    The reason I got into musical theatre, depicted in one note change. I originally watched the 25th because I was OBSESSED with Nick Jonas at the time. Alfie’s performance is what got me into musical theatre. He, in MY OPINION, is the most vocally talented man on earth right now. JOJ and Colm are two of my absolute favorites. But, to me, no one will ever touch Alfie in this role. I went to New York for my 21st birthday JUST to see Alfie as Valjean. He did a run for MAYBE 4 weeks. and I got to stage door and meet him and I told him his performance in the 25th is what got me into musical theatre. I will treasure that moment for the rest of my life.

      Musical theatre originated from opera though. Also musical theatre is about self expression which is why you can find so many different versions of musical theatre pieces. Because technically there are many ways to interpret songs. Colm probably interprets it the way most people interpret prayer; a quiet plea. Alfie put an interesting spin on things. Him putting power behind his voice can symbolize anger, desperation or stubbornness. I know when I was little and my dog passed I was very pissed at god. And when he gets quieter at the end it can be seen as perhaps resigned begging. But I definitely see where your coming from, I just wanted to point out a different perspective c: have an amazing day! And sorry if I posted twice I’m in mobile

      @Howardsend88 Prayer is basically a conversation with God and there are many times in the Bible where people were crying out to God with a variety of emotions. Prayer can be quiet but it can also be loud and can explode out of someone's heart as they cry out to God and plead with Him in desperation and agony.

      @@krystaltardif269 In the actor's Libretto for the show, this is actually just labeled as "the Prayer." Alfie has stated in several interviews that he took the opinion that Valjean was resigned to the fact the Priest "bought" his soul for God, but the character is still struggling with Christian Love - Javert is supposedly a devout man, but has no love for the poor or downtrodden. Alfie interpreted the Prayer as Valjean arguing with God for Marius' life. He's devoted to seeing Cosette happy, because he promised Fantine that her child would "want for nothing." (And there's that whole guilt thing because Fantine's death is his fault.) With the arrival of the letter, Valjean realizes that Cosette wants Marius. So, he goes to the Barricade to save Marius. And in that vein, he yells that God can take and give - as he did with Valjean's life - so, God can keep Marius safe. If Valjean must die, he must die. But let Marius live.

      Umm…. I have no words. It isn't a "hold my beer" moment; it's a "smile and pretend this makes sense" moment. Colm, John and Simon's performances of Jean ValJean have been so pure for decades and Alfie is nothing but a peacock, mimicking the pristine presentation of a character that has already been perfected. Alfie has talent, no doubt but I cannot imagine that there are many people that grew up hearing Colm as ValJean will ever think Alfie quite “gets it”. He certainly is pretty... and loud… peacock.

    Wow, always liked Colm's version it was written for his voice, however Alfie blew the roof off, you hear the huge difference between a classically trained voice and a musical theatre voice. You can see the reaction of the singers behind Alfie when he sings. Just goose pimples every time. Can listen to this all the time.

    • @johnjungkook2721

      Boe's got a lovely voice, but is this song about having a lovely voice? Boe sings very well "with feeling" and all the other that they teach you at music school, but at the end all I'm left with is a beautiful voice. This song comes at a point in the play where a powerful voice is redundant. The best rendition I've seen of this song, other than Colm, is Karimloo's. He knew how to dial back his verdi-baritone belt and show something different.

    • @Ihdc1
      @Ihdc1 6 років тому

      Sam Serrao Boe doesn’t have feeling. He’s quite wooden. Classically trained doesn’t have to equal wooden. Cosette is often played by a classically trained soprano (orignal Cosettes Rebecca Caine and Judy Kuhn are both classically trained) and most aren’t as wooden as Alfie. Opera singers in opera are also not wooden.

    • @paulhermes9532
      @paulhermes9532 6 років тому +5

      Yes Alfie can sing, and he can definitely sing loud, but he is supposed to be praying in this scene. The audience is supposed to feel pain here, so his interpretation just sounds loud. I like opera by the way, so not hating on classically trained singers...

    All the comments are about Alfie coming in with his operatic key change and how powerful a moment it is. It is, but in quartet singing blend is everything. Locking in chords is what makes it beautiful. All four singing at the same dynamic with no one part overpowering the other three. Instead of just blowing everyone out of their chairs they missed an opportunity for something much more beautiful in a song that is a man imploring god to spare a young man’s life.

      I understand you prefer the older style, it was the original, but music does grow as better singers step up. Alfie Boe didn't sing it like an opera in the show, but put on show the talents he worded very hard to get, with the blessing of the producers , writers endorsement.
      Which as you can see from the comments - was very welcome indeed. If you had seen the practice session you would have known this. This is Musical Theatre not as an Opera. everyone has an opinion and a preference. No one is saying your opinion doesn't stand.

In fact the lady next to Michael Ball gets so emotional that she places her head on his shoulder during this. It's a wonderful sight to behold.

    Everyone has their favorite. He doesn't use the key change in the actual play, it was just for the quartet. Colm made the role his, I prefer him to Hugh : )

    I love Alfie ,John and Colm. Alfie is fantastic but nobody can hold a note like Colm! You can tell by the respect they show him by backing off and letting him hold that note for a for a count of 10 wow!

    Quelle voix, quelle puissance, que celle de Alfie Boe. Tout à fait merveilleux !! Par contre, seulement 1 minute, dommage .

    Alfie's very powerful but I still prefer the range of the more restrained, sensual, supple, voice of John Owen-Jones.

    Yeah, noticed his face too - he's like a proud uncle. In fact, ever i saw this, i've been looking for all AB-MB interactions during the encore. On a side note, look at Sam Barks's head shake @0:57 & at the Ramin-Alfie handshake (but that's on another clip, NOT this one) after the Valjean quartet perf. I totally love this cast!

    I've been reading the comments regarding Colm Wilkinson and Alfie Boe . For those stating that Alfie Boe blasts Colm Wilkinson out the water are missing the point . This song was written for musical theatre , not for an opera or a classical recital . Alfie Boe sings the song in a classical , yet over the top manner ; not in the correct , more restrained , nuanced manner in which it should be sung : that is why , for me , Colm Wilkinson's performance wins hands down every time .

      Musical theatre originated from opera though. Also musical theatre is about self expression which is why you can find so many different versions of musical theatre pieces. Because technically there are many ways to interpret songs. Yes, it is a prayer and Colm probably interprets it the way most people interpret prayer; a calm quiet plea. Alfie puts an interesting spin on things. I know when I was little and my dog passed, I was very pissed at god. So alfie putting power behind his words may symbolize anger or stubbornness. I completely see where your coming from, but I just wanted to bring up a different perspective. C: have an amazing day!

      No one will ever compare to Colm Wilkinson in the singing of 'Bring Him Home' If you saw the full version of this clip the reaction that CW gets from the audience when he sings the finale, even Simon Bowman smiles and knows that this man has made this role his own!

      It was written for CW, but he does not have the trained vocals that Alfi does. Alfi gave it the twist of the angry father not wanting to lose his son. Colm couldn't hit those notes in on his best days. His long note at the end is his thing and the boys walked away to let him have it. Nice ending to a very enjoyable respectful performance. I just love how all the cast just melt at Alfi voice tho... they had to change it up to cope with his vocal. Stole the show

    I love how they get progressively better, then Alfie Boe comes in and owns the lot of them.
