Your tutorial is good, but it's hard to see because the view is dark ...a birds eye view is better......can you do a birds eye view when you remove the bones?
when u have done it a thousand times it's going to be easy but when u first start out u gonna butcher some fish, remember practice makes almost perfect. Because no one is perfect.
Thank you Sir for clear instructions on how to fillet. I was wasn't tilting the blade forward on the backbone of the fish and was cutting through the fish wrong and was getting a bad cut. I think you gave me more confidence to go back and try again.
Dont be afraid to mess up and watch the video as much as needed. Hit me up if you run into anything thats messing you up. the comment section or my email which is hctvtoo@gmail.com
Listen to this man folks he absolutely correct... I work in a warehouse and seen some pretty horrific stuff because people weren't use the proper method when use a knife or boxcutter!!!! Always, Always cut away from yourself!!!!!
Dude that is some great instructions on filleting crappie. Many years ago probably (40) I'm 52 so I was around 10 - 12 years old. A really good friend after a day of great day fishing did what you said never to do...was cleaning fish but cutting towards himself and the knife slipped and cut the artery in his upper thigh. My dad was the only person not frozen in shock. He tied it off above the wound and the ambulance got him to the hospital just in time they said. I just wanted to share that because of the importance of not cutting towards yourself and your video is the first that I've seen warns of that.
Quite possibly the best video on how to filet crappie with an electric knife. I've only been doing it for a couple of years, and I'm getting better at it, but your video was great at showing how to get the most meat off the fish. Liked and subbed. Thank you.
Thanks for the video! I was totally not doing it right. Now i have the technique! I'm a kayak fisherman and love fishing for slabs! Man, love watching your videos.
Glad the video is useful to you. I respect kayak fishermen. I don't know if I could ever get use to the compact space. The great thing about the internet and places like youtube, you get to see how others do things. Get those crappie fillets frying! and tight lines man!
Another great video! Best Crappie Fishing U Tube Channel out there. The Crappie is the best all around fish in American lakes. Underrated fish! Best looking fish. Best eating fish. Beautiful game fish. Those black crappie with those deep colors are something.
@@HookCityTV Yes for sure! Those black crappie are stunning. Always liked this fish the most ever since I was a kid. Now I get to fish for them with my kids! Nothing better than that. Waiting for the spawn bite here in California!! Last year we had some amazing days!
Man I had never thought about it but my cousin cleans his crappie turn the knife toward his self. I will have to show him the right way before he loses his fingers. Great informative show man. Hook city fan for life man.
A1 brother!!! That's the best I ever seen it dine with an electric knife! You got ALL the meat you could possibly get...who in the world said you wasting meat??? Smh ...man I might have to go back and try it again. It never did good with it but ill replay this video the next time I try the E-Knife lol great video grwat demonstration!
I had to learn how to filet crappies. I caught some from Toledo bend reservoir in Texas and they were so big when I tried to fry them the damn tails were hanging out the skillet.
Good communicator, good technique. Imma fan. You are the man! The only thing I do different is I love my cordless filet knife... one less thing to worry with.

