Even though this video is already 6yrs old, it's not outdated at all. I just got new pads for my Beyerdynamics and your video is just perfect. The tipp using the hair dryer is the best. It worked perfectly for me within 2 minutes.
Thanks for the video. Two things I just found out putting new ear pads for the first time: 1. It's easier to pop out the ring from the inside. Just insert a flathead screw driver (as parallel as possible to the pads) and leverage it up. 2. Putting the new ear pads on can be done without a hair dryer (it's night here, so I didn't want to wake up the house). When you put on the pad "lip" at the bottom, don't put it all the way in but just enough so that the bottom doesn't slip out. This will give you more room to work with as you put the rest of the pad on. When the whole ear pad is on, just stretch it around so that the lip has the same cover all around. Good luck!
Actually, there is a FAR, FAR easier method of slipping-on the earpads: Simply fold-back the entire plastic lip, and then flip it over the headphone cups. EASY!
As I am about to replace the pads on my 10 year old DT770s, this video was incredibly helpful. I like your supportive and very precise language, and levity throughout what can be a frustrating process. Joining many other commenters in thanking you for taking the time to produce such a useful video!
the sound quality is really good on the dt 770 pro but the pads and headphones itself are so small. I have small ears and even then it's a tight fit. Cheaper headphones for some reason are more comfortable and fit around the ear better since they are oval shaped and not circular
I struggled with one of the exterior pads for 2 weeks - one of them was just so impossibly tight that I was considering just returning them. This video saved me. The hairdryer trick did it. Thank you!
I have to swap out 20 sets of felt earpads for vinyl ones to clean between uses, and was on the verge of chucking the things out the window, before watching this video. You saved my sanity, thank you.
I'm ashamed that I'm 23 years old and needed my old man to do this for me. Maybe it's just a difference in experience, but he managed to do everything in under 2 mins while it took me half an hour and went nowhere. Regardless, thanks for the reference. Next time I will do it myself and remember this video!
When my old 770's broke a clip on the right side, I decided to replace them with the new 770 pro X's with the newer drivers tuned to sound like the old ones. I liked them well enough, but when I found out how cheap it was to fix the old ones, I ordered a 3d-printed set of replacement clips plus the muff and headband replacement parts, and this video was a huge help getting things together. I now have a fully refurbished pair of 770's my daughter gets to enjoy for years to come, so thanks! PRO TIP: The reason it's so difficult for you to slip the earmuff collar over the lip of the driver housing is you're putting your index finger over the seal and "inside" the O to grasp it. This puts your finger in the way of what you're trying to do. Instead, slip one side of the muff collar over the gasket area so about a third of it is in place, hold it with your left thumb and index as you do, and starting at the point the collar crosses over and goes "off", use your thumb to pull the collar away from the lip, allowing it to slip up and over into place as you release. It's sort of like thumbing a lighter switch, you want to roll the seal out. Your thumb goes around the circle pulling the collar out and away from the flanged area, stretching it out, up, and over the lip. This way, your fingers are never in the way and if you're pulling outward on it, and not trying to get around your own finger, it's easy as pie and takes less than 30 seconds
I did not realize until I did this how gross my old pads had become. They're my daily drivers so there was a slow-boil frog thing going on, but I really had no excuse for letting them get that bad
Great video, straight to the point and with some much needed motivational speaking throughout - right when you said "be patient, it will work", i was not being patient.
Just done it for the first time in my life! No heaters, only hands. Man, it was frustrating at first, not knowing what to do, but with your vid I understood that I shouldn't be so gentle with the edges. I flipped them back to maximize their stretchiness, and I held with my hand every bit of progression of putting those edges on the cap. Thank you. ♥ Replaced my DT770 Pro's earpads after almost three years. My new headband is almost here too to replace the old crumbling one. I LOVE my DT770. ♥
when i was replacing the original earpads some 2 years ago i was cussing and on the brink of going to cry in the corner of the room.... but your hairdryer method prevented that and i was done replacing the pads in about 5 minutes. these are the best headphones i ever owned but the method to replace the pads is the product of the devil himself... superb video man!!

