Pavement only keep getting better live. The 2022 shows were the very best of their career. I will see them May 2023 and am so looking forward to the show.
I sang Bob's part at a NYE gig two nights ago and can 100% confirm Bob has the best job in the world haha I also lost my voice and I don't think it's ever coming back!
The Boys, at the height of their powers!! During those Central Park shows. Firing on all cylinders. Catch Stephen's solo at the end?? Prettttttty good. Bob's vocal..SPOT ON!! Rhythm section like an AC/DC machine. Loud, Hard, Fast, Tight!
Yeah, I don't get why there aren't more bands with sort of a hype-guy like that. He's (obviously) not the most technically proficient singer but he more than makes up for it in terms of raw energy.
Using your one nationally televised appearance trying to drum up interest in your nation wide reunion tour by playing a relatively unknown (even by Pavement standards) song in order to shit all over Southern California for taking NorCal's water might be the most punk thing I have ever witnessed.
I was there behind the band on this show and as a Pavement diehard you completely read my mind that day ten years ago as it unfolded live. The band has a long history of shooting themselves in the proverbial foot when the pressure’s on (See Wowee Zowee) They could have played any song off of their greatest hits album on Jimmy’s show that would have been better than this choice. Is it maybe also an Andy Kaufmanesque prank and they are the only ones in on the joke that’s more aggravating and annoying than funny to the uninitiated in the crowd and watching later from home? But maybe that cool detachment thing has always just been fear of being great. I love them but they could have had Nirvana-level success. Instead they wilted under the bright lights again and just chose to be the great little indie band that could with Matador Records. At the height of their powers in the mid 90s they had all the majors lining up to sign them.
@@mr.patrickaloysiusbartholo4727 I saw them at their Greek Theater show in Berkeley on that tour. They brought out Gary to guest drum during the show and he showed up drunk on stage about 12 songs before he should have. They stopped the show. Then when he drummed for Slanted and Enchanted songs at the end of the show he tried to twirl his sticks and dropped one so the song they were playing just didn’t have percussion for about 30 seconds. It’s classic pavement shit but you take it with the band I think.
@@mr.patrickaloysiusbartholo4727 If it’s hard being the band that was almost Nirvana imagine how hard it is to be Silkworm, the band that was almost Pavement
Man, Malkmus can play a Solo, can't he? That sounded so bloody good - I wasn't too stoked on Rob singing, but only because I feel that people unaware of Pavement and where they stood in relation to every Band that existed during the period in the 90s when Music changed - I mean, Christgau called them the finest Rick band of the 90s and Jones wrote a Piece for The New Yorker Magazine wherein he admitted his ambivalence toward Pavement and Malkmus, but nevertheless made a call on the best band of the 90s and though he landed on Nirvana's side, it's still significant that it was a serious consideration. He quoted what they were referred to as being: The Smart Nirvana. Malkmus just did not want to be too big.... He is absolutely an Artist who would have been a little bit cool with Cobain-level attention.
It did start out a bit slow, but Malkmus also came in on the 4, which kinda messed up the beginning even more. But who cares? It all turned out great regardless of that.
Those "I could do that", "my 5-year-old could paint that" comments... The difference is that the artists actually did/are doing it, whereas you and/or your 5-year-old aren't. You may not like what Bob contributes to the band, but the fact that he's been with the band since the very beginning tells me that they dig what he's doing.
I never understood why this band is famous. Everything sucks in that one. The songs are terrible, the live performances are terrible, the albums are all terrible. Pavement is a big mystery for me.

The audience probably thinks Bob is the contest winner
Bob is the man

I am glad Bob got to perform a lot here.
so cool to know that mr Adobong manacc likes pavement loll
Bob isn't a perfect singer or musician. But he has zero fear. That's what makes a good performance.
Yoko Ono also had zero fear lol
@@JammastaJ23 that's why she was invited to perform with ornette coleman and was able to create uncompromisingly great work like Fly :)

Holy shit this was almost 10 years ago already.
Bob Nastanovich has some awesome vocals! Gives the song a more punky feel to it!

John Legend's facial expression upon experiencing Pavement- LOL

Bob really is what tips Pavement over the edge.

My favorite Pavement song by far
I would like nothing more in life than to be Bob Nastanovic.
Malkmus did a mistake at the beginning and they laugh about it. Love it.
Malkmus makes no mistakes!
nah the drummer started too slow
SO GOOD
Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!
Bob was 43 when he did this..that's pretty impressive
Nicest guy you could ever meet. He's always smiling. He's just so happy that anyone is talking to him like he's important.
I saw him do it a week ago!

Great sound! There's some kind of alchemy that happens when they all get together. Hope they do a post pandemic tour!!!

Interesting write up dude. I think Sonic Youth and Pavement are way better 90's bands than Nirvana.
Sonic youth lost touch half way through the 90s. But then again I loved Murray Street and Sonic Nurse. Thurston had to fuck it up with his dick tho
I love Bob
Watched this a billion times and just noticed that Stephen drops his guitar when they finish
Nast4eva!
Bob rulez
The contest winner looks like he doesn't even care he's 1. On late night and 2. Playing with pavement
