Mass Effect's Commander Shepards Break Down Their Favorite Lines

- We're Commander Shepard and these are our favorite lines on the Citadel. To celebrate N7 Day, Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer join us to break down their favourite Commander Shepard lines from the Mass Effect trilogy.
Happy N7 Day! Every year, Mass Effect developer BioWare celebrates its beloved sci-fi trilogy on November 7, and this year we're joined by both Commander Shepards to break down the most iconic lines from the games.
Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer voice female and male Commander Shepard respectively, and over the years, have delivered some of the most iconic lines in gaming. From "I should go" to "I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite store on the Citadel," Jennifer and Mark react to the games after all these years, reveal what it was like to be in the recording booth, and whether they thought the lines would become as infamous as they did.
Earlier this year, a remaster of the Mass Effect trilogy, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, launched on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In our review, Jordan Ramée gave it an 8/10, praising its visual updates and changes to the original Mass Effect to modernize its controls.
#MassEffect
"They messed with my hamster, guys... Now it's personal." My favorite line from Jennifer.
"Anybody messes with you, go for the eyes."
"That is NOT OK."
You don’t mess with an N7’s space hamster lol
Now, who here is olde enough to have played the original Baldur's Gate and been introduced to the original miniature giant space hamster, Boo? :) One of two references to that great game.
Messin with my cabin
Brooks: "Admit it you'll miss me!"
Shepard: "Not at this range"
Damn, hahaha I'll have to choose that option next time.
@@tike2006 Not 100% sure but I think it's a button press renegade option ... and if you don't do it, Wrex shoots Maya and says something about how you're getting slow. lol
@@Whippets It’s any of your teammates I think. Cause I think Tali can shoot her and she’ll call her a “Bashtet” or whatever
@@UnknownDenizen For me it was Wrex, but interesting ... I wonder what triggers a particular teammate to shoot her.
@@Whippets Probably depends on who you took on the mission to retake the Normandy.
I didn't realize that Mark Meer was married to WELCOME TO ALLIANCE MILITARY DATABASE.
And Rana (the Asari on Virmire)
@@RavenMurcielago Look out Mark she's indoctrinated!
I guess Shep's just married to his work.
@@Potataro454 or they'll bang, ok?
The Male Shepard is married to the computer login that can't remember who he is (when you play a new game from scratch) 😂
Mark: "My wife is in the game, she's actually the very first voice you hear."
Me: "...his wife voiced Udina?"
I know it's a bit late, but the female voice when you create a character profile, is the voice he's referring to.
@@TheRedAzuki shh, udina-shepard romance sounds too funny to ruin it
@@NotASpyPootis lol.

