Hill Boyce In 1995 the bulls(without Rodman) didn't even make it to the finals. They lost to Shaquille o Neal and the magic in the conference finals. After drafting Rodman, the Chicago bulls crushed the Magic 4-0 in 1996 conference finals. Nothing changed f9r the bulls except for Rodman. And this is further backed up when Rodman completely locked down shaq, with him scoring 0 points the second half of a game. Of course Michael Jordan improved by a whopping 4 ppg. It doesn't take a basketball genius to see that 4 more points a game doesn't let you shutdown a team which you clearly lost to...
Hill Boyce Furthermore, Rodman had 14.9 rpg that season. MJ had roughy 30ppg that season. If all his points were 2's(which it clearly wasn't), than MJ would be scoring 15 baskets a game which is the same amount of rebounds Rodman had. So if MJ even made just one 3 a game, Rodman was a more efficient rebounder than MJ was a scorer that season. Now if we're talking about defense, than both have good defense, but Rodman is clearly much bette than Jordan.
Hill Boyce so this tells us that MJ was only better than Rodman at scoring that season, and even with that, he was a less efficient scorer than Rodman was a rebounder.

Dennis Rodman was a guy I was always keeping my eye on during games since the Detroit years. He made an impact away from the ball far beyond anyone I've ever seen, and changed the momentum of games as much as Jordan, Magic, and Bird. Astounding to watch.

A valid case for Rodman being Finals MVP as the defeated Sonics always referenced Rodman. In the end I don't think Rodman cares as long as his team wins.

Thanks for doing your homework. The thing about Rodman is a lot of these points don’t end up in a stat column and a lot of people can’t get past that. I’ve been talking to my 11 year old son who is a slightly undersized post player about how much you can change the outcome of a game without scoring a single basket. He’d have games where he would maybe only have 2 points and all of his friends and teammates were discussing how much they scored. So he’d be discouraged. But simply explaining to him that boxing out every shot, rebounding, hustling, diving, playing good defense has just as big of an effect of a game as a made shot does or possibly even more really put a light bulb on above his head. Rodman was the best ever at this. Even showing him career stats that Rodman only had one season in his career where he scored double digits and still made the hall of fame speaks volumes about hustle.
I have played hustle ball all my life and anyone who has played with me will take me over the leading scorer any day because they know I will shut that scoring down... and get us some fast breaks

Rodman is the greatest defensive presence I've ever seen. He was master of the mental game and intangibles that stats don't show. That Wes Unseld historic reference was gold.
Chip yard in my humble opinion, he kept the Bulls in the playoffs, time after time. He was too unique for the league to “handle”

I remembered Dennis Rodman all up in Frank Brikowski's head from the beginning of the 1st quarter of game 1. Then Dennis worked on the "Reign Man" and made him foul out. By game 3, "Dennis the Menace" owned the whole entire Sonics team.

No the game is called basketball so the team that scores the most points wins the game. Defense is very important but you still have to put the ball in the basket and Mike did that.
The introspective music, paired with amazing edits, and nostalgic footage, make one of the best vids on youtube. The subject matter, being Dennis Rodman the unsung hero, hit home for me. Felt like I was in 6th grade again. Nobody out worked Rodman. It's sad to look behind the scenes and into his personal life, but what an inspiration to be the absolute best you can be, priorities in order. 30 years from now, we will remember Michael Jordan. I want people to also remember Dennis Rodman.

The story of his past especially when younger was definitely turbulent but he's come into quite a respectable & sincere lifestyle later after retirement even though he's kept his quirks lol. My family used to call me worm when I was a little kid too & I still got my Rodman Pistons jersey in the closet. I love seeing him get his respect!

I would love to see him in today's game. He wouldn't be able to use his physical presence like he did back then and you couldn't put him on the floor with another low post scorer but his defensive instincts, athleticism, would still be fun to see in today's game as he would have to guard pick and rolls more, switch more, etc. I love watching players play great defense so for me it would be fun to see him play defense in today's game using different skill sets we didn't get to see as much back when he played due to the rules.

