Benny Hill was brilliant. I didn't know of him and only started watching in the mid 1980's, but you couldn't walk away without a smile on your face. RIP..

I love since decades The Benny Hill Show. Extremely self-aggrandizing fools have robbed many viewers of their favorite show and certainly deprived Benny Hill of his purpose in life and thus his health. Benny Hill was no accident and all credit to this British man who bought years of laughter to the whole world. Thank you Benny Hill!
Benny Hill had a wise policy for his tv shows: he avoided the over-exposure of a weekly series in favour of just one or two a year, so you knew that when The Benny Hill Show appeared in the schedules, it would be the high point of the viewing week, and so it was, always sharp and polished, and now standing the test of time, which is more than can be said of the work of his critics who decided to make him unpopular.

Benny's main schtick was classic British smut, along with the Carry On series and such shows as Are You Being Served ("My pussy doesn't like getting wet" - Mrs Slocum). It generally doesn't work particularly well outside Britain, though Brits loved it. He knew his audience well. I'm surprised that it was popular in the US.
