It's all subjective obviously, but Angel Rat and The Outer Limits at D and C is very disturbing to me! lol As usual, good tier list with fair considerations.

I get people who are specifically into their heavier, more out there stuff not clicking with the more mainstream-accessible sound of The Outer Limits, and especially Angel Rat, but I really like 'em. Sure, you lose some of the experimentalism they'd previously had, but they gained a dreamier, more melodious sound I quite like, and as much as I love Nothingface, I wasn't sad to hear the crunchy bass sound get traded in for something smoother.
For me, the golden age of Voivod is Dimension Hatross or Nothingface (depending on how selective you want to be) through The Outer Limits. Negatron just does not do it for me. I love the aggression at the beginning of "Insect", but the song feels played out before it gets halfway through, and the rest of the album has never grabbed me. It's just not my sound, I guess.

I know the name Voivod since my high school days back in the late 80's but never, never, never got into them. Only a month ago started to listen their setlist for the incoming concert and listed Synchro Anarchy in full. I enjoyed the show. Took pictures with them after the show and I cannot take "Synchro Anarchy" riff out of my mind. What an AWESOME song, and the lyrics are so good.

5:56 fair enough. In general though, as a huge Rush fan and a Voivod semi-enjoyer, that’s kinda just like the band’s whole sound period. They added in more dissonant stuff but the bass and the James Bond riffs are very Rush inspired.
I almost feel like the whole goal of this band was to make Rush metal.

I got Dimension Hatross in either late 1988 or early 1989. I was 15 at the time and let's just say I definitely had never heard anything like it before. One of the most unique, bizarre and unusual albums ever. Nothingface upped their game to an untouchable level in 1989 and once again blew my teenage mind. This was the era of hair metal and Bay Area thrash clones, so truly nothing else sounded like Voivod. I of course got Angel Rat when it came out in 1991 and lissen here, bub, it's a f'n great album that turns accessible, catchy metal on its side. It's S tier to me. It felt like a natural progression and I played it just as much as Nothingface. I think the Outer Limits is overlooked and people should revisit it.
I just don't care for the Eric Forrest era one bit.
Also agree that the s/t Voivod was mediocre, but I love Jason Newsted for getting Voivod back together. I also think Katorz and Infini are a wonderful tribute to Piggy, as they built songs around the demos he had on his laptop around the time of his death. He had notes on how to finish the songs and the band spent a considerable amount of time doing laborious studio work to make it happen. There's some gems in there, though I do agree it's not completely consistent. And had Piggy not passed away, I'm sure there would have been improvements from the demo ideas to final versions. I'd put them at C tier and want to let other fans know that there's some good stuff in there.
I don't have a strong opinion about Target Earth. The Wake is f'n awesome, though. And I haven't had enough time to fully absorb Synchro, but it feels like it's one of their best. So glad this band has as many lives as a feline.

I would definitely put The Wake at A or maybe even S, I just love how friggin weird and ominous that album sounds. Have you heard the brass band version of End of Dormancy? Really cool and different.
Past though though I think this is pretty spot-on (though I might switch the A and B tiers personally). People tend to shit on the Eric Forrest albums for not being classic 'Vod but I think they're every bit as forward-thinking as the previous stuff.

Excellent - Nothingface, Angel Rat, The Outer Limits
Great - Dimension Hatross, Voivod, The Wake
Good - Target Earth, Synchro Anarchy
    Pass - Everything else
Though The Wake has not clicked with me quite as much as their golden age stuff (Dimension Hatross through Outer Limits), it may just be a little less my style, or maybe it's a difference of what time in my life I encountered the albums, and I feel like I may be underrating it, and it may belong in the top tier or perhaps between the top two tiers.
Target Earth and Synchro Anarchy are mainly ranked where they are because I find them to be a definite step up from Katorz and Infini, while seeming like a definite step down from The Wake, but I'd honestly have a hard time evaluating them in a much more detailed manner. They're just kind of there: not bad, but also not hugely compelling for me.
I need to go back and relisten to Phobos a few times. I wrote it off back in the day, but after Negatron, I needed convincing to like their next album and perhaps never gave it a fair chance. And since them, I've just kind of waved it away as something I'm not into, without properly reconsidering my position.
Albums in the "pass" category may still contain a good song or two, but aren't appealing to me taken as a whole, even with a couple of skips in there.
Yes, Voivod is in my second tier. I like the way it grooves. Well, the better half of it anyway. There are some songs I could happily toss, but I'm willing to accept that in this day and age.

