Good video. I fish chatterbaits the majority of the time, in shallow ponds with lots of moss and weeds. I’ve definitely came to the conclusion that a heavy power is best, along with the slower tip. Heavy power is good for all of the grass ripping and getting a good hook set IMO. Plus if the fish dives into some moss it helps a ton to get them through it.
This was a fantastic video - well thought out, providing your specific recommendations, while still allowing everyone to consider their own use of the chatterbait.
I can’t wait to see more of these type of videos on other baits. Subscribed based on this series - keep them coming!
Alpha Angler's Chatterbound changed the game for me. Absolutely amazing rod, great video
Man this is exactly what I need. I’m new to bass fishing and I get so confused on what action I need for all the different baits and lures to throw. So looking forward to this series!
Me too man, my brain hurts from trying to figure it out. Thankfully "The Hook Up Tackle" is here.
Love my EG combat stick H glass rod! You can really tell the rod does all the work for you when a fish bites! It’s good for cranking to add as well! Thanks Hookup! I’ll be in store next week coming from Cali! Rip wallet
Dope! Excited to have you stop by!
what a great vid. i've used the 13fishing muse black rod which is a 6'10" medium for so long. it's lighter than the adrena 6'10" glass. i get away with throwing 1/2oz setups on it but mostly throw 3/8oz. but, i've got to say that 6'10" adrena is a winner for me. i've wanted to give the 7'4" 2oz adrena a shot. the train of thought for me is to have a sub 7 for accuracy and a 7+ for bombing and deeper chatter fishing. regardless, great vid that really does cover it all for chatterbaits.
I‘m considering to purchase a adrena 610 glass!Does it work well for the 3/8oz jackhammer with a Yamamoto zako or too soft?
@@xiahua2302 runs 3/8 oz smoother than sh!t from a duck's a$$.
@@xiahua2302 yes works very well.
Man what a great video. I ordered a 7'3 dobyns rod(not glass), for my chatter bait, and then came and watched this. I reckon i should have watched this first. Guess there are worse things then buying the wrong rod. At least I can use the new rod for my spinner baits
Kinda late but depending on which dobyn's rod it could be suitable for chatterbaits
I'm a great mega bass fan, but on chatterbaits, I elected the St Croix legend glass rod..7'4 heavy..Great rod for chatterbaits..The rod is paired up with a Diawa Steez 6:31 for power and control..
Love it!! You mentioned us poor saps who only like to fish with 2-3 rods. A great video idea would be to identify all of the possible baits (there's like 20+) and maybe identify 3 rod/reel combos that could handle all of the various styles of baits. Obviously, those rods wouldn't handle them all perfectly, but it would at least allow it to throw with some success.
Let's see a video on frog rods. Looking for a shorter rod to use in closenaround cover.
Yes ASAP! Lol
Great video!!!! Thank you for all the great and perfect information!
Great video, super informative, thanks. Looking forward to the series.
Stellar presentation jam packed with info... Looking forward to this series especially finesse applications... Thank you🙏
Thank you for watching!
Excellent video! Can’t wait for more videos like this to come!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome info once again. Can’t wait for the next video Love your channel
Thank you for watching!
That. Evergreen Combat stick is just like you said a little chunky in weight but that glass rod keeps the large jaws hooked till you land em. I’ll sacrifice a little comfort if it keeps catching me them greenbacks 🙌🏽
Thanks for watching man!
What rod would you pick for a 3/8 or a 1/2 jackhammer with a zako trailer
Great stuff fellas, appreciate your attention to detail. What are your thoughts on the St. Croix Victory 7'2 Mh Mf for chatterbaits... or other techniques for that rod?
Im loving my 7'3" Dobyns champion xp 736cb Glass heavy
Much better price!
I have used that one too in the past. Found that a little too much while the 7’2” Expride MH Glass not enough so hoping the Valley Hill 7’4” Glass is the Goldilocks
@@matthewpriestley7202 too much/ not enough what? Power?
