It is amazing how beautiful a simple harmony can make a melodic line sound! I like to nudge the attack, release and slides to match as much as possible.
Vocal production is one of those things that there are so many different ways to approach. Even techniques like this that I've used there's always little nuances to the way people do things that you can learn from no matter how long you've been doing it. One thing I often do if I'm struggling with working out harmonies or with a singer not familiar with how to figure them out, is use a pitch correction tool to create a "robo-harmony" guide track to show what notes to be aiming for and even play it through the headphones whilst capturing the actual performance. Can sometimes be easier to latch onto than the old piano/keyboard guide. Just my 2 cents.
Sir this is just ridiculous. And I mean that with all due respect because your background vocals are amazing. Thank you for showing how you did this because it is really a great teachable moment. I had to subscribe because as someone just getting into music production this is amazing. Keep up the great videos.
1:57 this is just my opinion but I feel like this is way more of a “choir” or chorale then gang vocals. To me at least gang vocals is supposed to be the sound of an entire bar singing a song or a group of friends in the car. It makes you feel like you’re surrounded by people. Nothing wrong with a choir just feels different to me.
Yeah, I came here hoping to learn how to make myself sound like 25 hooligans drunkenly sing-shouting Never Walk Alone (or something). I already knew how to sing backup with myself. Ah well, I'm sure there's other videos.
You are helping me on my journey to make better recordings more than you will ever know. Thank you! P.s. I didn’t skip the ads (apparently that helps you out)
Outstanding tutorial Nathan! Love your production. I'm just starting with Vocal Production. Here's a question do you pitch correct lead vocals before doing Gang vocals? Do you pitch correct all of your backing vocals?
Absolutely! Gang is more of that choir / big group sound. Background vocals are usually more talking about the typical harmonies you'd do with your lead. Gang vocals still background vocals just not usually the term most would use to describe it.
Does putting them all on a summing track help the processing speed? I’ve been having overload troubles when trying to stack vocals. Wonder if itl help 🤔
EQ can help brighten and darken your vocals (or instruments) and it even help with “S”es in songs. It’s something you just gotta play around with. A compressor is ESSENTIAL!! It really transforms the attack of your vocals and helps enhance your voice when the track is really loud.
Very nice Idea👍🏼 But do you have some clicks recorded in the BVs? I hear some clicks.. Two Questions: do you often use the stock inside Logic Compressors? Are they the same Quality like per example Compressors from Waves or is there a Audioquality difference? Greetings from Switzerland And keep on rocking
How do you like the method to edit the vocal choirs in a extra environment and then bounce the ready mixed for example 8 voices as a wave and copy that to your main mix. So you have less Tracks. Or is this bad for later steps? Thx
I understand the arrangement is more important than mixing, but the chorus part is hard to deal with. All instruments and vocals come together, and I think only mixing skill can figure it out, but not arrangement in this case. What is your opinion?
Keep in mind that the most useful tool in all of mixing is volume. I know so many just preach on plugins but balance is the absolute most important part of mixing is getting things balanced with volume. If you have a mess even when balancing - the arrangement is too dense most likely
‘When you add two voices, it sounds like two voices, but when you add three voices, it sounds like more.’ Music AND maths in one video!
THIS APPLIES TO EVERYTHING I REALIZED
@@angurishudesu it’s revolutionary

I really have been learning as I go!
thank you for that tip!
LOVE your videos and teaching.. .. but how would any of these artists do this in a live concert??

wow! a nixing tutorial with a song I'd actually listen to - and an amazing vocalist!
Outstanding tutorial Nathan! Love your production. I'm just starting with Vocal Production. Here's a question do you pitch correct lead vocals before doing Gang vocals? Do you pitch correct all of your backing vocals?
Do you think you could make a video on Bus/Sends?
You got some popping/clicking going on in those vocals
Keep it up with these ''small tips'' videos, really great ! Helps a lot when you focus on one subject going more indepth
Sweet!! Definitely planning on it :)
Thanks for the video!
What's the difference between a "gang vocal" and a "background vocal"?
Absolutely!
Gang is more of that choir / big group sound. Background vocals are usually more talking about the typical harmonies you'd do with your lead. Gang vocals still background vocals just not usually the term most would use to describe it.
Great tutorial! Cheers from a fellow Nebraskan!
Go Big Red! Thanks!
What's the name of the second song?
I just did some gang vocals on a track that is already released but will try these ideas on the track we are working on now. Thanks.
Your voice sounds amazing dawg

Awesome tutorial
How do you layer overlapping Melodies? Like how musicals do?
Do you parallel compress vocals?
Brilliant insights & technique !
Does putting them all on a summing track help the processing speed? I’ve been having overload troubles when trying to stack vocals. Wonder if itl help 🤔
Yep you can do that - not really one way - many ways of doing it.
Amazing as always, Nathan!! Thanks for doing these videos!! It’s helping me a lot!! Cheers from Brazil!!
Love hearing this so much! Thanks for telling me and so happy to help. 😎🙏
i watched all. your viddeos at once! this is definitely the channnel for me
Kind of same here... broke ass singer.. with only many dreams in heart ...
I kinda see Nathan as my Mentor..
@ 6:50 what’s the purpose of eq >> compression >> eq?

Yay! Welcome to the channel fam!
Thank you bro 💯
Thank you for this!!!
Absolutely - thanks for checking it out!
I’m quite sure you used a tube mic, but which preamp did u use for these vocals?
Thnx for sharing Nathan
Thanks!
Are these songs available to listen to on youtube?
I'm a pro backing vocalist - don't use pitch correction - you can sing!
Were the gang vocals sung by a person then mixed or are they computer generated, a plug in?
Sung by a person - layered up many many time
Great stuff Nathan thank you! Btw - did you record each gang vocal track in mono for layering ?
Yup everything tracked in mono!
@@NathanJamesLarsen thanks old chap!
One more sub bro, go on with those nice videos ! 💪
Exodus is the king of this

But there's a secret to making 5 vocals sound like 50. What's that secret?
