The sexism is that at the time this commercial was made women needed to do all they could to please their husbands. Otherwise they were thought to be disappointments.
Uh, the way he bends her arm and wrist was fukt. These old commercials present men treating women like ragdolls. Or like pointing at their face, saying their coffee (their “task”; a woman’s “task” is not to make a man coffee- a person can make their own coffee). These old boomer ass commercials are hard to watch in that they make me cringe. Women in the USA throughout its history (herstory bruh) has a ton of instances where women would be considered (socially) the “property” of her husband, “Mr.” Mr. Fakemin Men have this “Mr.” designation But Women have Miss, Mrs. Ms. Etc. - Worst of all, Roe V. So wait, they perk the coffee and then dry it out and put it into a jar, and then store it on a shelf at a store? This was better coffee than Carol made?
How much better this could have gone if he had said "Oh, I heard about this new brand of coffee ... the guys are raving about it at work, and I'd love to try it with you... I'm going to stop by the store on my way home from work and get us some!" Problem solved, husband comes off looking like attentive, involved hero who wants to share even the small things like nice coffee with his mate. Life's full of choices, I guess.
Well said! Not liking some of these comments, however yours was stated perfectly! No, the husband is not a monster for saying what he said, and no, this commercial was not bluntly sexist, but this comment shows the perfect balance of the roles of men and women, and how both men and women should be involved in simple jobs like buying and making coffee.
Okay so the man works, he brings the money in to support his family. His wife doesn't have a job and its "sexist" for her to please him even though hes been working all day? But if the roles were switched and the man made the shitty coffee and his wife complained nobody would even hint at sexism.
joseph linden joe since you talk like you're smart you should know women were pressured into giving up their jobs once they got married so they'd have to stay home and spit out her husbands kids and clean up after him . and it wasn't like it was easy for a woman to get employed at a good paying job in the first place back then . this ad is sexist because it implies it's the woman's job to serve the man and go out of her way to make sure he doesn't throw a fit over his coffee that he's so clearly 'entitled " to because he gets to set his own goals and make his own money cause he's a man . if a woman wanted to be a cop back then she'd get laughed at .
But he's out all fucking day working so this woman has a house to live in. So ah yes guy you've been working 10 hours and when you get back make your own damn shit because my female independence blah. Id feel "entitled" aswell if i was making sure my family had food and a house but nah men should do everything right? Women are too precious but also strong wait what? How can women be strong, intelligent and independent if feminists like you like to make women out to be nothing more than victims. And big whoop if it was sexist it was 60 years ago its not like this anymore so you have no genuine argument at all. But you wouldn't bitch if it was a guy getting scolded for his coffee? it kind of is a woman's job to spit out kids you are biologically designed for it and i don't think men can reproduce with other men (crazy right). I don't talk like I'm smart, i am smart sweetie.
I'm a woman. It makes sense to me. If my husband didn't like the taste of something I made, I'd switch to a different brand, too. Why spend good money on something he doesn't like? He'll just dump it out and it will be wasted. This isn't sexism. This is logic. My hubby is the cook in the family. We tried a new taco seasoning because it was cheaper. I didn't like it. I told him so. We went back to our old brand of seasoning. Problem solved. Guess that makes me a sexist, too? Expecting my husband to do the cooking because he's better at it and enjoys it more than I do?
What I find hilarious is that whoever wrote the description of this video didn't realize they wrote, "Policeman Ed complains to his wife Carol, that the boys down at the station taste better than her coffee".. Hey look, if Policeman Ed is tasting the boys, that's none of my business, it's just not a fair comparison to coffee. 😂😂
How is this commercial sexist? The guy doesn't like his wife's coffee. How would she feel if she didn't like her husband's coffee? Disliking somebody's coffee is an equal opportunity insult.
+Nan Fagan There is nothing sexist about this commercial. People can be really annoying these days labeling anything sexist just because a wife actually cares...sad time we're living in today when people actually think there is something wrong with that.
You Tube is always educational! We all have slightly different "takes" on most topics. I assumed everyone would see what I considered 'sexism' in this commercial. I'm 52..a male WASP..so not the most PC person online. But then I saw honest comments from people asking how this was sexist. My view is..no matter how polite the cute husband was..his attitude is that it is the sole purvey of his wife to provide him excellent coffee!..and she responds in kind..by virtually jumping hoops to obtain it for him. I'm male..and not as polite as this good woman in the ad..I would have replied.."Ah..you don't like it?..buy and brew it yourself!"
