Great video! I missed this when it came out. I believe we were in Alaska at the time so I missed a lot of things I would normally see on UA-cam. Before I left I was trying to decide on what camera system to take. At the time I had a Canon R6 and R7 with the RF 100-500 as my primary wildlife lens. I also have a G9 and an OM-1. I ended up deciding to take the OM-1 with PL 100-400mm lens. I took a couple of other travel lenses as well but I don’t think I ever really used them. I also took my Panasonic LX100 for that kind of thing. one of my favorite cameras that I get great results from for people or travel. With M43 I can get everything in a small bag along with my 11 inch iPad Pro and accessories like batteries and chargers. It fits under a basic airline seat with room for both of my feet on the sides. The OM-1 performed nicely. The weather was miserable most of the time but the OM-1 didn’t care. I believe that if I had confidence that Olympus is going to survive for a few more years that I would sell my Canon gear. The quad pixel AF is better than the R6 and R7. Especially in poor light. The camera is crazy fast. The R7 with the 100=-500 gives me better IQ if the images are in focus and rolling shutter doesn’t rear it’s ugly head. I still might do it. What I really want is a G9 with the OM-1 AF. But I think that Panasonic is moving out of the still photography business. If I do sell my Canon gear I might try and order an Oly 150-400. It does kind of defeat the purpose of M43 in that it’s a bit large but at 1000mm equivalent it might be worth it. Of course actually finding one is an issue. Some people have waited over a year for one. Supposedly they produce about one a day. I would really love it if they were to get Sigma to make that lens for M43. I loved my EF Sigma on my R6 even with the pulsing AF.

ahh yes you noticed the same thing. The Canon's with the canon EF glass has a pulsing focus issues especially with video but man it works really well. I been testing my R10 vs m43 gear and am happy to say I think I can replace my m43 gear now with canon. I want to make a video about the journey and testing that has happend in the last 3 months. Yes, I was extermely pissed at canon about the 3rd party lens support issues. After close examination comparing different system its hard to pass on the R10 with the 100-400 and 1.4 adapter. It equaled my em5miii and g9 very easily if not surpassed them in many ways... Also the weight is the same as the em5miii or less. Sadly onlything missing is weather sealing....

@@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE I need to get the RF 100-400 to try with my R7. I came close to buying one for my Alaska trip but was concerned over the lack of weather sealing. Also I have found the R7 AF tends gives up in poor light. I do hate the rolling shutter on the R7. I do not like using mechanical shutter on the R7 because it is really loud. My dream camera right now would be an APS-C Canon with a better EVF and buffer plus a faster readout sensor. I know Canon is going to be around for a while. Meanwhile I guess I am going to continue using 2 systems.

Great episode, thank you for for putting this together.
The OM SYSTEM OM-1 is a outstanding camera. Pared with the Panasonic 100-400mm (800mm equivalent) it is insane for bird/wildlife photography at just a THIRD of the weight and price of the other brands!
The Panasonic G9 is also still fantastic as are the older Olympus OM-D cameras.
    Cheap, weather sealed and light!
I am currently getting the most out of my Nikon P950 but I miss capturing moving birds/wildlife and I am very tempted to pick up one of the following (Australian Pricing):
    1. Nikon Z50 and the Nikon 100-400mm lens $5,700
    2. OM Solutions OM-1 and the Panasonic 100mm to 400mm lens $5,100
    3. Olympus OM-D EM-1 III and the Panasonic 100-400mm lens $4,300
    4. Olympus OM-D EM-1 II and the Panasonic 100-400mm lens $3,400
    5. Panasonic G9 with the Panasonic 100-400mm lens $3,400
    6. Olympus OM-D EM-5 III with the Panasonic 100-400mm lens $3,200
    7. Canon R7 with the Canon RF 100-400mm f5.6-8 $3,200
    8. Canon R10 with the Canon RF 100-400mm f5.6-8 $2,600
Unless you are rich or selling your images, anything above these sets simply does not make sense.
For now, I am resisting! Especially as Sony may bring out the RX10 V soon and Nikon may release an update to the P1000/P950 within the next year.

