appreciate your help with this and thanks for this really helpful information.
I have a bunch of plants on “planks” now thanks to Caitlin’s sage advice and amazing results 😂 and they’re all doing well. Small untreated pine grade stakes for me. So far only my cebu blue is actually attaching 🎉 sweet summer child that he is 🥰 Two basic syngoniums def seem to have an affinity for the wood and leaves are 📈 in size, but most exciting are my scindapsus argyreus and pellonia repens - both trying to shingle up bamboo branches I recently repotted them onto 👀😭 As far as extending the poles, I had to extend my cebu, I basically did what you said - drilled a sm hole in the top, added a dowel with wood glue, then put the extension on using the dowel; to be safe I also staple gunned the sides to make sure it was sturdy since it’s so tall now. *random, I also had to change out a bamboo stake my burle marx was holding 🤗 onto with his aerials, they have since reattached to the new longer stake. Been wondering how easily a plant would/could reattach to a proper plank if it had to be upsized 🤔
Hello Becca from Puerto Rico!! I actually prefer the moss poles with water bottles trickling down the pole…really easy. I add a wood stake inside my pole and burn the wood that goes inside the pot…charcoal…double benefit. 💚🪴💚🙋🏼♀️
If you do the pocket holes you can do them on the back of the planks so it's not seen... I would do 2 (one on each side of the plank) on the bottom and one in the center for the plant going on the top. Also pocket hole jigs are very affordable and useful when you want to marry two pieces of wood but want it to be virtually invisible.
Cedar is one of the most porous woods hence it wont rot because it take years and years for it to rot. Keeping it moist is a challenge because of this.I my years of working with cedar siding back in the 90's I would see on occasion ivy growing on it but because you get more humidity outside.
I've tried moss poles, moss planks, trellises and wood planks in lower humidity conditions. Essentially they just act as supports and aerial roots won't grow or attach. Depending on the plant and growth pattern I find a pretty trellis to be the most appealing visually. I like the idea of a round stake/piece of wood!
Really? Well, I’m on my first monstera baby and it’s just about ready for its first support… if aerial roots don’t attach, I think I’d want to do the cedar plan option. Thanks for sharing!
I have a cebu blue climbing up my inside wall. It is a textured surface, but I didn't have anything to do with it. I do have aquariums in my house and the humidity stays above 50%, but other than that, what a surprise!
I tried using planks when you first posted about them cause I don't like the look of moss poles but so far my plants don't seem to care about the wood and keep growing small tiny leaves. Idk what I'm doing wrong

I use mending plants to attach another 2x4 above it. It’s really strong! I show it in this video ua-cam.com/video/5x-m-2g9ni8/v-deo.htmlsi=rXnAJK2SaDRZtBkm
This video was so helpful! Is there a reason why you wouldn't just use treated wood? Is it better for the plant to leave untreated? I'd prefer to stick my plank straight into the soil if possible but want to avoid rotting
There is no reason I didn’t use treated wood! I think I didn’t because I just didn’t have any around. I have a few now with treated wood and it’s been great.
Do you have to regularly spray the nodes of the plant to encourage the growth of air roots ? Because I have a large leaf pothos on a moss pole (a cheapy that doesn't hold any moisture) and a year later it still isn't growing node roots and attaching. I was thinking of switching to some natural wood branches but I'm still not sure how to promote the growth of air roots or node roots.
Do you think a piece of panty hose or clothe pressing the plant to the board would work for root attachment? Or do you think the tape creates a more humid micro climate and is why it works? I just think cloth would be easier to remove and less risk of damaging the plant.
All of my scindapsis are shingling the walls on their own, i bought some 1×4 ceder plankes a couple years ago to do this very thing, and its time to repot. I am quite sure yhey will shingle to it, but the plants are so big, i may trim and root some so i have, smaller plants to plank. I was planing to hqve them grow up both sides, and maybe wrap the longer ones in an upward angle seeing that my 4 ft posts will be filled in no time if i dont do it that way
Have you seen Caitlin from plant life in the tropics journey with her planks? She really likes to use tape, and finds that it’s not long before the roots grab on to the plank :)