@@TheRedAzuki hey thanks for telling me. I didn't know because the second after he said "my wife is in the game" I blacked out immediately
Even if you play as female Shepard, Mark Meer shall be entertaining you throughout by voicing a whole bunch of aliens.
Indeed. It’s funny how he voiced the Hanar and then also the species that’s like the polar opposite of how they talk, which are the Vorcha
like Niftu Cal
@@abesmissioncontrol2013 You mean the Biotic God?
Yup. Niftu Cal. Probably my favourite bit in the whole game. Kind of sorry this video didn't bring that up.
I am a great wind that will sweep all before me like a...great wind! Gets me everytime.
@@MorinehtarTheBlueNap. Yes. Destroy the universe later
My favorite exchange with Mark's Shepard is with Drunk Tali in ME3.
Shepard: Ahh...
Tali: Don't "Ahh" me...you sound like a Vorcha...
After watching this, that makes a lot more sense and I love it
I like it when, if you're romancing her, she goes on to say that her dad would have hated you lol
I love the Emergency Induction Port.
''Don't aaah meee''
The Vorcha were actually voiced by him. So Tali wasn't wrong
Mark and Jennifer have made my N7 Day if nothing else.
I can't believe I almost forgot about N7 day.
@@Lark88 That is almost a crime right there, good you didn’t forget
Let's just say, No Nut November is a failure every N7 day.
@@Xpistos510 it's a critical mission failure
And the Citadel DLC always has me going “god damn I love my crew” the entire time. It’s just such a feel-good experience. Best DLC for any video game.
For me, it came out at the best time, too... AFTER I had already played out the extremely disappointing ending, and THEN we get the real send-off that was the Citadel DLC. It certainly mended a few spars of the bridge they had just fire-bombed
The only thing good about that dlc was the party and "dates" with each crew member, the story for it was cringy, Shepard fighting their clone.
When people talk about how good that dlc is, it's always about the party and the interactions with everyone. I've never really seen anyone comment on how good the story was before the party. To me, it was meh, worse part of the dlc. After that, great.
Where Lair of the Shadow Broker is perfect from start to finish.
@@LdyVder Yes! Finally I'm not the only one disagreeing with people calling it the best dlc, because it really isn't. Yes, the character interactions are good, but the story, locations and fights just aren't much to write home about.
IMO Lair of the ShadowBroker is where the series really peaked, the action, the locations, the pacing and the in mission banter its all so good.
@@LdyVder It's definitely not supposed to be a fantastic story. It's intentionally cheesy and filled with self referential humor. I agree that Lair of Shadow Broker is one of the best, if not the best, more serious DLCs in the series.
Like, If you just want to make a game with Shepard and pals just hanging out on the citadel... I'd pony up 60$ for that. But you know.. like a week of fun I can replay like I do the citadel dlc.
I didn’t expect Mark Meer to look like a Canadian David Tennant with sentient eyebrows.
Mark Meer is Canadian.
Judging by his decor, I bet he's a DM too.
@@EGRJ If you mean Dungeon Master-you would be correct.
I get Older Matt Mercer vibes from Mark
Didn't you know, all Canadians have sentient eyebrows. It's how we communicate with one another. We evolved to compensate for the fact that half our language is unintelligible drunken slurs.
Very few moments in games have made me cry as much as the “there’s no Shepard without Vikarian scene”
Oh yes, tears have been shed. 😭
People don't like Kaidan much, and he's hardly my favourite character either, but the parallel conversation with him hit me really hard, less of a best friends (or lovers) moment and more just a clear-eyed appreciation of mortality. It's something like
Shepard: "We're old soldiers, Kaidan. We know the score."
Kaidan: "... yeah. We know the score."
It's *perfectly* delivered.
That scene didn't get me anywhere near as badly as Tali's "I have a home... Come back to me." at the very end. Her last words to Shepard. Oh man that breaks me.
I have it as a keychain! I had to stop and try not to cry. I didn't succeed!
Same here. Gets me every time. I just love this romance option. I started playing the ME universe backwards from 3 as that was the game my husband had at the time and I didn’t know anything about this realm and fell in live with Garrus instantly
They forgot the best conversation in the game!

I can't believe Mark Meer didn't mention his iconic, "We'll bang, okay?"
He actually did on the zoom reunion they had the other day! They even had Alli (Liara) say the Reaper Doomsday Device line, but she didn't know what it was from 😂
One of the most iconic lines that Shepard never actually says in-game.