Wanted to clean up my headphones and didnt know how to remove and then install the pads. This was a great video, very informative, straight to the point and helpful. Keep it up!
Thanks for the excellent guide, this was a great help. It took around 30 mins on my first attempt. Found that getting the last bit at the top was the trickiest, but listened to your advice and took my time and got it eventually :)
Excellent tutorial thank you so much, just replaced mine. For anyone struggling with the second part, and without a hairdryer, I found that flipping the black band that's meant to latch on inside-out helps, that way after you have the first part on you're working from the outside rather than trying to get your fingers inside it. Flipping it inside and out a couple of times too made it seem more pliable in general too. The flathead is helpful for pushing the final bits in between the pinch points
Hi Bruno, great video and super clear instructions, I changed my dt770 pads from faux black leather to grey velour today, about 6 minutes, super quick, hair dryer works a treat, you've done a really great video mate, cheers Dave
Wtf. I saw your Video years ago and tried it without seeing it again. No way. But now, after watching it again. 10 seconds for one side. You are my hero. Thank you so much. I feel like I could cry. And the headphones feel as new. Thank you man.
I appreciate the video guide! I'm always hesitant to pry certain parts open out of fear of breaking them. Always nice to have a good point of reference with some handy tips
Yes, the procedure is the same - bear in mind that changing to the grey pads may change the sound slightly as they are not made of the same material as the stock pads for this model.
I do love how tis tutorial is still relevant 4 years after being uploaded and will probably still be relevant 4 - 5 years from now. Like he said at the end, pretty remarkable in this day and age.
Clear simple instructions, made even better by the good quality video and lighting. Thank you. 30 seconds with the hairdryer on high power did it for me.
Top tip if you can't heat the pads: if you first **invert** the flexible ridge all the way round and then flip it back, it stretches the ridge enough that I was able to attach them as easily as this video made it look, with no heating required. NB: this may be technically not as nice as doing it the heating way, since you're stretching it cold it's going to tighten back less than if you heated it. Worked for me though, and AFAICT it looks nice as this video's results.
I find it that regardless of heating, flipping them outwards\inverting them first, then placing the pads to the ears and flipping back is much much much faster and easier to do than the method shown in the video. With heating it would be even easier.
Excellent video, good visuals with clear narration! These Beyerdynamic are produced since 4000 years, they are just somewhat updated over time. They do not look fancy, there are no marble cups and no platinum plating. As a result, their price is relatively lower compared to other quality headphones. And because they don't keep on changing their products with every season, we can get spare parts for almost everything.
Thanks! I've just replaced my DT990 earpads. Didn't even need to heat up the outer pads I just used force to pull and it was easy to get it in place. What a difference in soundstage! My old pads were squished and torn so this was a needed upgrade.
The tutorial is really well done! Lots of helpful tips, direct and understandable and of very good quality! Thank you! This video will still be needed in 10 years.
Thank you for this tutorial! The hardest part was putting on the pads, wow I wanted to throw the headphones out the window at some point. But eventually I did it. Very nice, looking & sounding brand new 6 years after purchasing :)
I took off the pads out of curiosity and regretted it instantly lmao. Managed to get it back on and I recommend putting it on halfway, pressing it on the table so it wont move and do the rest with a flat objekt (I used the handle of a spoon).
Actually, there is a FAR, FAR easier method of slipping-on the earpads: Simply fold-back the entire plastic lip, and then flip it over the headphone cups. EASY!
Great video, just replaced on dt990 pros. this video helped a ton especially with the inner ring. I'm sure I'll find myself back here in a couple of years time. 10/10
Actually, there is a FAR, FAR easier method of slipping-on the earpads: Simply fold-back the entire plastic lip, and then flip it over the headphone cups. EASY!
Put the pads in your armpit for 1 min and its ready to go! Also my HP were cracked in the plastic on both sides... Don´t know how but anyways. Got them on in the end. Great tutorial! My DTs live once more!
I was wondering if there are leather earpads for Beyerdynamic headphones. I would like to try them, but it seems like there are no such official Beyerdynamic earpads.
