Thanks for the video! Most useful part for me so far was at 0:50 - how to open the inner box which contains the cable. Mine opened easily enough at the opposite end, and eventually pulled the entire length of the cable through the little hole. We live and learn, I guess :)
LOL ;)
I didn’t think that I would ever need this kind of videos
But I do now with my industrial design studio so thank you for this content
Glad you found them useful 😁
3:34 Many thanks for sharing this! I would love to have a place like that to fiddle with things! So grateful for you sharing your experience! Especially since the right side on my 770s seems to have died today : (
Great demo, I only needed to replace the metal yoke and hinge because they got dropped and bent out of shape, and I didnt want to break further by dissembling badly. Ended up being easy but video gave me confidence on how to do it!
Glad it was helpful
Thanks! Needed to see how to release the driver from the black plastic clips. Gently bending the metal shield outward did the trick!
Thank you Custom Cans for the tear down video. My cat chewed through my son's cable on his DT770 Studio headset. You made it very simple to crack open the cans. I'd like to see the parts list you use to install a detachable cable mod that you mentioned at the 10 minute mark of the video.
We used REAN mini XLR sockets and plugs. You can pick them up online pretty easily or we sell a kit

I was suggested this channel because I broke my headband clip thingy on the riggth side and needed a tear down / disassembly source, this was definitely a good suggestion, beyond what I need for my small fix but well worth the watch, I hope one day I might have the time/money/want/need to customise my 250's.
Welcome to the channel!
@@jordanjonescelestialwaffle1698 Thanks for the welcome.
its good knowing i can fix so many of the parts because ive only had one pair of headphones in my life that didnt snap and thats because the headband is just one long piece of metal with no plastic. every other pair of headphones ive had has snapped at some plastic connection. the review i watched for my current gaming headset even bent them flat to show how durable they are but after about a year of just simply opening them to put them on my head they snapped and i had to glue them back together because you cant just get replacements for it
Yes, beyerdynamic are really good at supplying spare parts
It's VERY easy to puncture the paper cover on the driver when prying off the retaining ring, as I found to my cost. It's vital to insert whatever tool you use as flat as possible to the driver. No-one in any of the strip down tutorials mentions this. Not disastrous but it creates a perfect entry point for hairs and other debris.
Yes, I am trying to mention that in the newer videas
Well I'll be ... that is one hell of a coincidence. I'm about to order the V3 kit.
Thank you for this video, just replaced the L>R wire on a 23 year old pair of these. My hunch why the red and white are switched is that on older models the negative is uncoated/screened with the white connected to +, so perhaps to keep colour coding consistent with older models.
Yes - you are probably right. It is funny how things like that happen ;)
Thanks alot for the video man! Got here to see how to remove the driver. Just got my DT 990 Pro today and it rattles like crazy under 100 hz. Decided to disassemble it fully to check for hairs like everyone is saying even though its brand new. Found literally nothing. Got the driver out and its squeaking like its been put in hell. Really Disappointed... as returning it will probably cost me more than actually getting a brand new one.
Same thing happened to me just today, not sure whether to get another pair since I lost likely voided the warranty. Or try out the dt770's but I think they can sometimes have the same problem
@@jakenotjake899 If you can get it returned or swapped with a small fee or no added cost, Do it right now and don't waste time. Don't worry its really hard to know if someone opened the headphones especially it being held on by only plastic clips, If you didn't damage it then you're in the clear.
The right channel in my pair just died on me a week ago. Im Really Really Disappointed now as it is one of the best sounding headphones ever for my taste. I don't blame Beyerdynamic but i do blame Thomann (The website i bought it from) they shipped the pair twice, cancelled the first and then shipped it again, when i got it there was a cut on the box. tried to see if i can get it returned but they didn't reply (and if they did the return cost is huge for me because im in a third world country), so im here with a dead DT 990 Pro.... Nice. Hopefully you can get yours swapped.
Very educational guide. Tremendous thanks,
The right side of my DT 770 Pro had a loose connection and i thought maybe i had to replace the whole driver like i already did with the brittle slide guards. Luckily after folliwing your instruction i saw that it were only the incoming wires that caused the trouble - so a bit of electrical tape around them and it's working perfectly fine again :)
A nice easy win by the sound of it
I have dt 770 32 om, it was interesting to see how they work inside. Thank you very much!
Glad you enjoyed it ;)
Thank you for such detailed instructions. My left side is coming in and out, I am guessing it is the cable, and yes I do wrap it around..
Yes, it is probably the cable
9:15 Oh yes, was already interesting tho now it's getting exciting : D
That place looks kinda cozy with all that wood and your tools in reach
It was very helpful. I have just repair mine.
Glad it helped
Very useful video, thank you!
