- How do you pull an arrow out of the wood the right way without breaking your arrow? What if you are by yourself and have to get an arrow out of the target stand? Using these basic hand tools, I show you how to remove your arrow from a stand the right way. Plus I show you how to check your carbon arrows for damage to be sure you can shoot the arrow again safely.

Some tool tips:
I prefer a rubber mallet to a regular hammer. This is especially useful if the point is sticking out the back of plywood, as you can safely bump the point out from behind.
The Decut Honba arrow puller is great for stubborn or frozen targets. You can get an incredible amount of leverage and grip on the arrow.
A cotton ball is great for running down carbon shafts or fiberglass limbs to see if they are compromised. The cotton will catch loose fibers indicating breakage.
I'm glad you made this video, not just for the guide but for the fact you showed anyone can miss. A lot of people wouldn't have admitted to it happening unless they had meant it, so kudos to you for not only owning up to it but also turning it into a teaching opportunity.
I point a lot of the new archers at our club to your channel for tips and information but I think when they hear that even those that are, or have been, at the very top of the sport can miss and hit the frame, it doesn't make them feel as bad when it happens to them. Plus the fact we do field means that hitting the frame (or logs, or trees, or... well you know the score there) is a more regular occurrence so the tips on getting the arrows out and checking them are great as well.

that's why I have a screwdriver and a super thick bladed knife, has helped in dozens of situations!
Also helps that a lot of the people around me use screw in tips with an easton arrow tip remover :P
Ohh yesss I get to practice this technique every once in a while when I adjust something in my bow and get to my practice range and shoot without doing a walk back tune for precaution!!! I carry a folding knife to do just that, open a slit along the grain on both sides of the arrow. You have to be more carefull with the knife but it works. The screwdriver I think gives quicker result.
Neat use of wood anatomy to solve the problem and great discussion on arrow checking--a number of us have had the "pleasure" of dealing with errant carbon fibers in the fingers or hands. Kudos
I always have a multi tool on me and I just use the awl. The same principle is happening but I just drill a small hole above and below the arrow releasing the pressure and it just pops out. If the grain is left to right Ill drill the hole to the right of the shaft and to the left of the shaft if its up and down I drill above and below. Most leathermans have an awl and that is what I usually carry and it works on processed lumber, stumps, logs etc.

Unbelievable! Once again a real useful tip which in 5 years of shooting arrows into target stands I have not heard before!
Seeing you twisting the shaft for damage makes me remember the Beman Diva+ shafts from the late 80s, best in performance, worst in durability.
Having pulled numerous arrows from the wood part of our club butts in a different manner than this, it seems totally logical to work with the grain of the wood when you really think about it. Yet I hadn't seen anyone at the club do it like this, even people with decades of shooting under their belt. What an excellent tip. Your miss made a excellent opportunity to make more content. I'd be tempted to use some small flat chisels over screw drivers though. I might get a couple with a hammer and donate to the club for the next time one gets really stuck.

What i do additionally I hold the arrow close in front of the feathers and bump the shaft slightly sideways against my other hand.
So I can hear some rattling noise if some glue on the internals (mostly insert/arrow tip) came loose.
What I don't do anymore is the spinning on the palm, I did that back in the days while I was using aluminium arrows, and also AC arrows can be bent.
I use pure carbon arrows which can have only 2 states, strait (as strait as they came out of the factory) or broken.
Thank's Jake, regularly need this, because arrows go all the way through my target and embed in the stand behind!

They used a very similar technique in the film Taladega Nights, to remove the knife from Ricky Bobby's leg!

Found another method if the arrow isn't too deep into the wood is to flex the arrow a tiny amount in a circular motion, cannot stress how small of a flex. The arrow works itself free fairly quickly. Not sure how good it is long term for the arrow but definitely super handy method and haven't damaged anything yet
I already knew bending and hearing to crack, but didn't know the twist test, but already shot enough arrows into the wood to know how to get the arrow out. And If the bow isn't as strong, especially with thicker arrows, you can often get the arrow out by grabbing the arrow close to the impact, and waddling around, widening the hole a bit wil work if the arros is not to deep in the wood, and holding an arrow next to the arrow in the wood gives indicates how deep the tip is into the wood.

I went to collegiate outdoor nationals about a month ago after having a single practice at 70M (new-ish to archery + club had limited access to large fields + TERRIBLE weather). This would have been extremely helpful then haha I hit wood more than I hit gold

A metal chisel is designed to be hit with a hammer and will work perfect in wood.Scredriver handle might break and bust a thumb.

I always carry my Leatherman tool, arrow removal no problem.
I use a Hamskea AroJac to pull stubborn arrows. They're expensive but they make it so much easier. I got mine second hand which eased the pain but I was so impressed that if anything happened to mine it would buy a new one full price one without hesitation.
The only thing to be aware of is that the rubber jaws do become contaminated over time and start to slip. When that happens you can rejuvenate them by washing them with dishwashing soap.

one of those amazingly useful videos! I had one in my back gate the other day and I wish I'd thought of the screwdriver trick. edit:: haha.. I just setup my zniper rest, and consequently shot into the gate again.... this method worked so well!!!!
I also twist the arrow to find out if it has any cracks. Grab the two ends and twist in a different direction. If you hear the strange sound, it is not safe anymore

I have been doing a lot of unmarked 3D practice out in the woods and was wondering if you have a good technique for getting them out of oak and Douglas fir. I think everyone has lost arrows to the wood monsters out there.
i sharpened a vanadium screwdriver into an awl that i just jam in. sometimes i have to dig a bit as well. same trick as Jake showed tho.

Luckily it was not imbedded that bad. If I may add a drop of wisdom, for more ergonomic procedure (as the bale could have interfered in the retrieval)... it might ease the job a little by dettaching the board from the frame & re-attach it again later.
It went through the 1x4 into the 2x4. Plus most people won’t have tools or the ability to remove parts of stand that aren’t theirs like at a club or something.

the screwdriver costs less to replace than the arrow, so if you've gotta damage something... go for the screwdriver.
There's arrow pullers?
Another method: Take an aluminum arrow of the proper thickness and diameter (a Genisis arrow works perfectly for .166" shafts such as vaps, and is quite thick-walled, but if you have thicker arrows you can calculate out what size aluminum shaft you need) and cut teeth into the end of the shaft with a dremel tool. This creates a long, straight hole-saw. Strip the vanes off the stuck arrow, remove the nock, and slide the toothed aluminum shaft over the stuck arrow's shaft (with lube if you desire). Chuck it in a drill, and slowly drill out the stuck arrow, cleaning out the sawdust often. You'll be left with a neat round hole in the wood of the target which you can easily repair with wood putty or a dowel. In my experience the teeth of the aluminum shaft will get chewed up and need to be remade after a single use, but it has worked perfectly for me every time. Store the aluminum shaft "hole saw" in your arrow tube.