In a time where the husband supported the family and the wife kept up the house, there's not reason this situation is wrong. Besides, as a housewife or a working wife, if my husband said the coffee was terrible then I would go out and buy coffee he liked.
Reason it's considered "sexist" is because of how the husband is blaming his wife for the poor coffee. It's the brand of coffee, it's not her. LOL, silly people!
This isn't that sexist, it just portrays traditional gender roles. SOME OF US like to please our men and aren't all ultra-feminist, thank you very much.
Yup. I mean honestly I enjoy making my boyfriend his breakfast in the morning and if he told me the coffee was too bitter or whatever, I'd just make it differently. I think that some women are really sensitive about the 'good little wife' expectation of them and I know that some women hold resentment about it. I think a woman shouldn't be ashamed if she wants to fulfill a domestic role any more than if she wants to have a career-oriented or non-married life. Got off topic a little lol. My bad :P
poor guy, he doesnt even work at the precinct... he just has a hard time saying no. I love how stressed out and in a panic she was about the coffee when she ran into good ol' reliable Mr.McGreggor
She was expected to call the man at the grocery store, "Mr McGregor," yet he called her on a first-name basis. That was typical back then. In the newspaper, a married woman was referred to as Mrs. (first and last name of her husband.) So "Betty Jones" married to "Robert Jones" would be referred to in the newspaper as "Mrs. Robert Jones."
This isn't sexist. Most wives stayed home and had their own duties to keep the house running. Women not being allowed to work might be sexist, but the act of a woman at home preparing food/drinks for her husband is not sexist.
This is the third sexist coffee commercial I've watched tonight, and by far, the nicest. In the other ones the husbands were more of an asshole. At least he felt bad when he told his wife her coffee sucked
@MostRemarkable1 My parents were from Richmond, Virginia, former capital of the Confederacy, and it was just nicer back in the 50s and early 60s. But I think that de-segregation was a bad idea because it separated the races further. After Richmond Public schools were de-segregated, most whites moved away from the city. In recent years, they have moved back and its getting better. But I believe it was better how they ran things back in the 50s. They kept the neighborhoods safe.
I'm glad the man said it wasn't good. I'd hate to see my husband drink the coffee just because he doesn't want to hurt my feelings. That or he makes it for me c:
The satisfaction with life lowers because responsibility sucks. Everything is easier to deal with when all of your choices have already been made for you. Many things were so much simpler back then :)
How is this sexist? God forbid she does something different to make her husband happy with his coffee! And her guy held her hand, apologized and gently told her... So, much for honesty. Perhaps, he should've kept his mouth shut and suffered in silence because his feelings and needs don't matter.
+Becs Marlow The roles of husband and wife have been destroyed by feminism. No wonder the divorce rate is high. And men nowadays are simply not getting married anymore. We all have roles, sorry you women feel you got the shaft in that department. Until we return to men leading the house and women being a companion for him then the family structure will continue to suffer
***** There is nothing sexist going on here. If she's the one routinely making the coffee, she should want her husband to enjoy it. Plus, if she's a housewife, she should take pride in what comes out of her kitchen and what she does. If she didn't care about her man's happiness when it came to something as simple as coffee, then maybe he should've married Becky Sue instead. Btw, I'm a woman who LIKES men. I happen to be married to one. My husband enjoys my cooking, but he doesn't like every dish. I don't accuse him of being a sexist jerk just because he asks me to make a few adjustments. WHY? Because his needs matter and I want him to continue enjoying my meals. So, I make changes to suit his tastes... No biggie, no politics needed!
+Becs Marlow No worries. When I say I like men, I mean just that. I'm just not arbitrarily antagonistic towards them. For my husband who I love, I'd just switch the coffee and move on! lol
+Mocha Gypsy He could've went and bought the coffee his job served and told her to make that kind. If she asked why, he could just say "cos I like it."
She has to mind house full of modern conveniences and appliances while he has to go to work all day and at least she could make him a decent cup of REAL coffee. Her solution is Folgers INSTANT??