Thank you for sharing brother!!! Greatly appreciate you break down the safety about filleting. I have never cleaned a fish before by filleting it. Time to try it!
I've learned a lot watching this cleaning and filleting Big Cappie with a amazingly good Electric Knife . You made it look easy . I live in NC , and enjoying my 3rd year of Retirement . Congrats on retirement and the new hip, lol... Hope the recovery is going well. Thanks for watching and NO im not a cowboys fan. I took my support when Jerry fired Jimmy years ago. lol, thanks for watching!
I remember one guy was cleaning up a bunch of striped bass. And he was using an electric fillet knife. That knife was working great. I was impressed with how fast you can fillet fish without sacrificing quality. I've seen guys fillet a fish in 2 minutes with a fillet knife. But if you're doing a bunch the electric fillet knife is the ticket.
Great detailed demonstration. I use the same technique and it's amazing how quickly a mess of crappie can be frying pan ready when using an electric fillet knife. The only thing I do differently is I use a razor sharp manual fillet knife just for cutting out the ribs. It's faster, cleaner cuts, and saves wear and tear on the electric knife serrated teeth. Great work!
Hey HC. I've been using a fillet knife I got at Bass Pro to fillet fish with. Takes a long time and have to sharpen the thing before using the next time. I'm going to Academy soon as I get off work and getting the Rapala® Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Cordless Fillet Knife. All five star reviews. I searched for American Angler and everyone was out of stock or on back order. I think I will enjoy the cordless since I will be using it outdoors 80 percent of the time. My fish house has lights but I haven't added a receptacle, never needed one before LOL. Thanks for this video man. Changed the way I fillet my Crappie and Bass for sure!!! Will no doubt cut my cleaning time in half. Love your vids!!! Nicely Done!!!
Hey thanks for the support man. Ive heard really good things about that cordless knife. Nothing like cutting down the time you have to clean them... especially when you have a boat load of them, lol
Very nice work with that electric knife man! You did those crappie really sweet. I’ve watched a lot of videos on cleaning fish. You are the only one I have seen emphasize knife safety & to not cut towards yourself! Good job. Great advise, especially using an electric knife. Need to do more videos on cleaning & filleting fish. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! My goal for the video was to actually help people that dont have an idea how to properly and safely fillet their crappie with an electric knife. Id love for you to subscribe and keep in touch! TIght lines...
Thanks. I watched a few cleaning videos and saw a few things that were left out. Hope this one didnt have too many holes in it. Thanks for watching, and i hope you return for more of my videos.
New sub today! I used to hate cleaning crappie because I used a fillet knife. You know... first cut the same, then cut down the backbone, then cut and peel down the back bone until you can cut the fillet off. I switched to an electric fillet knife 3 years ago when I saw this technique. I think I actually get more meat than with the manual fillet knife. Not to mention how much easier and faster it is. This is the best technique in my opinion, and you nailed it. Great demo! I also use this to clean catfish and most other fish I catch. For catfish I start on the side just behind the dorsal fin and after I remove the fillet if the fish is big enough, I cut off the small piece of meat just anterior to the dorsal fin. I found that technique on Bubba Rountree Outdoors. Thanks again for the great channel!

Hook City TV ok I did subscribe on my other channel Angler Brothers a channel I’m building content for with my Brother that don’t talk much, sort of like Richard Greene’s Elmo But my Elmo has a body and just smiles or frowns and only likes to Catfish lol, but I’m making him expand his views lol anyway great channel Bro and Tell Babygirl and Hook City AR sends it’s love and respect!!! #JaySouth #AhhhBoyyy
Bruh!!!! I appreciate you for this awesome video. i am going to get an electric knife. Didn't realize it was that easy with an electric knife. God bless you sir. Maybe my family will eat more than just catfish now LOL... Learned alot today.
That electric does pretty well, I’ve never had good luck with them, though its honestly been years since I’ve tried one. One great tip you made is the height of your cleaning station. I made the exact same point in my fish own cleaning video a little while back. If you’re doing any number of fish, it makes all the difference. Great demo!
As always, I loved the video Ken. But, you might want to get that little daughter to star in one. She reminds me of my little granddaughter, and she did a great job keeping me entertained. Keep those videos coming.
Ronnie Hall "Kami goes fishing" is often overlooked but it's her first fish and first time on my channel... Check it out and let me know whay you think.