Kemp was phenomenal for the most part. Rodman's offensive rebounding bailed Mj and Pippen out repeatedly. l don't think he got into Kemp's head.

As a Bulls MJ die-hard fan, I watched the whole series with fright. I still consider this SuperSonics team the most fierce enemy of the MJ’s dynasty. If it is not for Dennis Rodman, the Bulls would not have had a second three-peat. Not only was Rodman a beast in physical playing, but most importantly he was also a master manipulator who successfully threw Shawn Kemp (who was unstoppable) off his game by trash talking and playing mind games the entire series. He deserved the Finals MVP 👍🏼
He got Kemp ejected in game one. And that was with Sonics being up by 6-8 pts throughout most of the game.
The ejection not only turned around the game but the whole series. As I honestly believed whoever won the game would win the series.
Both teams were too good to let up a series lead. So Rodman getting Kemp out of the game and ruining Sonics sync was the biggest play of that series and that single play changed the destiny of the Bulls run. That alone made Rodman Finals MVP. Not too mention the ridiculous offensive rebounds made in that game as well.

Rodman scored 7 points a game in that finals. He didn't deserve finals MVP if he averaged 20 rebounds because he barely had a part in the offense.

I always dug the story abut Dennis getting on an exercise bike AFTER a game. It's been said many times, but despite all of the off-court stuff, the one thing you cannot doubt is his work ethic. It takes extreme effort to maintain the level of fitness he displayed. He wasn't always the fastest, or the highest jumper, but the motor was always running, and the pedal was all the way down.
Watching a multi-millionaire willing to dive for loose balls even when he probably wouldn't get it was awe-inspiring. There's no way to measure what kind of boost that gives a team.
I remember watching the 1996 finals and thought Dennis was making most of the plays down the stretch. With all of his flaws, he was one great defensive basketball player of all time.

We got there early , were the first ones there and Dennis was by himself, just shooting. He then approached my father and I, and said “wassup lil man”. He proceeded to sign my fathers Spurs starter jacket , one of the moments that defined my childhood and one that I’ll never forget . Thank you Dennis for always being you. Watching the finals way back in 96, I was honestly surprised Dennis didn't get the Finals MVP award. I'm glad there is recognition to this matter on the internet two decades later.

Rodman was definitely the x factor. He cleaned up for the many short comings of many teammates. Dennis showed the beauty of the triangle when he converted passes from his teammates and controlled the boards. #91 was gigantic and other years too.

I bet a lot of people commenting here didn't even watch the games in this series. Some people probably looked up some stats and drew conclusions from that. Others will think Mike is the best no matter what. Their minds are set for the rest of their lives. I watched all 6 games of this series several times. There were stretches of games in this series where Rodman was on another level. He was the best player on the court. Kemp played a great series as well. Jordan was not his usual self. Most of game six he appeared nervous. I think he admitted he was. After game six I remember at least one Bulls player assumed Dennis won the MVP. George Karl implied Dennis should be the MVP. He played truly beautiful basketball in this series.

But Seattle loss the series because Kemp didn't get enough help from his team mates until game 4 and 5. with exception of game 3. Kemp was close to unstoppable. I do remember Dennis Rodman pissing of Kemp and getting him to foul out in game six. But that was about it for Dennis....i forgot that dennis did lead the 96 Finals in Rebounds.Still Kemp played all around basketball.

Seeing this in 2020, 24 years later has open my eyes on how the bulls were close to lose this series and how impactful and smart Rodman. Thanks so much for such basketball delight!
You have to take into account what Jordan brings to the table, and his impact on the game. He opens up the court for his teammates. His defense was also dominate and his offense was enough to beat the Sonics. Rodman was incredible though.
You couldn’t wait to bust a nut of excuses could you? Jordan shot 41% and below in 3 games. the other two he was hovering over 500. His efg and tfg were nowhere close to number 1. How did he open up the court for his teammates? His assist percentage was 4th on the team this series. How was his defense dominate? His defensive rating was 6th! He guarded Hersey Hawkins for most of the series. Hawkins averaged 12.3 points in the playoffs and 13 when guarded by Michael. MJ only led both teams in points in two games.

