- Hey everybody and welcome to Leia's Lair. In this episode, we have made a different Star Wars ship explained video. This video goes over and explains the comparison between the X-Wing T-65B Starfighter and the TIE/LN space superiority starfighter in canon. The two starfighters face off in the Battle of Yavin in Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope. We go over the technical specifications of both ships and compare the two fighters to see which one is better. Tie fighters and x-wings are two of the best star fighters in the galaxy
TIE fighters are pretty crappy actually, but X-wings are pretty good
Regardless of how you feel about the sequels, when Poe steals one in the beginning of TFA, I love the line when he punches it out of the hangar
“Woah these things really move!” And his mild excitement “I’ve always wanted to fly one of these.”
Something that all star wars lore channels get wrong about comparing the TIE/LN Fighter and the T65B X-wing is that they compare them in an apples to apples way.
The truth is, the two ships were desinged for different purposes with different resources to different standards.
In a nutshell:
The TIE/LN Fighter was designed as a short range defense fighter with one purpose: defending assets from enemy fighters and intercepting enemy ships. They posessed far greater maneuverability, acceleration and speed (the latter is proven during the Battle of Yavin, when Luke tells his wingmates to set full throttle, yet the TIEs catch up easily), and better anti-fighter laser cannons. The two light laser cannons had a better rate of fire and were more accurate than the X-wings medium laser cannons. They were also known for their ability to punch straight through shields.
They were pure performance machines. Maneuverability, acceleration and anti-starfighter firepower was emphasized. They also posessed warhead launchers, though they were rarely equipped with missiles, only when they were outnumbered. This was done so that the TIEs could fire a volley of missiles to take down starships before the got in range.
The T65B X-wing was an attack fighter desinged to attack smaller ships and space stations, and participate in large battles, and be capable of carrying out tasks without requiring too much support from other vessels. It had superior firepower compared to TIEs, but the armaments were mostly effective against larger targets. For example, the spaced out cannons had a huge spread, as they were mounted on the wings opposed to the TIE, which had center mounted cannons. Torpedoes were also meant to be fired against large and slow targets. Their shields made it possible for them to survive point-defense cannons installed on ships and stations, and made them more suitable at offense in a large space battle. All this equipment, however, made them much heavier than the TIEs, and had inferior maneuverability and acceleration as a result.
Overall, the TIE should be able to defeat an X-wing in a dogfight, as it doesn't matter if you can take a couple extra hits if your opponent can easily stay on your six. Play any combat simulator game, the craft that has superior mobility usually is the one that wins.
It should be noted, however, that the TIEs advantages are limited to dogfighting, and they should not be utilized in a large scale capital ship battle offensively.
I'm down to clown with everything you've said bar one: The idea the Tie cannons were superior to the X-Wings.
Agreed, their spacing was, absolutely, but implying they were MORE powerful? Every single piece of evidence we have is those things were basically monsters, the 30mm GAU-8s of lasers on fighter aircraft.
Tie's had piddly guns by comparison, with their only fighting chance being their excellent positioning.
Seriously. What were the single fire OR twin-link fire rates even FOR on an X-Wing?
Tie fighters also have very limited visibility, as it only has a single window port whereas the X wing, like real life fighter jets, has an almost 360 view canopy, so realistically, Xwings would be better just on that fact alone. Also it’s pretty cool how similar tie fighters are to Zero fighter planes from the imperial Japanese army during ww2, and I guess x wings would be corsairs or even p47 thunderbolts
@@e90baby TIEs also have small viewports on the top and rear, the four black "lines" on the top hatch and the hexagonal black shape on the rear between the engines was also a viewport.
In STAR WARS: TIE Fighter 1997, the player had access to cameras placed onn different spots of the ships, which covered all of the TIE's "blindspots" (if you're fan of real life comparisons, F-35s have systems similar to this).
However that is the only time we've seen cameras used on starfighters in this manner, and as far as I know TIE Fighter 1997 is not considered canon, even though elements of it were made canon, such as the TIE/D Defender, so take this feature of the TIEs as you will.
I myself don't support the TIE Fighter = A6M comparison, as the Zeros had a major weakness, that being their slow speed due to the engines limited performance as the engine also had to be light.
We've seen that TIEs are capable of easily outaccelerating and outrunning X-wings, as seen the battle of yavin.
Luke said to Wedge and Biggs: "Increase speed to full throttle!" The TIEs (both Vader's and the regular TIE/LNs) caught up incredibly quickly.
@@thelonious2213 Tie Fighter’s are only powerful in a group. In a dogfight, they are cannon fodder. I bet a real life jet fighter can take one out easily.
However the TIE was a much older design, a contemporary of the Z-95 Headhunter. The X-wing was a much more modern design with updated systems. Its true rival was the TIE Interceptor but they never got into full-scale production.
You're definitely right about how while the X-wing is superior, it's always the pilots that matter, and the Alliance to Restore the Republic had the advantage of how they fight for people of the galaxy while the Imperials fight for just the state of it.
The TIE was a much older design, dating back to the creation of the Empire. It was a contemporary of the Z-95 Headhunter, which it dominated. The X-Wing was a more modern design with updated systems. The true comparison should be to a TIE Interceptor, but they never got into mass production.
I'll say that the TIE Fighter is like Chinese or Russian fighter planes: Inferior in quality but much cheaper to produce in massive amounts, so they can be sent out to overwhelm the enemy by sheer numbers.
The X Wing Fighter is like the USA's Raptor series: Superior in battle capabilities but too expensive to be produced in huge numbers. They rely on their superior technology rather than numbers to beat their enemy.

You are wrong. In fact, the US has as many devices as Russia and China combined. The philosophy of prioritizing quantity over quality is untrue, the Su-57 can completely confront the F-22. The main reason why Chinese and Russian aircraft are cheaper than American ones is budget. Not everyone has $800 billion and endless tax resources. The Russians cannot produce the Su-57 because they are too expensive (although much cheaper than the F-22) and China cannot afford to spend $800 billion on defense every year.

@@CojaGamez play some flight sim games for a while, you'll learn that superior flight performance is way bigger an advantage than being able to take 2-3 more hits. Read my comment below, there I explain my reasoning in detail as to why I prefer a TIE Fighter in a dogfight.