You're welcome!
i think i bought my first beyers in 2006 and still have them working, only need to open them and fix cable that gives me sometimes problems... most reliable headphones, dropped them too many times on floor.. bought new pair just ti support great brand but keeping first ones until they are dead and unfixable
Love how repairable these headphones seem. My audio technica m40x's hinge just snapped completely in half after 2.5 years of wearing them on one ear. The hinge is just completely plastic. Do you reckon these would be okay to wear on one ear?
I like how the speakers in these headphones sound (32 ohm version) but they creak a lot at the point where the cups connect to the metal arm and also noise transmits through the cable very easy, every time the cable moves or is touched the noise goes right into the left earcup. How should I improve this like rubber bits at the arm joints or something
Great video thanks. I just lost sound suddenly from the left ear in these while being completely static as in, not moving the headphones, the wire or anything. Have to open and solder.
It is often a break in the cable when one side dies
@@CustomCans I have a special case. My left side headphone stopped working, but the right side still plays. Since they share a ground, I find it odd, that the headphone on the side where the external cable terminates is broken, yet the one that goes across the headband still works. Does that rule out the possibility of it being a cable break, or is a cable repair gonna help?
@@hunzhurte It is more common for the cables to break internally than the drivers suddenly dying - the positive wire for the left side may have broken - if you have a multimeter you could test it
Really useful, many thanks for this!
No problem
11:41 - No way the drivers on mine came out like that, mine seemed to be glued in such a tight way that I couldn't even see any separation between them and the surrounding plastic it all seemed just one piece and to take the drivers out it was excruciating painful.
most of them pop out easily but the odd pair either got assembled incorrectly with the driver at the wrong angle so ( you can jam them in the wrong way ) or crusty ear funk builds up in the gap over time ;)
Hello what type of plastic is used for the ear cups of the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO headphones? I broke off a piece of the ear cup on my Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO headphones, and I want to glue it back on, but I'm not sure what material the ear cups are made of
It depends how old they are - they used to be glass reinforced nylon 6 up until about a year ago and now I am not 100% sure but think it may be ABS
great vid, made it way less scary to take them apart. turns out my problem was a miniscule cat hair causing distortion lol
Yes, that i quite common - we often get headphones in for repair and it is just a hair stuck in them
@Custom Cans I wonder what the best way to avoid this is? i'm surprised a hair even got through the first little foam layer tbh.
I'm terribly afraid of breaking the cable and since there's no good quality parts available in my country I ended up using a couple of toothpicks and some duct tape to fasten the upper end of the cable. Hopefully it won't make things worse. Cheers
We do ship parts world wide but duct tape can work miracles ;)
@@CustomCans even Iran? That would be fantastic.
There is one single flaw with these. Something about when you shift an ear-cup slightly, usually when first putting it on, they way the metal bar is held by some plastic, sometimes it makes a loud CLUNK. It happens about ever 40th time. It's SUPER annoying. I need to figure out how to stop that.
That is called character ;) You could probably open up the shoulders and put some felt or something round the clicking mechanism to prevent it
thanks
I have mold behind the black foam on the white papery stuff. Is there a way to replace the white stuff behind the foam or should I just get new headphones?
That is not something I have tried - you may be able to clean it off with a little bleach and water and some cotton buds or something
after only a couple months the left ear started to rattle at certain frequencies. I read it's most likely a hair on the sound driver. any advise on fixing my issue?
Yes that is often the case - I would carefully dismantle them and give the front and back for the driver a good blow to dislodge anything that may be in there
my ear peice popped out and the screws are still there, any fix for this? Maybe tightening the screws would help?
Sorry, I am not 100% sure which bit you are talking about but ... If it is the hinge on the side if the earcup then undo the screw, put the hinge back together and then put the screw back in. If it is the piece next to the head pad then you may have stripped the threads in that piece... You can either buy a replacement part or look up some videos on fixing stripped threads in plastics
Following a different video's method by pressing down with a small screw driver I put a hole in the out white tissue paper near the edge of the clamp ring. Do you know if this will effect the sound of the driver itself? I would imagine the driver is not that large in diameter.
No, you should be fine, but... I would stick a bit of masking tape over the hole you made just to make sure
Hi ! The 0 is for negative and 1 positive or it's the other way around ?
yes, that is correct
Have we done pad swapping and sound testing yet ?? would like this !
no but I will try to get it done next week
@@CustomCans thank you :- ) !
11:42 Why my speaker does not come out ? It is my right speaker instead of the left
my right side isnt working. i noticed those like tiny hair cables are not there. can it be replaced?
not really - some people have managed to repair them but it is very difficult and probably takes longer than it is worth
Interesting, so when you compare DT770 to any other closed back, the enlarged cup size is entirely irrelevant because it's essentially blocked off internally so the driver has about as much space as it would on something like an MD7506, M40X, HD280, etc. At this point, the larger cup is just to hold the pads whereas the 990s and 880s dampen the inside of the cups themselves.