I watched the 1996 NBA finals series in its entirety for I was an MJ fan, but I'm glad that what I felt back then, that rodman should have been the MVP, is now being presented and analyzed properly. It is high time for the NBA to recognize that a player's overall impact on a championship series should be used as the basis for determining the MVP.

Dennis definitely got his SC highlights. He'd tap the ball up 7 times to get it away from the opponent and just keeping jumping perfectly in time with it. It was cool to watch. He took competitive rebounding to whole new levels.

I agree with everything you said, except for the " without him, we don't win any of those titles". I'm a true Bulls fan and I was there for those 6 rings. Rodman was a super liability offensively. The Bulls were litteraly playing 4 vs 5 on offense and nobody wanted to play with him in the league.
And the 96-97 season proves you wrong. Firs of all, Rodman missed about 20 games in the regular season but the Bulls still won 69 games.
Now in the playoffs, 34 years old Michael Jordan had to lead the Bulls in points/rbds/assists/steals/blks basically throughtout the entire playoffs for the Bulls to win a championschip, partly because of Rodman who played very poorly and couldn't get a rebound.
So, the facts prove that you're wrong about the impact of Rodman. And I love Rodman to death but don't forget that he was a role player.
Megadrive Rodman was not brought to Chicago for the regular season, only the playoffs. He was only a role player but he was a dominant one. It's not as if the Bulls didn't win their first three titles with a scoring liability on the floor, remember Cartwright? Rodman was important for rebounding and defense against big men like Shaq. Jordan or Pippen couldn't guard them and the perimeter. So I stand by my answer, we don't win those three without him, period.

Larry, Michael and Bill Russell are always remembered for their impact on winning games but sometimes other players like Rodman get lost in the nostalgia of the reputation and numbers of the aforementioned.

Dennis Rodman is a one of a kind player. Never duplicated. I think Michael knows that his presence was the reason for that threepeat.
Admittedly I thought, this guy is crazy, when looking at the title. Your arguments were sound and video is well put together. I found myself agreeing with you...I always knew Rodman was talented...I think he is extremely underrated because of his personality.

I watched this whole series and Rodman was in there heads from the beginning to me it was one of his best times playing and people don't really know Rodman could play offense very well but he alway's played his role on any team he played on and he made it look easy playing but also sometimes like he didn't really care when he would shoot his free throws i like to think can you imagine if he really played offense like i have seen him play so there's no doubt Rodman Was the MVP......
Bad boys never get the recog they deserve. Look at bill laimbeer, hasnt been inducted to the HOF despite his importance to the pistons.

Barely getting around to the video. You've made a great case for Rodman. I was explaining to my kid how important the role players were to championship teams, and how people that didn't have the basketball made all the difference in the world. The best example I could give was Dennis, and how he kept teams from focusing on Jordan which impacted all of the games. Now I have a video I can share that makes the point.
I agree. I was saying this for years. And now especially after looking at these analytics, it proves how I always felt. But it makes sense, because of Dennis's image, which to me is the ONLY reason, he didn't get it..

One of the best sports moments was Dennis Rodman's HOF speech. He was a unique, spectacular player. I'm glad the NBA realized that.
dennis' impact to every games was impecable. what he does in the game are not shown in tally sheet. his hassle and hardwork helped the bulls win the championships. its just bcoz his counterpart was mj.
Rodman supplemented Jordan. MVP is the player whose impact is more sorely missed. I dont see the Bulls having any chance at all without Jordan.

Rodman's defense and rebounding won that series more than Jordan's scoring. Jordan and Pippen missed plenty of shots that series as well as the other bulls players. But Rodman getting rebounds and passing the ball back and keeping possessions alive is what beat the Sonics. Keep in mind the Sonics couldn't score in the first 3 games, but figured out their offense in games 4 &5 and had a lead in game 6. Rodman's defense and rebounding made the difference.
Additionally, the injury to Nate McMillan really hurt the Sonics because he was able to setup the offense and score at times.