Actually, I've seen a number of Folger's commercials from that decade and he is probably the nicest of the husbands. You're point would be better illustrated by a commercial such as Mrs. Olsen Saves a Barbecue. Nowadays, if a husband spoke to his wife the way the guy at the Barbecue did, he might wake up to find the bed on fire!
A better conclusion to this odious commercial: 'Oh Mr. McGregor thank you, but I'm going home to tell him to shove his coffee where the sun don't shine'.
"Carol, this coffee is terrible. And while we're at it, so is the sex. So I'm going to go peruse the latest issue of Juggs and rub one out before I go to work."
You're right. How can this be sexist? The guy doesn't like his wife's coffee. If he likes the way the coffee's made at the police station, perhaps one of the guys there can go to his house and make it there. Or better yet, the wife should tell him, "Make it yourself, Buster!"
@UndeadMystic I think the sexist part is that its implying that its her job to provide delicious coffee, that she should feel offended that the police station makes better coffee than she does And when she runs to the grocery store to ask for help to correct her problem, the person who tells her whats what is...another man. If he doesn't like her coffee he should make his own. And she ought to be able to solve her own problems.
Policeman Ed complains to his wife Carol that the boys at the station tastes better then the coffee that she makes.... The boys tastes better???? What????
I think it's less about the cop and more about the general message that a woman should fret about not pleasing her man in something that's trivial and only (insert product here) can relieve that anxiety.
awww, and to think how he could have shown off his manliness by making the BEST coffee EVER for his lady - plus it would be an excuse to bring it to her in bed in the morning, thus increasing the time spent in bed.
The ad is sexist because the situation assumes it's HER job to make sure HIS coffee tastes good, and sexist in assuming that it's HER job to solve the problem once HIS displeasure has been announced. When someone goes to the trouble of making you coffee, you should be polite humble and grateful for their effort, and if you don't like something, you find polite ways of replacing said horridness instead of issuing commands and being rude.
I swear people are getting more and more confused by each day. People get butthurt by honestly everything nowadays. Chill the fuck up! Please go watch Undoomed or something... It's a medicine for your brain
This commercial's not sexist, The guy simply doesn't like the his wife's coffee. It also can be that the wife doesn't like the way that her husband makes the coffee.
It's a 'commercial' at a time when women 'wanted' to please their man. My mother didn't 'fret' like this woman. She just did her best to make Pop happy. She made GREAT coffee that just happened to be Folgers. But she didn't buy it because of the commercial. It was...at that time and to 'us'... a great product. But as I said the commercial was an image of its time & not necessarily sexist 'then', but would be booed as such NOW. Which is sad. Why shouldn't you want to please the one you love?
It's true. I think it's only sexist if it's expected that the wife make the coffee all the time, and he never bothers to make her a good cup of coffee every once in a while.
I've just thought about something. Is our interpretation of the 60s based on TV ads and other media? What if these were actually outrageous even at this era? Imagine what people might think in 40 years ahead about our way of thinking by analyzing what's aired today?
@PsychoBatcave He was not real disrespectful and controlling, he told her that her bad coffee was bad. She did what you do for people you love and try to make them happy by fixing it. Sorry they did not set up the entire context of their marriage in a one minute commercial, maybe she wanted to be at home, plenty of women did and still do.
What's with all the grocers in the 1960s television commercials wearing bowties (Mr. Whipple, etc.)? I worked in a grocery story for one summer in the early '70s, and we sure as heck didn't wear ties of any kind.
the sexist part is that bad coffee is portrayed as an awful horrible thing and she rushes out to fix like she has nothing better to do but please her man
lol this wasnt sexist at all...she just wanted to make good coffee. If my husband told me my coffee was horrible, I would probably change up my coffee-making process too.
As I said before, you can't compare those two things together. I, for one, don't like people doing stuff for me cause I can do it myself. And I cook for me and my boyfriend some times, but he doesn't force me to do it. I do whatever I want and he does whatever he wants. And if a man tries to force something on me I just go away and let him do it by himself. I'm no maid, I'm not supposed to do stuff when people tell me, especially not men. They can do it themselves.
Because it implies that a woman (or more specifically wife) has nothing better to do than make her husband coffee. And that she should be worrying about that. After all, that's the job of the homemaker whilst the man goes to work.