Excellent analysis.... Yep agree the price tag above what you mentioned gets pretty insane. Thoug the a7rIv and 200-600 will cost you 5K or 5200 which is in those areas but hey we get that..... Also be very interesting if nikon made a p1000 #2....... Thanks for watching.

I'm currently a G9 shooter with the 100-300mm but I occasionally throw an old 150-500mm Sigma on it with an adapter. Balances well, but the AF on the adapter is too spotty to rely on. I would love a native 150-600mm and have been tweeting that at Panasonic for a while now. One other benefit of the 2X crop is with insect macro in the field. The G9's articulating screen is great for that too. All in all, m43 works for my current needs (small system to carry while I'm doing ecology work) but I would steer well clear of it if I was still doing event photography.

Hey a side note. Did you G9 ever have solid lock focus with the 150-600. I could of swore my g9 did at one time and then something happen. I know for certain that my em5mii and m3 worked very well then bam just hits a soft focus..... Curious on your thoughts ?

@@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE I'm using a Viltrox F-mount to m4/3 mount and it never had great focus lock - it hunts a lot. I bought it immediately on release but iirc the Canon mount was released first.
I did update the firmware at one point and I think it made it worse, but I've never really trusted it. AF-S + single point is the only way to make it usable for me. Works fine for stationary birds like heron wading heron though.

@@xanedan4565 Ok, i am using the metabones adapter. At one point initially it was horrible , then firmware upgraded and went pretty well then upgraded firmware again and bam started going backwards. I tried uninstalling the firmware but still seems like it is not as good focus misses focus and I need to keep refocusing on the subject all the time just to make sure that it is not soft focusing. Thanks for sharing.

Stafford, I hope OM and Panasonic are listening to you and what I thought was some good advice for those companies. I'm very happy with my G9 and 100-400mm lens for birding but I agree with you about the marketing. Some of the "new" features like pro-capture on cameras like the Nikon Z9 have been available on the G9 for years. It's time Olympus and Panasonic stopped keeping some of the best engineering a secret.

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE

No Doubt. I feel like Olympus could market a 600 or 800mm lens and own the market for long distance much like the p1000 nikon for point and shoots. As of now the camera stores indicated in my area Oly/Panny are 2% of their sales......

Agree, they stand to make more money marketing to travel, sports, & wildlife photographers. You’re right, they need to find some huevos and put together an advertising campaign! I like some of this ambassador shit they do though - it’s a way to show what the camera can do in photographer’s hands with different creative visions.

Do you know any that can go from 16mm to 600mm FF equivalent in under a kilogram (camera included)? MFT can. That seems pretty damn versatile. The Sigma FP you showed has a FF lens on it? I have my doubts. I also don't believe you can put that in your jeans' pocket without looking like you put something huge in your pocket- that's reserved for phones and point and shoots (maybe a GM1 with a 14mm). I do not want Olympus or Panasonic to completely forget the travel/city/everyday photo/video crowd. I wouldn't buy it otherwise.

yea, the only camera I think would be the tamron 18-400 put on the M200 is super small and light weight. Suppose to equate to 26 to 640mm. I have a review of the tamron 18-400 coming up. Great lens IMHO. The sigma FP is actually very small but a little thicker than normal. The 35mm lens on it is super compact so but can squeeze in your jeans pocket not that bad. The new gear is getting to have less weight. I am also testing out the 100-400 Canon RF which equates to 160-to 640mm FF. The industry is changing so fast. Also I do not want to see OLY or Pany go away I like the light weight versatile lenses/cameras they produce. Sadly they seem to be making larger cameras. hmmmmm. I like the GFX850 that was super small along with the 100-300 pany was the lightest camera system I have ever had that gives 600mm reach.

@@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE I'll be looking for your future reviews. It sounds like you've never tried the Olympus 75-300, coming in at only 423g. IMO, that lens makes the MFT small kit work. Add a small primes with a E-M5 iii or OM-5 and you're under 1kg. That Panasonic 100-300 is 520g (still quite light). You're right to pair it with the GX850 (I have it), making it even smaller and lighter (only 799g) than the OM-5 and 75-300. The Tamron you mentioned seems like an extreme design, but could be interesting. The Canon 100-400 is light and has reach, but starts at f/5.6... I guess physics is just not on their side. 🙂