Did it with no hair drier no problem. Only took about 30 seconds. I just engaged the lip of the pad around the ring then worked my way around. Once I was about 1/2 way around I alternated working it around each side.
Also, a lot of additional heating while mounting them back. And a little tweezers or something like that won’t harm. Thanks for the instruction! I managed to replace one of them fine, damaged the other one a little. I used the same old ones, just threw them in the washer for half an hour.
Actually, there is a FAR, FAR easier method of slipping-on the earpads: Simply fold-back the entire plastic lip, and then flip it over the headphone cups. EASY!
Just a suggestion: I find it easier to place the pad onto the ring before installing the ring on the headphone cup. There is a notch on the ring that helps to hold the pad in place while working around the ring.
Thank you so much for this one friend. For some strange reason, replacing pads on head monitors always terrorized me lol. This gave me confidence. Regarding the DT line, their ear pads look weird even when new. But the headphones are 100% value for money. Best ear monitors i ever had in that price range. I own the open back DT 990.
I'm pretty sure they will not fit as the DT-150s use a rectangular pad rather than circular. You may be able to get aftermarket velour pads for the 150s though.
I just found my dt 990's on the floor with cat sick on the foam. Of all the times and places to be sick, it had to be specifically on my headphones. Thanks for the great video, I will be cleaning and soon ordering a new set of pads
When I removed the clamping ring I accidentally rip a tiny bit part of the white stuff that looks like web that is inside, is it something I have to worry about?
I came here because I removed the thin black pads and didn't know how to put them back in. I didn't know the hairdryer trick to get the silver pads back on. I just flipped out the entire "flexible ridge"and then flipped it back. I don't know if this would stretch out brand new ones.
I'm doing a second replacement today and it makes me DREAD the whole process. Thanks for the refresher how to do this. First time I did it without the hairdryer, now I'm going the "easy" route.
Hey man, so i've basically been getting rattling in my right ear speaker on my dt 990 pro. I found that it was because i had hairs on the driver membrane. And me (being stupid) decided that it was a good idea to use my METAL tweezers. It stuck the the magnet and the membrane is now stuck to it. My warranty has gone (by 1 month) how do i unstick the membrane from the magnet?
great video. i’ve got a pair of 990s and i took a close(ish) look at them for the first time in ages, today. boy do those get dirty 😭. will be using this to replace mine soon! thanks for the guide
be careful when removing the locking ring. i dont know if this happens on all models, but on my 770's the locking ring also holds in the speaker, gave me quite the shock when it fell out during cleaning. Its easy enough to put back but its definitely something to be aware of.
Thank you for the tutorial~ Made it easy for me the first time I've replaced the pads. It all looks brand new and sounds just as great, if not better, than I first got it~
Thank you for this video! I have never done it before and managed to get it done in under 5 minutes. It was a bit scary though. I love my DT 770 Pro and anything that keeps them alive is extremely appreciated. I used a dull table knife to open the ring, at first I used a screwdriver but that almost ended badly.
You're welcome Benjamin :) A butter or table knife is actually an excellent tool for this purpose - even better than a screwdriver because it has a rounded tip. I also know people who use automotive trim tools that are made of plastic.
Just wanted to comment and say thank you. This is the second time I've been to this video, the first was to remove the original pads for cleaning (the silver ones.. I had no luck getting that dingy color out of them) and now to replace them with the black pads. I would only add 1 tip if you are having trouble with the last part like I was... at the last part I hold the outer shell of the earcup in the palm of my hand, also holding what I've got on the earpad trim... then I just stretch the pad out from the inside with my other hand if that makes any sense. This way I didn't have to use my fingers trying to pry the trim out. I also used a few seconds of high heat beforehand for a bit of extra pliability. I noticed a crack in mine in the plastic part of the headband, hopefully there are replacements of those too if it ever breaks.
Yes, once the pads have been on for a while they tend to 'set' and it can be very hard to remove and reinstall them a second time, especially if they are cold.