@@jamesh7469 its too heavy the dobyns. Ive had it, wore me out after 1hr
7'2mh expride glass is the crem de la crem for 3/8-1/2oz chatters
Thanks again guys , keep them coming
Thank you for watching!
Love the info in this video. I don’t have the funds for any of the rods you guys priced as I am an family man and usually fish from the bank so 200 for a rod is a lot most of my combos are about that price.
Thank you for watching! Take the topics we discussed in here, and apply it to whatever rods you end up shopping for!
@@thehookuptackle_usa haha that’s what I try but I do really appreciate the info it’s really good stuff!
Check out 13 fishings chat-R-crank rod. $100 or $110, and it’s lasted me two seasons of heavy use. They’re coming out with a newer model this winter that’s part of their fate V3 line. Highly recommend.
Pistol grip roll cast 🔥 I still love to throw a spinnerbait or chatterbait on my pistol grip glass rod 5 ft 6 talking about tug of war
Tons of game in short rods and short grips 👍
Wish they still made the old school style ugly stick that was a 5'6 pistol grip🥺🥺🥲🥲
Great info guy's.... I didn't realize I was such a fishing rod nerd, lol
Welcome to the club! 👍
for you which is the best for chatter bait?
the evergreen is not very heavy? 200 grams ?
How would the spec r handle chatterbaits?
Guess what. I throw a 3/8 jig typically with my stone cold swim/chatter from Irod and love it …all around good rod if you are fishing from a kayak
Hey Ben, do you have any experience with the Daiwa Steez AGS 7' 5" MHH bottom contact rod? I purchased one this past spring and havent really felt its performance justifies its price. Possibly looking at a similar model in the Megabass lineup of Destroyers (P5, USA, Carbon head etc.)
Ben you said chatterbait and spinnerbaits rods should not be the same
When I look at the rods you mentioned the description is for spinnerbaits also
Some manufacturers try to dummy it down for the buyers, and list a bunch of things the rod is “good for”. If you’re getting one rod to do a bunch of different stuff, then you may end up throwing a chatterbait and a spinnerbait on the same rod. But if you’re looking to refine your chatterbait fishing, then we have to break away from that mentality and get a rod that’s correct for Chatterbaits.
@@thehookuptackle_usa yes but you're recomending the same Megabass P5 The Dark Sleeper Rod for spinerbaits in a Specific spinerbait video... it makes a little bit of confusion...
Anyway it is one of my favourite videos the value of information is huge!
Thanks!
Cashion 7’1 chatterbait rod !!
Hey man, recently I bought a MH Moderate glass rod for chatterbaits and crankbaits. My friends told me to get the Heavy Moderate Glass, but they are sold out everywhere.. so i went with the MH Mod. just wanted your thoughts on this, will this be an issue throwing chatterbaits? thanks
Would that Rebellion rod be a good choice for spinnerbaits as well??
Faster action rod would be better for spinnerbaits.
@@thehookuptackle_usa interesting... I always considered a Chatterbait the same a spinnerbait.
How about a rod video for traps? Some say a cranking rod is best, others say a jerkbait style rod is best for ripping out of grass...
I gathered that Ben wants Geoff to carry his load OR that he envies Geoff's load-carrying abilities.
Not sure how to respond to this one...
I feel loved
Diablo Spec-R
7’2” xx
This is the best graphite rod Megabass makes for the chatterbait 👍
It was recommended by Ben a couple of years ago. Really cool to see you guys on UA-cam. I’m even happier to order from you guys and get my items in three days or less. I also appreciate the genuine concerns you demonstrate to your customers. Your competitors are not on this level
@@liltoasty thank you for your business man! 👊
@@thehookuptackle_usa I am looking forward to the Holiday sale. Feel like dropping some nuggets my way?
What about a 99.00 rod?
Ben going after tacticalbassins buyers guides 👌
Of course it has to cost $500. That cheap old rod KVD has used for 30 years simply won't work anymore.
The chatter bait is the spinnerbaits drunk cousin.
My solution is to just buy all the rods
This is a great solution :)!