What I don't understand is how both parents working is supposed to make family life better. If both need jobs, the demand for employment goes up. If the demand for employment goes up by roughly double, the wages go down. It ends up being this giant web with a fat spider hanging out at the center eating all the families and shitting out divorce papers. Honestly, how are two people supposed to get along if they are both coming home from work and just want to be left alone or comforted?
I find that there is a charm in the way the voices sound in these old commercials
I don't see the sexism in this, but I know the husband was rude as hell.
Santana Perkins at least he was honest
The sexism is that at the time this commercial was made women needed to do all they could to please their husbands. Otherwise they were thought to be disappointments.

I think the sexist part is that its implying that its her job to provide delicious coffee, that she should feel offended that the police station makes better coffee than she does
And when she runs to the grocery store to ask for help to correct her problem, the person who tells her whats what is...another man.
If he doesn't like her coffee he should make his own. And she ought to be able to solve her own problems.
I can only imagine the Sargent peering in from the window quietly muttering "You...bitch." as a single tear escapes his eye.
This is implying that a wife should make better tasting coffee than a police sargeant.
awww, and to think how he could have shown off his manliness by making the BEST coffee EVER for his lady - plus it would be an excuse to bring it to her in bed in the morning, thus increasing the time spent in bed.
Lol, like the damn coffee is the most important thing in her life. Hahahaa
@SIGNALSTAT Hey! My comment wasn't meant to take your comment down! It was genuinely funny! :)
Why shouldn't you want to please the one you love?
lol
He probably gets better donuts at the police station too.
It's true. I think it's only sexist if it's expected that the wife make the coffee all the time, and he never bothers to make her a good cup of coffee every once in a while.
My coffee tastes terrible you say? make it yourself i'm going to Duncan Donuts -.-
I'm a girl and I don't understand how this is sexist? Can someone explain?
It's not, sweety.
folgers made many other commercials were husbands insult there wife's coffee so there trying to say that woman can't make coffee
NO! They were trying to say that THAT woman made bad coffee because she didn't use Folgers!
Michael Incata It astounds me how our world has become so sensitive! There's nothing sexist about this, only feminists would say so.
I've just thought about something.
Is our interpretation of the 60s based on TV ads and other media? What if these were actually outrageous even at this era? Imagine what people might think in 40 years ahead about our way of thinking by analyzing what's aired today?
keep your man by not giving him shitty instant coffee
of which all instant coffee is shitty
@PsychoBatcave He was not real disrespectful and controlling, he told her that her bad coffee was bad. She did what you do for people you love and try to make them happy by fixing it. Sorry they did not set up the entire context of their marriage in a one minute commercial, maybe she wanted to be at home, plenty of women did and still do.
see how happy she was to please her man lol
What's with all the grocers in the 1960s television commercials wearing bowties (Mr. Whipple, etc.)? I worked in a grocery story for one summer in the early '70s, and we sure as heck didn't wear ties of any kind.
The only difference I see is that marriages didn't get completely derailed back then over trivial things like bad coffee!
0:28 "No you stupid woman! It's new! New instant coffee! Do you want five across the eyes?!"
... that's kinda how it comes across. -.-
A.G.
This guy says that instant coffee tastes better than his wife's home brewed stuff? He doesn't know good coffee!
the sexist part is that bad coffee is portrayed as an awful horrible thing and she rushes out to fix like she has nothing better to do but please her man
Commercials are like that, even today. Nothing to do with sexism. Commercials are just dumb.
Folgers saves another marriage.
lol this wasnt sexist at all...she just wanted to make good coffee. If my husband told me my coffee was horrible, I would probably change up my coffee-making process too.
At least now we can all look back on sexism and laugh!
Plot twist, they're actually brother and sister
Look like "New Folgers" is also an aphrodisiac.
I want one of these where the man is in the women's role
Carol, I'm sorry to break it to you but Ed's not talking about the coffee...
damn we still drink this
lol....i was more concerned with the "Made from Fresh Perked"....How do u accomplish dry grounds from "fresh Perked" lol
That's why u gonna be alone 4 life
Because it implies that a woman (or more specifically wife) has nothing better to do than make her husband coffee. And that she should be worrying about that. After all, that's the job of the homemaker whilst the man goes to work.
She is sooo pretty!
