  • Mercy was a group started by Jack Sigler, Jr., with former members of his high school, Brandon High in Brandon, near Tampa, Florida. They spent about a year after graduating performing from Tampa to Miami. After several personnel changes, Mercy settled in as an eight-person congregation consisting of Jack Sigler, Brenda McNish, Debbie Lewis, Ronnie Caudill, Ann Sigler, John Hudson, Roy Schultz, and Lou Vasenda.
Jack's father knew a Hollywood movie producer who in 1968 had come to Tampa to shoot a movie called Fireball Jungle. The producer, George Roberts, heard Mercy through the senior Sigler and asked them to perform a song in his movie. Jack had written "Love (Can Make You Happy)" in high school and the group performed it for the movie. . The movie was finished in 1969, but apparently not released to theaters. It was a car crash and violence extravaganza, and several clips and trailers are available on the internet.
Jack's father put up some cash for the group to record their songs as a single (it may be this recording that was used for the group to lip-synch to in the film).

I drove my Austin Healey to Manhattan to visit a girlfriend just as this song was getting air play. She and her room mate were stews for United. We put the top down on the Healey and all three of us drove around the East 80's with the radio full blast. Love Can Make You Happy came on the radio and we all sang the easy lyrics. Sappy story I guess, but fantastic memory.

Beautiful message. The 1960s produced a lot of sunshine pop tunes that lifted our feelings and this was one of them. We just don't have music like this anymore.

Amazing how you feel listening to this vis-a-vis contemporary rap/hip hop, or even the Stones' music from that era.

@@issues9828 Yes indeed. Today's music lacks the aesthetic and feelings embodied in much of the older music. If we listen to A Beautiful Morning by the Rascals or Abraham, Martin and John by Dion, just a couple of examples, it produces a positive reaction. When I listen to the stuff coming out of people's radios as they drive down my street, I wonder what has happened to us in terms of the capacity to identify with beauty and positive emotions. Has true love died? Rap and Hip hop represent an ugly esthetic to me. There's no emotional beauty in it.

@@warmweatherfriend1756 I love those two songs. I remember being in grade school in the '70s, and waking up to a New England spring morning with warm sunshine, and hearing "It's A Beautiful Morning" on the radio and feeling that the spirit of the song captured perfectly the emotions that the spring morning sun conveyed.
Although I feel that the Dion song has some lyrical flaws, I do love the song and listen to it often.

The true story, told to me by guitarist Ron Caudill was that they were signed by Warner Brothers and the Sundi head was mad and put together a fake band.
They fought in court and won but they didn't get any more hits.
The girls left, then Ron and they just disbanded at that point.

    • @shuroom57

Maybe, and this is just a guess, they were _LISTENING_ to the band! We used to do that back then; we would focus our EARS on music, not our eyeballs because you see, ears pick up sound, which is what music is. Eyeballs do NOT pick up sound. Stevie Wonder, for instance, is blind and can not only hear music, he can MAKE it as well. Why? Because he has EARS. EYEBALLS are more useful in the visual art world. If these patrons in this video went to an art gallery and didn't look at the paintings and just sat around yakking it up with their dates, macking on fried chicken, swilling beer, and THEN, _applauded_ , well, yehhh..... THAT would be weird.

    1. Does that sign say "LSD" on the wall? Dang. Ruins the video for me if it does.
    2. I bought the Sundi single of this in a record store around 1974 when I was 14...they were probably long-disbanded by then. Interesting you say the movie was called "Fireball jungle" because the flip side of the record was an instrumental song called (drum roll) "Fireball". It sounded like a bunch of Florida gulf coast (where there are no Pacific-style waves) kids playing "fuzz" guitar making a surf record.