I've put velour pads on my DT770s and cut out the extra bass it produces and the sound is now way flatter and more balanced sounding, with good, clear mids. I'm wondering if I can get the same effect with an open earcup, and the kind of dampening they stick into a DT880. Hmm, I feel some experimental cup designs are going to make their way into my future.
Where is the extra bass in dt770!? They sound hollow at best with bass that's very narrow. And I am not even starting with ear drum hurting treble
@@martinkulik9466 Which DT770s did you get? Mine had base that muddied up and masked the mids. And what music are you listening to?
@@ulfrinn8783 80ohm. I listen to everything. Even speech, piano drums, house music, old music... Anything. Dt770 left me empty and desired the 50-100x I tested them. I am much happier with superlux 681 Evo. Audio Technica ar1is or Anker q30. Dt770 are terrible sounding headphones and I can't believe ppl praise them.
@@ulfrinn8783 dt770 are audio fraud plastic driver crap masked in steel and leather body to fool people. They have terrible musicality that they pretend with elevated piercey treble to fool people they are detailed. Mastered songs sound sibilant With female singinging and they are most sold headphones.... It's crazy how ppl are fooled and copy each other convincing something shitty is good coz others said so
Great Video! Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hi, I came across your video, I loved it and subscribed! Quick question, I have 3 pairs of DT770 PRO and all 3 of them have been carefully handled but on all 3 of them the LEFT ear piece just stopped working. All my other brands of headphone continued to work, I'm not sure if this is some flaw in the design or if my clients who put away the headphones sometimes wrap them too tightly but I always try and stop people from doing that because I always lightly coil them rather then tightly wrap them. Do you think if I open them up I should be looking to a specific area of the headphones or just replace the cable entering the headphones? Let me know what I should look at first. Your advice is greatly appreciated! You got a sub from me either way!
Yes it will be the coiling up of the cable - the internal wires eventually get twisted up so tight that they break. We have replacement cables in stock if you fancy DIYing it or we offer a send in repair service.
I remember being taught the "over under" technique to coil wires when I helped out at events and thinking it was nonsense but now I have seen inside some cables that have been coiled up loads of times I can see why it is a thing
Okay thanks for the reply . I ended up ordering three cables on ebay for 23.00 from China. Hopefully when they get here they work I'm going to give it a try to take them apart and solder them. I'll keep you updated if I can't get them fixed I would definitely love to ship them for a fix from you . Of course I will be very careful not to burn the circuit board when soldering those small points
not pretty? these are the best looking headphones I ever seen m8
They do look like they mean business
The white tissue paper, i was replacing the ear pads and the dust filter, and when you know it, the ring wouldnt come of and i accidently poked a sort of rectangle hole in that white paper. I dont think i have hit anything inside of the speak, because all the sound is the same, clear and nothing else for now. And im worried, do i have to worrie?
Should be fine - you could cover the hole with a small bit of masking tape
@@CustomCans Thank you❤️
I'm so glad I subscribed!
I'm so glad you subscribed too ;)
My dog chewed the cable connecting the left and right ear things. Would i be able to just reconnect the wires and wrap some electrical tape around it?
It may work.. Some of the headband cables have a coating that needs to be removed or it won't make a connection. Worth giving it a go though
I own a pair of 250 ohms and I'm very much interested in modding my gear. I was wondering what could be modded on the 770's to make them just that little better. I know the detachable mini-xlr mod is possible and even the balanced one but what possibilities do I have to actually mod/replace the driver with something even beafier? I was wondering would putting 600 ohm drivers of the 880 be a good idea? Anyways, fantastic and simple video on the disassembly of these headphones which I will surely use as reference when I start my modding journey!
We have this mod kit which helps squeeze a little more goodness out of them
ua-cam.com/video/9aQ4FP4WntA/v-deo.html
I added some padding (paper mod) to alleviate some sibilance but managed to puncture the white paper disc (the part Beyerdynamic call "system") in between the "spokes", very far out towards the edge of the cup. Driver itself is fine. Will the sound be fine or should I just go ahead and order a replacement system?
Thankful for your tear down video!
If it is a small hole, I would cover it with masking tape and you should be fine
@@CustomCans Will do. Cheers!