We all need help with our loads now and then 🤭
I swooped in like a pterodactyl when I got a notification for the Hook Up Tackle
Awesome man! Thank you for watching!
I'm scared of dinosaurs
Shimano Expride A 7'2" M/H Glass is by far my favorite chatter bait rod. It's absolutely amazing.
I'm thinking getting that rod
You definitely will love the rod.
What else is it good for
I really like my 1st Gen Megabass Levante Diablo Spec R for chatterbaits. Knock on wood I hope I never break it as I've used my buddys 2nd Gen DSR and I find there's a significant enough difference where its just not the same. Braid to fluoro leader and I'm crushing em.
Dont really fish chatterbaits but dam learned alot. Another great job guys
Thank you for watching!
Definitely don't overlook the Dobyns DC 736CB glass, landed multiple 7 and 8 pound blue cats on it last year using a chatterbait. Worked good on the bass too.. 😂😂
Very informative as always, thanks Ben! Another option I have found to be a great Chatterbait rod is the Poisom Adrena 7’3” medium heavy, moderate fast action rod. I’ve used it all this year for chatterbaits and absolutely love it, I primarily throw 3/8-1/2oz chatterbaits and it’s done me wonders 👌🏽
Awesome man! Thank you for sharing!
For the budget guys the Daiwa aird x 7’3 MH has that good parabolic taper for $50
The main thing I fought myself back and forth on with chatterbait fishing was line. I found straight flouro was best when fishing grass because of the delay coming out of the grass when popping it to get a reaction bite the fish had a chance to eat it(and more stealth) vs braid to leader. Had a glass rod and like the sensitivity of the graphite but personal preference
The Jackhammer rod is the ONLY rod for a chatterbait. Any other rod, you're wasting your time. If you don't like it, it's because you don't harness the shear power the Jackhammer holds
Rods are personal. I cant skip with anything longer than a 6'6" rod.
After using graphite rods of many actions for chatterbaits, glass works better for me.
There are times my jig rod is used to throw chatterbaits. (Graphite)
Could you do a vid on crankbait rods like for lighter stuff (osp blitz & z-crank)!?!?
Absolutely!
I'm looking for a shorter rod for throwing chatterbaits. 6' 10" would be ideal. Any ideas?
I think you misunderstand what I'm doing. I fish a timbered reservoir and I need a shorter rod to make accurate casts and a rod with enough backbone to drag them out of the timber!!!!
The Expride 7’7” H Moderate works great for the 3/4 1oz chatterbait and common 6-7 in swimbaits.
Notice how the NRX+ 883C BJR isn't mentioned in this video...
I mainly fish Chatterbaits. Have tons of glass, composite, and graphite rods for my Chatterbaits. If you fish high heavy grass waters. Look into the 7'3 MH Duckett Silverado. It's over rated in its power. It fishes like a MH-Mod Rod. I have found its great for ripping out of grass easy and yet the parabolic bend is great for pining fish. Wasn't meant for it but works so well fishing through grass without having that ton of spongy feeling trying to clear the bait free of grass. Cheaper, well built, light weight. 14lbs Sunline FC Sniper, 6.3.1 reel
The amount of info packed into this video is amazing!!
thank you for watching my friend!
Don’t ever disrespect me looking like Bob Saget’s little brother…. 😂
My is poison adrena 7/2 m
Super informative channel new subscriber for sure 💯
New subscriber based on this video alone! I am just starting to look for a chatterbait rod. Learned why my current rods don’t work with them....about to go click on the link to the Megabass rod, afraid I can’t afford that adjustable butt, sure would like to as this will be used on a kayak, would be really helpful. Thanks for a great video!
You can throw it on a Graphite MH or Heavy fast action rod too. Just use monofilament or a fluorocarbon that has some stretch like invisx. Todd Auten got 2nd in the Bassmaster classic this year throwing a Jackhammer on the same rod he uses for flipping jigs. He just used mono with the jackhammer to accomplish the same thing as that moderate fiberglass rod does.
A spinnerbait is a jig but a bladed jig isnt? Not the best explanation.