I mostly agree with you here (unlike some of your Napalm Death rankings) but I'd definitely place Killing Technology firmly at the top tier. I bought that album right there in '87, and few if any album releases have ever had such a MASSIVE impact on my musical journey. It was truly that profound, and I was not alone in my thinking at the time. Additionally, KT has held up extremely well after all these years; to this day, songs like Tornado and Overreaction still induce me to engage in dangerous & reckless behavior, whether at home or on the road. Otherwise, great job. 🤘

Interesting list, especially appreciate the love for the Eric Forrest records.
After my Voivod binge of last year, I realize I have next to no objective opinion as I loved most of their albums but if I were to rank what I heard:
    14. Infini - worst of the 3 Newsted era albums; bland and ok at best, not very well written and boring at worst.
    13. Katorz - Mostly indifferent to this one. A step down from their self-titled as it's just more of the same, but even less memorable. Nothing terrible, but nothing stellar either. I guess you can say it KATORZ to the mainstream? Huh? Huh? Get it? I apologize.
    12. RRROOOAAARRR - it's fine. It's like you said, a bit of prog ideas are seeping in, but aside from that find it a bit too samey and awkward unlike their debut; Killing Technology would be the one where it clicked in my opinion.
    11. Voivod - a bit controversial, but out of the 3 Newsted albums, I find this one to be the best and the most inspired; musically it's a bit too "normal" in comparison to early albums, but there isn't any bad performances or any real duds in it from my experience; just a normal, fun album. By consequence, however, it's not as noteworthy as the rest of their previous records, and suffers from the album going on for too long. Hearing it again gives me more appreciation for it, I guess, compared to something like Infini.
    10. War and Pain - classic meat and potatoes thrash. I like it a tad more than RRROOOAAARRR because it's more focused. Not much to say about it; it's good!
    9. Target Earth - I like this one a lot, shares a lot of the same vibes as The Wake does below for me. Great to hear after hearing Infini, like a breath of fresh air.
    8. The Wake - I dig the style and the vocals; it lives up to their older records quite well, and I dig how hard they lean into the themes of the record. Really great album.
    7. Killing Technology - classic album, you described it the best.
    6. The Outer Limits - Love this one; catchy and sprawling with interesting sci-fi themes and lyricism; Jack Luminous never feels boring to listen to despite how long it is. Just a great experience with some of their best material.
    5. Negatron - I find this one a bit underrated; Eric Forrest's vocals are insanely visceral to me, and each track absolutely rips, and to top it all off, an appearance of one of my favorite artists (Foetus) closes the album. Incredible, that was unexpected for me and blew my mind. Compared to some of their thrash contemporaries, the 1990s had Voivod absolutely killing it in terms of quality.
    4. Dimension Hatross - where the band started to absolutely blow my mind. From this album up to Phobos is one of the most enjoyable listens I have ever had with a discography. This record kick started that enjoyment.
    3. Phobos - like Negatron but a step up in variety and quality, and just as ferocious. I really want to see what their 3rd album with Eric Forrest would have sounded like.
    2. Nothingface - just wonderful stuff, including that great cover of Astronomy Domine; their most prog effort arguably, and they did it with aplomb.
    1. Angel Rat - I find this one to be highly underrated and also found myself going back to it more and more; songs like The Prow absolutely kick my ass and every song here has an element of simultaneous catchiness and heaviness that their 2003 self-titled record lacked. I think it's incredible and often when I don't know what to listen to, I throw it on.
Hearing all the love for Synchro Anarchy has me hyped beyond belief. I'm so excited to hear it.

But I don't really "get" the other earlier albums. Feels like I prefer real prog and real thrash/metal.