Thank you. I let mine deteriorate to the point of being able to see the foam inside. So this has been long overdue. I did find it to be a super easy process. I used the larger flat-head from a computer screwdriver set, to loosen ones side. Then I was able to pull off the ring with my fingers. Then I warmed the pads for about a minute each, maybe less, on the warm setting with high fan speed. I made sure to first point the dryer so air got inside the edges, then went around the outside. They went on super easy, and I had both on in minutes.
I have DT 1990 Pro's and I'm in the process of ordering new pads now. They seem very similar to the 990's so this video is helpful. I am going to take these old ones out tonight and try to wash them but I want to buy some new ones just to have. You also gave an amusing tip about not using a heatgun; if you're reading this, don't use a heatgun on any household items. If you don't know what a heat gun is.. imagine if a hairdryer just kept getting hotter until it could ignite things and heat items over 1100 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't use that casually.
At first I did this without knowing about the hairdryer part, and I had managed to do it just fine, but the leathery bits stretched when I put the pad on, so the pad was able to spin around. But after watching this video, I redid it and heated it with the hairdryer, and it doesn't spin around as much anymore! So thank you for the advice haha, even though solving my particular issue wasn't the goal of the video
You could use the heat from your hands or even try sitting on the pads for a while to warm them up! I've also heard people use steam from a kettle or putting the pads into a sealed bag and then into a basin of warm water, but these are all risky - you don't want to get the drivers wet.
Bought the 770 pro brand new and its been killing my ears. The clamp is good but the earpads themselves are just too firm and hurt the surrounding area of my ear. Should I replace them or just keep using them for a couple more days? Some people have been saying it gets better.
Yeah don't listen to what anybody else says when it comes to headphones - everybody has a different combination of head size/shape, ear size/shape, fit preference and so on. You have to find what works for you. Also, fit and sound quality are two different things - a pair of headphones may sound fantastic but if they don't fit you the sound doesn't matter 😅
Thank you for this tutorial! I find the prying part a little scary, but managed to pull through nonetheless. After replacing the ear pad, I noticed a dramatic improvement over the low frequency :)
also a tip: don't get the black plastic too hot. It is just optical but the material gets too soft and flexible, making it easier to put it on but it won't look like original. So slow down, only slightly hot and do the dragging from underneath like it is shown in this video. Also, use your old pads for practise ;)
What if the inner white foam filter is damaged / ripped as well? (not just the outer black one that you're putting on top with the replacement earpad) Is there any way to fix it or replace it?
I'm pretty sure that the white surface that you can see inside the earcup is a grille and not the diaphragm itself, so I wouldn't worry. It's doing its job!
If you are still having trouble. For the really last step when there is just a small piece of rubber left to get on. Take the blunt side of a toothpick and thread it under the earmuff to push the rubber out over the lip. This helps get the last part over without having to push the whole earmuff which is usually what causes problems.
Thank you so much for this video, actually second time that I am looking up this video. I have some DT770 Pro 250 and I wanted the original replacement pads even though there are more cheaper ones out there. Guys go for the real deal... Thank you so much for this video. Made it easy again.

Yes the pads are really important in interfacing the headphones to your ears.
Can you put the ear cushions back on without having to apply low heat first or do you need to apply heat to make it fit back on

Great video, just replaced on dt990 pros. this video helped a ton especially with the inner ring. I'm sure I'll find myself back here in a couple of years time. 10/10
Glad the video was helpful!
Amazing, your instructions were great. Just finished replacing the ear pads on my DT770 for the first time after 15 years of use! Cheers.
I think 15 years must be a world record! 😄
Actually, there is a FAR, FAR easier method of slipping-on the earpads:
Simply fold-back the entire plastic lip, and then flip it over the headphone cups.
EASY!
Worked like a dream! Quick tip; keep the hair dryer at hand to heat the edges as you go
Glad to hear that :)
Hello, thank you for the tutorial. It was very helpful and the ear pads installation was surprisingly extremely easy on my end. Thanks again! :)
That's great! Enjoy your new earpads :)
Put the pads in your armpit for 1 min and its ready to go! Also my HP were cracked in the plastic on both sides... Don´t know how but anyways. Got them on in the end. Great tutorial! My DTs live once more!
thank you, u saved my freaking life, i almost broke my fingers trying to install the pads, didn't know about the hair dryer thing
Very glad to hear that!