Weird...I prefer braid + leader with glass or composite rods.
This was one of the most educational videos on rods that i have ever seen Great job sir!!
Our of the hundred or so videos about this subject, this is by far the best, most informative video I’ve seen. Your a rockstar man keep up with the great content !
Ben, I mainly fish from a kayak. I've started looking at multipurpose rods to maximize my options. I recently bought a Destroyer JDM Wild Bunch. What are your thoughts for this rod for Chatterbaits? Great info BTW!
Wild Bunch is amazing for multi purpose, but it’s not a great chatterbait/Reaction rod. It’s more of a soft plastics/spinnerbait/frog/small Swimbait rod. What you’ll want to look for in a multi purpose reaction rod to compliment your Wild Bunch, is something with a regular taper (bends through the middle) in a MH ish power.
Look at the Cashion rod chatterbait rod. Super sensitive, great bend, lighter. Just amazing.
More vids like these plz!
Keep up the great work. I enjoy y’all’s content, very informative
Hi Ben, pointing out the pivot point in the chatter bait vs a spinner bait was an ah-ha moment for me and lit a light bulb. I used to think they would be good on the same rod. Excellent content! You do a masterful job with your breakdowns. Thank you!
They absolutely are great on the same rod. But to be fair, I throw them both on braid to leader.
Ben, what does the 7'1mh Valkerie weigh and how short is it overall with the grip shortened?
I throw bladed jigs a lot, like A LOT A LOT. When I first started using them however many years ago, I didn't think the rod really mattered. They seemed to work on Heavy, Medium Heavy, Medium, Medium Light powers, ExtraFast, Fast, ModFast, Moderate, or even Slow actions.
I was dead wrong. The rod makes an incredible difference. A few years ago I got a spinnerbait rod that I loved. I recommended this rod to all my buddies, a few of them actually listened, used them and loved them as well. I thought I had finally figured it out.
This year, admittedly on impulse, I picked up one of the Evergreen Combat Sticks. Only NOW do I really have it figured out. That rod is just perfect for throwing bladed jigs. Of course that should come as no surprise as Brett Hite helped design it. Really my only complaint is the lack of hook keeper, but that is easily remedied with a Cal Coast Cali Clip. The black clip matches perfectly, you'd hardly notice it being there.
Great rundown of all the options, Ben, you really explain everything well.
Thank you for watching, and thank you for your feedback!~!~
The right rod for any technique really depends on many variables. Right rod for you most likely is not the right rod for someone else.
Unless you listen to a lot of UA-cam pros these days who undoubtedly preach there is a right and wrong way to do things. (Because they heard it from someone)
What kinda line you throwing? Leader?
How heavy is the chatterbait?
Hook diameter?
Smallmouth? Largemouth?
Muscle memory on hookset?
Drag setting preference?
Short skips or long casts?
Open water? Heavy cover?
With some of those variables presented, the "right" rod can vary greatly from person to person.
"You want the right rod so there is the right amount of tip, enough to keep the fish pinned, and enough backbone to get them in"
...yes. correct.
And that depends on the person.
But this "right and wrong" trend is great for sales!
Could Poison Adrena 1610m-g throw a 3/8 full size jackhammer with Yamamoto zako(total less than 3/4)? Although it‘s a medium but the lure weight range is 1/4-1oz.
That store looks cool.
Am I the only one cringing at the way he is bending the rod?😯
Yea
Completely disagree, Iv tried specific chatter bait rods, they have so much bend you can’t get a good hook set at distance and you’ll end up losing more fish do to this. In my opinion a MH moderate action is ideal, the moderate tip allows for further cast and lighter more accurate cast, while having a stiff enough back bone to drive that large meaty single hook in, and in my opinion you’d wanna use a spinner bait on that rod as well with that same logic. No different than why you’d wanna use a rod with good back bone for a jig or Texas rig, you have to drive that hook home. Trust me do not waist your money on a specific “chatter bait” glass composite rod, complete waist of money and they feel like large noodles.