Hook City! You got it mastered! I've always shy'd away from using electric knives to clean fish... particularly panfish! But, you've changed my mind. Nice breakdown Bruh!
Thanks man. I think a lot of people are weary of using electric knives on smaller fish. I clean hand sized bluegill the same way with the exact same knife! It only takes time and practice. Glad you found the video helpful man!
Crappie fillet like butter... can do it just as quick with a sharp 8 inch Russell knife. Dont have to worry about blades etc.. but to each his own. Nice job..
The trick is putting the knife against the bone making contact with the ribs and running the knife all the way down to the tail. It works on any fish including cat fish once you have it down. Also you don't have to skin crappie because the skin doesn t have a bad taste.
yes you can use either manual or electric knife to fillet fish. On one hand you dont have to worry about blades but you do need a good sharpener. Not with electrif knife blades. To each his own, thanks for watching
Love the vid bro. I have been using electric knives to filiet fish for a long time as well. Started with the Mr. Twister, to American Angler, to now a Rapala Heavy duty. But I like the no nonsense, relatively clean method of taking care of those slabs!
Hook City TV Yessir, I remember sharpening the knife on the stone before cleaning walleye. Saw someone in Canada using an electric knife and I was hooked!
Great video Sir...one thing I do to keep my knife base clean is run the blade through the first finger on the glove and pull it over the body of the knife to keep all the slime off of it. Makes my cleanup pretty a hose down. 👍
Very well explained! With an electric knife, no better way to do it! When I've only got a few fish sometimes I'll pull out the strait blade and get the meat under the ribs too, but it's not worth the hassle on more than 3-5 five fish.
not the way I do it but you are a natural teacher - great instruction and explanation of your knife angles and pressure points. I might have to try an electric knife now. Those are some nice fat crappies too!!
webso5 thanks for stopping by man. The beauty of it is there is more than one way to clean them. This is how I was taught by my father years ago. I'm getting better at the teaching thing... hope you subscribed.... more videos to come!
Good video , I start to cut the ribs like you , but before getting all the way through I turn the knife slightly more then 90 Degrees to save the rib meat .
Y'all got on some excellent fish... what no footage😁...I was out yestdy in the rain and gotta toss all my footage.... I'm still ole school use my trusty Gerber.... yeap those are some good looking fillets....👍👍👍
SK's CRAPPIE Catchn Adventures man I meant to take the camera and left it charging in the car. I didn't wasn't to ask him to let me go get it. Lol, I hit a 8.5lb striper that day too. You can see him on the cooler in the background. Lol
Great tip. I've been doing it for years. When we use to catfish I'd save the guts and dump a frozen block of them under the boat. Thanks for stopping by man..
Man I gotta get me an electric knife! With my manual filet knife I CAN NOT get that filet off of the skin without cutting through the skin so I have to descale all my fish first which takes a lot of time. I'm about to solve that problem!! I don't mind eating the skin but dang it takes a long time to scrape all them fish. Thanks for the very informative video. Keep em coming!
if you are cutting through the skin once you have cut it off the spin sounds like you may be pressing in too hard. Once you make a cut into the meat, turn the blade to run down the skin. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching
Didn’t learn nothing as I’ve ran electric knife since bout 8 years old now 33 watched video just so I can know there is other guys that have learned or been taught how to do this glad to see there more than just my family out there I use the rapala HD an it’s awesome might try one them it’s in my short video I have uploaded not really informational like yours good video for the beginners I do have some tricks on catfish that nobody does an saves the knife an gets all meat also
Any citrus fruit will remove the fish scent from your hands. Most commonly used is lemon! Also bro, I fried that back bone piece because I like eating the tail when fried hard. The meat in between the ribs is excellent and the whole process utilize the whole fish and accounts for keeping prego crappies.
We could be twins running them A.A. Knives, I have 2 of the old ones they are square. The one thing you do I do to but you didn’t point it out was how you hold the knife out away from the cleaning table. I Enjoy your vids The Big Booty Crappie Slayer lol.
This is the best filet video on UA-cam. Amazing job! I will be going back to this one again and again.
Glad you found the video useful! Make sure to hit the subscribe button. If you have any suggestions on videos let me know.

not the way I do it but you are a natural teacher - great instruction and explanation of your knife angles and pressure points.
On the bigger crappie ill go over the rib cage or ever cut it out and fry it bones and all! Thanks for watching man..
Well done. Thank you for the instruction.
No problem, I hope it helps you

i like that tip no scales everywhere.keepin it real in nc
Great video, I subbed. A tip on disposal..... freeze your carcasses in a trash bag and toss frozen carcasses in trash can on trash day.
Great tip. I've been doing it for years. When we use to catfish I'd save the guts and dump a frozen block of them under the boat. Thanks for stopping by man..
Very instructive
Man I gotta get me an electric knife! With my manual filet knife I CAN NOT get that filet off of the skin without cutting through the skin so I have to descale all my fish first which takes a lot of time. I'm about to solve that problem!! I don't mind eating the skin but dang it takes a long time to scrape all them fish. Thanks for the very informative video. Keep em coming!
if you are cutting through the skin once you have cut it off the spin sounds like you may be pressing in too hard. Once you make a cut into the meat, turn the blade to run down the skin. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching
Thank you sir, very informative.
Thanx man. Great technique. We'll use it soon.

Great Technique
Very informative!! Thanks!
Very welcome!
Nice work, very informative
Thanks man. I wanted to make sure the video was in full detain, especially for the viewers that have never tried filleting a crappie.
Hey Ken, my American Angler knife gets hot after filleting a few Crappie’s. I should have sent it back , Maybe I got a bad one.
Thats a first for me. Send that joker back. Ive never seen one get hot!
Any citrus fruit will remove the fish scent from your hands. Most commonly used is lemon! Also bro, I fried that back bone piece because I like eating the tail when fried hard. The meat in between the ribs is excellent and the whole process utilize the whole fish and accounts for keeping prego crappies.
good job...very well explained.
Great video...
Nice job :thanks
Sweet tutorial! Thanks for sharing your tips!
MrHardcharger2 thanks for watching man! Hope you subscribed to the city..