I was wondering if there are leather earpads for Beyerdynamic headphones. I would like to try them, but it seems like there are no such official Beyerdynamic earpads.
The DT770M model features black leatherette earpads which give more isolation that the velour ones.
@@GLBProductions Thanks for the information! Guess I'll get these some day.
That's interesting, I would have thought that old, used pads would be easier to re-attach than the brand new ones shown in the video.

Just a suggestion: I find it easier to place the pad onto the ring before installing the ring on the headphone cup. There is a notch on the ring that helps to hold the pad in place while working around the ring.
Thanks for the suggestion Anthony :)
Glad the video was helpful :)
What if I try to put those nice microfiber pads into the DT-150s? Thanks!
Good luck with that!
Perfect, well explained.
Took 30 seconds to put on, I’ve been dreading doing it for weeks.
That's great, enjoy the new pads!
Will the ear covers from
The 770 pros limited fit on the normal 770 pros?
I've never tried this, but typically all 770, 880 and 990 pads are cross-compatible. If they look like they will fit they should fit.
When I removed the clamping ring I accidentally rip a tiny bit part of the white stuff that looks like web that is inside, is it something I have to worry about?
No I wouldn't worry about that - there is a steel grille underneath that to protect the drivers.
i have just changed those pads and..the sound itself feels more direct...mostly bcs those pads isolate better than worn out
Great to hear that!
The heating technique just saved me from loosing my mind haha thank you good sir !
Great to hear that! Beyer know what they are doing when they wrote the installation instructions 😊
I came here because I removed the thin black pads and didn't know how to put them back in. I didn't know the hairdryer trick to get the silver pads back on. I just flipped out the entire "flexible ridge"and then flipped it back. I don't know if this would stretch out brand new ones.
Some people manage to do it that way - the problem is that the points where the yoke attaches tend to get in the way.
I'm doing a second replacement today and it makes me DREAD the whole process. Thanks for the refresher how to do this.
First time I did it without the hairdryer, now I'm going the "easy" route.
Hope it worked out!
I suggest you get in touch with Beyer directly - send them a picture of the problem and ask for their advice.
5 years later and still helpful. Thanks
You're welcome Ben!
Thank you for the guide! The clumping ring removal is the same as for Custom One Pro plus version
You're welcome!
great video. i’ve got a pair of 990s and i took a close(ish) look at them for the first time in ages, today. boy do those get dirty 😭. will be using this to replace mine soon! thanks for the guide
You're welcome! Yes you don't want all that dirt getting into your ears...
Thank you kindly! I just changed my 990 earpads following your instructions and it went smooth as silk.
Great news!
be careful when removing the locking ring. i dont know if this happens on all models, but on my 770's the locking ring also holds in the speaker, gave me quite the shock when it fell out during cleaning. Its easy enough to put back but its definitely something to be aware of.
That's definitely something to watch out for!
I have no hair dryer, what about if I put it inside a oven for a short period of time to warm it up!? Please let me know
I would be really careful doing that - you might destroy them. Try putting them in the sun instead or some other form of gentle heat.
You might not need it but you can try to put them into a plastic bag and then into a warm water ;)
The hairdryer tip made all the difference. Thank you!
You're welcome Andrew!
Thank you for the tutorial~ Made it easy for me the first time I've replaced the pads. It all looks brand new and sounds just as great, if not better, than I first got it~
You're welcome - it's amazing what replacing these touch points will do for an older pair of headphones :)
Thanks for the comment - good points made! 👍
this is the method that helped me - cheers
Thank you so much for the clear and concise tutorial! The hairdryer made the process *so* much easier.
You're most welcome, glad the video was helpful!
"Sometimes you have to push and pull and swear". Followed your instructions precisely 😉. Your guide is like Porto wine: aged very well. Thank you.