These two are the best. Jennifer Hale has such incredible range, and Mark Meer is the perfect tough guy soldier voice. Both match their characters so well, and they're one of the best protagonist voiceovers I've ever heard in a video game. I'm also playing Brutal Legend right now, totally at random, and Jen Hale is great in that as well.
Jennifer Hale is in a bunch of things, and she's great each and every time. Been in love with her voice ever since KOTOR.
@@0spidey1 That was the first time I heard her as well, loved Bastila too.
I remember when i got into overwatch and heard Ashe and i was like "wait I know that voice, where do I know it from" and then I bought the legendary edition and i was like OHMYGODOFCOURSE
The two of them also play the male and female characters in The Long Dark
She's the same character in everything she does
I absolutely LOVE even male Shep says "There's no Shepard without Vakarian" regardless of romance. Whether friends or love interest, Garrus is always Shepard's ride or die.
The big stupid jellyfish line destroys me emotionally, yet has me laughing hysterically every time.
I got the Mass Effect 3 version for the first time (I'd never chosen the "investigate" option in that conversation before) and the buildup and delivery absolutely killed me!
@@thejadedeagle6729 SAME!
"Commander Shepard does not cry", says Jennifer Hale.
But she does! If you romanced Thane, femshep cries on the Citadel DLC.
Yup! When she gets the video message from Thane, the last one.
Makes me tear up, honestly.
The convo female Shepard has in ME3 when she is in a relationship with Thane, in ME2, when Thane's son translates what she didn't understand brought me to tears 😭
Maybe she was unaware of that because she didn't provide any voice lines and femshep sort of just shed tears in silence. She probably hasn't played the game either.
The circumstances are a bit different you have to admit. Her lover dies in one, and may be killed in another.
@@wkgates crying is crying
I love how over the top shepard punch is, its like hes trying to break a wall with his fist or something
Especially in ME 1 🤣
Falcon…
Facts. In ME1 he just fucking CLOCKS her, full force swing.
He gears up for that punch like he's fighting a krogan
Man Jennifer Hale has voiced so many legendary characters.
Particularly one that'll always be in my memory is Bastila Shan, what a game
I hope they bring her back for the remake of KOTR
I liked her work in Tales of Symphonia.
I particularly like her work as Fall from Grace and Deionnara in Planescape Torment. She is actually sporting a very similar hair style in this interview :p
"Time is not the enemy, forever is"
She's been amazing
@@alannorris3819 I think she's already confirmed
My wife has never watched me play Mass Effect, but "I should go" is absolutely a catch phrase in our house for how often she's heard it.
She sounds like a keeper (no pun intended)
I never actually ever heard the “there’s no Shepard without Vakarian” line until my inaugural playthrough of the trilogy on PS4. And wow..was that a powerful moment. I found myself in tears after that line. Honestly the trilogy as a whole hit differently playing it all over again on PS4. But that one moment…I think it has to be my favorite Shepard and Vakarian moment in the entire trilogy.
It's a great one ! Although I do prefer the banther they give each other when shooting bottles from the top of the Citadel skyline.
"Raise your hand if you havn't been killed before !"
The actors really seem to have a love for these games still, would love to see all of them return for mass effect 4
It will be interesting to see if they are back for ME 5. It's by no means a cert, but time will tell.
@@sofajockeyUK Sadly i dont think its possible for it to come out.
@@djmardo7055 We know Mass Effect 5 is in production, the open question is whether Shepard is back in any capacity.
@@sofajockeyUK It will probably be called mass effect 4, how do you know its in production? The trailer from 1 year ago?
I literally hope that doesn't happen unless they get Drew Karpyshyn to write it. He was out for Andromeda and look what happened. If these characters come back and the game is as shoddily written it will ruin every memory I have.
Mark Meer looks like he could be Matt Mercers long lost brother.
Yes! That's exactly what I thought!
I’ve only played as male Shepard, mainly because i always romanced Tali. But these 2 are Commander Shepard, no one can replace them.
I only play as female Shepard because I only romance Garrus 😂 funny how that works on both sides
Every time I replay them I switch genders. Keeps things interesting that way.
@@squares4u I've played as both male shep is underrated he's so good and has some really funny lines but I love fem shep just as much i think they both have lines they do best plus Default Femshep is a babe honest to god on my second playthrough of the legendary edition when I started as fem shep first word I said was Goddamn femsheps a babe because default femshep from mass effect 3 is now usable in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 she never used to be but u welcome the addition

Renegade Femshep >>>> Renegade MaleShep. I love Mark Meer, don't get me wrong, but there's just something so cold and menacing in Jennifer's renegade voice lines. It fits SO perfectly.
Was hoping mark would mention the fact that you can have him shoot his wife as she plays the asari scientist working for saren on virmire
Haha wtf I didn't know that
yep rana thanopotis
oh no! I killed marks wife :((
And if you didn't then in 3 it turns out she was indoctrinated and murders several asari military officials, so shooting her would have been a good decision.
I did that twice.
There's a mod that lets you find a huge pile of spectre issue armor and weapons laid out in the Spectre outpost for you to pick up and Shepard says 'and this is my favorite store on the citadel' when she sees it. It's hilarious. Because the note implies you're supposed to share with Kaiden/Ashley and Shepard just grabs it all like a greedy gut!
What's the mod name?
@@barrybend7189 EGM, Expanded Galaxy Mod I think
But... Spectres don't have issued armor. They mention it multiple times in the first game, you need to source your own gear.
@@Darchias While you need to source your own gear and it's not 'issued' per se, there's Spectre-only authorized weapons & armor sold by the C-Sec requisitions officer after Shep becomes a Spectre.
The Garrus goodbye brings tears to my eyes every time I play the game. At the end of the trilogy the crewmates feel like actual family & knowing that it is the last conversation with them really hits you
stranger things and ME are the only show/game i cried on
One of my personal favorites is about the bomb during Thane's Loyalty Mission. :D
Shepard: What am I doing here? What are you doing here?
Stock Boy: What...?
Shepard: Do you have any idea, how dangerous it is here?
Stock Boy: Dangerous?