I personally saw that series and was shocked when Rodman didn't win MVP. But we all knew why he didn't win with MJ on the team.

Dennis Rodman is definitely the MVP of the 1996 finals. We should ask the NBA organization to give it to Dennis Rodman. I'm pretty sure Michael Jordan knows Dennis was the key player that made the difference in the 1996 finals. Without his contribution on defense, rebounding and key assists, they would not have won the finals.

People need to also understand this, Andre igoudala (in 2015) had the same situation as rodman this series. They both had championship level impact to their teams. Also if you compare Jordan and Steph's statlines they are damn near the same, whether you put scoring, efficiency, impact etc. They both had the narrative of a defender locking them up those series.

MJ averaged 27.3 points (his lowest finals series but if it was MJ’s only finals he played in his 27.3 would still be like 12th or something for career finals scoring average) it was 12 points higher than the nearest Bull. He played elite defence as always while Rodman’s opposite Kemp averaged 23.3 & 10 rebounds on 55% shooting. Rodman was excellent in 1996 and excellent in the 1996 finals (his production slowed after 1996 but especially for the 97 & 98 playoffs) a case can be made for Rodman he was excellent defensively and a monster on the boards but to say he deserved finals MVP is reaching a bit. He was excellent and a case can be made but finals MVP went to the right guy.

But, this is a very compelling case. I also believe you're spot on with the reasons behind it. The NBA had a love/hate relationship with Rodman. He was on the brink of being kicked out of the league many times. But, his skill and passion meant that people were invested in him(whether good or bad).

This is probably why the Bulls were 72 and 10, it wasn't JUST the Michael Jordan show, they had many weapons on that team and Rodman was certainly one of the biggest. I agree with you though, Rodman deserved that MVP.
Rodman will always have my respect as a player and i will never give a fuck what he does in his personal life as its his life to live not mine. But damn this guy could play and really deserves a whole lot more credit then he gets.
After having watched the whole video, and being a fan of MJ, I must agree with you. Dennis should have been the MVP. You put forward all the evidence that can attest to that truth. However, in my heart, from now on, Dennis is the MVP of the 1996 Finals.

6'7" 210 lbs. Shut down much bigger guys his whole career. As much a fruitcake as we was off the court, he was a force of nature on it. Underrated passer too, which is why he worked so well in the triangle.

So what you need to do is go figure out how to siphon out that feminine energy inside and don't come in here with those silly comparisons like Kerr is better than Tracy McGrady bs. Next time use companions like Iverson and McGrady or Kerr Vs Paxson.

Great video. Rodman will always be considered a bad boy, even though he only looked the part. Rodman just Loved baseball. Being a diehard Piston fan, Rodman was MVP every time he stepped on the court. I enjoyed Rodman's joy after making a point. I remember that series well. And it was obvious that Dennis deserved that MVP award to everybody in attendance. After the Bulls epic record setting season, it seemed they were exhausted by the time the finals rolled around. The indefatigable Rodman just kept going. He was almost superhuman in endurance. And he seemed to even lift his team with scoring as he felt the crowds reaction to his success in the boards and the head game, which he alone seemed to be playing and winning. The guy almost single handedly took out Schrempf, Brickowski, and Perkins. It seemed Rodman t went into the series with the realization that he needed to raise his level of play... And that's exactly what the Bulls needed.

Haha what? You are gravely mistaken. Rodman was very good this series, but he shat the bed in ‘97, and got benched in ‘98. He literally would not have played in ‘98 if Pippen wasn’t hurt, as the Bulls best lineup was Harper, Jordan, Pippen, Kukoc, and Kerr/Longley.
Agreed. The series with Orlando the year prior really showed they needed a presence, really lacked a defender/rebounder. Rodman really was the missing piece.
