16:10 And apparently, the reason Saint Seiya was such a superior production was because of the 1986 Transformers movie that both Kozo Morishita and Shigeyasu Yamauchi, later key staff members of the former, worked on (under Toei Animation). Looking at Toriyama's work holistically, it appears he was never a writer of serious Shonen manga, but a writer of family-friendly action adventures. Daima is a nail in the coffin. DB Z was a happy accident, an artistic experiment influenced by Toriyama's supervisors. Even during the drawing Z part, he quickly returned to his roots in the form of Buu Saga with a major comedic segment. There's nothing wrong with that, but I personally tend to more mature content, more Shonen content so I can't look at Daima or similar projects.
8:18 that's just being disingenuous and dishonest. You cannot apply western logic in this. In Japan at that time, and until recently, you were only a legal adult at 20 years old. 17:34 "fully grown adult" at 18??? That's some creepy thing to say nowadays.
I never thought of it as separate. Maybe it's because I watched on the Mexican Canal 5. Before they released GT, everytime the Buu saga ended, they would go all the way back to Goku meeting Bulma. After GT was released in the late 90s in Mexico, sometimes they would only go back to the Saiyajin arc.
Ya know in Saint Seiya’s manga, there’s color pages of an elite fighting group called the Gold Saints. They’re clad in sparkling golden armor but also most of them have blonde hair 👱♀️ I wonder if Torishima saw those pages and helped give inspiration to Toriyama for designing the Super Saiyan transformation?
11:06 That tittle kiled me! it looks like a title for a Pee Wee movie or something comedic. 😂😂 This was a excelent video, Geekdom! i really the In Depth videos because you always learn something new about a subject and this one is paramount to know in case you find people asking "Where's the Z manga" there's no none because Dragon Ball always been one story from Goku living in the woods to defeating Kid Buu. I hope someday, maybe in the distant future, we get that Dragon Ball reboot and they just name it Dragon Ball. I did grew up with Dragon Ball anime, the Z portion but my nostalgia glasses are too thick when realize Dragon Ball should have been called how japanese people called it when reading the manga. I had no idea they took the Z idea from Saint Seya and called every season with a diferent letter. I think my knowledge for Sainta Seya since i only watched a bit when i was young but i dont think i liked because the animation, the fights felt silly to me.
here in France Dragon Ball was broadcast before DBZ and even if the manga was published late it still kept the same name as in its original version, namely Dragon Ball (and it was from the 1st volume to the 42nd volume) frankly I'm glad that Sueisha hasn't decided to split the One Piece anime into two after the time-skip
Thanks for the in-depth history lesson. The US releases of both the anime AND manga sure caused a lot of confusion in the community, putting Z in the name of everything or releasing them in the wrong order.
I First Saw Dragonball In The Early 90s In Spanish In The Dominican Republic. I Was Very Familiar With Goku And The Characters When They Started Airing Z On Toonami. I Realized Later On In Life That Most Americans Never Saw Dragonball. I Even Remember The Spanish Theme Song To Db, Could Sing It Word For Word
Adding the Z to the name of the series hyped it up. I was used to Dragon Ball on the SyFi channel, then when Dragon Ball Z came on Fox I was like "It's a MEGA version of Dragon Ball!". I got a little mad when Fox took the series off air before the Goku vs Frieza happened. They did the samething with Ronin Warriors. Luckily we had corner stores selling bootleg VHS tapes of the Japanese dub.
I just rewatched the Demon King Piccolo arc after YEARS of not seeing it again…and as an adult, I almost liked it better than anything I’ve seen in Z. Kinda funny, actually…but I definitely loved rewatching that arc…

Nice. Very, nice.
Dragon Ball saved me
Dragon ball is apart of my childhood and still is apart of me today and I’m happy it’s still with me
8:18 that's just being disingenuous and dishonest. You cannot apply western logic in this. In Japan at that time, and until recently, you were only a legal adult at 20 years old.
17:34 "fully grown adult" at 18??? That's some creepy thing to say nowadays.
You're the one that's being disingenuous here.
Very throughout video. Particularly how well researched it is also incorporating other contemporary works like Saint Seiya and Sailor Moon.
Only one word for this video, 'GOAT'
17:59 the 23rd Budokai is goated
This was a excelent video, Geekdom! i really the In Depth videos because you always learn something new about a subject and this one is paramount to know in case you find people asking "Where's the Z manga" there's no none because Dragon Ball always been one story from Goku living in the woods to defeating Kid Buu.
Greatest manga amd anime series of all time!
Dragon Ball z everyday of my life
Another great video
here in France Dragon Ball was broadcast before DBZ and even if the manga was published late it still kept the same name as in its original version, namely Dragon Ball (and it was from the 1st volume to the 42nd volume)
frankly I'm glad that Sueisha hasn't decided to split the One Piece anime into two after the time-skip
I like the Nostalgic music and intro
Best video geekdom ❤
Adding the Z to the name of the series hyped it up. I was used to Dragon Ball on the SyFi channel, then when Dragon Ball Z came on Fox I was like "It's a MEGA version of Dragon Ball!". I got a little mad when Fox took the series off air before the Goku vs Frieza happened. They did the samething with Ronin Warriors. Luckily we had corner stores selling bootleg VHS tapes of the Japanese dub.
Pure knowledge yo‼️
Thank you DANNY I acknowledge you ☝️
Great video.
What an interesting idea that Z era could have started later. Can you imagine the arrival of Trunks being the first episode of Dragonball Z?!
I just rewatched the Demon King Piccolo arc after YEARS of not seeing it again…and as an adult, I almost liked it better than anything I’ve seen in Z. Kinda funny, actually…but I definitely loved rewatching that arc…
I wasn't able to watch the Dragon ball part of the story until it was televise on Toonami in the early 2000s
