I was just watching the other video and I was thinking that it would be funny if someone uploaded the Today Show's viewpoint, and here it is. Official proof that everything is on UA-cam.
Fantastic job with the video preservation work and doing the picture-in-a-picture to show what was happening from both perspectives! And, many thanks to the great writers and the team at Letterman's show.
Golden Pacific Media Thanks so much, it's nice to have my hard work appreciated! And thanks to you as well for posting some great Letterman treasures. Looking forward to watching the Morning Show...
The Today Show producer Steve Friedman contacted Letterman's producer Robert Morton and asked that Letterman interrupt the Today Show filming with something wacky.. Gumbel was angry at the wrong person.
Imagine if Letterman was on ABC and did this during a special primetime "Good Morning America" -- which would be called "Good Evening America" -- done outdoors while pretending he's the president of ABC (though they only did the news updates for them, GMA didn't become part of ABC News until the mid-'90s); David Hartman/Charles Gibson and Joan Lunden would've freaked out!
I wouldn't say it failed...you can see from Letterman's perspective that it got their attention. I would say he just picked the wrong time to pull it off to the viewers.
That's weird. I coudl have sworn I had seen this footage before, but it was completely different. I remember seeing one where Jane Pauley and Bryant Gumbel are out in front of Rockefeller Plaza, doing some type of taping or whateer, and as Dave's ambush begins, Bryant says something like, "Is that Letterman", and then you see both of them look up at the building, looking angry. Weird. Mandela Effect in action, I guess. (shrug)
@@DCGuy1997 Yeah, but they showed this on an anniversary thing, I think, for The Today Show, where they showed just the footage of Jane Pauley and Bryant Gumbel, with the audio that the actual audio of what was happening Rockefeller Plaza, not the audio of Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas talking. I distinctly remember, Bryant Gumbel saying something like that, "Is that Letterman?". And my recollection was that Bryant looked massively pissed.
Wow. That was a bore. I wanted Jane or Bryant to turn around and say: What the hell's going on here!!?? Who's the clown yelling from the building!!?? Don Johnson: Uh...Jane? What is this?? I am NEVER doing this show again!!
I remember on one of Letterman's anniversary shows, they played the clip of Dave on the bullhorn. After the "I'm not wearing any pants" comment, Jane Pauley turned her head around and looked up, but on this I don't see her turn to look.
echolot I put Bryant in the same category as "Boob" Costas....arrogant self serving dweebs who REALLY believe they are important to American TV. Cheers

I was laughing harder at this clip than the Letterman pov.
Dude, amazing work!!!
At 1:49 you can see the 2nd potato look up towards Dave's camera.
If you listen closely and with the volume up all the way, you can hear the people watching the Today show laughing! Classic Letterman!!!

Great tidbit, Pete! Where'd you learn of this?
@@AdamAbramsVancouver from Morty.
@@petesmitt Wow! Well, thanks so much for sharing that info. Definitely puts a different spin on it!
Too funny..even though Bryant was pissed at Letterman,he and his producer knew about this broadcasting of Letterman's voice weeks before.....
The moment that started a long, ugly feud with Bryant Gumbel.
It certainly appears to have been the origin!

GOOD JOB! HOWEVER I WISH I COULD HAVE SEEN THE REMAINDER OF THE MIAMI VICE INTERVIEW.
Ooooooo, that minx Jane Pauley. She's like the anti-Fran Drescher.
Yeah he didn't really interrupt anything did he
Nicely detailed
so the prank basically failed - too low volume and wrong moment chosen
I wouldn't say it failed...you can see from Letterman's perspective that it got their attention. I would say he just picked the wrong time to pull it off to the viewers.
jetsebutenpost It wasn't a complete failure. The uptight Gumble was apparently pretty angry about the stunt.
cainster And notice how the live Today Show audience could also be heard laughing at Dave's antics in the background
@@cainster it didn't completely fail but it was bad timing.

If you see the full Letterman footage you can see the part you remember. It's not shown here.

Bryant Gumbel is like a liver spot.
LOL!😂
nice job.
Bryan Gumball was a world class D-bag.
Could barely hear Letterman. It wasn’t that bad.

Had the cameras kept rolling after that segment, you would have seen a different a picture.

***** Bill O'Reilly easily tops that list.
chuckybooey LOL...Bill would definitely be on that LOSER LIST...great selection! Cheers