Totally disagree with this one especially if you throw Fluorocarbon with chatterbaits.. 7’1 or 7’2 MH fast action in most rods. I have lost a lot of fish on a Mh mod fast and moderate graphite when using Fluorocarbon. Braid I didn’t lose as many with the mod fast but still more than fast action. This is the first time I have disagreed with you guys. 6 speed reel is perfect!
We don't always have to agree :). The only "right" is what works for you, and if you're happy with those rods that's great 👍
True got,to get what works best for for you.
Makes sense, I almost always use a little slower rod with braid due to the different amount of stretch
What about Orochi XXseries? Considering they are composite and lighter than valkyrie series which would be the best for 1/2 chatterbait?
Thanks in advance Ben
How many times are you going to say 'right?'
The 7'2" Fenwick HMG Medium mod fast comes in at like 100 bucks and is an excellent budget chatterbait rod, it's full graphite so it's lighter but being a M it has a deeper bend and it's still rated to 1 oz. (It'll throw 1.5 oz no problem) It's an excellent option for anyone on a tighter budget. Sixgill fishing also has the chopper series rods which are a composite technique specific blank and they're absolutely phenomenal at about $160. Also, don't forget you can always run mono or copoly line for even more absorption.
I use medium heavy graphite fast action , great for running chatterbait through and around submerged vegetation. Anything softer will hang up too often.
Thank you for making it more understandable I just got into bass fishing a year ago so I'm learning all the poles and reels there are a lot out there
Ok, I’m at 4:40 and I think I should stop the video....I’m literally trying to decide right now if I want to overnight the destroyer p5 blade to be my chatterbait/spinnerbait rod 😳
Ben,
On the Shimano Expride MH Glass rod, you mentioned it won’t handle the heavier 3/4oz and up chatter baits, but I have one and it’s rated for up to 1-1/4oz. baits but mine does say it’s a composite glass rod. Are we still talking about the same rod?
I strongly and respectfully disagree with glass rods for chatterbaits, or any single hook lures. I bought a Shimano expride glass rod after watching a video stating it was great for chatterbaits and lost more fish on it than you would believe. To me it had too much flex for the hook. I now use it on crankbaits and it's fine. Just my personal preference. I love your videos and lure selection on your website.
Love how you really break it down and explained the details. Looking forward to this series
St. Croix Legend glass is my chatter bait rod. When I first started the chatter bait, I thought I needed a jig type rod. Didn’t take long to figure out that didn’t work. Lost bunches of fish. Finally figured out a slower action was needed. A more “dead” stick is better, so the fish loads up before you feel it.
Kistler feel n reel is absolute perfection for chatterbaits
What do you think about the longer loomis mbrs? My 76MH seems like a good bladed jig rod so far….
Evergreen Jackhammer rod is really nice! Had it about 6months now. Waiting for y'all for restock the Steez A 6.3:1 Left hand.
Unbelievable vid. The Rod we use is, in my opinion much more important than the reel. Thank you for the education. Those rods would be really nice to have but about $50-75 too much for a family man who still fishes 3-5 times a week. I love the channel tho...
Hello, question someone gave me a shimano zodias casting rod for stripe bass is that a good rod for stripe? It's a 7.2 med/heavy glass
I use my chatterbait for more 7-12 foot water because it won’t get hung up and a square bill I’ll fish 1-6 feet because if gets hung up it’s easy to retrieve vs in deeper water it’s gone I’ll ditch both these baits for a swim jig which I use as a more bulk meal presentation
I like the expride 7M glass rod for chatterbaits, and well as cranks up to about a DT-6..The 72MH glass is more of a buzzbait rod to me, a little stiff for chatterbaits
Great vid! do you all have a playlist of all of the current videos in this series where you are suggesting technique specific rods?
This is amazing info! I use a Dobyns Cranking Rod(736). Never had an issue with losing a fish and casts great!
Valkyrie seems nice for kayak fishing.
Could you use the Orochi XX Perfect Pitch for 3/8 and 1/2 oz. chatterbaits with trailers?