You're welcome Telmo, thanks for watching 😄 I appreciate fine wine 🍷
Thanks for the video, it helped me a lot. I can see why Beyer changed this pad replacement system with the DT1990, much easier to swap the pads.
You're welcome! How do you like the 1990s?
That heating tip is a life saver. I broke my original pads before when I tried to put them back on.
Glad it all worked out for you 😀
thank you!!! after many years, these headphones sound incredible
Yes they do!
Yes the 990s are very similar - only the earcups are different.
You're welcome, enjoy the new pads!
Are there any other methods of heating up the ear pads if i don't have a hair dryer? Wishing i was at home so i could use my mums 😂
You could use the heat from your hands or even try sitting on the pads for a while to warm them up! I've also heard people use steam from a kettle or putting the pads into a sealed bag and then into a basin of warm water, but these are all risky - you don't want to get the drivers wet.
just spilled soda on my earpads. i wouldnt have known to heat up the earpads before putting the new ones on, so thanks for making this!
You're welcome, glad the video was helpful :)
Bought the 770 pro brand new and its been killing my ears. The clamp is good but the earpads themselves are just too firm and hurt the surrounding area of my ear. Should I replace them or just keep using them for a couple more days? Some people have been saying it gets better.
Headphone fit is a very personal thing - I would say keep using them and see if you get used to the way they feel.
@@GLBProductions true. It's just been weird to me how my small head is having issues and everyone's praising these. Thanks
Yeah don't listen to what anybody else says when it comes to headphones - everybody has a different combination of head size/shape, ear size/shape, fit preference and so on. You have to find what works for you. Also, fit and sound quality are two different things - a pair of headphones may sound fantastic but if they don't fit you the sound doesn't matter 😅
my entire ear muff came off and i cant get it back on and there are no disassembly videos out there
I suggest contacting your local Beyerdynamic dealer for advice.
Thank you for this tutorial! I find the prying part a little scary, but managed to pull through nonetheless. After replacing the ear pad, I noticed a dramatic improvement over the low frequency :)
9:13 totally agree here. It's been 10 years of my old dt880, still my daily drive, really a solid investment
You're welcome, glad the video was helpful :)
also a tip: don't get the black plastic too hot.
For that you'll need to send the headphones back to Beyerdynamic. However I suspect it doesn't affect the sound quality very much.
That shouldnt really affect the sound. you can either send them to beyer or order the drivers from their website and replace them yourself.
Was actually way easier than I thought it would be. Very helpful video!
Thanks for watching!
I used a thin plastic guitar pick to help me guide the ear pads over the plastic rim after heating up with the hairdryer
Interesting tip!
Swap worked flawlessly with the help of your video with my DT 880. Thanks!
That's great Gerry, enjoy the new pads!
Thanks! I was a little confused about the small pictures in the instructions so this helped a lot!
Very glad to hear that!
I accidentally dented the diaphragm, should I be worried at all? They still sound fine from what I can tell.
I'm pretty sure that the white surface that you can see inside the earcup is a grille and not the diaphragm itself, so I wouldn't worry. It's doing its job!
Thanks, that went well. A quick blast of hairdryer afterwards helps the ear pads settle and removes any wrinkles.
Glad to hear that :)
can this help to remove rattleing when i play bass in my headphones
No it will not help - there's nothing in the pads themselves that can rattle.
Thank you! The plastic clamps were a real PITA to get off. This made it a whole lot easier!
Glad the video was helpful :)
If you are still having trouble. For the really last step when there is just a small piece of rubber left to get on.
Take the blunt side of a toothpick and thread it under the earmuff to push the rubber out over the lip.
This helps get the last part over without having to push the whole earmuff which is usually what causes problems.
Thanks for the tip 😀
Thank you so much for this video, actually second time that I am looking up this video. I have some DT770 Pro 250 and I wanted the original replacement pads even though there are more cheaper ones out there. Guys go for the real deal... Thank you so much for this video. Made it easy again.
Thanks for watching, again 😄
Thanks, didn't have a hair dryer but managed to do it without heat or tools. Was more worried about getting the lock ring out.
Glad it worked out!