Stock Boy: Alright! *runs off.*
Shepard: *laughs.* I can't belive that actually worked.
One of THE Best Renegade Lines
This is my favorite video on the Citadel.
The voice acting in the trilogy was so amazing. I still feel like I'm reuniting with old friends every time I play.
Me too! Playing legendary now and feeling so much nostalgia
It took me a while to come back after the ending to 3, but now I happily play through everything except for the last 8 minuets of 3 like once a year.
One of my favorite moments from femshep is the moment where she gets told the fact the Normandy is so well maintained that the 30 minute preflight check is unnecessary.
My favorite is Jennifer, but I love how they both love the series as much as the fans
Same
Buy The Spirits would be the perfect name for a turian liquor store.
What I liked the most was that their lines weren't always the same and delivery was often different too. A lot of games nowadays try to make two playable characters out of gender choice since both are voiced, but Mark and Jen actually pulled it off with one.
I wonder if they are aware of the Commander Shepard curator on steam who reviews every game with "I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite game on Steam."
I hope they're giving him a discount
Jennifers voice seems to get better with time. How?!
Mark is ...Hes living ME.
I could listen to them and all the rest of the cast talk about Mass Effect for hours upon hours and never get tired of it.
"Put more of the stuff in the thing.....more stuff goes in" is still the single best line in the trilogy. I love Garrus' "My name is Garrus Vakarian and this is my favorite spot on the Citadel!" but that line tops it.
The citadel dlc was brilliant I remember when I first did mass effect 3 I started crying at the end of the game only game I have ever cried on
What Mass Effect does to a mf. I've been there too bro, ME is a roller-coaster of emotions.
Hit me at the end of citadel and at the end of the game as well!

I love these two voice actors. Forever grateful to them for their Shepard’s work.
I recently bought an audiobook for no other reason than Jennifer Hale did the narration, and it turned out to be the best book I've read/listened to in a long time. "To Sleep in a Sea of Stars", by Christopher Paolini.
Yooooo, didn't he write the Eragon (Inheritance?) series??

Ps: You can check the adaptation of this story in the first season of Love + Death +Robots on Netflix.
I got to say "I should go" to Jennifer Hale at NYCC a few years back. I HAD to do it.
If I ever meet Jenn Hale, It'll be like Wahlberg meeting Sam Jones in TED. "Thank you for saving every one of us, Commander."
"I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite video on GameSpot."
I had no Idea that Mark did so many other voices in the series.
Mark & Jennifer Thank you for voicing & bringing life to one of the most Iconic Video Game Characters in History.
On my playthrough I played a female Shepard. So it was nice to see more of the male side of the voice acting. Didn't know he did so many voices in the game.
Mark and Jennifer should have their own talkshow.
Playing the trilogy again a few months back reminded me how unique and legendary Mass Effect is. Can't wait for 4!
Yeah…
_Mass Effect Andromeda…_
Aww man, they didn't talk about the ""we'll bang, okay" line. I mean, I get its not actually in the game but its still just as memorable as all the others and Mark Meer has said it himself a few times.
Ooh, this is so cool having both Shepards on! What a nice double feature 🥰
Renegade fem Shep is legendary. Jennifer did such an amazing job
No offense to Meer but I just picture not playing as FemShep
Just bought the Legendary Edition and I’m playing through them all!
Also: Tali is the GOAT.
Ah u are an entity of culture I see.
This one believes that the other is a being of culture.
Okay, Mark's room is kinda the best. No wall is complete without a sword and various demon skulls.
One of my favorites is a renegade line "I wonder what sound your body will make when it hits the payment. I wonder if you'll hear it before you die." In me2 when you're in the tower on illium to recruit thane. But there are so many gems throughout the trilogy. These two did so amazing.
Kudos to both of you for helping to create the most astounding adventure I've ever experienced. So many people are streaming the Legendary Edition on UA-cam, and to see how they bond with Shepard and the other characters is a testament to the voice work in those games. Thank you both!
Mark Meer is the man! Have an awesome N7 day everyone!