I killed one of the eyes onthe stupid circuit board, even while it wasn't that hot, it's the second DT 770 pro which is now on the graveyard. I'm quite mad at Beyerdynamics. Always Happens after guarantee
Do you have repair manual for beyerdynamic T70 sir? Mine don't t have sound on the right speaker. Fell down from desk to the ground accidentally. And no repair service in my country.😭
No Sorry but from what I remember, they come apart the same as the T1s

Nice video, thanks
Thanks (•̀ᴗ•́)൬༉
helped SOOOOO much, thx
No problem - glad you found it helpful ;)
I just got a pair of DT770 32 ohm and an 80 ohm pair. The 80 ohm pair has noticeably less clamp force than the 32 ohm pair. Do you think the head bow could be defective?
It could be the different pads
@@CustomCans I have the velours on both. I got a black set for the 32 ohm pair.
Now i know how to open them thx, but i don't know to fix my problem, the left side suddenly became much quieter.
You may have a broken cable causing a short on the left side. you could use a digital multimeter to check the impedance on each side and see if the left has a much lower impedance. If you need to replace the cable, there is a vid here
ua-cam.com/video/41pawRS0Rm4/v-deo.html
@@CustomCans Thanks but i found my problem already
Both wires from the left side broke off inside and it also took out a small metal ish part with it from the board itself
Is there any chance it will survive 😢
maybe... if they are the newer type with the wires soldered to a little PCB then it is probably fixable. If it is the older type with 3 metal tabs then they may be dead
@@CustomCans Thank you for replying!
It’s definitely the newer one which is flat with the little gold ish inlays and one of the flat plates came off and is attached to the wire
@@ayim05 email over some pictures to info@customcans.co.uk and we can you you some advice on fixing them
@@CustomCans Thank you so much! Alright!

Hey, I'm not sure if you have ever come across something like this before but I got a pair of dt770s last july and today they suddenly broke for an unknown reason after unplugging them from my pc and plugging them to my phone, I'm wondering whether the drivers might have broken or something and maybe you could help :)
I think they have a 2yr warranty so I would get them repaired - contact the place you purchased them or beyerdynamic
@@CustomCans Update on the topic: they randomly started sounding better all of a sudden, though they still sound worse on the highs. Anyway, i think i should get them checked, thanks a lot
i hope i never need to replace the cable of my DT 770 Pro 80 ohm, but if i do, im gonna blame someone in the house for breaking in it (if they did) and order that they pay for the fix
LOL
Hi!
10:06 that looks too easy... I chipped my plastic crowbar tool trying to remove that part. Though I'm disassembling T90.
From what i remember you have to pry the T70 and T90 from a edge where the pad attaches - If you have a hint through our other videos, I am sure I have done some T70s before which are built the same
@@CustomCansIndeed, that was the way to do it. I couldn't find a video for T90, but I found one for T1, after watching yours, and that's what it showed.
Do you sell any drivers that have solid bass (not hollow underdesired of dt770) and not ear drum hurting piercey sharp metallic treble like these dt770 shits? I have them for sale but nobody wants to buy these overhyped bandwagons sounding like crap, so am thinking to put different drivers
There are a few different versions of the 770 By the sounds of it you may have the 250ohm ones which can be a bit harsh with some amps. The 80ohm ones have the best bass and can be turned into bass monsters with a bit of modding. Which version did you buy?
@@CustomCans actually I have 80ohm. they have somewhat punchy bass bit it's in narrow spectrum sounding hollow. They lack the broad bass fullness of the sound... I am very disappoint with that sound. Thanks for reply.
@@CustomCans even frequency response shows treble is elevated and whole bass is reduced with ocassional peaks for that narrow punch. They lack in 200-300hz which is backbone of the sound to name. They have recessed vocals and I am flabbergasted when I see studios and radios using them...probably due to sturdy design construction because their sound is shockingly bad. Do you think their whole bass can be elevated? I am thinking to put different drivers at this stage...
@@martinkulik9466 I think it will probably cost more to replace the drivers than the headphones cost originally. We have made adapters for people to fit T50RP drivers in them but I recon ebaying them and buying something else will be the easiest / cheapest solution as even if you fit drivers with the sound signature you want, there will probably still be a bit of tuning to do as things like the size of the earcup, the size of the bass port and the pads used will all affect the sound.
Changing the drivers will probably be a fun project but I suspect there will be a lot of work to do to get everything dialled in.
On the other hand - DT770 drivers sell fro around £45 each so you could probably make the cost back by selling the original drivers
@@CustomCans thanks I checked your website but hard to navigate on mobile and find those drivers. Will check on desktop. But I was thinking to buy superlux 681 and use those drivers dampeners into dt770 frame...or I might try to put dt770 on ebay because last time today testing them my eardrums hurt after 2 minutes. But I don't know if it's sound or some vacuum effect... I have 5 other headphones no problem...
6:11 Yeah, ESPECIALLY THEN XDDDDDDDDD
HELLO !!!!!!