LMAOOOO that editing when Jennifer Hale was talking about the "I should go" and the background "I should go" "I should be going now" 💀💀💀💀💀 dead. I missed the iconic Jennifer line though "I'd rather drink a cup of acid after chewing on a razor blade"

Jennifer Hale is a genius. Amazing voice artist. Her voicing of FemShep is truly legendary and makes the character. Haven’t played as male Shepard, but Mark seems great too. Love these behind the scenes looks.

Shepard Commander, thank you for giving us such a unforgettable experience and improving our lives.
I've always been hearing Jennifer Hale in a lot of female characters for years since the 90's, like when she voiced Ivy in "Where on earth is Carmen Sandiego?" and NOW look at her!
Thats awesome! It's so neat she is in my favorite games as a child and now as an adult 🥰

The Citadel DLC in indeed a huge love letter to all the fans, and we all needed it too. It's easily the best and most emotionally resonant game experience I've ever had, and packed with gifts to us players. SO GOOD. And there would be no Mass Effect without these fantastic voice actors. Thank you.
I have played it like 10 times now, and playing it through again, and I'm right in the Citadel DLC and I'm laughing my butt off for the 11th time 😆 Best. Cast. Ever ❤

However, all I could keep thinking about was all the Manslayer videos over the years, sorry but it's too ingrained to NOT think about this when ever I see any kind of Mass Effect video now a days.
They were all my best friends through a very tough time in my life❤ These two and the entire cast and team of this trilogy saved my life❤ I will always hold them all in my heart❤
I love how invested they are in Mass Effect, you can tell how much passion went into those games lol
Mark reminds me of an older Matt Mercer.
i live in a patriarchal sexist and very conservative country (as most of us do), so I've been raised thinking that as a female I can never be strong or good enough, it was a subconscious thing even. I was a young girl when I decided to try out mass effect and I actually had the second game. I wasn't sure if I would like the game enough, so I didn't bother strarting from the first one. When I was creating my character I already knew Shepard was a spaceship captain and a soldier who is supposed to save lives and be a hero, so I thought of course I'm gonna play male Shepard, there is no way woman can fit that role. But as hard as I was trying to customize my male Shepard I couldn't make him look alive or stand out to me as a character that I can sympathise to. So I decided, maybe I just peek a little to see what playing female Shepard looks like? I was really curious. The second I heard her voice when she was evacuating the crew and how she was yelling at Joker to leave the ship... I fell in love with that voice. She sounded SO convinsing and confident, she sounded like a real leader. I immideatly closed the game to start from the first one, because I already knew I wanted to play as a female Shepard from the very beginning, I wanted to go through all the adventures with her. I played all three games and as I was watching Shepard be a strong soldier and a hero, I was growing up and changing as a person too. She was my role model and I learned that being a woman is not my weakness, despite the lack of representation back then. I know that I would've learnt that eventually, but it was Jenn Hale's Shepard's influence. I love her so much, I can literally recognize her voice anywhere. That's how she brought a character to life and how that character then inspired at least one insecure little girl. and for that I'm very thankful :)
That brought a tear to my eye.. and probably to Jenn's because she has been known to read these things. Honestly, I agree with your sentiment and I can pick her voice out in every show, 'There's this character, that one, Commander Shepard and the other character over there'.
Still, we saved the Galaxy with that voice in our heads.. showing women and girls a strong woman we can look up to and how to get the job done.
@@TheMsLourdes I'm glad I shared that then 💛
Thank you for sharing! Important message and once again another personal story of how meaningful this game really is for so many people.

I just love you guys so much! Thanks for everything you gave to us.
So a bit late to make a comment, but I FINALLY got the ME LE! I am waiting impatiently for it to finish downloading. Thank you Mark and Jennifer for all the great memories. Mass Effect is my favorite trilogy!
My favorite line from the entire trilogy is the vorcha Councilor: "PROTHEAN NO LIKE YOU!"
My favorite line requires context. During the firing line scene in the Citadel DLC, any one of the characters can say a line after they’re done shooting; if Javik say the line he says, “What primitives lack in accuracy, they make up for in ammunition.” What makes this line hilarious, however, is that the scene is an in-engine cutscene, and I guess they messed up Javik’s orientation because while everyone else is shooting the mercenaries, he’s dumping all three rounds from his shotgun into the wall about six inches away from him; you can even see the bullet holes in the wall while he’s saying his line.
"the best..." in the DLC Citadel gets me everytime. This was delivered very well. And his work im ME trilogy was superb.
the ME trilogy is something so special and so well made, it is hard to imagine any game or series matching it
